Less Alcohol ~ DECEMBER 2022 ~ One Day At A Time

Hello all! I’m Amanda, I’m from Michigan. I am a crazy cat lady and work for a veterinarian. This will be my sixth month with this group and it has helped me cut back on my drinking so much! I am not ready to say I am 100% sober but last month I had 30 days alcohol free 😃
12/1-12/7: 7 out of 7 AF
12/8:AF
The pain is no joke today, yesterday was my first day back at home and I may have done too much. They only give a 2 day supply of narcotic pain meds, otherwise it’s Tylenol and Ibuprofen. I guess it’s Netflix and chill today for me!7 -
@globalhiker How many years ago was it? Did you have to do radiation? Did you do genetic testing? (Feel free to tell me to bug off!)
@SunnyDays930 How are you doing?4 -
@joans1976 - What are you planning to watch on Netflix? What do you like? Are you looking for holiday, suspense, comedy and/or horror movies?2
-
@sunnydays930
We are here to help you get over that 10 day AF struggle you have.
NOTHING is worth taking that cork or screw top out of that bottle. I recall your anxieties from waking up the next day knowing the night /day went badly.
Remember back to those months and months of not a drop of alcohol and how much energy and life you shined.
This is a bump.....only a bump.....JUMP OVER IT. ❤4 -
@Lilylady3k
Much easier for you when DH is also abstaining.
Could this be the new normal?
How are you both feeling physically and emotionally (and mentally) with so many AF days in a row?3 -
@joans1976
Really sorry that you are experiencing so much pain, but glad that you are in your own home. May the healing begin, the bad stuff is cut out of you now.
Netflix and chill....um...lol, is a phrase that I understood means something else.2 -
I am Dawn, I live in SE BC Canada
My primary motivation for drinking less is weight loss.
I throw up if I have more than 3 drinks, so moderation on drink days is rarely an issue for me lol.
My recurring goal is 16-20 AF days per month. I squeaked to 16 last month.
I like to do this diary style to keep track.
Saturday December 03 - 2 drinks
Sunday December 04 - AF
Monday December 05 - AF, planning AF until Friday. Just catching up with forums this morning
Tuesday December 06 - 2 1/2 drinks, 1/2 too many apparently, I thought that I was going to throw up. I am okay with having a drinks day midweek, just not having a stretch of them every single day like I did in September and October.
Wednesday December 07 - AF - Planning AF for tonight. I felt like I needed a "wow" button for some of your posts this morning : - )
Thursday December 08 - AF - Having midweek drinks psychologically made it easier for me to be AF on a Thursday. Not sure yet about having drinks on Friday and or Saturday, lets just say that they are planned drinks days.
Rolling total - 5AF day out of 8 days3 -
So I was not AF last night.
DH suggested lunch/dinner out. This selling of the building is really wearing on both of us, yes it is an excuse but we went to one our favorite watering hole. I had 2 light beers. BUT did I stop there yesterday?
nope. I got my home cocktail smoker and had to try it out with whiskey. Then I smoked air popped popcorn. it was pretty cool. now that I have tried it the urge is gone. however I will continue to eat smoked air pop popcorn hehe
I don't have time for personals today.....but I love all the 'purge the urge' list. for me detailed painting, knitting anything that keeps my hands busy and my brain laser focused on something

Made it to 7 AF days of Christmas and on the 8th day I bought a 10% alcohol champagne that was really great. My wine devil made a deal with me that I would have half and given it is "lower" alcohol, I could get away with it. Nope, whole thing gone in under 3 hours. Wine devil can never be trusted!
On the plus side: except for yesterday, stayed within calories and exercised every day. Not feeling stressed.
@mfowler883 you are right, there are better things to do at 4pm than run out for wine. I have to re-start my old habits of no shopping in the afternoons. I'll save $$ too.
(@joans1976, it was about 4 years go. No radiation. I go to MD Anderson High Risk clinici and they keep a close watch on me. Yes, did all the genetic tests and nothing found. They did calculate my risk factoring in family history and age and it's 60%. High estrogen was the issue. Post-op treatment was Tamoxifen which I could not handle (gave me immediate ringing of the ears and intense headache), alternative was remove ovaries (I said no), I opted to focus on exercise, diet, and all those good things everyone needs to be doing to lower risk. I still need to work on lifestyle and do better. DIM is helping to lower estrogen with no side effects and I am eating less meat and cheese, no fried.) Also, my Vit D and iodine levels were extremely low so I was put on Vit D and iodine supplementation. It's protective.6 -
Beautiful photos family photos ladies!!!
Good and bad news-
Husband landed a job (good)
It is for a high end liquor Co. (bad)
Maybe him being around booze all day will be like working at a bakery, you don't want a donut after being around them all day.
@lmlmrn the smoken possibilities are endless for you. Did you smoke the kernels first, then pop it??
@joans1976 thoughts your way during another recent procedure you had.
Having to pick up husband from work in the evenings is definitely keeping me AF. It might only be 2.5 miles/10 minutes away but the drivers around here SUCK.
Last Friday when I had the BOGO margherita I skirted home the back secondary roads, breaking a rule I always reinforced before moving to Fort Walton Beach. I gotta get the slip up under control.
DECEMBER accountability so far
8 AF (includes today)
1 A (one drink)

@CryingBlue well my recommendation for anyone joining but especially a female would probably be to join the Air Force which sounds like it would work for a hopeful pilot. Navy has pilots too, but air craft carrier life is a lot different than Air Force. I was a supervisor of a joint team to include civilians, air force, marines, army, and Navy. I had some unpleasant experiences as a female in the Navy which were a key contributor of my alcoholism and weight gain. I also found there was an overall more negative mindset towards women in the Navy for silly reasons like pregnancy, and the constant belief you never really earned your position no matter how hard you worked. The mind set was nearly always it was handed to you because of your gender. So yeah. Probably not the most encouraging information, but much less common in the air force! In the air force there's a far healthier morale in general also, not just for females. Army seemed similar to Navy but not quite as harsh, my guess is because it's a much more populous branch. I only knew one female marine while I was in and she seemed to not struggle too much. I would guess being a female marine is difficult but not as much as Navy because there's so much pride in Marines. For any branch I think a female could be successful and happy if they focus on their work and don't get distracted by coworkers in their personal life and can keep their chin up when working conditions are especially tough. Tough working conditions always pass. Unpleasant experiences such as that I endured stay with you. If you can get her to do Air Force I wouldn't worry. If I have kids that want to join the military I would strongly push for Air Force to be their choice.
Congrats on staying tough since Thanksgiving! I too have tried covering up how much I drink, but that's a toll emotionally and psychologically too. Keep pushing, it sounds like you're off to a great restart.5 -

@dawnbgethealthy - We will see how it goes. It is always easier for me when DH stays away from the alcohol too. I asked if he wanted steak or chili tonight and he said he would love a steak but that is a trigger for him to go buy a bottle of red wine. So he asked if I could make the chili so he can keep his streak going a little longer.
Neither of us is sleeping well these days. Either going to bed early and or waking up early and periodically throughout the night. But the waking up is probably from coughing at night when laying down even though I've tried cough meds. Lingering cough.3 -
RockinRobyn672 wrote: »@mfowler883 Lagunitas has the best NA IPA that I've found so far. I find it satisfying, although I agree with you that it's missing key flavor elements. Let me know if you find one that's better.
So the first bottle, I tried in a Spiegelau glass, which would be my usual go-to glass for an IPA, and I had it by itself, not with a meal. I tried another bottle last night, with dinner and in a Duvel tulip instead. The tulip really helped to bring the aromas out as I was drinking, and I found it more enjoyable in the context of drinking it with food.globalhiker wrote: »Made it to 7 AF days of Christmas and on the 8th day I bought a 10% alcohol champagne that was really great. My wine devil made a deal with me that I would have half and given it is "lower" alcohol, I could get away with it. I was buying a ~5%-ish wine for a while, thought similarly that being less alcohol content, I could get away with it. Nope, I found myself drinking absurd amounts of it. I'm not remotely as snobby about wine as I am with beer or coffee, so it really didn't matter that it wasn't a particularly good wine. 10:30 in the morning, walk past my "bar" (the top of a shipping crate that occupies various corners of my studio/office) and be like, hmmmmmmmm daddy needs a glass of wine...

AF today. Got some flooring for the gym, hung up a rack for mats and accessories and rearranged, then squeezed in a workout. Slaughtered my step goal and stairs goal for the day. Surf & turf for dinner, small filets and big shrimp with a ton of veggies to the side and one of those Lagunitas IPNAs. It's growing on me, I think I'll be buying more.

@Joans1976 @MissMay I thank you for your support. @Joans1976 I am hoping for a complete recovery for you. You are brave and inspiring us all.
I am now on Day 10 AF. Yesterday my husband and I sat at a bar and watched a bit of the World Cup. He had a flight then another beer. I stuck with iced tea. It is slowly getting easier. The wine witch definitely calls out to me but I just ask myself, "do I want that drink more than I DON'T want another day 1?" At this point, the answer is no. Kate Bee says when you are tempted and picturing yourself having fun, drinking with your friends and laughing or whatever, she says, play the whole movie. Picture what happens next. How does this movie usually end? For me, I NEVER stop with one or two. If we have been at a bar, we pick up more to take home. Then we watch a show which I don't remember, go to bed, wake up at 2 AM with a racing heart and horrible anxiety. Toss and turn until 6 am, then feel self loathing for half the day. That is how my movie ends. This "picture the end of the movie" has been a powerful motivator for me.9 -

Pain is still here. I wonder if I did too much? I feel like all I did was sit around. I had a friend come visit me, we used to go to the bar together 3 nights a week and get hammered. We talked about all the stupid things we did under the influence and wonder how we made it out unscathed. Neither of us drink anymore. And we both realized last night we are fine with it!8 -
@RockinRobyn672 I am currently watching The Crown. If I just need background noise, which I usually opt for music then, I turn on Seinfeld. I’m also a true crime addict. I will NOT watch that remake of Jeffrey Dahmer’s crimes though, I watched one episode and I think I have PTSD from it. So disturbing.
@dawnbgethealthy Netflix and chill has a different meaning here too if you’re dating someone but I’m not lol so it literally means I’m watching Netflix and chilling.
@Lilylady3k STREAKER!!! I hope the sleeping is getting better!
@SunnyDays930 Wow. Impressive. Sitting at a bar with the person you’re with drinking. And still resisting. 💪🏼Go you! Congrats on Day 10! I love the movie idea. Stay steady.5 -
@globalhiker Thank you for the info. I am lost, lost, lost as to what to do next. I’m considering switching treatment facilities due to lack of care with the current one.8

This group really helps me hold myself accountable, plus everyone is absolutely great. My monthly goal is 16-19 AF days (3A days max weekly) for weight loss and overall health. I post in the mornings about the previous day.
12/9: Drinks (3) - Yesterday was a planned A day. Not planned was the second glass of wine at dinner after I'd already had a beer while cooking dinner. Both the beer (Sierra Nevada Big Little Thing IPA) and the wine (J. Lohr cabernet) were delicious. With my resolve weakened, I had an after-dinner snack (microwave popcorn) but stopped after the one snack. I also had a headache this morning, which strengthens my resolve to stop at two drinks on the A days.
I have one more A day planned this weekend, which is today (Saturday), so will have another day to practice discipline with both food and drink. We're are going to Williamsburg today to check out the holiday festivities. It should be fun!

@SunnyDays930 Thanks for the "picture the end of the movie" tip. I'm going to try that!

@mfowler I've been drinking the Lagunitas NA from the tulip glass because it's my favorite shape for a beer glass.5

@joans1976 LOVE Seinfeld, which is also one of my go-tos for background noise while working, etc. I can almost quote the next line. Curb Your Enthusiasm is great too. I signed up for a Hulu trial so that I could watch the Handmaid's Tale series, which is done AMAZINGLY well. It is also disturbing but well worth the watch IMO. I am still paying for Hulu . I also like true crime but have steered clear of the Dahmer series. There are some great true crime podcasts (Over My Dead Body, Sword and Scale, Snapped, Criminal, Dirty John).5

December accountability: 5 days AF
Alcohol: 4 days (8 drinks)
Goal: Limit 2 glasses per day; 12-16 AF days per month. Aim to drink no more than 2 nights in a row.
12/9 - 1 wine; DH bought 6 bottles (10% discount) of wine so that he could gift one to a neighbor for her birthday … young couple across the street that pick up our packages and watch our house when we are out of town. It was definitely an excuse to buy wine. Plus our daughter is here and drinks red wine. And of course it was Friday. We opened 1 bottle and I had a glass. Instead of opening a 2nd bottle DH asked me to make coffee.
On another note. I slept well ... 10pm to 5:30pm! 7.5 hours. I did not get up at 3am

Wonderful news about DH's job but I agree ... liquor Co would not be my first choice of jobs. You said that you are picking him up in the evenings (I remember he doesn't drive). What is his role that ties him up in the evenings?
I like your bakery comparison!
Are you still considering applying to work at the zoo or one of the gardens nearby?

I'm stuck. I weighed in at 180 and change again today. I think I need to change up the way I'm eating and try to structure my workouts a little better. Most days I wind up just doing whatever I feel like, and I know that isn't the most productive approach. I've been eating mostly good choices but probably need to increase my calorie intake. That's actually going to be a challenge, I've gotten used to really limiting portions and not grazing. I mixed up breakfast today, used actual sausage and added guac for a burrito. I can't help thinking if I increase my intake, I'll gain right away, then begin a slower loss pattern. I need to be okay with that, but it's a little demoralizing after slamming through the first forty pounds.
I expect today to be AF. Going to grab some materials and build a rack for my dumbbells, I think. They're all just sitting on the floor for now.

Good morning to everyone
So I went and bought some of the Lagunitas NIPA it is actually pretty good, that and the Hieniken000 just as well. Thanks to all of you and your experience with NA beers. They do help
@MissMay I actually smoked the popcorn after I air popped it. I just left it in the bowl, put the dome over the bowl and smoked it up for a few minutes. When using for the cocktail/mocktail you smoke the ice cubes then make your mocktail. So now I want to try different flavors, right now all I have is misquote but I would like to try apple and cherry. Maybe even pear? Congrats to DH, how is the art studio going?
So I am trying to make an effort to log in here daily as I use to do. Bare with me about getting to personals
