@Tramboman great to hear your foot isn't causing you any problems anymore. Nice recovery!
@quilteryoyo glad you are able to continue your walking streak and even get in a little running!
@katharmonic sorry you are having trouble with your SI joint / lower back. Hope you can rest it and it gets better soon.
Only 4 miles this evening. Shins hurt terribly for the first 2 miles, then calmed down slightly after 3. By the end of 4 they were just reminding me they were there. I think I'm done for the year. So that is 1,375 miles for 2021. 119 miles past goal. Most miles in a year. But didn't end the year injury free. Will try again in 2022 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .
Hope everyone has a great and safe New Year's Eve.
See you next year ❣️6 -
@Teresa502 - love the pictures and it is going to be so awesome to hike the sections of the AT! Like others I am looking forward to reading your hiking reports!
I hope you enjoy the Christmas tree display!
@quilteryoyo - glad you could get in some tennis and hopefully your back will be ok tomorrow. Do you have any soft dirt areas you could run rather than on pavement? I have 4 ratings for options near me... cement sidewalks, street pavement, trail pavement (rubberized so softer than the street) and dirt. My body tends to like the dirt the best.
@skippygirlsmom - I would be super cautious running on those trails too! Glad to see you getting back out there though!
@Tramboman - I hope your foot continues to feel ok!
@Scott6255 - Sorry that you finished the year with sore shins. For me that is typically a result of very tight calves and in one instance stability shoes that my body just didn't like.
So I have become a cold wimp! It was 52F, cloudy and windy and should have been great running weather. I.Was.Freezing. I had on a long sleeve shirt and a Hot Chocolate running jacket (fleece inside) from a couple of years ago. It was supposed to be partly cloudy and I was sure I would warm up but I never did. Well I did a little, enough to pull the hood down but the sun never came out after an initial appearance at the beginning. It also wasn't supposed to rain and sure enough half way out it started spitting at me. I was happy to get in 5 miles but was cold and wet when we got home. We are under flood warnings now until Thursday night so probably no running for me until Friday. I won't make my goal for the month again and of course I am about 40 miles short of my reduced yearly goal of 1000 miles. This will be my 2nd lowest year since I started running and the 1st was when I had the stress fracture in my foot and couldn't run. This year was mostly just life getting in the way and my hamstring issues but I am finishing the year healthy and that was one of my goals.
I also looked up the running dates for my Hot Chocolate 15k - I have until April to run it! I thought it had to be done before the end of the year. I also signed up for another virtual 10k that doesn't start until January. I will post a swag picture once I run it because it is super cute.

OK - I was able to log in and join the challenge but sadly you can't go back past Oct to log miles and it looks like it's sort of a log one session at a time. If I could mass log my miles from the past qtr I would do it but logging for each day would take me weeks.... sigh. I will try to join up next year perhaps. I remember in Jan and Feb seeing a lot of updates.0

12/28-45 min of Epic workouts on youtube. It's so hard but I feel it working. It's definitely tightening up all the loose nuts and bolts in me.4

Cloudy, upper 30s F, and a light wind from the west. The snow that fell yesterday evening had mostly melted by this morning. Did see one live worm. Foot remains stable.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

@Scott6255 Thanks. Great job on getting your run in and beating your goal for the year. Hope a couple of days break will give your shins time to recover. Happy New Year's to you too.
@shanaber I really don't have much around my house except for road pavement and the neighbor's cow paths in his field. I would think that wouldn't be good, since it isn't at all level. I did run in the grass along the edge of my driveway, and it's okay. I'm thinking about seeing if I can "make" a place around my field, but I'd probably have to have someone use a grader blade and get up all of the existing sod. Not sure I'm ready to do that either. Great job in getting that run in in those conditions. I am finding that I get cold a lot easier too. I'll be freezing in the house and it's 72! Crazy.
@SummerSkier I was bummed that I couldn't enter anything earlier than the end of Oct too. Thanks for trying.
@Tramboman Glad that your foot remains stable.1 -
Dang the year is rapidly coming to a close. Is someone going to start a January thread soon?
I am at 139.58 out of 100 or less monthly goal. My pace is still doing well but my energy and motivation are flagging this past few days. Some of it is the wave of covid heading/already here to tx, some of it is the damp gloomy humid grey days we have been having I think. I do have some new shoes on the way due today so maybe that will motivate me for the new year.
Scott, so sorry about your shins... Mine only start to bother me when my shoes are wearing out (I always blame the shoes right?). Tramboman, it sounds like your injury is on the way to being in the past! Always like when they don't turn out to be chronic. Seems like you are working thru it exactly right! Quiltery, I am not sure but I know that I run on pavement vs concrete and it is easier on my knees. I also run on the right side of the road to keep the stress on my bad right knee less since the road crests. I can't run in the grass either as I would trip and fall flat on my face. Some of the "paths" around here are that crushed gravel but I find those REALLY hard to run in and they hurt my legs because they move under your feet when you hit. I have gone to the track but running in circles is definitely not my thing.

I was just thinking about our Run the World challenge and how we're off track. @quilteryoyo and @SummerSkier maybe you could make one activity titled something like "May-October total" with a recent date and your average speed, and just put it all in together. It will look like you did an ultra, but the title would clue everyone in on what's up.
I ran yesterday's route, in reverse. Temperature was right above 0 and by the end I could tell the snow was literally melting as I was running. I was kept company by the running shoe footprints of a couple people who apparently had been out earlier. And one non-runner said I am "healthy the way I am"... 🤔 But maybe I'm running *because* I'm healthy? Or maybe I'm healthy because I run? I didn't stop, so by the time I pondered these things and had a response, I was long past him.
Saw some guys ice fishing! I guess the ice was strong enough, but I'd probably be scared to walk out that far.5 -
@Scott6255 thank you and hope your shins feel better with a little rest. Great job exceeding your mileage goal. Happy new year to you and may 2022 be your injury free year!
@shanaber well the wind and rain certainly doesn't help - it can feel much more miserable than colder temps. I hear you on the lower miles this year. I also have my 2nd lowest total since I started running. But yes, finishing the year healthy is an important accomplishment!
@kgirlhart nice job exceeding your monthly goal.
@summerskier and @quilteryoyo too bad about not being easier to upload previous miles or go back past October. But we certainly don't blame you for not wanting to spend all your time entering at a time. We've gone 24,306 miles as of this morning and that's pretty impressive!

Took another easy-paced run this morning and the back is holding up well. I have strength training tomorrow so will take a rest day from running (and take it easy in strength too) and then hopefully finish up the year with a longer run on Friday. I'm already pleased that I exceeded 100 miles for the month for only the 4th time this year. If I get to 110 that will be my highest mileage month of the whole year.
Massage tonight5 -
Short 3.6 mile run, with youngest Son and his friend riding along on their new bikes. Boys enjoyed and hopefully I can get them to do this more often.
December total:
67 miles & 6,255 feet of elevation5 -
@SummerSkier and @quilteryoyo - I don't know what you use to track your runs but you might try connecting to ChallengeHound and see if it will pick up your past runs. I have Strava set up and it synchs automatically so I don't have to go and enter it manually.
@polskagirl01 - That is so weird about the one person's comments... so you can only run if you are not healthy and want to get healthier? I would be really curious what their point was. We have friends in ND who ice fish and drive their pickup trucks out onto the ice. It would worry me too but I guess when you deal with it over time you know what to look for.
@Tramboman - that one live worm must have really been hearty to survive! Glad your foot is feeling stable!
Seeing you all running in 30F and below really makes me feel like a wimp. I honestly think yesterday's run felt colder than the one I did in early December on our trip when it was low 40's high 30's. I think because it was cold but the sun was out, maybe?
No run for me today. I will get the January thread set up.4 -

Whenever I run after work, I always forget to log it. It was another hot one yesterday. I had 45 mins at HM pace on my schedule. Wasn't sure how that would go with the heat. I wore my hydration pack again. It is really nice to have my hands free! Pretty quickly into my run, I started getting this crampy pain deep in my medial low calf on my right side. I stopped and stretched and noticed I could actually see a knot in area that was hurting. I massaged it a bit and started back running and it felt better. Whew! Then a mile later, same thing popped up. I massaged it a bit more and it wasn't an issue again. I used a massager on my calves last night and will do a good stretch session tonight. Hopefully it doesn't return. I think it's just a symptom of me being a little lazy with stretching and rolling lately. Race day is 2.5 weeks away. Can't be getting hurt now!
Anyway, because of the early stops, by first couple of miles were way off. But, the last 3 were close enough. A few seconds slower than I would really want but not surprising in the heat. Keeping my pace up in the heat is soooo hard. I am crossing my fingers for good conditions come race day.5 -
I set up the account. I added monthly run mileage but I cannot get my account to connect to the MFP challenge... It's way too awkward... Strange. You would think it would be simpler. Still asking me for a CODE to join the MFP challenge. ...0

The January 2022 thread is open so go and set your goal for January and for the year if you are inclined to!
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10852006/january-2022-monthly-running-challenge/p1?new=13 -
@SummerSkier - I didn't remember a code but I went back to the January 2021 thread and looks for a post from @TheMrWobbly, who originally set it up. The code to join is MFPRunners2021
Also I looked at what you can connect with to automatically synch your runs and these are the devices/apps:
Garmin, Fitbit, Strava, all the UnderArmour MapMy (Run, Walk, Ride, Hike, etc) and one I don't recognize called Coros3 -
When I followed the link to the Run the World group it looked like the same as 2021, and showing 2021 data. Is it just the same group rolling over into next year?
ETA - I won't have much mileage in 2022 but any I do get I am happy to add.2 -
OK seriously.... when I put the code in it tells me this now
Unfortunately this challenge does not have enough participant credits. Please contact Andrew Walkington Organization, the challenge administrator, and request that they add participant credits so that you can join.

That's a good idea @polskagirl01 . I'll work on that.
Nice running @katharmonic . Enjoy your massage.
@sweetdaisy13 That's great that your son and friend rode along with you. I hope they will continue to go.
Nice run @martaindale . Glad your calf quit cramping up.
Thanks for setting up January @shanaber. I have Garmin, but don't know how to sync it with anything. Plus, I wonder if it would put in my tennis and other activities or just running. I think I'll try @polskagirl01 's suggestion first.
That's weird @SummerSkier .2
