Less Alcohol ~ DECEMBER 2022 ~ One Day At A Time

I am Dawn, I live in SE BC Canada
My primary motivation for drinking less is weight loss.
I throw up if I have more than 3 drinks, so moderation on drink days is rarely an issue for me lol.
My recurring goal is 16-20 AF days per month. I squeaked to 16 last month.
I like to do this diary style to keep track.
Saturday December 03 - 2 drinks
Sunday December 04 - AF
Monday December 05 - AF, planning AF until Friday. Just catching up with forums this morning
Tuesday December 06 - 2 1/2 drinks, 1/2 too many apparently, I thought that I was going to throw up. I am okay with having drinks midweek, just not having a stretch of them every single day like I did in September and October.

We're already looking into the calendar for the upcoming year, possibly their production of Romeo & Juliet in February, so now that I know what the seating is like in this theater, I'll have some idea what to look for when we get tickets...RockinRobyn672 wrote: »@mfowler883 - Lagunitas INPA is the one that tastes like the real thing. The others I've been drinking are from Athletic Brewing Company, which are okay in a crunch. Lagunitas does it right. I found a six-pack at Whole Foods.
Thanks! I'll look for that in stores. At 80 calories, it's not NEARLY as bad as the high gravity quadrupels and barleywines that I tend to gravitate to.
edit - I see they use Citra and Mosaic for that, nice. My last pale ale batch was a partial mash brewed with pale LME, two-row and rye with massive additions of Mosaic. I don't remember what yeast I used offhand, it was a garden variety pale ale strain. I was shooting for cheap, and only added the grains after reading that brews using only LME tend to come up somewhat lacking. I've liked Rye-PAs in the past, so thought it would be a good addition. Once it was in secondary, I added a couple of oak spirals. It came out really good, maybe one of my favorite homebrews so far.globalhiker wrote: »6 Days of AF Christmas done. Battling my normal AF insomnia now. When I stop drinking, I seem to only sleep 5 hours max. At least I got the exercise in. Got my supplements in too. Doing the Vit D, green tea extract (low dose), and DIM to reduce estrogen (mine is over the upper limit). My hair is improving and seems to be growing fast, but then again could be the no-alcohol doing it.
My wine devil is back and today I work late until around 7:30. I have a break at 4 where I can do a market run for wine (so the wine devil in my head is telling me).
I shouldn't be having thoughts like this so early in the morning. Distract, distract, distract.
Cutting alcohol plays even more havoc with your sleep than drinking. The longer you go, the better it gets, if you can get past the hump.
My supplements for now are CLA, L-Carnitine, collagen, MCT, B12, potassium and a daily multivitamin. Workout days get a non-stim pre-workout, and a shake after with glutamine, BCAAs and protein. I've thought about adding a thermo but I hate the way they make me feel almost as much as the way I hate too much caffeine. I was taking some Plexus MetaBurn that I found around the house, I think my wife ordered it some time back and never took it; I don't think it does anything and online reviews seem to agree.
I wish my hair grew faster. I cut it off a few years back and kinda regret it now. At the time, I felt like it was always either in the way, getting windblown and wild or pulled back in a ponytail that was increasingly uncomfortable and didn't really look good. I'm growing it back out and we'll see how that goes...
I think we all have devils and monkeys. Mine usually stays in its place, but every now and then it starts screaming in my ear. It's hard to get it to shut up. At 4, is there something else you need to do instead of the market run?

Hello,
It's me your friendly neighborhood fresh out the Navy alcoholic, promoted to civilian, and stationed in Michigan checking in. Joined in on Dec, 2nd. (Not saying anyone else here is an alcoholic, just light humor directed at myself. I did go to rehab 2 years ago after all lol)
12/2 - Contained alcohol
12/3 - Contained alcohol
12/4 - AF
12/5 - AF
12/6 - Contained alcohol
12/7 - AF (Feel confident I will stick to this since I won't be home from work until 10:30pm)
My weight has also gone down 1.6 lbs since joining in on the 2nd so woot.
As a reminder, I am coming from drinking every evening a week and trying to cut back to 4 days a week, and then further cut back after that seems easy. I've also been trying to be more honest and keep my diary viewable by friends because, well I'm embarrassed and ashamed of how much I drink so that's a motivator even if it's an uncomfortable one.
I feel for you guys with the insomnia. Unless I've had a long work day I usually can't fall asleep for at least 2 hours without at least 2 stiff drinks. I've been taking melatonin to help (and for me it does) but I ran out. If you haven't tried it already I think it's worth a shot.
Besides that stuff, it's the last 2 weeks of the school semester so that's stressful. Looking forward to break, but nervous about alcohol consumption limiting difficulties over the holidays. I'm sure I'm not the only one in that boat though!
Good luck with your goals, and stay safe!9 -
@mfowler883 I don't see anything saying that it might be a rule breaker but I may have missed it since I'm in a hurry and headed to work. Anyway, I do live in a state where that is perfectly legal. My husband partakes regularly, but it's not my thing. My mom uses gummies to sleep while menopause has been increasing her insomnia because melatonin doesn't work for her. To each their own 🙂4

All - Love the list of non-drinking things to do.

@joans1976 It's so good to hear from you and love the good news! Sorry about the tummy tuck (heh, heh!). I love your sense of humor! Keep it up. I strongly believe it helps the healing process.5

@dawnbgethealthy - I like that your body has a cut-off for the number of drinks! Mine is that my nose starts feeling numb and tingly. That's when I know that I've gone a little too far and it's time to stop (if I'm not counting), but yours beats that. My "about-to-throw-up" notification is when my whole face becomes numb and tingly, and by then it's too late.2
-
Yeah looks like they took that one down. I'm also having trouble getting to the forum from the app and the regular link, had to pull this up in my browser history.

Good day to everyone
AF last night so yeah
Still waiting for notification to sigh the building away to 'hopefully' the new owner. DH lets the buyer come in and even lets in his electrician, concrete guy etc. To start the renovation/modifications he needs. I had to remind DH...we haven't signed the final paperwork yet. But I met the buyer today and he is just an anxious to get in as we are to get out.So today I had to go get DH a new phone. His finally gave it up when the volume went out. I thought no big deal. HA. I go to his shop and pick up his phone.
I will tell you that I am not sure I will ever buy a phone directly from the 'verizon' store. I know they thought I was rude and even escorted me out..... yep that was a moment. I am usually very cautious. so......
1. Go to best buy, they have some phones (high high end) in stock but others would have to be ordered. 2. So I drive to the nearest Verizon store. They have the phone but none in stock either. But the store closest to our home at the local mall has them in stock! Great I hope in my car
3. Arrive at verizon at mall. Am greeted with how can we help you? I state what I am looking for and he states back he can' help me right now but the phones I am looking for are in the back corner of the store.
4. Ok go to back of store and look at phones, yep look like what I have been seeing just a tad more pricey...ok.
5. No one around to help so I walk back to the open area in store and someone asks how can I help you. Again I state what I want and he asks for my name puts it in his tablet and walks away
6. Finally Finally someone walks up and asks if my name is nancy, well yes it is. I tell him what I want. He said he thinks it is in stock, checks it is and that will be price + $35.00 for a convenience fee WTF. I said I don't want the fee, and he states everyone has to pay that. I say back ...so I have to pay you and an extra $35.00 for the convenience of buying a phone in your store???? He said yes to that too. I then said that is F** crazy no I will not be buying from this store and will go to Best Buy....at which time he states I don't like your attitude and escorts me out...
If Verizon was not the only company that had coverage to my house I would have canceled my phone service and moved on. Can't wait to move to a more diverse cell phone coverage area
Ok my rant is over....now I have to deal with DH and all the new phone settings he does not like....If I ever wanted a Glass of Something it is now but I will hold off.

@RockinRobyn672 - I found a six-pack of the Lagunitas IPNA down the street. Sampling the first one now...it's not bad. It's missing a bit of the depth and character of a proper IPA, I think, but it's not nearly as disappointing as some of the other NAs I've tried. I'm definitely getting the hops aromas but I think the bite of the alpha acids is missing, the malty body that gives a good beer its mouthfeel is somewhat lacking and it comes up a little short in complexity. To be fair, these strikes would knock an actual IPA off of my shopping list, but this is a non-alcoholic brew and I realize that changes the rules a little....or a lot.
All in all, for 80 calories and no alcohol, it's not bad. I think the jury is still out as to whether I'll buy more.
@lmlmrn you sound a lot like me when I'm confronted with ridiculousness in a retail context. I laid into the staff at Macy's the other night, I was looking for a shirt with French cuffs and there was nobody working the mens' department. I miss the store I used to shop at where there was always a guy hanging out with his tape measure draped around his neck waiting to help you get what you needed. When I got to the counter, they found the shirt I was looking for in the system, and told me I could order it online. I told them if I could order it, what did I need them for? Things aren't what they used to be.
Oh...AF today.

December accountability: 4 days AF
Alcohol: 3 days (7 drinks)
Goal: Limit 2 glasses per day; 12-16 AF days per month. Aim to drink no more than 2 nights in a row.
12/1 - 2 wine @ restaurant
12/2 - 1 bourbon & Diet Coke
12/3 - 4 wine ; overdid it at a wedding
12/4 - AF, DH too
12/5 - AF, DH too
12/6 - AF, DH too
12/7 - AF, DH too
DH & I have been tempted but haven't even opened a bottle of anything in the past few days after Saturday evening's wedding. I was really craving a Torchy's Tini and tacos but cooked at home the last few days and did not even mention going out because if DH is in the mood to not drink I don't want to derail him. Because when he is not opening a bottle of wine each night it is much easier on my resolve to stay AF 3-4 nights per week!
Building up the AF days while I can before the next few weeks of challenges!5 -
Dec 8, Day 8 AF. We went out to eat last night. Husband had 2 beers, I stuck with water. In the tiniest way, not automatically ordering a wine with dinner, is starting to feel normal. I continue to put slips of paper with "what I didn't spend on booze" in my jar. It is starting to fill up. In the past for me, Day 3 and then again at Day 10 AF are the hardest. So I am looking forward to getting past day 10 and continuing through the end of the year, at least.7

Hello all! I’m Amanda, I’m from Michigan. I am a crazy cat lady and work for a veterinarian. This will be my sixth month with this group and it has helped me cut back on my drinking so much! I am not ready to say I am 100% sober but last month I had 30 days alcohol free 😃
12/1: AF
Yesterday was my last day at work before I leave for about 10 days. It was like preparing to leave for 8 months. I caught myself saying “if things go well, maybe I can do A, B and C before I come back.” And then I said “No actually, I need the time off to heal, it will have to wait.” Boundaries. Geez.
12/2: AF
Yesterday was a painful procedure without any pain meds that I handled with only one “son of a _____” blurted out. Today things hurt. Tylenol and ice my *kitten*!
12/3: AF
Got all my holiday shopping done except for food. I’m preparing before this surgery like I won’t be back for awhile. Not sure if my brain is trying to distract me or what.
12/4: AF
Getting ready for another procedure today with no pain control offered. Scared. I found a really cool interactive breast cancer app last night that I think might help be a sounding board for some of my worries. Put up the Christmas tree yesterday. It’s cheerful.
12/5: AF
Surgery in a few hours. I can’t help but be nervous. 🤞🏼 they decide to do a free tummy tuck while there!
12/6: AF
Good news: the surgeon got the tumor with clear margins
Bad news: they forgot to do the tummy tuck!
Today I am resting and figuring out the best pain protocol
12/7: AF
I am recovering at my parents house (until this afternoon, I am going home.) Being around them is very stressful, they argue all the time and drink quite a bit after 4 pm. However, I am a single crazy cat lady so they are what I have and I need to be grateful. I get to shower today!8 -
I’m a little too spaced out to tag everyone individually but I so appreciate everyone’s words of encouragement! Everyone has their own burdens and I appreciate you taking the time to boost me up!
I admire all of you struggling and counting your AF days, especially at this time of year when it is literally everywhere. I know it isn’t easy and I’m glad a list is being made for things to do in place of drinking. And self care! Don’t forget that!6 -

Good morning! I never really did an introduction when I popped on here again. I've been off and on MFP since 2014. You'd think I'd learn to keep the weight off.
Anyways I'm a stay at home mom to many who has had a long on and off again relationship with drinking. I started drinking at the young age of 11 and fell in love with wine. I listened to a podcast recently about alcohol in the brain and I was the prefect recipe for addiction.
It has turned into somthing that I hide from my husband and children because I won't let them see me drink and I don't get drunk. I have developed a high tolerance so I can drink a fair bit with out it being noticeable, plus right now I'm quite overweight. My husband is not much of a drinker. Maybe 1-2 drinks per month. And I'll happily drink daily.
I have found success drinking less for the last 2 years but this summer I was back to my old hiding alcohol ways. Right now I haven't had anything in the house since before Thanksgiving and I'm feeling pretty good and in control. And my wine devil is being pretty quiet
My goals are to not hide alcohol and to only drink at appropriate occasions like dates or holidays.
Total this month
2 days A (bottle of wine split over 2 nights, not hidden)
6 days AF
I love all the suggestions for hiking. I love hiking, I live in the PNW and we hike alot. I'm recovering from my second respiratory infection this fall and it has made things difficult. I signed up for a mud run in September. I'm excited to get in shape for it. I did one in June and it kicked my butt after being seditary and weighing around 212. I'm also really happy that this morning I'm back in Onederland! Weighed in at 199.8

@AmberlyMarlene I'd love you to tell me about your experience in the Navy. My oldest is considering joining the military and it terrifies me to send her. I know very little about women in the armed forces. She is currently in ground school for aviation and wants to be a pilot and/or mechanic.
And great job cutting back. It's hard going down from daily drinking. Been there too, like just last month, ha.6 -

Whoop Whoop, I live in the PNW too! Please let me know what area, we can trade ideas on places to hike.
AF last night, it was a tough but stayed strong. Whiskey devil has really been annoying these past few days.
Not much to tell right now other than I am off to work out....look out power blocks here I come.

This group really helps me hold myself accountable, plus everyone is absolutely great. My monthly goal is 16-19 AF days (3A days max weekly) for weight loss and overall health. I post in the mornings about the previous day.
12/7: Drinks (2) - I had two glasses of wine during DH's birthday meal. MFP has a new intermittent fasting tool, which I found helpful. It helped me skip the urge later at home for that additional drink and the late night snacking.

@mfowler883 Lagunitas has the best NA IPA that I've found so far. I find it satisfying, although I agree with you that it's missing key flavor elements. Let me know if you find one that's better.3

Its my 8th day AF and in the middle of the afternoon I had a sudden craving for champagne! I rarely drink champagne, usually only if it is already poured for me for a toast. I am certain this had to be due to me wanting the sugar I am missing from wine. Anyway I rode the craving, albeit aided by some Christmas M & M's.6

Ooof. Just pushed my self harder than ever before on the treadmill. It's nothing impressive by the standards of somebody who is in shape, but for me, it's really awesome. I'm a little frustrated right now, because I've been stuck at 180 this week and trying to push past it. So upping my 30-second bursts to 60-second bursts and pushing them a little faster than before really taps into that.
I've got fish in the sous vide for tonight's dinner, no idea what I'll serve it with. The only alcohol I have on hand is two small bottles of merlot and I'm saving those, so tonight will probably be AF.

12/8 - AF, DH too; son in law has COVID so my daughter and granddaughter (both tested negative) are now staying with us and the babysitting went out the window since they can’t go to the parties. Babysitting the other granddaughter tomorrow night also changed since they don't want to be exposed so the other grandmother living in Baton Rouge is driving over to do the honors so my son & his wife can go to his company dinner. More testing tomorrow night to verify that it is not spreading!
Another couple asked DH and I out for a wine dinner 12/21... we accepted. So I know that this AF trend will break but maybe it will last a little longer with all that is going on.

12/8: AF - Thursday turned out to be an AF day. I'm on a streak right now. I've worked out daily and I've made it six nights skipping the after-dinner snacks. I had that Lagunitas INPA while cooking dinner and a cranberry La Croix at dinner and I was satisfied. I'm planning 2A days over the weekend. I've lost a couple pounds recently, which is the best I've done in months. This thread and all of you are so helpful and inspiring. The weekend is looming. Weekends are hard.
