Feeling much improved after a nap. I've washed my hair, which always helps!
The menu tonight includes dhansak, a curried lentil dish, so I'm having that. Missing my spices!
Long coach trip tomorrow, so I'm being careful with the alcohol tonight. Just had a diet Pepsi, but will be having champagne with my curry!
Sorry I'm not commenting much on other posts, but it's as much as I can do to post stuff. I am reading and cheering and crying. Love you 😍

I got to the gym today! When I was working on a Tuesday, I’d still get to the gym but I always felt a bit rushed because their first class is at 12:15 so I had to be sure to be out of there by 12. Well, today I went early and wasn’t feeling rushed at all. I did have a regular doctor appt but unless I have something scheduled, I may be able to use their sauna on Tuesdays. I haven’t used it in years. Work tomorrow so no formal exercise. Maybe I’ll get a walk in
After exercise went to WalMart, and after the doctor’s went to the dollar store and then Food Lion
katla – so glad you had a good time
Mary Terese – welcome! Just jump in when something strikes you
Vicki – One of Vince’s vehicles is quite high, too. We had a running board put on it. So now I step onto the running board and then into the car. A while ago I was in someone’s car (I don’t remember who) and it was high. I really missed that running board
barbie – Jess just called to say that she’s oncall Christmas but wondered if we could go up there. She really doesn’t have any family here and at least Denise has Pete’s family. It would be nice if Denise came to Jess’ but that’s not going to happen. Not in this lifetime, anyway. We told Jess that at Thanksgiving we were thinking of staying an extra day and bringing Loki with us. She seemed happy about that. We shall see, we still have to work out the “cat-angements”
Need to mash the potatoes for Vince and then I think I’ll take a walk.
Ceramics tonight

Heather, I am loving your posts. They're wonderful.
Katla, Sounds as if your husband is getting good care in an appropriate facility. That's good. Your daughter is to be commended for making sure Dad is so well taken care of.

I'm so proud of my brother. Since getting Covid and breaking his foot a year ago, he had become very deconditioned and put on a lot of weight, about 50lbs. I suggested he start walking while staying with me - we have a safe neighborhood that is nice to walk in - and without further prompting, he is up to 2 miles/day. He will be ready to walk to the museum and to church when he moves! We spoke with the apartment manager today for him, and she said carpeting still needs to be done, and a closet re-do. Then he'll be able to move in. I am guessing 2 weeks. We'll just keep plugging away getting everything purchased and packed so he'll be completely ready when the movers come. Then it's our turn. One day/one step at a time.
His latest artwork entitled, "Winged Victory":

Recd box from eldest sailor and he bought a bunch of Japanese momentos. I wrapped up a kimono and matching umbrella for Athena, a tea set and door plaque for us, and other little things.💖. He's so thoughtful.💖
Woke up to our electric heater not cycling on. So the owner of the management company comes by for a look see. He changed the thermostat, nope, he looks out at the heater in the garage, but didn't see anything amiss. So he'll call his heating company they use. Husband asked him about our upstairs toilet. He was not aware of the problem. We had it looked at in August when I noticed a bubble in the kitchen ceiling below where the bathroom is located. In September the water was turned off behind the toilet and they opened up the ceiling to get a moisture reading. Its taped up but that's it. Hey we're paying for a rental with 3 bathrooms not 1 and a half baths. If people visit for the holidays it will be awkward for people to have to go thru our bedroom to get to the only working toilet upstairs. At one point Lee said if they don't fix the heater or toilet lets just find another place. The fact that he put the work order in online for the heater, and the owner came by in a couple hours says loads. The owner also said if we need more space heaters he can bring some by. That's nice. We have one we can bring down for when we sit and eat dinner. Then bring it up when we go to bed. The propane fireplace still comes on in our sons side of the main floor. But we don't have any couches or seating over there except my office chair for my desk.
On day three eating my daily sandwich of turkey, tomato, cheese, lettuce (I put ff dressing on the lettuce so its a mini salad on my sandwich). Just love it. Yesterday I had a mug of soup husband shared with me. It was a bit of chowder, so I added a bit more milk, a pat of butter, and 5 shrimp cut up and covered with Old Bay seasoning. It was delightful! It made a hearty mug of soup. I might make more of that today.
My middle son got his box of cookies and sent me a video thanking me. Sweet.💖. Poor Athena was under the weather and gurgled a thank you for the stickers while lying on the couch. Poor thing.😢💖
Hugs ladies!

Hello everyone. Deborah, Seattle, 52, married 16 yrs. My need to lose weight has not escaped my attention for the last 5 years. However, the dieting just did not sound like something I wanted to endure no matter how disappointed in my body I had become. We love cooking, we love dining (not just eating), we have aspired to consider ourselves (and be considered by those around us) highly skilled home chefs capable of achieving glorious multi-course meals presented with splendor. I can whip up a chateaubriand in no time flat, make chicken Parmesan that makes Italian grannies ask me for my recipe, and bake bread that will make you give up store bought forever. We have always been conscious of salt, balanced nutrition, quality of dietary inputs…but we did not skimp on ingredients because of fat content.
However….
Mr. had a long time mitral valve issue needing repair. He is 66 now and retiring so it was time to get it taken care of. All of the pre surgery tests revealed a 70% blockage on the main heart artery. It went from a simple outpatient 2 little incision procedure to full on open heart surgery in a blink of an eye. October 21 was to be the day. It was the worst day of my life waiting in a hospital parking garage for the update phone calls every hour. Finally after 12 hours he had come around enough for me to see him. He looked horrible. My strong beautiful man who takes command of a room just by walking in looked pale, weak and helpless lying there with all the tubes and cords attached everywhere. He was alive though and the surgery was “textbook perfect” said one of THE best cardiac surgeons in Seattle. His recovery began to skyrocket the next morning. Released from ICU a day early, released from hospital 3 days early, and once home I had a mission. The rollercoaster of emotions I went through, the voracity of the fear and utter terror of that experience was what I needed to shock me into the needed state of mind.
I cleaned out the fridge and went shopping. Fat free, salt free, fresh and lean filled up the empty space. I intended to only feed him foods that would build his strength, regenerate his bone and cartilage for repairing the wired shut bits and pieces, cutting out the sugars and sodium’s to minimize inflammation in the healing environment, high iron and minerals to rebuild his blood after surgery even though he had no transfusions. Due to the post operative need for temporary warfarin to ensure no blood clots form during these first 90 days, I have to avoid vitamin K foods like avocado, leafy greens, etc. And, sadly, our daily G&T (gin and tonic) at 6 pm went away. BUT, I was intent on eating exactly what he ate, #1 so he did not feel like he was missing out, but #2 for self preservation. I need to make 5 small meals a day. I don’t have time to cook two menus as well.
I found this free site to help me track nutrition stats with as little effort as possible on Oct 28. I figured while I was doing it I might as well track my own health stats. We began this journey on October 21, surgery day…he was 205, I was 230. His hospital stay, the effects of the surgery, the loss of his appetite for 5 days and his low activity gave him a huge head start. He came home at 185. We have been eating nearly perfect…his energy is increasing, he had a two mile day this weekend, but napped a lot the next day so meals fit in to his awake hours and revolve around him. I set my calorie intake to a 1500 level and our sodium to 1000 or less. I just did a morning weigh in…I’m down 10 pounds. My activity level is about 3000 steps just being on my feet all day cooking/prepping 5 meals and cleaning up so it is not stemming from an increase in activity. It’s all about the foods. Now I do have to say, I end the night praying for sleep to come because I’m STARVING to death, but I have to tell my self it is not actual hunger, it is my body burning excess calories from fat stores. He allowed a bag of Reese’s Peanut butter cups to fall in the cart, he blamed it on Halloween (we have never had one trick or treater in all these years…we are too far out in the country). I have not had one, but boy do they sing the sirens song at about 10 pm!
We are basically eating “The Mediterranean Diet” but I did not know that until reading some recipes yesterday. I’m having to force him to eat his volume of food because he is needing about 1800-2000 calories as he is only 3 pounds to his “best” weight of 175. We need to slow him down on loosing and balance him back to maintaining. For me though…I have a ways to go. My last great body shape and weight was 2015. I was ~145, size 6, flat tummied in my little string bikini and feeling great. I changed jobs, was not happy there, it was a food company so food all around all day every day. Left in 2019, then Covid happened and we really used cooking and eating as our entertainment. NOW though…I feel the drive I have needed to make the scale move down. I do not know what my best weight will be at the age of 52. I do not know if I feel the need to be a size 6 again. We are building a new home in Montana to retire there next year… I don’t know how much bikini wearing I’ll do in grizzly bear country or how much of a need to be fashion forward there. I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing.
Thanks for letting me introduce myself and give a back story. I may need some support or motivation in future when he is at his maintain point and eating things I can’t have. It will be a long winter but hopefully I can wear a new bathing suit for a spring trip to Maui without having too many moments of setbacks, failures or weight loss depression between now and then.15 -

Had routine bloodwork then treated myself to a Dunkin donut holiday blend coffee with cream, sugar free vanilla flavoring, and stevia, yummy! Also had snaking bacon for protein. Then went to Walmart as they had turkeys for 97 cents a pound so got one of those, then post office. On my way home I remembered that I forgot to order dogs heart pills, so another trip tomorrow!

Welcome Deborah from Seattle soon to be Montana! My eldest sister used to live in Great Falls Montana. I took an Amtrak from Portland Oregon back in 2020 to visit. So much sky!!! I felt a wee bit overcome with the wide sense of space. Husband and I moved from Hammond Oregon (by Astoria on the coast) up to Whidbey Island WA, to share a huge rental with active duty son back in 2018. So coming from an island 37 miles long and 10 miles wide, it was only natural to be overwhelmed by Montana🙃😜!
I too am a foodie, I am presently 232 lbs, husband is 190 lbs. He had a liver transplant back in 2014, and he's doing well. Being retired Navy, I tell people that the Navy ruined his taste buds years ago. I play chef for his meals, then I do my own thing. Like today. I was going to have a sandwich but thought a nice hot soup would be better.
So I cubed up some potatoes, boiling them. Sauted onions, mushrooms, roasted garlic paste and a T of butter. I then dissolved a tsp of better than bullion chicken stock paste in 2 cups of hot water and added that to my pan. I cut up 8 jumbo, cooked deveined shrimp, tossed with Old Bay and a spoonful of flour. I then added that with the drained cubed potatoes to my pan. I finally added milk, with corn starch, more Old Bay, pepper, and turmeric. It was simply heaven. I ate everything!
I eat usually just one meal a day. But its called "dirty fasting" best I have my coffee with creamer and Truvia sweetener in the morning and afternoon.
Again nice to meet you Pacific Northwestie!

I emailed the race officials about changing our results for the run. We registered for the 1/2 marathon so when you don’t go that distance your chip time shows as disqualified cuz you didn’t run that distance. I told them that we did the 10k and if they could change it so our results would shoe for that distance. They changed it and I was shocked that even with my backpack and not even running the whole distance I still came in 4th out of 27 in my age group! We have never walked any run we’ve done, we always ran so this is a first and it was only because of Kirby’s foot.

I have visited DH more than once. His place in the facility is crowded with random stuff. It doesn’t seem clean or tidy. I am not eager to move there. Our daughter’s work place is near by, and she sees him regularly. That is a plus. I like the place here, where he and I have a nice apartment. There are nurses here that available to help. The situation is complicated.
Is the "random stuff" medical equipment used to monitor your husband's condition?
I suspect that he needs more medical care than the nurses in your apartment are able to provide. Has someone explained his current condition and prognosis?
Has there been a suggestion that you move to where he is now?

Well finally yesterday I tested negative for Covid, so 2 more days of full masking in and outside per doctors orders and then just at my discretion - Having had Covid, I don’t know if I will ever take my mask off indoors with bigger groups of people, especially those I do not know. I wanted to believe it was a “bad cold” or minor flu, but for me it was not. I was miserable.
One of the things I had not shared as I really did not want to think about it is that in the week I got covid my house turned 62 and celebrated by breaking down…. REALLY I would have rather done a party. But the plumbing system under the house sprung a leak, the heater stopped working (granted it is a crappy wall unit that heats mostly a bathroom) the fireplace insert blower stopped working and I used a space heater and melted an electrical connection. So as I called around for different professionals to fix the issues, no one will come into a home with Covid. So I waited, and managed. But yesterday ½ of the plumbing under my home was fully replaced, today the wall unit has been repaired. So I have water and some heat. Thursday the electrician comes over and I have a call in about the fireplace. Gratitude to the repair professionals, gratitude to indoor plumbing, a heater, and electrical is immense.
And while nothing has been cheap, both of the professionals have been helpful on how to shave dollars off the total, and to make this work the best for me. Again grateful!!!

Had the day off today because the daycare girl was running a fever last night- Worked out nice so I didn't have to go out in the storm to pick her up.
Planned on starting to clear off the treadmill in the garage on Thursday(my usual day off from her) but told myself I would start with half an hour today and my goal was to have it done by Sunday night. Well, got started and kept going- all cleared off and ready to go. I will have to move a couple boxes each time I use it but not too bad. They are Christmas craft supplies so they will be coming in the house soon. Hoping Ezie and I can use up a lot of it so I don't have to pack it up again.
My friend wants me to walk tonight- will have to wait and see- supposed to be raining again soon-has been off and on all day.I told her maybe, but available any other night this week.
Mom called me. The friend of her's that surprised her last month, coming for a visit told mom's room mate everything I had told her about the room mate before she got there- just a little warning. The room mate confronted my mom about it yesterday, Saying "Debbie said .... , Debbie said that..." Saying she was just there to help mom, she was worried about her being there by herself. It wasn't pleasant but it got the conversation going that mom should have had months ago and she had the guts to tell her what she thought. She kept telling me that she wasn't mad at me at all. Winnie, her friend of well over 50 yrs(I thought she was my cousin until recently) chose to side with the room mate that she had never met. Now mom said she doesn't care if she ever sees her again- Hopefully they will work things out. Mom said she doesn't like being told what to do, especially by them.
Had left over chicken breast cooked with mushrooms and cream of mushroom soup and two small red potatoes- at 450 calories for the day- need to figure out dinner. Will make sure to stay at 1000 beings I didn't walk at all today. Only have 3000 steps(compared to 22,000 yesterday-that is NOT my usual)
Debbie

Kim - Bless your heart, so hard when the hits just keep hitting harder. Glad you can see your way through to gratitude for the good parts, you're one of the strongest people I know.
Barbara - I really have been skimming too much, totally missed your hell-ride to get home, had to go find it. Glad you're OK!
Heather - Glad you got some sleep - sounds like it's all been go-go-go. You're going to some beautiful places, and we so appreciate the pictures!
Karen - Your brother's paintings continue to make my heart soar. Such a gift!
Today's gratitude: I am grateful for books in general and specific. I still love the smell of books and bookstores (especially the ones with coffee shops inside). I love my Kindle, though, and books, unfortunately, can't compete with a backlit screen and text that you can change the size. I seldom actually buy a book anymore, just the Kindle editions. I think "Stranger in a Strange Land," by Robert Heinlein, was the first book that truly impacted how I thought about a lot of things. It still does.
Welcome to our newest members of the thread - you are so welcome, please come back often--we are a chatty bunch, and the thread moves fast!
Corey's cooking my shrimp scampi, and it smells amaze-balls, so I'm off to look over his shoulder. Take that back, I'm 5'2" and he's 6 foot, so maybe I'll just look around him...

Lisa- I love the image of you trying to see over his shoulder. Reminds me of former hubby and I. He is 6'2" and I am just 5'.
Nice that he is cooking dinner for you.
Dh is at his mom's, like every morning and evening and eating over there. Ds and his girlfriend are making tuna melts for themselves. Not sure what I will have yet. Will figure it out when they are done in the kitchen. Having some decaf tea for now but hungry.
Need to feed the backyard cats before it gets dark.
Spent the day in my pj pants. Did get half way dressed, which is more than I did on Sunday.0 -
Deborah in Seattle, Welcome. I found MFP at age 62 after a lifetime of failed attempts to lose weight and keep it off. It helped that my husband had health concerns that made him ready to make changes, too. One of the first decisions I made was to find recreation and entertainment that didn't include food. I also gave up being the best baker in the world of chocolate chip cookies. I gave away baking supplies and haven't baked since. It has helped me to read and participate in this thread every day. I listen to podcasts about health and forming good habits and read books on the same subjects. Health and longevity have become very important to us. I hope you will come back and become part of our friendly community.

Karen – you SHOULD be proud of your brother, I know I am
Debbs – welcome! Thank you for sharing your story, it was great. I know you will do this, keep coming back
pip – you’re awesome (and Kirby ain’t bad either)
Kim – honey, what happened to you all at one time was awful
Just found out that Jess’ friend, her 3 children and her hubby along with Jess and Colby will be here for the entire weekend. I thought they were just coming for a visit. Now to think about food. See, we’re really not into going out to eat. Since her children are preteens, one meal I was thinking of was spaghetti, maybe Fri night if they’re going to be here then. Sunday before they leave, if it’s in the afternoon, I’m thinking maybe a pizza just so they have something on their stomach. Sandwiches for lunch Saturday, But what to have for dinner Saturday that Vince will eat? Jess will have to take care of breakfast Saturday since I’ll be at work. I’m thinking we’ll go out for breakfast on Sunday.
Went to ceramics tonight. They’re not pouring anything and they’re giving away a lot of things (like stamps). Well, it’s that much less that they have to move. Getting rid of some molds, too.

What about tacos for Saturday night- make a taco bar so everyone makes their own.
3 -
I love the taco bar idea, but you can do a similar thing with baked potatoes - cheese/bacon/broccoli/chili.... With picky eaters and mixed ages and types of eaters (veggie/gluten free...) a "bar" with what ever theme makes it easier on the hostess and everyone can find something they will eat.

I did my dumbbell routine - twenty reps. Yay!

Mary - I hope you are able to reach a solution of some kind for your travel needs.
Ginny - I am a very social person when it comes to my family. I do turn down a lot of friend invitations and I don’t join organizations or anything. I do for pleasure mostly.
I hope your brother listens. I understand his need to feel like it should be happening quicker. I just had that conversation about my hip. It’s been more than 3 years and I still suffer if I overdo it.
Katla - it is such a difficult time for you and your DH. I’m sure you’d daughter is doing the best she can.
Lisa - I’m tired of your election too. 😂. The electoral system in the States is so much more than Canada. I feel like you have elections every year in one form or other.
Rosemarie - One of the Nora Roberts Books that I have read over and over is actually a trilogy and is set in Ireland. They are called Tears of the Moon, Jewels of the Sun and Heart of the Sea. The Gallagher’s of Ardmore series.
Barbie - my DH is working on a snow removal crew with the city this winter. We ordered a heated jacket for him, it finally came in today and he is in a plow driving tonight. It’s very light I bet it would be great for walking.
Rebecca - I hope the owner gets everything repaired quickly. I would say someone dropped the ball.
I hope Athena feels better soon.
Kim - I hope this is the end of repairs for quite some time for you.
Covid did not affect me much at all. My 31 year old daughter suffered terribly. We were not vaccinated the same. I believe she had a different variant than I did. Others at work that had theirs the same time as my daughter also were more sick than those that tested positive when I did. I think we are far from out of this yet.
Karen - your brother is doing great.
I have been Christmas shopping and didn’t have a clue where I stood so tonight I sorted and made some lists. Turns out I’m almost done. I have some things to purchase, but I have the ideas and that is always the most difficult.
I’m struggling with the time change and incredible cold and snow. I think I’ll head to bed soon.
