Happy birthday @shanaber and @Scott6255 !!
I do think the forum has changed over the last couple of years, but not in a bad way. We lost some really good people, and I’ve been thinking about them a lot lately for some reason. I think everyone here has good advice based on personal experiences, and I definitely have learned a lot from everyone here, no matter their running level.
Today’s run was an hour and 20 min at 11:13-12:13min/mile. It was in the 40s when I started, but I quickly warmed and double backed to my house to shed layers. I ended up with 7.37 miles.

Happy birthday, Birthday Twins!!!!1

Echo Echo...Happy birthday @shanaber and @Scott6255 !!
Added another 6 miles today so I am at 24.5 out of 100 miles for the month. 69 left to go for Run the year.. I am at a streak of 72 consecutive miles under 10 min pace. If I finish up at that rate I will have exactly 50% of my miles that pace. LOL... My goal was 40% for the year so that is a significant improvement from last year where I rarely saw that sort of pace.
Still really haven't decided on goals for next year. I know I don't want to do SO many miles but decisions decisions...4 -
Happy Sunday and happy birthday @shanaber and @Scott6255!
Turns out my ouchie quad is an IT Band thing, so uh… probably not running much this week ahead of that 4 mile race I’m supposed to run Saturday 😬. (Also didn’t run yesterday as planned based on trainers advice.) My trainer is coming up with modifications for class at the gym so I don’t have to do nothing all week, and I’m going to look into some yoga stuff to get me through the week. Hopefully it stops being so angry with me in a few days. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻8 -
@mshawski hope your IT Band calms down in time for your race.
Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone.
Was going to do 5.9 miles, but then thought better of it as I was in my new Asic NovaBlast 2 shoes, plus I haven't run in over a week, so did 5.9K instead. Getting smart in my old age 😁
But these shoes were pretty dang amazing. First time I have worn something that wasn't a version of Brooks Ghost in about 5 years. They were very comfortable, light, and responsive. I didn't feel any pain in my legs. The run felt very easy, though my pace was the fastest it has been in a long time.

@SummerSkier MobyCarp passed away in July of 2019. We still tag him from time to time, so he'll probably show up in a search more recently.WhatMeRunning wrote: »Just so everyone knows, I wasn't intending to imply anything was wrong with the group of expertise or advice here. I guess seeing those old threads/posts just seemed very "familiar" and made me comment, apologies if I came across incorrectly. I think this is the best place to go for running advice on MFP, no doubt, I point new runners here all the time. For anything more you have to go specific directions towards other specific sources (certain trainers/methods).
I miss a lot of things sometimes.
No offense taken We miss those guys, too. There was the ultra-running lady from Canada who was really good too, got picked up by a sponsor and stopped posting here (she told us she was going to concentrate on her blog I think) but I lost track of her.
I get what you're saying. But I also see you as one of those people who's been running for a while and has a lot of good input to share. So I'm glad you're back, and please, stick around! 😁5 -

I hit the trails today at one of Virginia’s newest state parks. The park has been there for a while but has been maintained by the town until earlier this year when it became a state park. I noticed one of the trails has been cut back, new picnic tables installed and new signage. It will be interesting to see if the state continues to up the maintenance. I rarely run there in the late Spring and Summer because part of the trail that I typically run goes along the river and although it is pretty, the grass gets pretty high and I’m terrified I will step on a snake. I hope the state keeps it cut back. I saw a lot of squirrels, birds, ducks, geese and deer.Happy Birthday @shanaber and @Scott6255!
Awesome pictures @shanaber.
Good to see you back @noblsheep.
Glad you like the Asics @Scott6255. They look nice. When I first started running I ran in Asics before switching to the Brooks Ghosts.

Thanks everyone and Happy Happy Birthday to my birthday Twin @scott6255! Hope you had a wonderful day too!
I didn't get in a 6.6 mile run but I did get out for a birthday run even though it was so cold and I did not have any cold gear with me. I will get it in once I am home or as my daughter suggested I will run 66 miles for December... Actually should be quite a lot more though.
Still need to go back and catch up on everyone!6 -
Glad to see you back @noblsheep ! I knew you hadn't posted in a while, but didn't realize it has been that long since you ran. Glad you aren't sore.
@ContraryMaryMary Glad you got moved and got in a good run in your new neighborhood. Maybe you will inspire other to start running.
Happy Birthday @shanaber and @Scott6255 !
@katharmonic Sounds like a nice run and free hot chocolate - yumm.
Nice run @marisap2010 !
Very speedy @SummerSkier ! You are doing great.
@mshawski I hope rest is all your IT band needs to feel better and you are able to race on Saturday.
Nice shoes and even better that they helped you go fast @Scott6255 ! Hahaha about the distance.
@Teresa502 That looks like a great place for a run. I hope they keep it maintained better.
@shanaber At least you got out and did what you could.
I was able to walk today - no pain when I got out of bed, as I had feared. So, I did do a treadmill run this morning between church and lunch with mom. I walked a total of 1.0 mile for warm up and cool down. I started out the run doing 3 min each at 5.5/4.5/5.0 mph. My back was getting tight, so decided to pull back a bit. I walked 1 min at 3.8 mph and then finished my run doing run/walk for 4/1minutes at 4.5/3.8 mph. I could still feel my back being tight, but it didn't get worse and no real pain. I'll call that a win.
My chiropractor had told me to do my back strengthening exercises everyday. But, I was thinking last night that I since everyone says that your muscles repair when you take a break that maybe I should take at least one day a week off from them. Since my back was tight anyway, I didn't do them today, but did do some stretches. I see him again on Tuesday and will see what he thinks about that.
I didn't set a goal for this month. I will at least walk one fast mile everyday and run when I can. My main goal is to get my back better so I can pick up my running distance again in January.7 -
December Goal: 100 Miles
12/1: 5.11 miles
12/2: 5.11 miles
12/5: 10.03 miles
20.25/100 miles completed for December
I ran 10 miles this morning. The weather wasn't as nice as it has been. It was humid and cooler at the start than I expected, but warm at the end. But it wasn't too bad. I was planning on 15 K, but when I got home I felt pretty good so I went up the street and circled the block to make it an even 10 miles.
We got the Christmas decorations down and I was hoping to get that done today, but didn't get it finished. Half the lights on my prelit tree don't work. But yesterday my four sisters and I met at my mom's new house to help her decorate. We had a great time and it was nice to see her excited about the holidays. So I did get some decorating done.
Happy Birthday @shanaber! Those trees are awesome!
Happy Birthday @Scott6255!
Great job on your 5K @marisap2010!
Welcome back @Noblsheep!

@whatmerunning - I don't think there was any offense taken. I don't think many of us spend as much time looking at articles or analyzing running information like the original creator of the challenge did and like @RunsOnEspresso said so many of the sites are now behind paywalls so even if we could post a link most would not be able to get to it. I do tend to go back to some of the older links, videos and articles as I think there is real value there but I also try to see if there are updates or new information or analysis.

Very nice running weather here in NE Tennessee this morning. It was a balmy 53F. Rain is supposed to move in by lunchtime with colder temps behind it but this morning was almost Spring-like. I paused my watch at 3.5 miles so the 5.30 miles in my log is based off a friend’s watch. Doesn’t help with our Run the World challenge though. ☹ Speaking of which, we only need 3,281 kilometers (2,038.8 miles) to finish the year!
5 -
@kgirlhart Nice run. Glad you and your sisters got together to help your mom decorate. Sounds like you had a great time doing it.
@Teresa502 It really is a nice spring-like morning. I wish I had gotten up in time to go for a run, but, alas, that didn't happen. Glad you had a nice run. I hate it when I turn my watch off and forget to turn it back on. As for Run The World, I need to go back in and update my miles. It has been months since I posted them. Not sure why I quit. I think the last time was when we were in Hawaii. That isn't going to be 2,038 miles, but it may be a couple hundred.3 -

Soooooo...
A couple of nights ago, I dreamed about running in a nice, gentle rain. I remembered the dream because I very rarely dream about running. Lo and behold, this morning it's in the low 50s F, with a drizzle at the beginning that turned into a nice gentle rain by the end.
There was a problem, though -- I woke up with my right SI joint hurting. I've had this before and was pretty sure that if I could just make myself get out there, it would eventually loosen up and I'd be OK. And that's what happened.
But why was my SI joint hurting? Well, last night I dreamed that Godzilla was chasing me through an amusement park. No doubt I injured my SI joint escaping from him.
So if you see news reports that Godzilla is wreaking havoc on northeast Ohio, know that I am dodging him to the best of my ability.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)

130 miles for December is the goal!
12/1 - 5.3 treadmill (speed pickups during commercials)
12/2 - 1 treadmill #streakkeeper
12/3 - 3.1 treadmill
12/4 - 10.3 trail miles
12/5 - 5.9 trail miles
@SummerSkier - I saw you mention URI, as in University of Rhode Island? That's where I went!4 -
@run_sara_run sadly no. I was referring to Winter Storm Uri which closed Tx for a week with no power and no water in single digit temps and no way to dig out of the ice/snow/ice sandwich which was treacherous and deadly. We lost a LOT of trees and bushes also as they were coated with ice as well.
Today I snuck in a 4 miler before the rain started. It was humid and drizzly and warm. Not a minute too soon as we had a cold front come thru which dropped the temps and had that COLD NASTY BITING RAIN with it.
Total for the month 28.57 out of 100. 65.7 miles left for run the year finish. Still managing to keep my pace under 10. 76 mile streak!
Last night must have been dream night @Tramboman ! I had a dream I was stuck in the grocery store checkout from hell and halfway thru realized no one was wearing masks either. Glad your SI was ok. Mostly my nighttime injuries stem from 20 plus pound CAT walking over my legs/feet. Or me tripping over something in the middle of the night.7 -
Walked my kiddo to school then ran a 5+km loop back home. It was snowing and for most of the run, it felt like I was in a snow globe. I enjoyed it.7

This is what it is like in my new area as well. It’s me, my neighbor, and 1 other woman that hold all the records and local legends. My husband who has barely run out there at all even has a local legend. It is very different from my neighborhood here where there are so many runners around.
Happy birthday @shanaber and @Scott6255 !
Welcome back @noblsheep !
@Tramboman When I dream about running, it is always this effortless floating run that feels amazing! Usually I am running at night and there are stars out and very tall trees around.

December Totals: 13.7/100 miles
12/3: 3.1 miles
12/4: 6 miles
12/6: 4.6 miles
I met my parents for camping this weekend at a state park a couple hours from where I live. I ended up having to run 3 loops of one trail because the longer trail I had scoped out was closed with a bridge washout and some of the shorter ones didn’t connect into each other well. As a last resort, I will run some road to connect trails but generally prefer not to do that as the roads in state parks are usually quite narrow and so many of the cars are large vehicles pulling campers. The trail was a nice one with good rolling hills and some pretty lake views.
I also did some hikes with my dad. He has gotten interested in hiking as they have started camping more and it was nice to share that time with him. We got a little over 2.5 miles each day and explored some portions of a different trail that ran around the fence line of the park.
That last picture needs a little explanation. My daughter tried camping in the hammock this weekend, was she found to be very comfortable for sleeping. However, the first night we saw several raccoons and that kind of freaked her out a little bit, with her thinking that they might try to climb in the hammock. So, she took a rake and created a leaf moat around the hammock as an alert system in case a raccoon trying to come share her bed!
Today, I waited until a cold front blew through to head out. It was like a summer morning (mid 70’s and 93% humidity) this morning but once the front blew in, it rained a little and the temps dropped 15 degrees along with the humidity. By the time I got out it was in the mid 60’s and still dropping a bit and there was a nice breeze. I’m so glad I was working from home today so I could adjust my run.7 -
@martaindale how did the leaf moat work out for her? Did she hear any raccoons trying to breach the perimeter?
Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative

Temps really dropped here today too. It was rainy and super windy, still really high winds tonight. I bailed on running outside and went for the treadmill before strength training. But I got to the gym a little earlier than I normally do on Mondays so got a full 5k in. They were having a member appreciation day at the gym and I stuffed several goodies like granola bars and fruit into my bag. I also tasted a red wine, which I thought was a bit odd for a vender at the gym, but it's not like I don't go home from the gym and have a glass many nights (having one now in fact). I did not care for the wine I sampled though.

Yeehaw. Felt a bit more like my body knew what it was doing on this run. It was weirdly not cold for this time of year, I forgot my gloves and turned out I didn't really need them.
The plan is to run three times a week / every other day, building to 5km by the end of the month, and then jumping into some sort of extended HM plan in January. And I need to remember to stretch8 -
Hahahaha @Tramboman . I'm glad you were able to escape Godzilla and had a nice run later.
Nice running @SummerSkier ! Glad you beat the cold front.
One of my favorite runs ever was in the snow, many years ago @polskagirl01 . Glad you had an enjoyable run.
@martaindale Sounds like you had a great weekend and I love the leaf moat idea. Looks like a very pretty place to run/hike.
Glad you had a good run @noblsheep . Sounds like you have a good plan in place to get back into it smartly.
I worked at daycare yesterday. I didn't start until 10, so mostly lunch, nap, and an hour after nap. I told mom that it was an easy day, until they woke up. I managed to hurt my back trying to keep a couple of the 2 year old boys from running inside the classroom. But, I'm glad to report that it is feeling pretty good this morning, so I guess the exercises are helping. I have my last chiropractor appointment this afternoon - after another day at daycare. We'll see what he as to say about everything.5 -
Great comeback plan @noblsheep it's seeing you back!
I like this concept of a leaf moat. I may see if I can convince the wife, neighbors and city that I have such a leaf moat around the house as an alarm system. I'll report back if it is a success.4 -

Partly cloudy, low 20s F, with a little breeze, so 30 degrees F colder than yesterday. I started a little ice beard, but couldn't maintain it. I had also forgotten how much energy the cold saps from you while running. Even found a Titleist golf ball.

It is too bad that we can’t count really intense running dreams as exercise! 🤣 Dreams can sometimes leave you feel exhausted when you wake.
@martaindale I’m curious to know how the leaf moat worked as well! Also, very pretty pictures.
I’m not scheduled to run again until tomorrow, but depending on the weather tonight, I might get out briefly. Otherwise, I will do some strength training.4
