WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR DECEMBER 2024

Even those of us who don't observe any of the December holidays will find this month stressful with crowded stores, long lines, stressed friends and loved ones, and ads everywhere urging us to spend our money. This is a great time to be part of a supportive community to navigate it all.
Welcome to the supportive group of women who have been by my side for years. The name of the thread is "Women ages 50+" but all women are welcome.
Be sure to bookmark the page so you can find us again.
We like to sign out posts with a name or nickname and a location either specific or general. It helps make it all more personal.
Come back every day and join the conversation. We can make December a peaceful and productive time.

Barbie … Thanks for taking the thread into December!

TG was fine. There were 8 of us. I was a bit worried that Ken & Lynette would begin the “I love you” stuff, but they were surprisingly good. Not a whole lot of leftovers. Gave some to Jess and some to Lynette, gave some to C and N
Deb – sure hope your experience with a tree with new kittens turns out better then ours...lol. I can’t think of a way to make the missing pieces for the tree. Oh well...recyclables go out Monday
Rosemarie – HUG
Happy TG everyone! You all are one of the many things that I’m so grateful for
Margaret – I’m so sorry about your friend
Tracey – unfortunately, the only decorations we will have (except for the sizzle tree) will be outdoors. Right now Vince is totally stumped. If he tells the controller to put on certain lights, they work fine. When he goes to sequence them, it turns on random lights which indicates it’s more of a software problem. Honestly, he’s in his glory trying to figure out the problem.
I picked up the stockings for the cats and almost died at the price. The embroidery of their name costs almost twice as much as the stocking (sometimes way more). But I really didn’t have anyone else to do it. The gal who usually does it for me had her cancer come back and is having diminished kidney failure and balance issues. She’s basically given up all quilting
Vince braved the Black Friday shoppers and went to Lowe’s to get the PVC pipe for the runway for Santa and the Reindeer. I want us to use the runway lights this year since we haven’t used them in quite a long time.
I made a green bean casserole thinking Jess would like it because she always makes it. She said she makes it for others, that she doesn’t like it
M – ROTF “going to die, it was quite relaxing”...ROTF
The landscaper replaced the one azalea bush. He replaced it last year but I didn’t know it so I didn’t water it. This year I know and am watering it. It’s supposed to get really cold (below freezing) so Vince disconnected the hoses. We have to take the water from the house to water the plant. Well, that’s OK
Can’t wait to go to the podiatrist Tues. My heel is hurting a lot and I’m hoping that it’s just that I am unconsciously putting more pressure on my heel when I’m walking so that I put less pressure on the ball of my foot where the “thing” is. I just want to get back to normal walking. I felt so so bad that this time when Jess brought her dog here, I couldn’t take it for walks
She’s going to a PAX show next weekend and might bring the animals here. Not sure. She was going to board the dog but I told her she could bring it here if the people she was going to ask can’t do it. I know Vince isn’t real happy about that, he feels that Ganon really traumatized Fred. But it’s only for the weekend. Her one cat we’ve nicknamed “Crazy Cosmo”, he runs and runs and runs. I suspect her other cat is thinking “phew, I get to rest, he has other playmates so will leave me alone”
They now have this new way of logging in at BK (to start/end work). Sometimes the mgr has to overide because she forgets to put me in as working. No big deal. I mentioned to her “I assume when you’re not here M can do it”. I was shocked when she said “no” but that A could do it. They’re both hourly mgrs. The one mgr (M) is the one ex-from-hades
Margaret – that picture was so very moving. That letter was wonderful, I passed it on to some people, especially my friend in Switzerland’s husband.
Vicki – I’m so sorry about your grandson.
Katie – so sorry about your brother but found the possum story a hoot.
Don’t know if the pie was raw or not...I made another one shortly before dinner. I would have been mortified if the crust was raw so I made another one. If it’s raw, Vince won’t mind eating around it.
Allie – hope the place sells fast, too. Thanks for the smile of the kids
M – the RSV vaccine was the one I couldn’t get because I’m not 75 and I don’t have any of the underlying conditions like COPD. Vince couldn’t get it because he has asthma.
Rori – you sound wonderful!
Terry – your reading was very riveting
Heather – happy birthday to your son!
Pip – that santa and reindeer sitting on a log is so cute
Sue – so glad you got heat back
Holy guacamole! Already the Dec. thread. Thanks barbie

Hi, 53 and starting to log food again, and try to exercise again. (renovating our house has been a nightmare...4 rooms still in different stages, contractors not finishing jobs, and we aren't as ready to DIY as we used to be due to age, injuries, and jobs.
I am trying to get 100g of protein, and stay within 1900 and 2100 calories per day. Struggling to reach that protein level as I don't eat meat daily. Looking for recipes to incorporate more dairy and beans to get there.
Have 25 lbs to lose...maybe an additional 5, if I can. (I was healthy at 145 in college....haven't seen those numbers since. aiming for 160 ish.7 -
Heather - my snowmen didn’t sell, but I sold quite a few ornaments. I’m not complaining about the sale today.
I like crepes better than pancakes.
Annie - I have been in parades before, not nearly as much fun as seeing them.
Terri - I am going to watch your video tomorrow.
Allie - How sad that Tracy has to pack the kids up and leave the house because their father can’t handle it.
Lucky she has you handy.
Kylia - nice to see you pop in.
Beth - I need to sort a couple of other gifts out too and it’s bugging me.
Rita - those are pretty sunrise pics.
Lisa - my Grandmother wrote one of those Grandmother Remembers books for me and I loved it. It got ruined when a box of books a friend was keeping for me when we moved here had her basement flood.
I did a scrapbook for the girls of Rodger’s and my childhoods. I made him write some things in it. He wasn’t happy, but did it.
It will be interesting to see where John and Soraya end up.
We can’t send Christmas cards this year. I’m sorry for it.
Sue - happy to hear you got the heat fixed.
I had a good sale today. This is the one that I seem to do the best at every year I do it.
Lauryn and Michaela came out to help me with it.
Lauryn gave Michaela $40 to spend. She could buy presents and spend a little on herself. So she bought a crocheted koala for Jonah, a bracelet for her little bestie and herself and an ornament for me.
Her mom read what it says to her.
She is so kind.
After the show we went up to the mall for a little bit. Lots of sales, I may go back tomorrow without her. I did manage to buy a wallet for her stocking. It was $4.20. Great deal.
Barbie - thanks for another new month!
Tracey in Edmonton7 -
What we usually do with the crêpes is have the first one rolled around some ham and grated cheese, (it is lunch time!), the second one with squeezed lemon wedges and castor sugar, (the traditional accompaniment), or Nutella for Max, and the third one is ice cream, caramel or chocolate sauce, and sprinkles. The accompaniments are on the table for 'help yourself', which is half the fun, so it all makes a terrific mess. I've bought a red plastic tablecloth, and some fabulous paper napkins with sheep in woolly jumpers and hats.
Bea remembered every detail of last year, so it's something they really enjoy. I always get them to make one pancake each. It's often hilarious. They want John to try tossing the pancakes, a funny tradition. He is hopeless at it.
John has written a revised version of last year's Christmas Quiz, based on Richard Osman's House of Games, that we watch on the TV every weekday at 6 pm. Bea is very excited! He varies some of the questions to suit their ages, and others are more like crazy guesses that no one knows. He is great at these things!
This is all for Christmas Eve, and the parents will take the opportunity to go out for a long bike ride together, weather permitting.
Thank you Barbie for taking us into December! On December 1st I bring my fake red amaryllis out of the garage and put it on the windowsill in the dining room. I retire the autumn chrysanthemums, and put out a winter arrangement which is mainly white. I told John I couldn't be bothered with a tree this year, and actually prefer my twinkly twigs, but he wants a tree, so I told him he could do it. We shall see.
Today I'm making meatballs, which always gives us four meals. 32 balls.
Really must get round to my cards. I need to print out a short round robin, telling the 'once a year' people about my hip replacements etc. This has been such a weird year, with my being out of physical action for most of it. But it has been very rich mentally, with my book making good progress, and lots of mental stimulation. My Spanish is recovering its fluency with the help of Duolingo, and conversations with Bea on the way home from school, and I am delighted to have discovered Barbara Pym as an author. I have just finished her autobiography. Life is surprisingly stimulating for one 'confined to barracks'. YouTube continues to keep me company and my decluttering muscle is growing.
I just need to get moving and rejoin the world.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Barbie: Thank you so much for providing us with this wonderful group.
It’s hard to believe that the year is almost over. I had a good long catch up on Thursday with a friend that I hadn’t talked to in a while, and she said that the days had crawled, but that the months had flown. I thought it very apt.
Tracey: Glad that you had a good sale. 🥰 your gift from Michaela. Such a thoughtful young girl.
Heather: I agree with you about YouTube. Such a useful resource to have.

$50 is huge! That's the most we give anyone. Only rarely throughout my adult life have I gone over that amount. I've never felt that Christmas is a time to go into debt (i.e charging things on credit card) or generally spending much. For me, it's not about the gifts.Hello from Phuket. I've tried to write a proper travelogue but too difficult on my phone. Will fill in more details once I'm home after the 3rd December. Meanwhile, this where I am now. Going to take a long swim soon as I post this.
Google Phi Phi islands for a glimpse of where I went snorkeling. Truly amazing.

I like that tradition.
Cute snowmen!
Crepes - they were one of the things I learned to make in high school cooking class.
Plus I've eaten quite a few of them while in France. I wasn't as fond of the savoury ones.

But I'm going to stop by the "M" store next week and see what they have for "natural" pain relief that I can take at night when my back and/or neck are sore, something other than ibuprofen or muscle relaxers. I haven't been in that store for over 2 years - I'd stop in and buy DH some goodies from time to time. I think things have come a long way as far as medical applications. Right now I have a crick in my neck, it's been there the past few days. Heat and ice seem to help, plus I have PT exercises I've been doing.
Lanette
SW WA State
I'm rarely stiff and sore when I get out of bed.
If that happens, I start thinking about why:
Exercise
- did I do exercise the day before that I don't normally do? Sometimes I'm stiff and sore if I've wielded my mattock for 3 hours the day before.
Sitting
- did I spend more time sitting than usual? I get stiff and sore if I sit in bed (with my legs out in front of me), or sit in a chair for a lengthy period of time. I need to get up and move at least once an hour ... and limit the amount of time I sit.
- If I have to sit, is my sitting and computer setup ergonomically correct? For example, I don't like arms on my office chairs because they force my shoulders up and I need to concentrate on sitting in such a way that my shoulders don't go up. I also need to focus on lowering/dropping my shoulders throughout the day if I find myself hunching.
- Am I sitting upright or am I slouching? I have to make sure I sit upright more often.
- Another thing to think about is the seat in the vehicle you use. One lady I know had terrible back pain for years. Then her company changed her company car, and her back was cured! It was the seat! I've also had to make several adjustments to my seat - raising it higher and making it more upright - to ease some back pain.
Standing
- When I stand, am I standing upright or am I slouching? First thing in the morning, I stand in front of the mirror and then stand as tall as I can, then extend my neck up as long as I can, and drop my shoulders. That seems to unscrunch me. When I stand up at work, I try to do the same thing.
Lying down
- What about the bed? Is it too hard? Too soft? Is the pillow the right height? How old is the mattress? Recently, I realised that my pillow had packed down too much and was a bit too low - this was causing some neck pain. I purchased a memory foam pillow cover with a bit of thickness to it, and the pillow is good again. The neck pain is gone. Recently, I also realised that my 11 year old firm mattress is probably aging and may need replacing but meanwhile, I needed something a little bit softer for my hip and feet. I have that now and it's great to wake up without hip and feet pain.
Stretching
- Do I stretch enough? I've started stretching much more than I used to and the results are amazing! I should have started this years ago.
I'm waking up with less stiffness and soreness than I have in a while.

Memory Books ... Modern Heirloom Books ... Life Books, etc.
The idea of capturing the lives of your parents has been around for a little while. I forwarded an email to that effect to my parents a few years ago. They didn't respond at the time, but a couple years later, my father started writing some of his life experiences.
It's a nice idea. So often a relative passes away, and a little while later we think about them and wonder what various aspects of their lives were like.
To me, it seems like a huge compliment that a child wants to know about their parents.
I wouldn't want to handwrite my answers, but they're easily typed.
These are some websites along those lines ... or, of course, a person could use Word.
https://www.modernheirloombooks.com/new-blog/2020/3/28/50-essential-questions-to-ask-your-parents-to-capture-your-family-history
https://www.lifetales.com/blog/best-questions-to-capture-familys-memories
https://pageandpodium.com/blog/questions-record-family-stories/
Of course, questions like "Take me on an imaginary tour of the house where you grew up. " presume that a parent grew up in one house. Neither of my parents did. Nor did my grandparents. I come from two lines of nomads. It would take them a while to take me on an imaginary tour of the houses where they grew up!! And it would be a book in itself to go through all the houses I've lived in!
So perhaps the collection of questions could be limited to those the child does not know the answers to.

December 1
Today, I was up at 5:30 am so that I could get out to the start of the cycling event I've been organising in time.
It's been a somewhat stressful week getting everything together and organised ... and debating what to do about the weather. Weather in Tasmania is extremely variable and can be extreme. We were having severe weather warnings leading up to the event. I was pouring over several sites watching weather models and predictions and debating whether to go ahead with the event or not.
Late last night, I made the call to go ahead with the event, despite dire predictions, because all the sites finally came to an agreement that it was supposed to start contracting to the south and clearing at about 7 am. It did exactly that and we had a hot sunny day! I've really deepened my tan!
We had 9 riders on an event that usually gets over 20 ... so many afraid of the weather, and possibly regretting their decision when the day turned out absolutely beautiful.
The 9 were a great group who did very well out there given the distance and amount of climbing. They were tired but in good spirits at the end.
Early in the day, I was able to do a 2 km walk in a pretty area while waiting for the riders to come through.
Later in the day, I read a good portion of my Libby book while waiting for the riders to finish. It was really nice sitting outside and enjoying the warmth.
But it's 11 pm now and we're tired.
Now that the cycling event is successfully complete, the rest of December should be fairly relaxed. I quite like December ... summer, celebrations, Christmas music, lots of days off to sleep in, cycle and do whatever I want. It's usually one of my least stressful months.

Good morning beautiful ladies!
Happy December! And Barbie thank you for the new thread!
Sue so glad you have heat again.
Kylia! So good to hear from you! Hugs!
Lanette you might look into a trickle charger for a car that you don't drive often. And I raise my hand as one who is stiff in the morning. I know I need more exercise.
Pip Yogi looks great! And Yay for no drama at Thanksgiving!
Michele you have had such a long time dealing with that foot. Hope you find relief.
Jenferbar Welcome!
Tracey glad you had a good sale! Yay!
Machka sounds like a great cycling event!
Well Dad's asking about a Christmas tree. I feel like I have so many important things on my to do list that I don't have time or energy for that. But the reality is I read a lot. I just don't want to be forced to decorate. Too many things to be picked up and decluttered as it is. I have to work on my grumpy attitude.
Have a great day! May you all be happy, healthy, safe and free!

Happy December 1st3
-
Morning, my dears, so pleased to have made it to December...
Barbie - Thank you so much for your steady presence and ability to keep us going month after month, year after year.
@jenferbar - Welcome! This is a lovely group of women who provide support around all aspects of our lives. Just let us know what name you'd like to be called and about where you are--if you sign your posts that way, we'll soon get to know you, like I sign mine as Lisa in AR. We do tend to avoid politics and religion, which makes this a safe place to be part of each others lives. Losing weight and keeping it off is about our whole lives, not just the scale. Glad you're here, join in wherever you feel comfy, don't forget to bookmark us so you can find us again.
For all of us reading the post from "juliabuyers" above, pretty sure it's a bot or someone selling stuff. Four out of its five posts contained links to apps/sites etc. Varied ones, but pretty sure it's sketchy. Not someone looking for support, for sure. I flagged it, pretty sure Machka flagged it too.
Machka - Glad the ride you organized was a success for the riders who came!
Sue - So glad your heat is back up and running.
Annie - Just glad the troubles are few for you and your dad right now. It's been such a long year for you both.
Pip - Glad Thanksgiving was drama-free. The kids all look great.
Tracey - What a lovely gift from Michaela.
Corey got the gas cast iron stove moved and the log fire going in the fireplace yesterday, and Egg was in heaven. She relaxed in front of the fire for hours. Much better in her opinion! 😽The winter weather has truly set in, but no rain/snow predicted for the near future. Grateful for that.
Stayed pretty relaxed myself, did put together a crochet pillow for myself out of scrap fabric and an old pillow yesterday - not a pillow made using crochet, but one to use when you're crocheting for long periods of time. Supports your elbows and the work. It helps keep my hands from going to sleep, as well. Reasonably pleased with it, but need to do some work on it this morning.
Hope it's a good day for all... the light is just dawning here in the Arkansas River Valley, and it's going to be a good day.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR5 -
Terri enjoyed hearing your reading.
Katie loved the possum story. Glad your brother wasn't severely hurt.
Bought some Christmas mums. I like mums because they last so long and prefer them to poinsettias.

Thank you Barbie for another chance at a fresh start. It is appreciated.
My kittens are fascinated with the laptop and my phone! This is especially true for certain peoples voices, ie my oldest daughter's and Terri's reading! DH and I have the outside lights and blowups going. I am going to try just putting out the tree sans ornaments to see how kittens do. The breakables will not be out this year. They are getting better about not getting on things they aren't suppose to. I was concerned about Thanksgiving with people and food prep, but they were wonderful! I only had to knock them off the counter once each. They slept really well Thursday night!
So quick recap from me.....
September was vacation which was wonderful! The coming back to work sucked, but I finally felt caught up about 3 weeks later. Lots of "home" work. Our garage addition finally got finished. I spent a week helping DH install the floors and hanging signs. Not a lot of me time.
The hurricane coming through caused me some stress as I couldn't reach my sister for 24 hours! She lives just south of Asheville. She was fine though had no power, cell, or internet. She reached out as soon as she got my message when she drove into Clemson to check on the students and facility.
October-Sleep doctor concerned about my continued fatigue especially on the cpap. She did blood work and advised B12 and iron. I have added those and am mentally and physically doing much better. I really was feeling like I was doing nothing right and was worthless. It was a rough month in a lot of ways. DH and I went back to TN to go off roading in a Bronco. It was a package offered when we bought ours. It was scary, exciting, encouraging, and exhilarating all at the same time. I managed to get stuck on the first obstacle! That was humiliating! Our guide was wonderful as was the small group we were with. I apologized and they said no worries. I helped them learn what not to do! I would do it again!
November came and went. I was feeling good most days. Still struggling, but better! My oldest GD has been coming into the shop and helping out on her days off from her other job. I find my training skills lacking as I have to remember to LET her do it so she can learn. Our head mechanic has been dealing with cancer treatments. He has been at work a few days a week up until 3 weeks ago. Our other mechanic has really stepped up his game. I really am unsure of the future of the shop as mechanics are hard to come by. Thanksgiving day was good. My ADD kicked in though. Apparently I really didn't want to host-;) I did lots of stuffs that needed done, but not necessarily at that moment before I finally got to cooking. My youngest daughter again refused to come. I told my oldest that was her sister's decision. I invited. It is my youngest daughter's problem, not mine. I have decided on a few changes for next year in terms of cooking and have made notes.
So I got on the scale this morning....133.2 which is up from end of Sept 127.5 which is up from May 124.1. It is a sign of lack of self care. I admit that it is the mental energy that seems to be lacking. It is so easy to become detached from decision making. Games and internet distractions, DH distractions, work distractions. I can do this! I have a wonderful support system here! I just need to make it a priority. I love how Machka organizes things. It just doesn't work for me as it is too detail oriented. I need to learn to use my calendars better for organizing and figuring out how to care for myself. I want to learn some new stuffs, take time for things I enjoy, declutter (I did clear out some stuffs I haven't worn in a few years and donated) my house, and get better mentally and physically. Friday was a bad day mentally. I knew it when I woke up. This was exacerbated when I got to work and SIL had "helped" me with some of my work. Did she do it correctly? It had to do with totaling invoices. I am not even checking them. They are what they are and it is their business. Apparently, DH decided I needed another trip. I am not complaining. We are heading to IN for a weekend to a quaint little town that I enjoy especially at Christmas time. I need to be caught up with work stuffs and stay that way. I come back with too many issues to deal with.
I am sorry this is all over the place. I am blessed in so many ways! I am thankful that I have you all as my support! I am loved by many! Sooo.
For December:
Walk 8K steps a day
Try to get outside for 15 mins a day in spite of the COLD!
Water
Logging
Christmas cards out NLT next weekend
Check in here daily!

Hi everyone, I am so happy to be here on this December 1st. It is cold outside this morning. But at least the sun is shining. December is a hectic month. Getting the Christmas shopping done along with the decorations. Not doing much baking this year though. Trying to cut way back on my sugar and carbs. The older I get. The harder it is to lose weight. I need to eat healthier and get some exercise in some how. Well any way it is nice to be in the group. I hope to get too chat again. By the way. My name is JoAnn from Pennsylvania. Have a wonderful day10

In the book I'm reading that has sort of a Christmas theme, the writer tells the story of someone who loaded an Advent calendar with chocolates except that in several of them, loaded no chocolate and substituted a note that said "Life's not fair."
Barbie
Cool idea! Except that if I don’t open it, DH won’t. Found a doggie Advent Calendar with jerky in it at Sam’s yesterday. It looked like it had 2 of them but when I got home and opened it this morning, it was only one but with BIG pieces of jerky in each door, which I will cut in half for my 2 small dogs. Nighttime snacks for them! I didn’t even put mine up yet! Will do that later today.
By afternoon yesterday, I was coughing and sneezing, then at night, colitis attack. Woke up with a cold/sinus thing this morning. SHEESH! If it’s not one type of medical it is another at this age! Aging is definitely not fun!! Hope to do some decorating today if I feel up to it. At least the Advent Calendar. I did get all our Christmas shopping done this weekend. We both got new shavers, some clothes, and other trinkets. All that’s left is for me to do Christmas Cards and mail them.
It got down into the 20’s last night and of course, a camper came knocking at like 7 am because of frozen pipe. We didn’t answer the door. They did manage to catch the ranger who helped them out with spare parts FROM OUR STASH! He emailed me what he did. Some people simply can’t wait. It is 10:30 am here and already 63 degrees outside! I wonder what they will do when we leave here? LOL nah, nah, nanah na! LOL

Things such as diet, stress, and exposure to chemicals can all affect our epigenetics. So, while we inherit our genes from our parents, how our body reads and uses those genes can be influenced by our life experiences — and sometimes these changes can even be passed on to our children! It’s a way the environment and our lifestyle can interact with our genetic code to influence our health.

Happy December 1st!
Barbie, I always appreciate your monthly welcome at the beginning of the threads. Thank you for getting us going.
Kylia - you've been busy! Thank you for the catch-up. Glad your sis didn't have any damage from the hurricane, bet it was tense waiting to hear from her.
Margaret - those are beautiful Christmas Mums! At first glance, I thought they were peonies. Where are you buying them?
Annie - I drive both cars at least once a week on the freeway at high speed. Blow the carbon out. If the Camry was sitting for months again, I'd put the trickle charger on it. I think the battery just died of old age. But I do need to buy a trickle charger for the mower, thank you for the reminder. DH had a complicated one (to me) hooked up during the times he wasn't using the mower, but Roger told me they make little battery operated ones for mowers and Harbor Freight has them at a good price right now.
I got in the cleanout/declutter mood yesterday evening and attacked my spice selection. Found some ancient spices and herbs I'll never use again, plus duplicates and holes.
Foggy and chilly here this morning, it's finally above freezing. The sun is starting to peek out.
Reminder tomorrow is "check-in" day for those participating. TIA

I also flagged that post. The language was all wrong. Advertisingese.
Meatballs fabulous. I have 24 open freezing, and will bag them tomorrow morning. That way they take up less space than in boxes.
Didn't get round to chopping back my monster basil again for pesto. I just can't understand how it keeps on growing!!!
Had a lovely long chat with L this morning. I've taken to using a stretch band above my knees while I'm talking on the phone. She is an old university friend.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxxx
Nice to see you Kylia. 😀 Sorry things have been stressful.5 -
Deb – sure hope your experience with a tree with new kittens turns out better then ours...lol. I can’t think of a way to make the missing pieces for the tree. Oh well...recyclables go out Monday

who really needs to get to her cards
Do you have any pictures of the tree? Maybe we can figure out a way to fix it- would hate for you to have to just toss it. Sorry there were pieces missing. How hard was it to put together? I looked at it and was clueless.2 -
This is my happy holiday decoration. I hope your decorations bring you as much joy
