One last run in August! We got Ida yesterday but it went mostly south of us - there were tornadoes in Mississippi only a few miles away, but all we got was a little wind and rain. Today was cooler than it has been, topped out in the 80s with a heat index only 90 something. In the shade with a breeze it was almost tolerable running weather!

Since our long run Sunday was truncated due to weather, we set out to do a long run today, which at the moment means 10k and walk enough to bring it up to 10 miles. We have been stopping and walking in the middle due to the extreme heat but decided since it was only regular hot, we would try to run the 10k without a walk break. Well… we sort of suck, and took a little break during mile 5. Also, 94 heat index and full sun is still hot. But not too bad. If I had to run from zombies that could only run 10k I could do it if they were slow zombies.

We ran on the Germantown Greenway which has a new trailhead just over the line on the Memphis side. Hey, nice parking lot, five spaces, the automatic gate sticks out so you will take your side mirror off if you aren’t careful, no way to get out onto the road without turning right (and my home is left) and no bathroom! And you spent more than a year on this! Love you, Memphis, ya dorks! I have missed running there though. We haven’t been doing it because of construction, then Covid, then lack of time to drive over there, so it’s been more than a year. Today we romped all over. Took a walk in the trails paralleling the river, which has me hankering to run trails back there. They are mixed use but primarily used by mountain bikes, single foot packed earth with a lot of obstacles, fun to run but tricky.

Saw a whopping big water moccasin sunning itself right in the middle of the asphalt trail. He scooted over for us when we saw us coming, but yikes. Many many tiny blue tailed skinks on the bridges. Tons of big black swallowtail butterflies, and an authentic, old school June bug - the big green scarabs, not the invasive brown Japanese beetles which people today call June bugs.

@7lenny7 When I worked at the animal rehab we had a nighthawk who was a permanent resident because he had lost part of a wing. They have the most adorable gaping mouths, and are so well camouflaged when sitting in leaves. I had no idea they had white bars, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one flying because they are usually out at night!

Nice finish for the month @ContraryMaryMary !

@katharmonic So glad to hear that I'm not the only one. Hahaha I think you did great with all of that hiking too.

@kgirlhart Great running. I hope you figure out the hip issue and it gets better.

@rheddmobile Glad you were able to run on the Greenway. With some construction, you do wonder what people were thinking! Water moccasin's scare me. Glad that one moved over for you. Now that you mention June Bugs, I don't think I have seen any this year. They used to be everywhere. When I was little, we would catch them and tie a string around one leg and let them fly...I guess sort of like a kite or taking our "pet" for a walk/fly.
