Nope. Doesn't bother me in the least. I see ads everywhere for things I want to consume and things I don't. That's just life.

    And this!!
  • Ad block is your friend.

I can't stand ads either, and this is the best way to go.

I use AdBlock in Chrome, so I don't see any ads at all. The way I like it.
  • This is part of Google's privacy settings. They track what you write, search (including emails) and pass that information along to 3rd parties that will advertise to you. You can change this setting in your google settings. It's how Google makes its money and is "always" right with their searches...

Once again.... I have never searched in google anything...and I mean anything about McDonalds.... the only thing I can think of is we fixed homemade hamburgers and I searched here on MFP the calories... that is the closest I've come to googling that company... I've really never liked this company and therefore why would I search it then...

I think there is more to this that what you all are saying...!!!!!!!!! JUST MY OPINION!!!!!
  • I don't see any ads because i use AdBlock for Chrome and Firefox. It removes the ads from every site. I don't even get ads on youtube.

I've got a Houston car ad and an ad for the university I got my MBA from. I refreshed and got Swanson Health Products and the Westin Siray Bay Resort in Thailand. No fast food ads.

*BTW, I live in Houston, have shopped at Swanson, and recently Googled the tsunami that occurred in Thailand in 2005.

You didn't have to Google McDonalds. When McD purchases Google adwords, it gets to pick its own meta tags. There is no way to know what you searched for or if you have Gmail, what you wrote that McD has in its meta tag list. Maybe it's as simple as telling your spouse in an email, "I was thinking we could grill some burgers for Labor Day" and McD just happened to have grill and burger as meta tags. It doesn't mean you have searched for fast food. Just that you searched or referenced something that McD thought might give it an opening with you to get your attention.

Every once in a while I'll get a relevant ad - like the one for Adidas I got the other day, but most of them seem random to me.

For example, I've never searched for Clorox or any of the stuff in the Spanish language ads I'm always getting. Not sure why I'm getting Spanish ads. I took Spanish back in High School but that was 20 years ago... I can't stand diets and I don't research any of them so not sure why Medifast is up there. I'm not overweight or obese and never have been, so the gastric bypass stuff and the plus sized clothing ads are pointless for me. I haven't been on an airplane in 10 years so Lufthansa should stop wasting their time. Also, somebody thinks I'd make an awesome foster parent to a teenager.

ETA: Anybody know if there's a way to filter your ads - you know, where you could choose the types of ads you'd like to see (targeted marketing) - for me, maybe fitness ads versus junk food ads. They are really wasting their time with most of the ads they throw at me.

If you use Chrome you can get an Addition called AdBlock, which removes all your ads for you, whichever site you go on! :)

    You can, somewhat:

    www.google.com/settings/ads

You can edit your interest categories here, which are determined based on your browsing history on Google properties and websites that use Google ads (like MFP). It's also kind of neat to see what they've determined as things you're interested in.

    http://www.aboutads.info/choices/

This will run a test on your browser to see which companies are running marketing targeted directly to your browser (based on your cookies). You can opt out of any of these companies.

They're trying their best to make sure the ads are as relevant as possible, but a lot of it is automated, and that kind of stuff often fails. They should make it more like Hulu where you pick your favorite out of three ads, or something.
  • I've got the Wall Street Journal, Centura Health (The only hospital in town is Centura-owned), and Integrative Nutrition. Ah, targeted advertising. :)

Major creep factor! I browsed through Barnes and Noble's site the other day and now I see an ad for the last 10 books I looked at.

If anyone wants to beat the system and get to look at undies while on MFP, buy some undergarments online. I've an endless parade of women in their undies now. It's like they know they can't get strikes.

Do you hang out in threads that talk about it? I get ads relevant to the thread topic. I actually got one of the ads in this thread that someone else posted about after hitting quote to his post.
