Hi, Barb, and welcome to the Community!

I get where you're coming from: I joined MFP at age 59, just over the line into class 1 obese, which for me was 50+ pounds overweight. My trigger wasn't appearance - I'd been overweight to obese for decades, and OK with appearance because I'm not very appearance-focused. It was health, for sure. My cholesterol was high, triglycerides through the roof, high blood pressure, joint pain, etc.

I'd even been through stage III (locally advanced) breast cancer, a disease that's more common among overweight/obese women (yikes!). Part way through weight loss, I had a gallbladder condition that can mask gallbladder cancer (adenomyomatosis, not stones or sludge). When they took that gallbladder out, it was an ugly, thickened, cholesterolized thing with actual holes in it. That pretty much sealed the deal, for me.

Once that "I'm doing this" switch flipped in my head, I found calorie counting with MFP to be a great tool for me. It was surprisingly simple (in a practical sense, but of course not psychologically easy every second because change usually isn't, IME . . . but even there, not as hard as I'd anticipated). It was also pretty successful. In a bit less than a year, I was able to reach a healthy weight, and I've now been in the healthy range for around 7 years since.

My cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure are now solidly and consistently normal, some of the better than normal. Joint pain is greatly reduced, just from moving 50-some fewer pounds through the world every second of every day. More unexpectedly, my overall mood and sense of well being are noticeably better, besides. (Don't know why: Maybe because no more systemic inflammation??)

I don't know how to flip the "I'm doing this" switch, TBH. If I did, I'd bottle that and sell it, make millions. ;)

But I'm betting that if you can find it in yourself to commit to that decision, you can make progress with MFP. Wishing you much success!
