@eleanorhawkins ...and it really ticks me off because I run a circular route so I should only have it in my face a quarter of the time. But that's why I let my hair and beard grow out in the winter.
Speaking of beards, one of the ladies walking her dog this morning asked if she could borrow mine.
@skippygirlsmom Thank you. That is so sweet, but I was able to figure it out and get @shanaber the $4 this morning. I know the house must seem really empty when Skip leaves. Getting free shoes? Maybe I should go to work at a Fleet Foot. LOL
@Teresa502 I don't blame you for saying "no" to an outdoor run! The snow is beautiful though and I love the neighbor with the horse and wagon. We got the cold, but less than half an inch of snow. I was glad to stay in today too.
I walked 2 miles on the treadmill this afternoon while watching an episode of "Castle." I find it easier to walk on the treadmill without getting bored than running. Wonder why that is? Humm.

Having so much fun reading everyone's updates today!
Having a slow start mileage wise to the year but keeping the pace up. Today was a 4 miler which puts me at 25.3 for the month out of whatever i said... I can't remember.
It has been a strange week with such a HUGE uptick of Covid and staying home all the time again. And so many many cases around. I honestly don't mind being a hermit for this month if I can avoid getting sick and if I did not have running I think I would go crazy.5 -

3 miles at HM pace with warm up and cool down. Another chilly, clear morning. I feel like I have gotten my HM pace worked into muscle memory and I can hit it pretty easily. Last long run tomorrow before race day!8 -
Wow look at all the beautiful snow some of you have! I’m jealous of the views, but I know the reality is it’s hard - London comes to a near standstill if we have so much as a sprinkling of snow. Trains cancelled, cars crashing. So I think I can put up with today’s dreary, windy rain.
I finally got out for my run and my pace was faster than on the treadmill. I did need a couple of walking breaks on the steeper hills but I only counted my running mileage.
Have a lovely weekend everyone x

Blue skies, upper teens F, and just a light breeze from the south. Heard blue jays, a red tailed hawk, and one lonely robin; but saw a dozen or so squirrels foraging for hickory nuts. Another nice ice beard, too.
@martaindale Hope you have a great race with cooperating weather conditions.5 -
@Juliexx00 Glad you got outside for a run. But, that's a lot of snow. How do you run in it when it isn't packed down?
@martaindale You are doing great. When and where is your race?
Glad you were able to get off of the treadmill @Faebert . I often take breaks on the hills, but I count them toward my mileage "ran."
@Tramboman Nice run. We need an ice beard picture.3 -

My car told me it was 0 degrees F when I arrived at the park for long run this morning. This was colder than I expected and it was very hard to get out of the car. It snowed several inches of light fluff overnight so we stuck to the roads rather than the trails. Not everything was plowed yet so we ended up shuffling/trudging through the snow at a pretty slow pace. I was cranky and cold from the beginning and it was a major effort not to quit when we swung by the parking lot at about 3.5 miles in. I stuck it out for another loop but then when my friends were heading up the hills again (not many plowed choices) I bailed out in favor of getting home to a hot shower and dry clothes. One of my friends always declares on these type of days that we run "more miles than degrees" and I argue that this would be a more impressive accomplishment in the summer

@quilteryoyo slowly 🤣. I wear yaktrax, strides are shorter and knees are higher, core is definitely more engaged.5

WOW! we have some tough runners here!! I don't think I really want to run much under freezing anymore depending on wind and humidity of course. Someone somewhere mentioned that when it gets down in the 0's and teens F deg that it can't snow because it's too cold but I think that might be false based on my experience in URI last feb in Texas. Below is exactly correct. It holds true in Tx for when we are in drought or the temps are over 100 also.
Ran a little over 4 today. Wont log to run the world yet because I am enjoying SPAIN and don't want to leave it too soon. Ok reality is that I am at 29 point something today so I am probably going to go out and do another mile because I ..... cant..... help..... myself.

Last night, my training run was a 30 minute easy pace, and I ran 2.8 miles. I got out later than planned, and it was getting dark, but temps were decent, and I felt really good during the run. I probably would have kept going if it wasn't dark.
This morning after my RIPPED class, my training run was stride repeats of 10x 20 seconds at 150-200spm, followed by 45 seconds recovery. With warmup and cool down, I ran 2.18 miles.
January miles: 22.98

Spain, especially down here in the south, is awesome for winter running. This morning I set out with a thin long-sleeved top and had to take it off about 15 minutes into my plod. Passed a couple on the trail in shorts and the woman was down to her bra... admittedly they were running hard uphill.
As next weekend's race is up high we have to carry a jacket with a hood, and I'm thinking about taking an old pair of gloves for the start.
So yeah, when I see all your snow my brain struggles to get round it lol.5 -
1/8: 3.5 miles. Month-to-date: 13.5 mi Working on getting lighter running shoes. Mine feel too stiff and heavy.4

@katharmonic Congratulations on your run. I would have baled and not went at all.
hahaha @Juliexx00 !
@SummerSkier Great running. Love the video!
You're doing great @marisap2010 !
@globalhiker Do you have a running store near you where you can go get fitted. Most will do a foot measurement and recommend the correct shoe for you.3 -
Once again I posted about an adventure and then didn't even check in for a couple days. Sorry, conference. Thanks for all the kind words!
Now I quote and respond to a bunch of you at once. It got long so - spoiler.@polskagirl01 - Also it is great that you were so well prepared. I bet that souvenir guy has seen lots of unprepared 'tourists' who think they can make it and then have to be rescued...katharmonic wrote: »@polskagirl01 Enjoy the rest of your conference - all the others there are going to know how bada$$ you are.quilteryoyo wrote: »@eleanorhawkins You've got this! Can you go to the race website and find pictures of previous races or find the route and use google maps for a satellite view? Would that make you feel better about it?
@polskagirl01 You did great. I can't imagine doing that run on my own, in the dark, in unfamiliar territory. I guess I really am a wimp. Beautiful pictures!
ETA: I don't think it will work because of privacy settings, unless you actually install the app and follow me.
@quilteryoyo you are not a wimp at all! It's all relative. People probably think you're crazy for exercising after heart surgery (not your doctors though - they're probably proud of you). I think most of us here have gotten wherever we are incrementally, one step at a time. Or maybe my risk meter is defective? The darkness coming down made me question myself, as one of my precautions is "main, popular trails", so there are always people around, and other than a couple vehicles from the lodge, there was no one around after dark. Although not far from the lodge I did pass 2 people walking downhill together, without lights. I don't know if they were going all the way down, but I don't think they'd've been much help to me, and I was no help to them as I was running.
Feel free to speak up if you see me or anyone else here doing something we shouldn't!
Nice shoes @marisap2010 and raccoon adventures @rheddmobile !skippygirlsmom wrote: »@polskagirl01 great write up and pictures. Sorry you didn’t get to see the lake, the spring picture shows how beautiful it is. Dang kinda wish someone would have said to you “hey if you are going just to see the lake and the view you can’t”.
@Tramboman Now I'm wondering, how does one lend out a beard?

Forgot yesterday's workout - walked with my and another family, and then spent 2 hours of trying to ice skate with the kids. It's not my actual idea of fun, but I figured it was a workout and it was good hanging out with them. The husbands both got cold and ended up taking the kids who were done skating for hot chocolate.
Today kids had to say goodbye to their new friends, so I got up early and took the 2 that woke up in time for a morning walk. We had a nice dog escort when we turned onto "his" road. He barked to greet us, then went slightly ahead of us, checking everything out as he went.6 -

I waited until afternoon to run today so that the icy spots had a chance to thaw. I met a couple of friends and was able to run in the sunshine and 37F temps. Rain is supposed to start in the morning and last all day.

Thanks @polskagirl01 . I like to ice skate, but haven't in a long time. I don't do well, but do do better at that than roller skating - which is how I broke my elbow back in 1994. I fell backwards and put my hands down to break my fall. I thought I was okay...felt like I had hit my funny bone. But, it got stiffer and stiffer and in a couple of hours I couldn't move my elbow at all. Turned out I had fractured it from the jarring effect. My wrists were fine. Thought that was weird. Anyway, sounds like a great day and great workout. Love the mountain picture! What is in that shed? Cute that the dog led the way on his road.
Good call @Teresa502 . I started to run outside this afternoon, but wound up on the treadmill instead as time got away from me and it would have been getting cold before I finished.
Today is the first anniversary of my open heart surgery (aneurysm repair). To celebrate, I had intended to run 3.65 miles (for the 365 days in the year), but, as I said above, time got away from me. So, instead, I walked one mile for warm up and cool down and ran 2.65 miles so the total distance was 3.65 miles.

@Tramboman - I hear you on the wind. Why/how is it that the wind is always in our faces?!? Makes me crazy to feel like I am always running against it! Also I agree with @quilteryoyo that we need an ice beard picture!
@rheddmobile - Love those raccoons. I am surprised momma wouldn't keep the babies all together but maybe the older litter would be mean to the younger ones. Also amazed that there are 2 albino raccoons! I hope no one ever hurts them. They sound so sweet.
@polskagirl01 - Eleven if your conference attendee friends don't realize how bada$$ you are we all know! And yes I think we all come here to talk about our running and hiking exploits because our friends and family don't understand and don't want to hear about them any longer!
@skippygirlsmom - my daughter worked at REI for several years in college. I wasn't running then but sure wish I had been! She did get me several 'gifts' that I still have and use today but of course not running related.
@summerskier - We are the same with staying home because of covid again. Stocked up at Costco early on Thursday but not taking any chances with my husband. Luckily I can get out for runs without seeing many people if anyone.
@katharmonic - I am impressed you got out and ran at all, pretty sure I would have told then all to just go ahead without me! Honestly I am impressed with all of you getting out in thee cold temps and so much snow!
So much snow for so many of you! It was low 60's and gorgeous here today. Not running tomorrow but it is supposed to be mid-70's.
I ran yesterday and it was low 50's, cloudy, foggy, drizzly with a cold wind. I had a pretty good run until around mile 4 or so then I started hurting all over so I tried taking it easier and walking more coming home. Today I went out with a plan to get my Hot Chocolate 15k done. Initially it felt great. The sun was shining and it was high 50's and I was determined to get it done. Somewhere along the way I lost my Skratch fruit gels somewhere along the way so I had no fuel but I had oatmeal before I left and was so glad I did! After about 5 miles I started hurting but I was determined to keep going. It helped that it was just so nice out, so I walked when I needed to and ran when I could - just keeping it sleazy!
Hoping I hear from my doctor next week with test results and some path forward to get beyond everything hurting.
Run the World - we have 14 participants and so far are staying ahead of pace. We are heading into the outskirts of Barcelona (best Sangria according to my daughter) on our way to see @polskagirl01 and her lovely, if cold, running locales!

Cloudy, drizzly, upper 30s F, and a gusty south wind today. Low back was tight again, but loosened up nicely after the first kilometer. Got my heart rate up close to 180 bpm, so it was a good run. Saw a couple of robins, a few squirrels, and a red tailed hawk.
@polskagirl01 I don't know how one ends out a beard, either, but I hope it's not done Hannibal Lecter style.
@quilteryoyo Congratulations on your Aneur-versary!! Happy you're here to celebrate it with us!6 -
@quilteryoyo I will take your advice and go to a couple of new and different running stores for their inputs. I've studied shoes on youtube and websites, tried on so many. I've been to road runner sports for foot analysis, to a podiatrist, and to PT. I tried!
I ran in Nike Pegasus very happily for 15-17 years. Then the model design changed - and I gained 20 lbs - and my body is much older! I need shoes that come in Wide to accomodate my slight bunions, have a heel-toe-drop of 12mm ideally (thanks to childhood ballet I have high arches), joint deformity in the left toe from an injury but it's not severe enough yet the podiatrist says, for surgery; I supinate naturally and am a forefoot-midfoot striker. I like a responsive shoe with a bit a firmness in the forefoot yet fully flexible in midfoot/arch area, one without cushioning that makes my feet sink into the shoe.
Brooks Adrenaline so far give me no foot pain and are manageable except the heel-toe drop is not enough and overall the shoe feels clunky and heavy. At 4 miles I feel whole-body aching - joints, bones, muscles, all of it and even with 1-2 days off exercise days prior and decent diet, so it's the shoes.
I'll bet the real solution is to lose the 20 lbs. and get new shoes with a better insole for me.
Sorry for the rant guys but this is helping to motivate me to get to the best solution

Way to go getting your virtual Hot Chocolate run done @shanaber. I hope you get some answers from your test results.
@globalhiker – Have you tried the Brooks Ghosts? I like them better than the Adrenalines. Except for the Brooks 13 model – don’t try them on. Unlike prior versions the 13s feel clunky and non-supportive to me. I also have a wide foot and need to loose at least 20 pounds…..

Last long run before race day ended up even longer than planned because I cannot do math while running. I didn’t take the time to map out a run and ended up having to make a turn decision with less that a mile to go. I chose poorly. Oh well, it’s not like an extra 0.5 mile will kill me. Because I did a pace workout the day before, I was running on tired legs and the run felt a little harder. I kept my long run pace about a minute slower that race pace then tried to pick it up to my targeted HM race pace for the last mile and a bit. It actually felt good to up the effort level and I got close to target pace, which is encouraging given how tired my legs were.
@quilteryoyo I am doing the Aramco HM in Houston. It is the HM associated with the Houston marathon, so it’s a big race that usually attracts some fast runners. It is so well organized and has such great crowd support. I am hoping for a PR and really need to sit down this week and figure out my strategy.
@tramboman Weather has been all over the place this winter. Right now it is looking like almost perfect conditions for race day. About 40 in the corrals warming up to about 50 during the race. I am also running the 5k the day before and there is chance for rain right now, so hoping that doesn’t materialize. I like running in the rain usually, but not when it’s cold.6 -
SummerSkier wrote: »@shanaber when you sayI ran yesterday and it was low 50's, cloudy, foggy, drizzly with a cold wind. I had a pretty good run until around mile 4 or so then I started hurting all over
@globalhiker - No worries on ranting! That is what we are here for. I was going suggest something like Altra's since they are nice and wide, until I saw that you need a 12mm drop. I too have pretty wide feet and a bunion on my right foot and looked and looked for wide women's running shoes and they are so hard to find. I have tried Altra's and they are ok but I mostly run in Topo's but they too don't have a high drop, most are 0 and maybe up to 3 or 4mm.
@martaindale - enjoy your taper week!

If anyone has been looking to order a RoadId bracelet or tags I have a $10 off coupon code - 104FRIEND85
I used to wear a separate bracelet, have had tags for my shoes, etc. but when I got the pacemaker it was recommended I have some sort of notification info with me all the time. So I got a tag for my watch band that is on all the time and shows as a medical alert in addition to having the contact info for my husband.2 -
@quilteryoyo I think it was cement blocks and bricks. Similar shacks in the area were filled with wood.1
