Watch out for predators

Most guys that PM you are probably up to no good... 🤗
I'd love a mfp type dating site that was legit, though, with all over 45 year olds who live within 20 minutes away!1 -
@Adventurista Is my profile still showing as private? I just received a friend request. Hmmm? Not sure how that works!1

I just clicked on your username @SurferGirl1982, using the app on my android phone. It popped up a window that shows you basic info and says "this user is private."
It is a good question how you got a friend request ... if you figure it out let us know. Now back to cats 🐱2 -
The ways of MFP are mysterious! Going on many years ago functionality, I don't know that receiving a friend request was regulated by privacy settings.
You don't need to look at or answer the request... I haven't even looked at mine in years!
If you don't even want to know about them, on the web version you can disable the email you get when someone sends the request. And you can also disable the "let my friends find me"

Thanks @chris_in_cal! I used to have mine set to public and it had a button to "Add As Friend" and "Send Message". But, having it set to private, I didn't think those options were available. Go figure!
I agree...back to cats 😺 *LOL*
And, thank you too @PAV8888 for your input.1 -

Someone only need to type in your username to add you. Even with a private profile.0 -

OK...thanks. I'm somewhat new to this and I'm still trying to figure it out. I'm not sure what the point of having friends is?0 -

I did find that under settings. I left the box checked for "if someone sends me a message". But, I only have one friend and we've never communicated besides in discussions.SurferGirl1982 wrote: »@Adventurista Is my profile still showing as private? I just received a friend request. Hmmm? @Heidijjo says...someone only needs to type in your username. Type it in where?
And, I still don't know what the point of having friends is. The only reason I can think of is if you've become close to someone and want to send private messages or if you're close with a group of people and you want to set your food diary settings to "Share with Friends Only" to compare your diets?0 -

Some of us only of us enjoy being able to be accountable and share messages. Whatever your accountability looks like, seeing what others eat, what they’re tracking, if they’re journaling, workout check ins, can be helpful to staying consistent and on track. It’s also nice being able to compare and team up privately vs in a public forum. I also have peloton buddies. We share the days workouts or rides.
It helps me knowing that my tracking might help someone and also keeps me consistent knowing someone is checking on me, like my coach.
But it’s not for everyone.0 -
We pick up our 2 Ragdoll kittens in a couple weeks. Soak in this preciousness
Bonus pic- my 5 year old
Technically cats are predators so not entirely off topic here.8 -

I always try to write "MFP friends" because it feels sad just writing "what is the point of having friends" 😥
MFP stated off 15 years ago wildly social and a decent food tracking diary. They harvested the USDA data for free and made it easy to track.
It was sold a couple of times, probably to try and harvest the 100s of thousands of users' information. Though not too many people stick around. The social part was a very large part but I imagine it did not make money.
MFP squeezed all social out except for this open source/free discussion board and the food tracker. Neither of them require much maintenance.
It's boiled down to these two autopilot tools, very few staff, and just enough ad revenue income to keep the lights on.
Last year "newsfeeds" went away, that was the last great social MFP Friends thing. Now you are correct. Friends are the most important thing in the world, MFP Friends not so much.

@Heidijjo I'm using the web version due to eyesight issues. When I go to "Friends" and "Add Friends", it comes up with a form to add the first and last name, not a username.
I have a bit of an alcohol problem and I'm currently working on quitting. So, I haven't even been logging recently. Although, I really enjoy it. I like planning out my entire day in the morning. That way I can adjust things if my calories or macros are off. I plan to be alcohol free shortly and will resume. I also plan on joining our local gym and starting off slowly. I was always very physically fit. But an early retirement and drinking messed me up. But, you'd be surprised how quickly I can catch up!2 -
@chris_in_cal You're right...I should have said MFP friends. Because real friends are important.
I follow a discussion where I've come to know the members pretty well and they are all really nice. And, I do consider them friends.
I love the food logging on MFP. I always double check the information before I enter a food. I like to track potassium (blood pressure issue) and not all countries list that on the labels (including the US prior to several years ago). I also use the USDA Central to verify entries.
For years, I used a app called FitDay. But, you pretty much had to manually enter your foods. I didn't leave because I had so many foods entered. They eventually shut down and I found MFP. I would have left FitDay much sooner if I'd known about MFP. I think the food logging is excellent.0 -
@ddsb1111 Your kitties are so cute! And, your correct! Cats are predators...so not off topic 😺1

Re private profiles.. and friend requests
@SurferGirl1982 yes, yours is showing as private, so people can not see your details.
People can still send a message or friend request - there is a way to get those buttons for anyone even when the profile is private.
I am not sure... Messages I tested with a non-friend, did NOT go through for me, friend requests came through.
, but a friend who has a private profile has received messages from strangers..
In the end, we can delete unwanted messages and requests, and just not reply.0 -

Well, I’m super impressed with your vulnerability and open admission. So very admirable. I would love to walk with you on
your journey if ever you feel comfortable.
Yes. There are differences between the app and online. So many inconsistencies. I’d have to log in to see how to navigate the username.0 -
@Adventurista Thanks again for checking. On the web version, I don't see any way to send messages or friend requests for people that are private.
But, I'm not concerned about it. I enjoy reading everyone's posts. I mainly just joined for the food and weight logging.0 -
@Heidijjo Thank you!1

they figure that there is a bunch of fat women on here who don't get male attention so hoping to crack that vulnerability. like what i have to say or not. true or not.... that's what they are thinking and that's why they are here.2

SurferGirl1982 wrote: »@AnnPT77 Thanks! I came back to say that I haven't actually received messages from these people. But, I get a lot of friend requests (always from men). I even think the same man keeps coming up with a different user name. And, it usually says they joined MFP just a day or two before.
Did you see my question about why discussions like this are never listed in "Recent Forum Topics"? It seems like it's almost always the same discussions. To me it gets a bit boring. I am using the web version. I have some issues with my eyesight and using my phone is a bit difficult.
But how do you make your profile not come off as a scammer? I'm back on this app after years away and I need new friends but I don't want people thinking I'm a scammer.0 -
@fox1125 Just start following certain discussions that interest you. After you post for a while, the others in the group will get to know you and know that you're real.3
-
@fox1125 I'm personally not interested in having a lot of friends on my friend's list. I consider the people that I interact with in the discussions that I'm involved with as my friends. And I converse with most of them daily.
That's good enough for me!2 -
Huh... so the seemingly nice guy who says he's a doctor with the Red Cross in Gaza is probably a scammer? Ugh. A shame.
He wants me to get the Zangi app... I've said "no" twice now :-P3 -

Seems legit. 🤣🤦🏼♀️😆2 -
Just got a friend request from a handsome male
Profile pic. He joined less than a week ago, zero posts, and has already harvested 63 friends.
Yet, there’s nothing to report other than a 99.999% gut feeling.
My heart breaks for the one or two he is going to sucker, assuming 1-2% reply. Crying shame.2 -
@EveryDayisDay01 utter amusement that your “friend” thinks you are so gorgeous. Your profile pic is a car!
We are fixing to throw some things on Facebook marketplace. Let those scams emails begin!2 -
I love that they immediately want to know what device I use and if I’m single or married.0

@springlering62 I just noticed that. @EveryDayisDay01 profile pic is a car 🙂 Maybe the guy is just into cars and he thought the car was gorgeous *LOL*0

Every time I post an ad, I finished with "cash only, scammers will be verbally abused before being blocked" and it seems to cut down on them!1
