First day of the semester was a little crazy, predictably, and I didn't make it to the gym with enough time to get much treadmill warmup in before strength class. Tomorrow doesn't look promising either. It is what it is right now between the frigid cold and work demands.5 -
5k running plus the same walking on trails today. Perfect weather. Did not expect the trails to be muddy since it’s been dry for several days, but they were really sloppy! Like put the drop cloth over the seats to drive home muddy! I haven’t run in mud since about this time last year, all sorts of little stabilization muscles in my legs are sore.5

After work yesterday I went to our little local park and ran the trail there. It is only a one-mile loop but you get some nice hill work. I had the trail all to myself except another lady started her walk when I was mid-way through my run. It was very close to dark when I finished up and the lady was still out on the trail. There was another car in the parking lot with a couple of people just sitting in it so I did a short cool down walk (0.55) so that I could make sure she got off the trail and to her car ok. I'm sure the people in the car were harmless, but I hated to leave her out there by herself in the dark.

Roads were still wretched after yesterday's snow, so I opted for the treadmill instead.5 -

@rheddmobile Glad you got in another run and walk. It is interesting how things seem to stay muddy in the winter. I think it is from the freezing and thawing.
@Teresa502 Very nice of you to wait and make sure the lady was okay. Sometimes you need to follow your gut in those situations, even if the other people are harmless. I once called the police when I lived in OH, because I was at a little neighborhood store right before it closed. There was a shady looking guy just hanging around in the store, not really looking at anything and not buying anything. It just didn't feel right. I never heard if the guy was ligit or not, but at least I did my part, in case he had planned on robbing the place.

Plan said 30 minutes tempo or track, so I did fast intervals on the treadmill. Had to go find my fan. Afterwards I went out and "chilled" in the hammock in the backyard, just for a few minutes.4

@Teresa502 that was a thoughtful act to make sure the woman was ok. Even with good intentions, many of us are so wrapped up in our lives we don’t even notice others. @Scott6255 is right, the world would be a safer place with more people like you.
I got my PCR test back and am negative, so it seems this is just a nasty cold. Treadmill again this morning to keep the streak going. It was slow not easy, and my eyes and nose were streaming so I had to keep blowing my nose. Sneasy and sneezy…

Hi everyone. Happy New Year! I'm well late to the party, I know. Still here though, still running - well, sort of. My ankle has been playing up - I did a massive 2.5hr trail run with a niggly foot (it's been playing up for a few months now) and it really, really didn't like all the downhill running. Had an adjustment at the osteo on Thursday which freed it up nicely, ran well on Friday, but then headed out on Saturday and every step hurt - had to cut things short and head home. Went for a massage and the therapist described my ankle as being like cement, so pretty much everything had seized up in there. One very painful hour later, it was feeling much better. That was Monday and I haven't had a chance to test it because, unlike most of you and your freezing temps, we are in the middle of the hottest, driest summer in years. Yesterday was drizzly, but other than that, it hasn't been anything but clear blue skies since early December. Stinking hot too. So, if you don't get your run in first thing, you risk melting.
I've had a quick read through of 24 pages of comments, saw a couple of fantastic results from events, sending warm hugs for the freezing temps and seasonal sniffles (and that other dreaded one), and healing thoughts to my fellow runners who are working through injuries.
Now to sort myself out, fix this damned ankle for good, lose the three kilos that have crept on over the holidays, and get my mileage back up - no idea how many k's I've run this month but I fear it is well below 200 - yup, just checked, I'm at 97km with only five days left in the month. I'm supposed to be running a half on the 13th (in my new neighbourhood, so very hilly) but I fear lack of training and being kind to my ankle will mean a slow time. Oh well, never mind. It's too bloody hot to run fast at the moment anyway!7 -

I’ve been in a leadership training this week and have gotten home late, so I’ve had two short runs this week. I’m thinking of signing up for a 15K in mid-February…

@ContraryMaryMary Glad you are back. So sorry about your ankle though...and the heat. I hope you can figure out how to get the ankle to behave and just enjoy the half on the 13th and not worry too much about the pace. I'm sure everyone will be slow if it's that hot.

I got out and ran driveway laps this morning. It was 43°F when I went out at 11:00. Mother Nature couldn't decided whether she wanted to be sunny or cloudy as she went from cloudy, to sunny, to cloudy again, all in the 45 minutes I was out. LOL I walked a mile total for warm up and cool down and ran, with some walk breaks, 2.25 miles in 30:29 minutes. The average pace for the run was 13:33 min/mile, which isn't too bad for the driveway. I did speed up for the last quarter mile, running it at an 11:21 min/mile pace. Even though I was a little chilly to begin with, I'm glad I ran outside today.
I took mom to the doctor again today to discuss her BP. We can't seem to get it regulated. It's either too low and she is dizzy, or it's too high. We're working on it. Anyway, since I was near the hospital, I went ahead and picked up a copy of my back x-ray to take to the ortho next week. If you are interested, the pictures are in the spoiler.

I ran a little over 5.5 miles today. It was chilly, but not too bad and it was a pretty morning. I saw a couple of loose dogs. I have seen them out a lot lately and always altered my route, but today I didn't notice them in time to turn, but they didn't even seem to notice me.

@quilteryoyo it hurts just looking at that x-ray. I hope there are some good solutions that will help.
Both kids' classes are now back on quarantine, (then older kid is on online learning until the end of February 😥) so I had a late start this morning, but did get out and completed about 8.5 km. The air was stinky, so it wasn't the greatest, but I'm glad to be able to run.
Saw a flock of pheasants and one was limping around. I couldn't get near him to try to help, but it looked like just a sore foot (nothing stuck to him or anything) and I'm guessing he can still fly, so he should be fine.

@quilteryoyo I'm sure we have a few radiologists here that will give you their professional opinion, but that x-ray looks painful to me. You are truly a bada$$ to be running when you are dealing with that!3 -
@kgirlhart Nice run. I'm glad the dogs ignored you. Hopefully they are friendly if they ever do notice you. In my rural area there are no laws about having your dog on leash, but I always assume if they aren't that they are friendly. That's probably a bad assumption, but so far has been true. The only one that isn't friendly that isn't on leash is a sheep dog that is behind a fence, so hopefully it can't get out...even though it did worry me when it was a puppy. Now that it's grown, it has less chance of finding a way through.

Thanks @Scott6255 . I know the radiologists here love to see x-rays. I guess that's why they do what they do. LOL Right now it's not really painful, I just know it is there. Even though I'm not sure the chiropractor did any good, I think the exercises he had me doing is helping. I haven't had an episode of my back catching and not being able to move without pain for over a month now. I count that as a win. Can hardly wait to see what the new ortho says next week.

It wasn’t as chilly as forecasted this morning so I was overdressed since I lay my clothes out the night before and really don’t take the time to re-check and re-think clothing choices the next morning. It ended up being 25F and the wind which had blown all night had calmed down.

@shanaber That podcast sounds interesting. I can definitely relate. I always said I could never be a runner, don't have the endurance, not built for it, etc. Groups like this one helped me so much because it isn't just super fast folks or people who run all the miles. I love that this group embraces all speeds, distances, and skill levels. Now I love running and would definitely call myself a runner and I may never be fast, but I'm faster than I used to be!

I didn't realize how many runs behind I was on logging. I took a few days after the race to recover, took some walks and have started up with some short runs this week. My legs are basically back to feeling normal though I haven't tried any speed work yet. I have a HM pace run tomorrow with my new HM target pace so we will see how that goes. I was supposed to do intervals yesterday but life got in the way and I skipped it; rare for me. I could run again this afternoon or I could go climbing. I guess I'll see how work goes today and decide what I feel like doing. It feels a shame to not take advantage of the nice weather but I don't know if I have ever run twice in one day and if I run this afternoon I definitely won't do speed work since I am doing that tomorrow morning.
I ran out at the hill country house a couple of days ago so got some hills in, and I was a bit tight after that, but nothing a good stretch and roll session couldn't handle. I made my goal for the month this morning. It was a bit of a guess, and I guessed a little low, so my adjusted guess is probably closer to 100 miles.4 -
@Teresa502 - that race sounds like so much fun, especially running it with friends so you don't have to run every 5k!
@quilteryoyo - I bet @Avidkeo would love to take a look at those x-rays! I am pretty lost when I look at x-rays but even I can see it! Wow, surprised you haven't had problems before.
@ContraryMaryMary - welcome back! How is the new house, are you all settled in? Hope your ankle is better for your HM! Do you do any ankle circles or flexes? I started doing them at the recommendation of my PT when I had the hamstring issue so now I do them every night at least.
I ran on Sunday and it felt pretty terrific at the time. Unfortunately Hobbes the Vizlsa got into something on the trail that made him very sick so that evening we had a trip to the ER Vet. They are pretty sure he got into some pot, I am thinking it must have been an edible dropped along the trail. It won't kill them but made him pretty sick and out of it. I was worried about taking him out again but we did head out yesterday with me yelling 'leave it' anytime he so much as looked like he was going to sniff something. Again it felt pretty great. I had planned to go out again this morning and wanted to get my Snails Pace 10k done but I didn't sleep well last night, don't feel like I slept much at all and there are life issues that require addressing. I should still be able to make goal if I run tomorrow and Friday and Sunday/Monday.

Good to see you @ContraryMaryMary, I’ve come back after a long hiatus and remember you well. Sorry to hear about the ankle. I’m sure it’s no fun running in, but I’m a bit jealous of your heat right now.
This cold is still lingering, and I’m wrecked from teaching through it with hardly any staff around because of covid.
Another trudgy treadmill run this morning to keep streak going. Would normally have an outdoor longer run on Thursdays, but tomorrow I will keep it brief again. Hopefully be up for it by the weekend.

Thanks everyone for the good wishes, it’s nice to be back.
I headed out this morning to test my ankle after having had an excruciating massage on it on Monday - it’s Thursday here - and am delighted to report it was completely pain free. Kept it shortish and flattish and slowish (a shoflish run?) but can’t really be confident until I’ve done a few more without issue.
@shanaber, I do a lot of mobility work and stretching (yoga is my other ‘thing’) however I think my muscles had gotten to the point they didn’t know how to relax. The sadistic Chanelle and her evil fingers of pain sorted that though. God it hurt, but the knotted muscles were the ones deep behind the ankle bone and under the Achilles’ tendon.
The new house is fab. We’re absolutely loving it and have been doing a lot of entertaining. The children are pretty much living in the pool. Looking forward to school starting back in Feb so I can get a more regular routine going and perhaps meet a few local runners…

I hit my goal for January today. I ran 6.25 miles this morning. It was cold at 29°F, feels like 20°, but it was a good run. I am ready for some warmer weather though.
I'm glad I made my goal early. I found out this afternoon that I was exposed to covid yesterday. The person I was exposed to didn't have any obvious symptoms and I am vaccinated so I am hoping to avoid it. I'm planning to monitor symptoms, social distance and take a test on Sunday. It's extra frustrating though. My uncle passed away on Monday (he had cancer, not covid related) and the funeral is Tuesday, so now I am not sure if I will be able to go. And now I am hyper aware of any possible symptom. (I am not having any symptoms). I just hate being paranoid about it. I still plan to run in the morning if it isn't sleeting.

@kgirlhart -Oh no on the exposure. Here they are saying you can go out after 5 days if you have no symptoms but still with a K95 or N95 mask. I would think by Tuesday if you stay symptom free you could go to the services for your uncle - so sorry for you and your family's loss.
