Due to work and family commitments I can only run 2-3 times a week. I struggle with this as running is my 'me time' and what I used to switch off from everything.
Got a 7 hour timed trail race on Sunday. Hoping to run ultra marathon distance of 30+ miles. Weather is looking dry and around 13 degrees in termerature, so good conditions.
I hope you enjoy your ultra and get to your goal mileage. You are such a strong runner and have been working on elevation, I have no doubt that you will get there!

@skippygirlsmom I honestly think runners here would revolt if an organizer tried to do a cotton T-shirt. Maybe we're a bunch of snobs, haha. There's at least one sports clothing company I've noticed lately - if they can put their logo on the event shirt, the price is lower. They did our running club shirts (in my profile picture) and also that race I did last month with the cool shirt with Neptune on it.
@CarsonSurfs I love that you're running in the Forbidden Forest. I would be too nervous about being caught and generally breaking the rules

@mshawski it's been a while since we had the winter gear conversation. Layers are my best suggestion, and it also depends on the temperature and what gear you have. Is it possible for you to warm up inside, then put on your cold weather gear and go out? Some kind of jumping around, or one of our people used to jog the hall while he cooked his eggs. You can get yak-tracs or something similar for your shoes, or drill short screws into an older pair, for traction. For longer runs, repeat shorter loop or have places along the way where you can warm up if needed.6 -

Happy belated @katharmonic!
Ran 3 in very brisk 25 degree weather this morning. I may need to lean on this group's sage advice for winter running gear. I haven't gotten it right after all the years on and off running in the winter. Part of the problem is I walk a mile before running (my very achy body dictates I need a walk before running to avoid injury) so I'm either FREEZING during the walk, or comfy during the walk and a sweaty mess during the run. I can't figure out the layering between the two. What's you're favorite winter gear? (Happy to be redirected to a previous convo if it's already been had - and sorry for the repetition if it has )
ALSO - suggestions for shoes for running on unplowed trails? Is it ok with the right shoes or a straight up femur death sentence?

I also walk before running. My advice is some calisthenics indoors such as leg kicks to get a little warm, then dress to be uncomfortable but not freezing during your walk. But that’s really my tactic for warmer weather than what you’ve got! When it’s below freezing, dress not to suffer during your walk then remove layers. Make sure not to forget your face, especially if there’s a wind!
My favorite chilly weather gear is a decathlon jacket which unfortunately isn’t made anymore. It has zippers and vents all over and is comfortable in a wide range of temperatures.4 -
I am so far behind in the thread. Life has just gotten in the way this week. So, I'm not commenting on everyone's posts today. You all are doing some great running.
@rheddmobile Glad to see that you ran the trail you didn't think you ever would and managed to not fall and die. LOL

I have been walking most of the week due to time constraints more than anything else. I was able to play tennis this morning with my normal Friday group of ladies. My back hurt a little, in one small spot, when playing and is tighter/a little more painful that it has been tonight. I'm going to ice it in a few minutes and hope it feels better. I'm sure it will. I'm still hoping to work on the 10K plan starting next week.

I got out for a run finally today. It was tough. My shoulder was killing me and seemed to be related to my PM burning or buzzing in the front of my shoulder.So I walked and ran when I could. When I got home and finished, my shoulder no longer hurt and my PM felt fine again. SO.WEIRD!

I did get my booster Moderna on thursday afternoon. thank goodness unlike the 2nd Pfizer I did not have immediate reactions which frightened me. And altho I did not have a fever and got my runs in, my shoulder now has a nice orange size swelling on it and my underarm lymph node is not happy either. But I can deal with all that as my energy for running was fine, and I am going to do whatever I can to make sure I avoid getting sick as the long term effects even if you are not hospitalized or dead are just awful for runners and athletes.11 -
Ugh, I'm *that* person who joins the challenge and hasn't run yet at all this month. I've been dealing with some foot pain that is improving, so I plan to try it out tomorrow. New running shoes was going to be a present to myself when I reach my next weight loss goal, but I might just have to do it sooner.10

I've fallen behind on posting!
The weather is turning colder and I alternate between handling it well and not handling it well. After a rest on Wednesday, Thursday's run was poor. I was so drained from the totality of everything that I ended up taking a sick day from work. Friday's run, therefore, was a little better and I tried to run 4 miles at race pace. The pace felt fine, but the heart rate seemed a little too high to sustain that for a half marathon. Today's light jog after weightlifting was much better and reasonably quick too, though that wasn't the best choice.
Long run tomorrow; my route takes me very close to the New York Marathon route, so hopefully I'm not interrupted too much. The plan is to run easy for about 90 minutes, then see how long I can sustain race pace while fatigued without it becoming a tempo run.
My half marathon is 2 weeks from today.

Switched my long run to today so my bride and I can go to brunch tomorrow. We had to make a reservation. That is so foreign to us. When we lived in Carlsbad, we could go to just about anywhere in Encinitas, Leucadia or Carlsbad and get a table within 15 minutes or less. This reservation thing has really hampered our brunch game!
Today's run was on the ATT. Flat and straight. Mid to high 30s and a bit breezy. Perfect fall running weather. @johnisrunning, I'm curious what you are experiencing that difficult running in the cold. It's always been very pleasant for me and I don't seem to have any troubles or performance issues, unlike when it's hot. Anyway, I did 12.2 miles at 9:33 pace. I was going to monitor my HR during the run, but my Garmin stopped recording HR a few miles in, so I had to just go by PLE. Felt pretty easy and steady the whole way.
35.5 miles in the books for the week. Should easily hit my first 40 mile week since my return.

@ssseattle - I would recommend getting the new shoes sooner rather than later, especially if you think your old ones are contributing to your foot pain.5

@ssseattle If you need new shoes, getting them sooner rather than later is a good idea. You don't want to get injured and not be able to run for a while. You could still make it a weight loss challenge...just paying yourself ahead of time. Maybe you could divide up the cost of the shoes by the number of pounds to go and keep track of when they are paid off....mark it off on a chart or some visual to keep you motivated. Then have a "note burning" when it is paid off to celebrate.
@johnisrunning Sounds like you are doing great and listening to your body. You should do great on your HM. Which one are you running?

Good question. I believe it's largely psychosomatic, caused by the heart rate readings on my wristwatch. When my hands are cold, I suspect that my heart is pumping more blood to my hands faster to keep them warm, resulting in what appears to be a heart rate that is more elevated than it should be given the pace and conditions. Even going out knowing this, it still makes me think "wow, my fitness is gone!" Silly, I know. Some gloves prevent this better than others.
I've tried running with a chest strap but it started malfunctioning after only a couple of months. Very disappointing.

Very interesting. Funny how we become a slave to our devices and their data.
Have you considered doing a few runs in the cold and not looking at it and just running by PLE?2 -

Sure and that's usually what I do on long runs. Most of the time when I'm watching HR, it's to make sure I'm not working too hard on easy runs.

Interesting you mentioned the underarm lymph node. Mine aren't happy, either, although I had no swelling at the injection site.2 -
Today’s run called for stride repeats of 8x 20s at 150-200spm and 45s recovery. My cadence for all 8 repeats were between 175-180, so I was pleased. With warmup and cooldown, I completed 2.43 miles.

Thanks for the input. I like the idea of still marking when the shoes are "paid off" in poundage lost. I will hit a running store next week.4

10 miles this afternoon. Had some things to do this morning, so had to put the run off. It got a little warm (66F), but pretty nice. The run didn't feel bad considering it felt like both legs were broken a few days ago. Just tried to take it slow and keep it easy. Felt better as it went.

I had intended to run today, but wound up having some errands that needed running this morning and then I went down and trimmed mom's lawn with the push mower. I came home and did a driveway walk because I thought my neighbor's were going to come up to take a walk into the neighbor's field, but they never showed. I really can't blame them, because there were no definite plans. Still, I just goofed off for a couple of hours, in case they did come. Good news is, my back seems to be a lot better today.7

I got in a short run this morning. It was 28F, dark and chilly. I should have gotten out the door earlier but just couldn’t make myself. After my run, I got my things together, met a friend and we’re back at the beach for a few days. I’m so behind on the thread. I’ve been reading and liking though. I even started to go through my old shirts so that I could participate in the monthly question, but I got sidetracked and didn’t finish. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s race reports and @katharmonic’s hiking report and celebration!

I did a trail run with a group of friends this morning - thanks to our never-ending, although now slightly less onerous, lockdown, I haven't run with a group or out of my neighbourhood in months. So, hills and chatting for the first time in ages had me gasping. Fun though. Perfect late spring weather too - cool and clear, albeit it was an early start, I wouldn't want to run now, the sun's getting hot.10

Race Report: Today was the Half Marathon I have been training for. It was really nice weather. It was the coolest run I have had so far this season. But there was no wind and the sun was shining. I wore shorts and a t-shirt and started out with sleeves and gloves. Last year when I ran this race I missed a turn after mile 12 and ended up with 13.5 miles. My official time was 2:11(which was a PR)and my Garmin gave me 2:07:57 for a HM that day. So my goal for today was to beat 2:11 and hopefully to beat 2:07:57.
The race started and I went out a little too fast as I always do. I was running side by side with a woman for the first two miles but then she pulled ahead of me, but I was able to keep her in sight. The run was so pretty and even though I slowed a little I was still on pace and feeling good. I took my gloves off around mile 3 and pulled my sleeves down. I took the sleeves off and stuck them in my pocket about a mile later. This race is an open road race and there seemed to be more traffic than in past years, but things were going well. Around mile 8 I noticed that the woman ahead of me was walking and holding her hip. When I caught up to her I asked if she was OK and she said she was, but she was having some hip problems. So I went on. By this time I was getting tired. But I knew I was getting closer so I ran on. I did take some chews during the race. Last year I started having leg cramps after about mile 12. I think that was a lot of the reason I made the wrong turn. (Plus the guy ahead of me took the wrong turn so I followed him.) So I was hoping to avoid the cramps and make my turn. This time I did not miss the turn and soon I was in the final stretch. The last two miles were pretty tough. I was feeling slow and really had to push myself if I wanted to get my PR. There was definitely a part of me that wanted to slow down, but I knew I would be disappointed in myself if I did. I did slow down some, but not on purpose, and I didn't stop. My husband was waiting to cheer me into the finish which always helps. I ended up with a time of 2:07:11. So it was a PR and I got first in my AG. And I won a door prize which was a case of beer.
After the race I drove over to Ft. Worth for a baby shower. It was really nice. I finished the quilt and my niece seemed to really like it.
So it has been a really busy day and I haven't had a chance to read anything yet, but I wanted to post this. I'll go back and catch up, but right now I am looking forward to the extra hour of sleep we get tonight.
