Went out to the trail this morning for my run, saw my trail friend and his dog. Like @Scott6255 said, it feels like running in maple syrup but it is getting less hard every week. I may rethink my training plan. I did 8 miles yesterday and my race is still 2 months away. It was nice to have some lower mileage weeks early on, but now it feels like I should be nearing the end of a HM plan and I am no where close. I have been looking at my tried and true HH plan and working out how to dove-tail into that plan. Probably wonβt make the switch until after Labor Day since my current plan has short runs over the holiday and we will be in the hill country, where I am definitely not ready to run a 9 miler. And it is nice to have less running obligations during family holidays.6 -
Woke up feeling like crud. Tried to go for run but decided I needed coffee before and could do so because I have today off. So drank some coffee and headed out. I was scheduled for 7 but said I will see what I could do.
The problem with a cup of coffee before a run is I had to stop at home at mile 3 for a bathroom break. π€£
At 5.5 miles decided just to do scheduled 7. So 7 done today. I took short walk breaks (think .05-.10) when I felt like it.
133/second goal of 145 (I have 5 miles tomorrow so will fall short of second goal BUT this will be my highest mileage month ever. I think 110 was my previous record)9 -

It was 72F with 92% humidity this morning but felt more like 110% humidity. I think your maple syrup spill reached all the way to Virginia @Scott6255. The rain from Ida is supposed to hit us Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning so I will probably run again in the morning so that I can take Wednesday off.
@katharmonic β With all the hiking you have been doing, I would not worry about running miles. Itβs all about being healthy and fit and living and you have been living girlfriend! I got nervous just reading about the climb on the cliffs! What a long day you had but so rewarding!
@rheddmobile β What crazy weather!

@katharmonic - I think @Teresa502 nailed it. I don't think running and all that hiking would be advisable. The fact that you remain so mindful about your running and your other activities is the secret to maintain long term, not so much just always hitting huge running mileage numbers. But you know that already!4

No running today. Golf instead. But I found out it's the golf swing that is causing my hip pain.

8.5 mile run exploring my local disused opencast mine, with 956 feet of elevation. After uploading my run I realised that I was 0.4 miles short of reaching my goal of 100 miles - absolutely gutted. But as it's the 31st tomorrow, I will do a very short run (1 mile) just to make it up to 100 miles, as I cant leave it as it is.
99.6/100 miles
8,698/10,000 feet of elevation8 -
I don't know if it was the two back to back days of long runs (relative to my current mileage) or the mountain legs routine I started doing, but Wednesday morning my PF was sore enough that I took the rest of the week off. It timed out well because it was a busy end of the week and running would have been tough to fit in. Thursday I drove to South Dakota, Friday I went to a funeral in morning, socialized in the afternoon and drove across Minnesota to the eastern border in the evening. Saturday and Sunday were sailing days. I intended to run when I got back home last night but it never happened. No pain at all in the last couple of days so I'll be running tonight.
@katharmonic awesome photos, and a great hike!

Catching up on the thread since last week.
My car is still in the shop, but my friend was nice enough to loan me his spare car so I could do some errands and go to the mountain to do some trail running.
@Scott6255 you killed your goal, nice job
Dang you all warn me about those big spider pictures, on my big monitor it like jumped at me. LOL we have those yellow dudes here in Alabama too. They make amazing webs but seem to like to be in your doorways. My neighbor said just relocate it, excuse me thereβs a better chance Iβll relocate thank you. He moves mine when they get too close to the door. I try to tell the silly thing the back garage door is all yours web away, he likes other doors instead.
@quilteryoyo sorry to hear about your aunt. I was talking to my momβs sister (one of two siblings left) and she said itβs so hard to be the last remaining and to watch all your brothers and sisters pass away. When the span of kids is 21 years itβs understandable than many pass before you, but it doesnβt make it easier.
I think I mentioned by friend passed a few weeks back, I keep seeing stuff on Facebook βTM likes thisβ βTM recommends thatβ no she doesnβt, Iβm thinking of unfriending her to make it stop, but I also like going to her page and looking at the pictures.
@katharmonic again LOVE your hiking posts. I had to laugh Iβm sitting here thinking βhi my name is Courtney and I hike 11 hours on Saturday and 15 hours on Sundayβ. You guys are beasts, I was holding my breath reading about the climb to Saddleback. The picture climbing the rock good night!!!
@rheddmobile weβll get IDA tomorrow. I talked to Skip (sheβs in Mobile) when I asked about the weather she said Iβm wet and wind blown LOL well that sums it up. I hate it for the folks of NOLA and that whole area, but thankful my girl didnβt get a direct hit.

Really, really stormy here today. Was scheduled to do fartleks and was thinking about whether or not I should head out when a tree fell over in my garden. I think thatβs a no from Mother Nature.8

I played doubles tennis this morning then went into the daycare and worked until after 5:30. I came home and did my walk on the driveway. I hope to get up in time to run tomorrow before going into work at 11. Gonna be way off of my goal. Oh well. Life happens, including miscalculations of the plan. LOL
I've read and hugged and liked, but no time to comment. Will see if I can catch up tomorrow.8 -
Catching up on some of the posts and conversations I missed. Lots of great running going on!!
@rheddmobile - I am so sorry about the 16yo! It is so sad. There was a 4yo here who had covid and died within days of being diagnosed and no underlying conditions. It just breaks my heart!
@ContraryMaryMary - congratulations on selling your house! Love the red picture but where are the red running shoes?
@TheMrWobbly - so glad you are running and not having any issues afterwards! Great sign of improvement!
@martaindale and @rheddmobile - those spiders are huge! We have a giant Huntsman spider that is pretty cool and sometimes you will see a wolf spider or even a tarantula. I like to see them when they are outside but not in my house!π³
@quilteryoyo - I am so sorry about your Aunt! Sending you and your mom some {{hugs}}.
About your vest... I rinsed mine initially after I washed the bladder, with some baking soda and water to get the plastic taste out. Also I keep the bladder and tube in the freezer so nothing grows in it when it is not in use. I think someone here gave me that tip when I first got it, maybe @skippygirlsmom.
@polskagirl01 - I discovered because I am executor for a friend who passed away in July, that Facebook has a way to place the account 'in memory of' that way the pages stay there and friends and family can still look at posts or pictures but it can no longer be updated. I had to provide proof that she had passed away but got a very nice email from them. Maybe Strava could do something like that.
@katharmonic - I love reading about your hiking exploits! Such awesome experiences!
@7lenny7 - So much driving I would need to get a run in just to be able to sit in the car all that time! I hope your run was good!
@skippygirlsmom - see what I mentioned above about Facebook. Maybe some family member could send them the info that she passed away and the notifications would stop.6 -
It's cold and raining, strange for August but it's not stopping me from running. My kid had a practice at school, with no time frame other than "short", and didn't want to come home alone, so I said I'd just run around the neighborhood and circle back by the school every 5 minutes or so. You'd think by the reaction I got, that I'd suggested leaving her alone in a dark alley for hours, but in the end I saw other kids coming out of the school as I was coming down the road, and was at the door before she even came out. Got 5k while jogging around. Goals blasted for August! The giant pink ticker-fish is snacking on tourists on the beach β±
August Goal 100 miles (stretch goal 185k)
Yes, I'm aware I'm only 5.8k away from 200k... we'll see if any of the girls are going to the track today, and how much work and housework I can get done between now and then, and if husband gets back with the car in time, and how my legs feel. I'm gonna guess this is it for August though - it's been a great month!9 -

I wrapped up the month with a 6 mile run last night. It started out as a slog. My first run interval was only a quarter mile, but after that warm up I was able to knock out run intervals of 1.2 and then 1.6 miles. So, I am getting (slowly) closer to a full run. There was a very, very slight pain in my PF at mile 4 but it never got worse and it's fine now.
Who are our bird experts here? As I ran around a nearby pond I noticed several birds flying which, from a distance looked like really large doves (but too big to be doves). I little later another bunch flew right over me. Now they looked like small raptors. The distinguishing feature was a white stripe on the bottom of each wing starting at the front edge and going back, parallel with the body. I've been trying to find this pattern in a bird identification guide but no luck. Another characteristic was that while they were flying together, they were not in any sort of formation. More like strangers who happen to be going the same way rather than friends walking side by side, if that makes sense. (eta: I figured it out. These were nighthawks, which are actually neither hawks nor are they nocturnal. Apparently they were on their way to South America for the winter)
Recovery day today in preparation for a race tomorrow. It's the first in a series of 4 races at a nearby park. The first two are 4 miles and the last two are 5k. I paid just $80 for all 4 races and get a lightweight hoodie and snacks and beer with each race.

August was a good month for running for me. Going on vacation with a running friend helps with the mileage thatβs for sure! I surpassed my 100 mile goal ending the month with a total of 130 miles. This morning it was cooler at 63F but still 95% humidity. I ran from home so I got to see the eastern horizon come to life and watch the trees emerge from total blackness to blobs and then more defined branches, limbs and leaves. Weβve had some light rain showers this morning but nothing major yet.
@ContraryMaryMary β Loved the red picture! Thatβs a lot of red! Good call on not running in your current weather.
@skippygirlsmom β I missed that you recently lost a good friend. Iβm so sorry.
Haha @polskagirl01 β love the ticker placement!
@7lenny7 β Interesting about the nighthawks. On two separate days last week, I saw a bird and googled hawk images which it seemed to fit. Maybe it was a nighthawk migrating through here. On both occasions there was just the one though. Good luck and enjoy your race tomorrow!
Inspiring as always @AlphaHowls!

I had it in my head that IDA would be pouring on me this morning so I didnβt set an early alarm. I should have no rain and much cooler. Thatβs okay Iβm good with my mileage this month.
Thank you @Teresa502

I haven't been here but I have been running .... Happy end of August .. see ya in September8 -
@Scott6255 I often wonder where Garmin gets it's weather information from too. I know it can be several degrees off from the thermometer on my porch. Most of the time I just go with what Garmin says and use it to compare what it was during other runs...assuming that it is consistent in where it gets it's info from and that it is somewhat close by. But, who knows.
@martaindale Yeah, 8 miles 2 months out seems like a lot. Enjoy your family holiday!
@RunsOnEspresso Haha I always have coffee before my morning runs, but I wait until I have already gone to the bathroom before I head out for my run. I guess maybe that is why I find it difficult to get out early enough. Humm. Congrats on your highest mileage month!
@Tramboman I'm glad you figured out what is causing your hip pain, but not sure that is good news for you. I hope you can change the swing a bit to help. I don't golf, so I dont' know.

Won't be long before golf is over for the year. Until then, I'll have to live with it.3 -

I took my computer to daycare today, hoping to catch up on the threads while the kids slept. Of course, today was a day they decided to take forever to fall asleep and then, once they did, they didn't all stay that way very long. Hence, not getting finished earlier. One little boy woke up, sat on his mat, and said, "Ms. Vicky. Ms Vicky." so I had to go sit with him so he wouldn't wake up the other kids.
@7lenny7 I hope the non-running days helped. Sorry for your loss. Sounds like you had a very busy end of the week. Sounds like it did help. Glad you had a nice, pain free run and glad you figured out the bird too. "More like strangers who happen to be going the same way rather than friends walking side by side, if that makes sense." makes perfect sense to me. Good luck with your race tomorrow.
@skippygirlsmom What a nice friend you have to loan you their car. Great job on the trail run. Thanks for the condolences. I'm sure it is hard when you are the "last one" left in the family.
Wise decision to listen to Mother Nature and not run @ContraryMaryMary.
@shanaber Thanks for the tips about the hydration vest bladder. I am going to rinse it in some baking soda water before I use it again. And, I'll find a place to store it in the freezer.
@polskagirl01 Congrats on smashing your goal. Your comment about the giant pink ticker fish tickled me.
@AlphaHowls You continue to amaze me.
Great running @Teresa502 ! That's a lot of miles.
Congratulations to all who met their goal this month. Great running everyone - whether you met your goal or not.

Wow. Only 27.5 miles short of my goal. Part of that was mistakenly counting that I would run on Friday's, which I haven't been doing since I have the regular tennis matches on Friday and my long runs are on Saturday. Partly, it's because stuff happens. I'm still very happy with those numbers and that the streak continues.
It was already raining here this morning, so did my run on the treadmill this morning. I ran the "tempo" part at 5.5 mph. Never got into zone 3, but I'm still happy with the run.

It was bugging me that I was just shy of 200km for the month, so I headed out for an hour anyway. The wind had dropped a bit but it was pretty wild and I suffered from a tough headwind in the first half, benefited from the stiff tailwind on my way home. Felt so much better for it - the lockdown mehs have hit hard this week. Finished August with 203.51km.8

@katharmonic β With all the hiking you have been doing, I would not worry about running miles. Itβs all about being healthy and fit and living and you have been living girlfriend! I got nervous just reading about the climb on the cliffs! What a long day you had but so rewarding!
Thank you @teresa502 and @WhatMeRunning, I needed to hear that and appreciate it! And thanks to everyone for the nice comments about my hike.3 -
Great month @polskagirl01, @Teresa502, @skippygirlsmom, @Scott6255, @shanaber - well done on exceeding your goals. And as always @AlphaHowls. I probably missed people and I apologize but fabulous job to all who met and beat your goals. And to those who kept going and didn't quit, regardless of if you ended up short of your goal (like me!).

Hey @quilteryoyo I was just 22 miles shy of my goal so I hear ya. So close! Ha.
At least I finished up the month with a couple of runs to end the streak of zeroes. Nice therapeutic runs with a friend today and yesterday where we hashed out a lot of issues and worked through our stress. The running felt tough but it was easier with a good friend.
On to September! I'm a little more hopeful about mileage but there's still some hiking to be done.8
