    @39flavours - I agree! I never thought about going to the islands off of Scotland but they are worth it. We ran across a number of people vacationing that drove their car over on the ferries. Here is more info in case you want more info if planning to go.

    We took a wonderful tour in the Orkneys when visiting Kirkwall! It was called "Ancient Treasures of Orkney" for about 4 hours. Many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We saw the Standing Stones of Stenness, Ring of Brogan, village Skara Brae, manor house of Skill House (1620), and drove the coast of Scapa Flow listening to wartime stories interned German naval fleet scuttle itself in Jun 1919. Walking involved soft ground which is uneven in parts at the Ring of Brodgar so depending on the weather make sure you have the right shoes. Even if you do it on your own it is a great agenda but read up so that you have some of the background and history!

    To get you started in the right place ... Head up an alley between the RNLI building and the Queen's Hotel. You'll be on a small street but at the end of it the path turns into a beautiful long walk. We ended at the broch along Breiwick Road. Then reversed and walked through the city as a short cut back to Fort Charlotte.

    Thank you so much for the info, it sounds like a fascinating itinerary and I have screenshotted your post for future reference. I'm missing Scotland, we usually go once a year. Last year we went camping in Mull for a long weekend, which was gorgeous! I want to explore the Outer Hebrides next, the ferries are great for island hopping. We don't have any plans for a visit yet this year but autumn is a particularly lovely time to go as there are so many beautiful colours in the landscape.
    I just checked Google maps, it would take me 22hrs to drive to Oslo, so that's an option too!
