This November the 28th, (my late Dad's birthday) will mark my 4th year on this thread.
Not only has it kept me accountable for my alcohol consumption, it truly has become a community for me, especially while we were in various lockdowns.
Sticking with my (reachable) goal of the last few years, 16-20 AF days. I have been successful each month with this expect for most recently in September when I was having a Margarita every day in Mexico and reached only 14AF for the month.
Diary Style:
Sunday November 13 - AF - I had a hankering for a Manhattan, but I didn't have any Vermouth and didn't go out to get any. Whew, that was far too many daily drinks days.
Monday November 14 - AF - I guess that I just want to have drinks every day, but I know that it is disastrous for my weight. Long way yet to get to my 16 this month!!
Tuesday November 15 - AF - Split shifts the next 2, getting home so late often leads to drinks for me, I will have to have some willpower considering I need at least 10 more AF days with the month already half over.
Wednesday November 16 - AF - That was a tough one, but really glad that I stayed AF. I set myself up for this by having too many drinks days at the beginning of the month. I think that I do much better when I have drink days every 3 or 4 instead of feeling like I have to string a whole bunch together. If I set Tuesday as a day where I can have a couple of drinks then it is easier to wait for that, and consequently wait after that until Friday because it is schedule. What works for one person doesn't work for all of course. Many 6 minute waits last night!
Thursday November 17 - 2 drinks - I shoveled when I got home from work last night, and pretty much poured a cocktail as soon as I got inside. I didn't even give the 6 minute thing a try. Now I will have to limit my Friday and Saturday drink days, going to try for 1 out of 2 instead of both. Minus 20 here at 8:30 this morning. Glad that I shoveled last night! It is beautiful and blue and clear. Crisp lol.

@dawnbgethealthy - The spreading it out every 3 or 4 days works better for me too.4

A busy day.... Hope everyone has a good weekend!

Good news: we won our tennis match! That so rarely happens! Very happy about that. Bad news is I pulled a muscle in my glute at the gym this morning, and pulled it again playing tennis. So, resting tonight and expecting to be hobbling tomorrow!
Ran errands after tennis, sat in a ton of traffic, and really, really, wanted a glass of wine when I got home. But we don’t have any. I did find some yummy port in the cabinet. Then I had to clean the house, and the feeling didn’t pass. I am having one more “cape cod” to stave it off the craving. I’m just exhausted, think I’ll just go to bed and not drink.8 -
Tis the season to eat, drink, and be regretful. Absolutely HUGE hug to all those who are caught up in the madness.
Since joining Middle Daughter last month in her abstaining A while mourning her furry friend of many years, I really haven't kept track of A-AF days, just noticed there have been long stretches when I can't remember having a drink. Then, open a bottle of wine, spend a few days finishing it, then, back to alcohol free. No stressing about it. That's probably my best option forever.
I do have a question about how MFP works...I would really like to find out things like the names of the art galleries where some members display their works, if I could purchase their creations online, recipies from some of the "chefs" whose parties make my mouth water...but I've been reluctant to ask, or invade their privacy. Not knowing how asking to be a "friend" works...?? I recently had a message on my personal e-mail from someone that I had never heard about, had a screen name that did not aline with my values or interests, but wanted to be my "friend".
Did MFP just pass on this request without releasing my e-mail ?? Shouldn't it have been part of some "internal" MFP communication ?? I'm just uneasy about this...I guess I'm a hermit at heart. I do not do Facebook or any other kind of "social media".

Hey everybody! This is my 5th month and I am so grateful to have found this group!
My goal is to not turn to alcohol this month no matter how stressful work or my physical health gets!
Best wishes to everyone to meet their goals this month!

11/8-11/14: 7 days AF

Yesterday was the first day since my diagnosis that I was able to work a full 10 hour day without a nap or anxiety attack. It felt good.
I have a surgery date, December 6. I also figured out I have 14 doctors appointments between today and December 6. I guess they like to keep you busy?
11/16: AF
I feel like I’m a bundle of joy (note: sarcasm) every time I write. Biopsies of lymph nodes today. I slept awful last night and I’m just not able to put a positive spin on this today. 😮💨Deep breath. Gotta move forward.
11/18: AF
I can’t believe it’s already November 18! Yesterday’s procedure was painful and long. Sleeping last night was kind of a joke. I’m icing my armpits now, which is a weird feeling and a weird thing to type.
Let’s go out there and kick this world’s *kitten* today! 💪🏼
11/19: AF
Still in pain from Thursdays procedure. Kinda depressed today. Gotta figure out how to get out of this funk.5 -
@joans1976
Of course you are in a funk! Wow, so much going on with you health wise. Results to come in from your painful procedure, surgery on the docket for a few weeks from now, horrible job, delayed Bali. Hang in there and come out the other side with renewed resolve and a lust for life.
Huge hugs!!5 -
@forestdweller1
I believe that we all get those shady friend requests. I think that some bad actors just mass invite people.
MFP forwards the request to your email, but the requester does not get your email address.
At the top of your home page on MFP you will see an icon with friend requests. You can go in there and "decline".
If you want to "friend" someone so that you can message them I think that you click on their name and request to become friends. At that point you can write to them.
I love what you said about having a bottle of wine over a couple of days and then not at all for awhile ... forever. Great that you can do that : - )4 -

Friday November 18 - AF - I awoke with the sniffles, took some Dayquil and went to work. All of the young-uns at work have been sick over the past 2 weeks, and I was priding myself in being healthier than them all and not catching it. Spoke too soon. Glad to be on days off, plans are out the window because of a runny nose - lots of Christmas fairs and stuff over the weekend. However, another minus 20 day so I will stay in my warm house and continue to process and cook my harvest and maybe get some of the buckets of veggies out of my living room. Yes yes a Brandy while I was in a hot bath last night was surely tempting with my cold, but I refrained.

Hi All - I'm Robyn. I've been away but I'm back. I have found that I don't meet my goals without the support of this group and I've missed everyone. My goal is 16-20 AF days in a month targeting no more than 2 drinks in a day and no more than 7 in a week.
11/13: Drinks (1) - Had a glass of wine. Plan was AF, but 1 is better than 2
11/14: AF - Had a virgin Cape Cod (club soda and cranberry) with dinner
11/15: AF - Stuck to plan, 45-minute spin workout, another virgin cape cod
11/16: AF - On a roll. Had a 70 calorie "Run Wild" NA IPA
11/17: Drinks (3) - Thursday night is date night (had 2 wines with dinner and a beer later with hubs). Also got into the late-night snacking. I hate it when I do that.
11/18: Drinks (3) - We went out after dinner to go for a walk downtown. I had a glass of wine at a local bar and then 2 vodka craft drinks at a new distillery. This wasn’t my plan but it was a fun night!

Hi friends, I did good last night and put myself to bed before 8 pm. You can likely tell I've been moody and guess what, I had 2 (unplanned) in-office medical biopsies and was told to stay home for a few days and just sit or lie down to recover. No exercise for a week. I expect good things since the odds are in my favor and I choose to not worry about things that just (way) outta my control.
Separate note - I am thankful for social media like this. What you write inspires me and helps me.
I want to drink and I have no wine. UGH and on a Saturday night! Trying to stay dry until the holiday.

@dawnbgethealthy Thank you so much for understanding, it makes my eyes well up with tears. I just feel like I come on this thread and don’t have a lot of good news. That I’m not able to put a positive spin on it. ❤️

Alcohol in any amount absolutely ruins my sleep and I read if you do not get sufficient sleep in your 50s and 60's you are at a much higher risk for developing dementia. Is a nightly wine habit worth that? Anyway I did not indulge yesterday and slept like a baby and feel refreshed today. I wish I could bottle this feeling and draw on it when I feel temptation. I enjoy reading the tips and coping strategies here.
This post really spoke to me. Nightly wine isn't worth it but cravings are so strong. That's why this group helps. I'm still drinking more than I'd like to, but not drinking everyday anymore.8 -

@dawnbgethealthy feel better! Hope your cold is mild- and not Covid!!!!
@globalhiker hope your biopsies are negative. Rest up girl!
@joans1976 internet hugs to you! No one can blame you for being down. You have a lot going on.
Had two glasses of wine last night with some Chinese takeout. No surprises here, my weight is up! But that’s got to be salt, etc. I slept terribly because of that second glass of wine. So I’m not going to repeat that today.

November accountability: 5 days AF
Alcohol: 14 days (32 drinks)
Goal: Limit 2 glasses per day; 12-16 AF days per month. Aim to drink no more than 2 nights in a row.
11/19 - 2 wine; 39th wedding anniversary dinner. After finishing 1 bottle of wine we wanted to head to the liquor store to buy B&B but didn’t, didn’t open a 2nd bottle of wine either though we do have a number of bottles on hand, then thought oh we can have a crown and coke while watching the late evening LSU game but didn’t5 -

Somehow I got my dates messed up, I post the next morning about the day before.
Right before I woke up I was dreaming I was drinking a beer, which is odd because beer has never been my drink of choice. In the dream I could taste it and feel the bubbles on my tongue, it was very real.
Starting today until my surgery December 6 my work hours are 7-3 instead of 8 to whenever I get finished. I put out a message stating some firm boundaries about contacting me and frankly, if people bother me outside of work times, I won’t reply. It’s too bad a cancer diagnosis was what made me get to this point.
Happiest of Mondays to all. 🤪8 -
@dawnbgethealthy Sorry to hear about the sad Manhattan incident. If you don’t get your AF days in, there’s always next month and we are still going to be here!3

Sending more good thoughts to @joans1976. Good for you for setting limits at work!
@dawnbgethealthy the Manhattan incident! Oh no!
DH and I went to an Irish pub in our town last night. Our family had been going there for years until it closed during COVID. New owners bought it, updated it and re-opened this weekend. They did a good job - - enough of the old to be familiar but much more inviting now. I had the signature potato soup (not a lo-cal choice!) but skipped the beer. I went with a "clear virgin cape cod" (just soda water from the bar tap). I'm saving the drinks for tonight's dinner with a friend and then Thanksgiving.
AF - Nov 1-4, 4, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13 -17, 19, 20 [total: 15]
A- Nov 5 (1 wine), 6 (4 oz beer), 9 (1wine), 12 (beer), 18 (beer) [total: 5]
Have a good day!5 -
@Lilylady3k happy anniversary!!!!
@joans1976 welp, there’s one good thing about your cancer diagnosis, your new-found ability to set work boundaries. A very dim silver lining, to be sure, but hey, let’s take our wins where we can!
Only one glass at lunch, still slept terribly last night. Hmmm. I’ll be AF today, but tomorrow is lunch out, Wednesday is wine night at work, and then I gird my loins for hosting Thanksgiving. I’ll really have to moderate, and not go over two all day. Micro-sips to the rescue!5 -

11/20: AF - Last night I wanted that glass of wine with dinner but I didn't do it, which was the plan but it was hard. I had to really have the conversation with myself - ya' know - the one with the angel me on one shoulder and the devil me on the other.

@dawnbgethealthy Sorry to hear about the sad Manhattan incident. If you don’t get your AF days in, there’s always next month and we are still going to be here!
I have only had one month since November 2018 that I didn't reach my goal, and that was September of this year. I think that I can make it : - )
Manhattan's aren't going anywhere, I could have made another right then and there. I have the ingredients if I feel like having one some other time.
So glad that you set boundaries at work. That was overdue. I feel like this is going to really help with your work stress.
I also do all of my posting in the mornings, the morning after on this one. Long ago I got in this habit because I wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to have a drink after posting. I posted if I made it to morning without drinks, or with. It is not as dangerous any more, but when I was weaning myself off of daily drinks that is how it was. Now I just don't go on to the forums in the evenings at all, easier to do everything in the morning with my coffee.6 -

Sunday November 20 - AF - Getting closer to the 50%. I picked up several extra shifts at work for people this coming week which can go either way: too tired to bother having drinks, or too tired for my willpower to work. Aiming for AF days the next 4-5
