Hi @DuchessDiona. Welcome!
I am in desperate need of an adjustment - my hips and upper back are wonky. I have a 10k race tomorrow but if I can’t get the pinch between my shoulder blades to relax, I don’t think I’ll do it.
Last week was consumed by getting the house ready for photography/sale, this week by making a cake (make that two cakes and macarons and truffles) for my sister’s 50th birthday party yesterday. Cake porn in the spoiler.
A vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream and boysenberry jam, topped by a chocolate fudge cake, decorated with salted caramel macarons and silver chocolate coated Kahlua chocolate truffles, and fresh chrysanthemums.12 -

Nice walk @julieannegannon ! Good luck with your run tomorrow.
@RunsOnEspresso Vacations always throw my system off.
Thanks @Teresa502 . I had thought about running the Pigeon Forge Midnight 8K a couple of years ago. I have not really been looking at races this year. Since I'm a night person, thought it would be good for me. Good luck and I hope you enjoy it. That is a really, really fast "walk."
Welcome @DuchessDiona ! This thread goes fast. Feel free to jump in on any of the conversations.
@ContraryMaryMary I hope you were able to get an adjustment and you are able to race tomorrow. Love the cake porn. It's so pretty and sound delicious!
Nice running @MikeRunsDaily2021 ! Great pace too.1 -

4 Aug - 6.20 Run 1.0 Walk - Birthday run on the driveway - played singles tennis earlier
5 Aug - 2.50 Run 1.0 Walk - Long Interval Run on the driveway
6 Aug - 0.00 Run 1.0 Walk - Driveway walk this evening - doubles tennis this morning
14.50/100 miles running 6.0/31 miles walking
I played doubles tennis with the chatty group today. None of us played very well, but we still had fun.
I worked at daycare for 3 hours. I thought it was going to be 5 and I'd get to play with the babies, but the teacher I was going to sub for was able to come to work, so I just did the filing and left.
When I got home, I did my streak mile on the driveway. It was only 82°F and 45% humidity, but I felt hot and my legs were tight. I hope they feel better tomorrow or my 10 miles is going to be "H E double hockey sticks."2 -
@MikeRunsDaily2021 very impressive work!
But Molly Seidel is my new running hero! That was an incredible Olympic marathon! 💪🤯5 -
@DuchessDiona Welcome from Memphis! Just today my family and I were talking about how impressive the runners from Jamaica were in the Olympics.
So, have we had a monthly question this month? If not I have one! Who do you wish you could be at the Olympics? If you could just wake up one day with world-class skills in an Olympic sport, what would it be? Have you ever come close to being world caliber at anything?
I always wanted to be an Olympic eventer. I grew up taking riding lessons from Rachel Smith, the mother of Olympic jumping gold medalist Melanie Smith, and wanted to be like her. Even went to the Junior Olympics once as a teen. Gave it up because I saw a close friend who was better than I was and a few years older give it her all and still not get anywhere, and it seemed to me like a good way to get your heart broken. But it’s still fun to dream! Melanie Smith (now Smith-Taylor) has a road named after her, which my husband and I run down, and these days she lives quite near us on a huge property with lots of retired horses. I haven’t caught her on TV but supposedly she’s covering the Olympic equestrian sports for NBC currently.4 -
@ContraryMaryMary the cake looks amazing! Im sure it was enjoyed by everyone.
Re monthly question. I hated sports as a kid, detested running, jumping or anything like that. Except I liked discus. And now I would love to be Valerie Adams (won bronze this year in women's shot put). She's such an inspiration and an incredible athlete. Her reaction and joy at winning Bronze was so heartwarming. She was so elated and proud of her achievement. A lot of other teams could have learned from her (looking at one of the British and German rowing teams who were just pipped at the post and their disappointed was palpable, despite winning silver and bronze).2 -
But Molly Seidel is my new running hero! That was an incredible Olympic marathon! 💪🤯
Such an amazing performance! She looked strong even headed into the finish as people were dropping right and left. I know she is a pro and definitely didn’t just decide to run yesterday, but I still find it so impressive that someone could win 2nd at Olympic trials with their FIRST marathon then medal at the olympics. She’s definitely meant to be a marathoner!
Welcome @DuchessDiona!
Re: monthly question. I don’t know if there’s any specific sport that I would be able to choose. For me, I would like to see what it feels like to be that good at any sport. My entire life I’ve been fairly athletic but I’ve never been competitive at a high-level.5 -
Monthly question
When I was little I wanted to do the luge. Lol6 -
As a kid I was very active but I did not participate in organized sport, although I played tons of baseball with friends and family (lots of farm team level baseball in my extended fam). I loved baseball actually, and most everything about it, and even had a great stick and arm. I just never was able to be "coached" and hated gym, etc. So obviously that never developed. I was always a slow runner and that did not help anything at all in regards to sports or gym, etc. I always hated running. Even today my relationship with running is "complicated".4

Hazy sunshine, mid 60s F, with higher humidity and a light wind from the south. Actually felt pretty good.
@Teresa502 Yes; and the new shoes helped. I usually go to the New Balance Outlet store when they have BOGOs, so I usually have a pair waiting to run.
Welcome, @DuchessDiona !!
Back when I was stationed at Fort Benning, I did some handgun training with the US Army Marksmanship Unit, all of whom were international caliber shooters and many of whom were Olympic medal winners. I just lacked the confidence and commitment to try to take my skills to the next level.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

Good morning everyone. I woke up this morning with a headache and wondered if I could get myself out to do my planned training run. Well I gritted my teeth and went out for it. I took my running slow and easy. I felt like I was moving in slow motion but I did it and felt better for it. Plus my headache is long gone and I’m basking in my accomplishment.
8/01 6.23 miles run
8/02 rest
8/03 rest
8/04 6.24 miles walk
8/05 2.31 miles run
8/06 6.43 miles walk
8/07 2.39 miles run
Totals
12.67 miles walk
10.93 miles run with 39.07 miles left to go
Tomorrow is a planned easy walk followed by a day of rest. I must say that I am getting that runners high with these 30 minute runs. I am so glad I ran today.

13.1 miles this morning. Got 10 miles in before the big fireball in the sky came up. And I saw a shooting star 🌟 😁
But it was already 79F and 82% humidity. But I didn't have to do any walking, most likely due to no blazing sun. Didn't worry about pace at all, so it felt much more comfortable. It felt like I was running in place for most of it.9 -
@Scott6255 ugh, the glowing ball of doom is definitely more the issue than the temp. I was watching it rise as I was running today. It seemed to come up VERY fast.4

I didn't run yesterday because I just didn't feel like it. I only ran today because my friends were there. It was a slog, pretty humid and definitely getting hot today. But it was nice to have good company and go out for iced coffee after.

I forgot to enter my run info. I decided last month to do the Scooby Doo virtual 5k. Had to be done before end of August to log your time.
My marathon plan was 5 miles so I set up my garmin for 1 mile warm up, 5k, and 1 mile cool down. I finished my 5k in 37-ish minutes (12:06 average pace). It wasn't fast but I wasn't going for a speed record. Lol It was an easy 5k.

@polskagirl01 when you mentioned the nude beach, then had pics in the spoiler I was like 😳
@quilteryoyo there were other clothed people passing through the area, and at the beginning/end it was a bit of a mix in clothing choices or lack thereof, and everyone seemed pretty chill about it, no big deal. Apparently the thing that will make Polish people look at you like you're weird, was a few days earlier when I was in the water with my kids when it was cold and everyone else on the beach was wearing coats.
I'm home now, and went for a long hike/jog in the forest today for almost 25 km. I purposely took it slow, and am now going to taper a bit before Saturday's race. I keep doing the math, but yes, the cutoff *seems* very generous based on my previous mountain adventures. I'm back to wanting to do it, I think.
I'm supposed to be cleaning my house right now... already tackled the laundry and the outside - aka huge weed-bush-thing that I fully admit was out of control before I left 2 weeks ago. It was so tangled together that I had to pull up little pieces on the side, then roll it all over and pull more little pieces until the whole thing was free. I don't know what it was. Also the "wildflower" mix (that I got for free from Nestlé with a code from a bag of cereal) that I planted in another spot, seems to have included huge ugly weedy things that I initially let go because I didn't know what was what... now having pulled them, the flowers next to them are wanting to fall over 😕. So I have some doing-over to do outside. But first, get off phone and clean the inside.
Happy Running everyone!6 -
Thanks everyone for the kind welcome. Yes the thread goes very fast. .trying to keep up!
Re the monthly question - there were so many awesome athletes at the Olympics from all countries. Proud of my country because we were able to place 4th for track and field in medal count with a population of 2.2 million people. And each medal winner has a story that's inspirational!
Sifan Hassan stood out for me too with 3 medals across long distances- gold for both 5000m and 10 000m and Bronze at 1500m. So impressive!!!
And to close it out - Allyson Felix and Sydney McLaughlin.
That being said...I have never wanted to be an athlete...I fell into running by accident...lol...but I enjoy what I do without the type of training and commitment required to be a professional athlete. I will continue to cheer on the athletes at these games9 -
Aug Total: 6.1 miles
8/4: 3 miles
8/7: 3.1 miles
I have procrastinated my runs this week because I didn't want to run in the heat of the afternoons. So now I have to run both Saturday and Sunday to catch up for the week. This morning was 3 miles and tomorrow will be a make up long run for this week after cutting it short last week.
Today I checked out the trail that was so overgrown a couple of weeks ago. They mowed it! I enjoy running there during the summer because I have to slow down on the trail and it feels cooler over the grass than the concrete. I also saw Hank the lab and his owner that I see almost every time I'm out there. The guy mentioned he hadn't seen me in a couple of weeks and he wondered if I knew the trail had been mowed! It's kind of funny that when I go run the trail I get excited for a chance to see Hank the dog and when he goes to walk out there he thinks about seeing me. I have a trail friend!8 -
@RunsOnEspresso The luge would be fun! Nice 5K too!
Glad you had a good run @Tramboman .
@julieannegannon Great job getting out there when you didn't feel like it. Glad your headache went away.
Great run @Scott6255 ! That big fireball was hidden by clouds here, for most of the morning.
@katharmonic Glad you got out and ran with your friends today.
@polskagirl01 Glad the nude beach wasn't totally nude. Funny that the only thing that makes them stare is swimming in the cold water. Great hike/run and garden work too. Nice active day.
@martaindale Glad the trail is mowed and that you have a trail friend, both dog and human.
As for the monthly question, I would probably chose gymnastics. One thing I really wish I would have gotten to do as a kid was dance and/or gymnastics. They are so graceful and strong!

1 Aug - 0.00 Run 1.0 Walk - driveway laps, barely beat the heavy downpour
2 Aug - 3.30 Run 1.0 Walk - Tempo run - 2 hours mowing the lawn
3 Aug - 2.50 Run 1.0 Walk - Recovery Run on the driveway - Weed eat at mom's in the afternoon
4 Aug - 6.20 Run 1.0 Walk - Birthday run on the driveway - played singles tennis earlier
5 Aug - 2.50 Run 1.0 Walk - Long Interval Run on the driveway
6 Aug - 0.00 Run 1.0 Walk - Driveway walk this evening - doubles tennis this morning
7 Aug - 10.0 Run 1.0 Walk - Long Run with Speed Play
24.50/100 miles running 7.0/31 miles walking
Today's plan called for a 10 mile long run with speed play... 0.5 mile zone 1, 1.0 mile zone 2, 8 x (0.25 mile zone 3/0.75 mile zone 2), 0.5 mile zone 1. I had made the workout and sent it to my phone last night so I could let the beeps keep me on track and I wouldn't have to think about it too hard. I was a bit worried about the faster 0.25 mile, but it went by really fast. Also, I allowed myself to walk if it was uphill, as long as I stayed in Zone 3. My legs started getting a little tired around mile 8, but, all in all, it wasn't too bad.
The biggest issue was my Garmin. At around 4.2 miles, I stopped to talk to my mom for a few minutes before finishing the run. I guess I was stopped long enough that my watch went into power saving mode. No biggie, I thought. When I started to run again I hit resume and noticed that, while it started from where I had stopped time and mileage wise, my workout was gone. I looked at every screen and it wasn't there. I was hoping I would still get the reminders, but no. That made the rest of the run a bit harder because I had to go back and forth between screens to see how far I had gone and another for my HR. So frustrating. I guess I'll know better the next time.
My average pace was 13:17 min/mile. I was able to run the last fast quarter mile in 2:11 minutes for a 8:44 min/mile (6.7 mph) pace. Not bad for being near the end of the run. If I could keep up this average pace for 3.1 more miles, I will be able to meet my goal for the HM - under 3 hours. We shall see.5 -
8/1 17.17 miles
8/2 14.49 miles, 1190 Days on the run, 372 days HM+ streak
8/3 15.31 miles
8/4 15.31 miles, I am easily amused, weird when it happens
8/5 15.6 miles
8/6 15.44 miles
8/7 17.3 miles, 1195 Days on the run, 377 days HM+ streak
Run was slow today, just not able to push it at all. Yesterday, I was stung four times by ground nesting hornets/yellow jackets (All in my right arm and it is not pretty). I had a big day planned yesterday of yard work, trying to relax, not think about clients or jury duty. Benedryl and ice packs were my friends yesterday. Still in a bit of pain and it itches when the benedryl wears off. My run today was laced with pain, itching and the fact that ground nesting hornets are complete *@$$holes*.10 -
Wow @AlphaHowls getting stung multiple times in the same place sounds terrible! 😩 I hope you can find a way to make it tolerable until stings dissipate.3
-
Oh no @AlphaHowls . I just got stung by one a couple of weeks ago and it hurt like crazy. Way to get your run in under those circumstances. I hope the itch and pain go away soon.1
-
Just finished watching the men's Olympic marathon. First, kipchoge is just on a different level. Second, they ran a marathon in the same time I run a HM. I literally cannot comprehend being able to run that fast.9
