LESS Alcohol ~ FEBRUARY 2023 ~ One Day at A Time

@lmlmrn...I grew up next to my fraternal grandparent's farm & loved pumping water for Grandma. They had no indoor plumbing until I was a teenager. When the bathroom was installed Grandma refused to use it....just kept toddling down the yard to "her" outhouse.
AF all this month except for 1 bottle of Chianti early this month.5 -
Day 14 AF....pleased with weight loss in 14 days. Snow, hail and ice seem to be my excuse for not taking my daily walk.

February accountability: 11 days AF

That is funny about the well, theirs was not a pump.....'uncle ory' had to actually drop a bucket down into the well and he would draw two buckets for the day5 -
Yes T Town is Tacoma WA, I live in an area called South Hill which just means on the hill south of Puyallup.....for those of you wondering how one could pronounce this cityPew as in church pew, All like all the people, Up and look up. It is one of many Indian Nations in our area6 -
forestdweller1 wrote: »@Stockholm_Andy ...thanks for the instructions. Computers are not my friends.
I grew up with rotary phones, party lines, and a Brownie box camera.
I'm laughing now, because of how many of you are going to "Google" to research those strange items.
Returning to my previously scheduled old age.
I'll be 50 in a few months but we also had rotary phones and party lines as a kid. You've got me on the box brownies though
The joys of film cameras. The struggle to "finish" the film off once you got back from vacation and taking random pictures. Or the excitement of picking the photo's up only to find all the pictures my mum had taken had all the heads missing!
@lmlmrn we only had an outside toilet in the house I lived in until I was about 9. Nothing quite matches that sinking feeling when going out there to finding it was frozen

I had my last web meeting start at 8:30pm last night and it didn't finish until almost 10pm so staying AF yesterday was quite easy.6 -
Hey everyone, I’m Amanda. I live in Michigan and it is freezing and gray here but at least it’s staying light out past 5 pm now. ☀️
I joined this lovely thread in the summer of 2022 and it has made a huge difference in my life! I’ve gone from being 25% AF to 98% AF.
The people here are kind and real and smart and fun! Welcome to all newcomers!

This week is flying by. I’m still employed. My boss sends me a text everyday asking how I am which is 🤮. I’m actually really tired (expected from the radiation) and sore and stiff. I *might* be carrying a little stress.
19 days AF ✨
2/22: AF
Last night I realized I may be faced with a social situation this weekend where everyone around me is drinking. I may feel pressure to drink. I will keep my “tools” handy and remind myself of the incapacitating hangover AND that I am in active cancer treatment right now and do not need to add alcohol to what my body is going through. But, it will be fun to see friends from college and eat good food and forget about life for awhile.
2/23: AF
So from what I can gather on here, it’s maybe better to make your own mocktail (unless beer) than buy one pre-made? There’s a huge liquor store right by me but I’ve never looked for AF options, I’m going to check it out today.
@RockinRobyn672 Thank you for planting the seed of bringing my own mocktail (am I dense? How long have I been following this thread?) but cranberry is not for me. I’ll find something close!
I have 5 out of 20 doses of radiation done. 25% done! Weird and painful things are happening to the radiated area but this is to be expected, I will spare you the details.8 -

@mfowler883 hugs to Bentley! No wonder you’re emotional exhausted with all you have going on. I hope you can get some real rest and get on the upswing.
I had a glass of wine Wednesday night, even though it was a planned AF night. Hubby cooked linguine and clam sauce, and A glass of wine with dinner was delightful with that particular meal. However, I also also feel bad that I blew off my planned AF
days. I hate this conflicted feeling! At least it was only one glass, which still counts as “less alcohol”. But, between the pasta, bread and wine, my weight is not coming down!!!

And they wonder why we have a LESS ALCOHOL THREAD.
Drink as much as you can within that 6 hours span for $9.99???
Driving or walking would be hazardous. Slapping my forehead on this one.

Hi - Robyn here in SE Virginia. My goal is 16+ AF days per month. I had 18 AF days last month. I'm drinking less for health and weight loss. I post the next morning.
2/23: Drinks (2) - Well, best laid plans …. The brewery last night was out of both their NA and low-cal IPAs, so I reverted to the usual hazy. Also, my planned food choice wasn't available, but I was able to find a healthy option - a tuna poke bowl. On the way home we stopped at a favorite rooftop restaurant where I had a very pricey but delicious Tequila Old Fashioned. The rooftop has a great view of the the beach. Today I plan to "attempt" to Dance Marshall it during a break at work and get in a strength workout. I'm trying to figure out what fun can be found this weekend. I'm still not able to ride a bike outside due to the foot surgery, but I'm expecting that to change in the next couple of weeks.

@MissMay they have these bottomless mimosa brunches at every restaurant popular with the 20-30 yo crowd in my city every saturday and sunday, It is ridiculous and so is the mess & noise afterward. The quality of what is served - both juice and booze and accompanying food is pretty bad. It seems like the way to clear out the fridges at the end of the week. And yet people go ….
RockinRobyn672 I can’t believe you are able to do DanceMarshall with an injured foot! You must be ready for the dance SEAL team …

Yesterday I had a Sierra Nevada Atomic Torpedo IPA with dinner, cut with Karbach Free & Easy NA IPA to stretch it out over the remainder of the evening. The Atomic held up well to being cut, as it's a really bold brew. I didn't drink more or take anything before bed, hoping maybe I'd sleep better, thinking perhaps the things I've been doing to sleep through the night were impacting my sleep.
Nope.
I slept like garbage again.
Bentley had a good night and a better morning. He's been getting funny about eating and taking his meds, but I picked up an assortment of foods yesterday and he ate his dinner well. We got him to take his meds with ham instead of cheese, so yay for that. He went outside and did what needed to be done at a reasonable time before bed, and slept through the night with no crying or yelling. This morning he did both outside without any waiting around or yelling or anything, then came in and ate breakfast and meds with no complaints. Now he's relaxing with no crying or yelling, so I'm feeling less stressed than I have been. I have to go get his meds refilled, and we're going to add CBD to the regimen. I don't know if it will help, but it can't hurt and there are a LOT of people who are convinced that it helps all sorts of things.
He's quite the trooper, he's probably doing better through all of this than we are.
I'm going to try to stay AF today. It might be the first AF day in February, I'm not sure, I haven't kept track.
Thank you, all of you, for being so supportive while I ramble about my dog and all that.
Bottomless mimosas....hmm. I've never been huge on mimosas. The last time we made them, we decided they weren't really getting us there so we, uh, modified the recipe. Yeah. In a rather large glass, we had our champagne, our orange juice, our ice and oh, 3oz of Gzhelka vodka. I think we each had about three of them, but the end of that night is kind of blurry, so....we dubbed them "Screaming Mimosas."
-m6 -
Well, then there's March.
While I've had drinks, I still continue to drink less, so I am happy about that.....
I'm frustrated however on the weight loss or lack there of, as this would be truly motivating for me. When I stopped completely for the alcohol experiment, I lost a few (I was thinking, if this continues, then GREAT) but by the next week, even though still not drinking, my body adjusted. My calories were about the same so I didn't really understand.
Wednesday, I ate and drank a bit more than my limit and the scale went down! My frustration sent me on a quest to find something different to follow. CICO is ok but I'm just counting calories and not looking at my choices for nutrition. I think I new focus with some results (hopefully) will motivate me to see more AF days.

@jthanmyfitnesspal ~ My angles are weight loss and disease prevention. We all know about the empty calories - so I'm trying to reduce my intake to reduce calories. At this time, my health is what I would call decent. Nothing it off the charts crazy and I want to make sure that I'm paying attention to my body so that doesn't happen.

@Womona - I love the Pavlovian response as well.
@joans1975 ~ I hope you have a ton of fun this weekend. You are due for some "goodtimes"! Can't wait to hear about it! Congrats on your progress with radiation! Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!
@stockholm_andy ~ I just had a dream about taking film to be "developed" . It always took me months to get the pictures - So glad those days are over.
@missmay - I've seen those Bottomless Mimosas...maybe it was Vegas??? I just assumed they wouldn't let you stay there for 6 hours straight....but you never know!
@mfowler883 ~ Screaming Mimosas sounds good...but not 6 hours worth!!🙂
Happy Friday everyone!

So even though I had beer at lunch and my nap, I did not have any other alcohol the rest of that day. Today is painting so maybe later today or not.
I have the next 4 days meals planned. I am going to try using my 'induction burner' and make some 1skillet meals. Tonight will be barley beef skillet but I am going to use ground turkey since that is what I have on hand. I have to try and figure out what will and will not work before we hit the road. Eating out every meal for a month is just not an option.
I will have the induction burner and a small crock pot....all suggestions are welcome.
Ok off to go open that paint can...hello laundry room here I come.

@mfowler883 Lagunitas IPNA is still number one on my list but Athletic IPA runs a close second. It's not bad at all. You're right on the Heineken question - mix similar with similar. I may try to make a black & tan (good idea).

@dawnbgethealthy I hope you're feeling better and that it's not COVID.4

@forestdweller1 I am one who knows what party lines are and rotary phones. My grandma told me (just kidding!) I did have to look up the "brownie box camera" (LOL).4

@itladyee I'm also frustrated with my weight for similar reasons. Right now I'm trying to be strict with myself on tracking/planning my intake, which includes lower calorie drinks (boo!). I've stopped weighing daily because I decided I was being obsessive AND I tend to reward myself with extra food after I've had a decent weight loss day.3
-
I remember the brownie camera and rotary phones.
Foto Mart came along and we no longer had to wait so long for photos that might turn out to be crappy.
Photo taking these days is much better, take 10 and 1 turns out great, delete the rest.
We had an outhouse at our cottage. Outhouses are still the norm at most campgrounds.
Loving this throwback : - )
Tested positive for Covid just after posting on MFP forums yesterday morning. That feels like a week ago since I have been down for the count and each time that I wake up to pee and drink water it feels like a whole new day.
Everything hurts and I am exhausted. I really have it in my jaw of all places. I am just moving my heating pad around while in bed to sore places. My sinuses are also very sore, but that could be due to jamming a stick up there for the Covid test?
Taking it easy. It was minus 22c here this morning so I am not sad that I didn't have to go to work this morning.
My eyes are too blurry to read. I unbelievably got in a few dances here and there while up and down yesterday, I thought that moving my blood around might help with recovery. It was weird. I can barely stand up, so how I was able to dance a little I don't really know.

I am Dawn, I live in SE BC Canada
My ongoing goal remains, 16-20 AF days per month.
I had 17AF days for January (a long month)
I do this diary style to keep track, and I post the next morning
Sunday Feb 19 - AF - I may have a couple of drinks after my pedicure on Tuesday eve.
Monday Feb 20 - AF - Having drinks crossed my mind, but I knew that I could wait.
Tuesday Feb 21 - 2 drinks after my pedicure - I was "feeling it" after 1 1/2. It used to be 3. Planned AF for Wednesday and Thursday.
Wednesday Feb 22 - AF - Left work sick. 2 of my friends that I went to the comedy show with on Saturday tested positive for Covid Wednesday morning. I have tested negative so far, but haven't had the energy to test again. I will later today. I had planned AF anyway for Wednesday and Thursday. Hard to eat much less drink alcohol.
Thursday Feb 23 - 1 1/2 drinks. Tested positive for Covid Thursday morning. I think that I got out of bed 10 times throughout the day, each feeling like a new day. Watched a little bit of TV, and the accompanying Alcohol made me feel nice and temporarily soothed. I don't even know what time that was. No hard and fast plans for AF, if I feel like it I will have it. Back to bed...
Rolling total: 13AF days out of 23 days. 50% AF won't cut it to reach my goal in 28 days (reminder to self)4 -
15 days AF! Now tonight Friday I have decided to go to the resort bar where I am at. I like a shot of bourbon neat with a beer back. So I went to my food diary and put in my one shot of Markers Mark 110. Then I put in a 12 oz bottle of Deshutes Black Butte Porter 192! 302 calories total.
So then I put in a light domestic and it came to 110 cal. So I deleted the Black Butte Porter and will have my Markers Mark with a light domestic beer back. I will also include those calories in my allowed number for the day.
Somehow posting ahead what I plan to consume has been a real motivator for me. I post my planned meals early in the morning. Usually before I go to bed there are a couple things I can delete.
So far so good. The scales are being friendly.6 -
@mfowler883 Oh my goodness! I am so happy to hear about B! I love that you call it yelling lol. Is he done with the steroids now? How long has he been off or on them?
@Sherbog Good for you! 15 days! This summer when I was swimming, drinking less and logging and weighing everything I felt great and the scales were friendly too, a great feeling to have, especially when you are working hard. Enjoy your bourbon.
@dawnbgethealthy Lady, you better be drinking enough water!
@MissMay I used to attend a brunch at a friends condo every other Sunday and there were bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys. Oh how young I was. I had been out drinking heavily the Friday and Saturday nights before, then was intoxicated again by noon on Sunday. At the time, everyone was doing it so I didnt realize the problem. I eventually lost touch with some of those friends and the Sunday brunches went away and people got married and had kids (I just got more cats) and my hangovers got worse. Yada, yada, yada I find myself on a Less Alcohol Thread!
@Stockholm_Andy You work too much.6 -
Hey gang. Lookie what I found. Giving it a try at home.

@dawnbgethealthy oh nooo.... very sorry about Covid. What a bummer. -22C. Not jealous.
Apologies for popping in without catching up. When last here, the group was discussing greenhouses. I'm in plant hardiness Zone 8 (no too cold), so some perennials overwinter but many perennials cannot. Like herbs, and I use those year round. I have some in an herb bed that I protect if it's going to freeze hard but most in pots that I put in a portable greenhouse in winter. It works for preventing things from freezing, but stuff can look pretty ragged by spring. Anyway, the greenhouse is 6ftx10ft and about 8ft high, so you can walk into it and work in there. But if folds flat to store on the side of the garage during warmer months. I've had it 25 years! ETA: Kinda like this with a different base: https://www.homedepot.com/p/King-Canopy-10-ft-W-x-10-ft-D-Greenhouse-GH1010/203576742
AF so far this week. Wednesday was National Margarita Day and DH suggested shaking something up, but we both thought better of it. Last weekend I jumped the track Fri but, feeling disappointed in myself, I was content with 1 drink Sat & Sun. DH rsvp'ed a wedding party for tonight and called an audible on it. I feel bad about no showing (so rude!) but I'm going to go with the flow. I do not know any of these people. They are people DH knows from professional circles. So I'm going to search for something in the freezer to eat for dinner and probably open a bottle of wine as we have a couple wine club cases stacked up at this point. The parents of DD#3's roommate who is living with us this semester are coming to town and we're all going to dinner tomorrow. That will be fun and Ima gonna plan on having one with dinner and one at their very stylish hotel bar and switching to club soda thereafter. That's my plan!6 -
So great to read the updates and great ideas for planning ahead and counting A days to stay on track (I prefer this myself).
I am drinking less for Health and Weight Loss. I bundled up and walked for an hour outside today. Only 49 degrees so no excuse.
Good ideas for finding good AF beers from @Sherbog - I’m thinking ahead for summer when I’ll be near the Deschutes River!
@ahoy_m8 - your greenhouse has been good to you for so long! We are building our 9 1/2 x 12 x 9 1/2. DH wants to out in a fan and solar but I think it might be over kill. There are pluses and minuses but we shall find out. I love flowers and herbs and hope to enjoy mine year round - love your tips and sharing the pic too.
@dawnbgethealthy - hope you feel better soon! Hot tea might help soothe those body’s aches.
February Stats/accountability stats:
AF-15

Goals: limit 2 glasses per day
Enjoyed my two Proseco’s last night as planned, and will be AF tonight.
Would love to have 1-2 glasses of Red wine tomorrow night with our Italian meal, But, I still have a slight cold hanging on so may stick with dragon fruit juice & sparking water.
Happy Friday!
