That was a really cold and windy run and I got hailed on too. I think maybe one of the advantages of doing these short runs is that I probably wouldn't have gone out at all if I'd planned 3 - 4 miles.
Thank you for the condolences5 -
We ended up getting almost 3 inches of snow yesterday but it warmed up overnight and turned to rain so now it's pretty mushy out there. Snow is predicted again for this afternoon so I decided to work from home today. I did a kickboxing workout, ran a mile on the treadmill and walked a mile on it afterwards. Even though I was watching a good show on my iPad (Call the Midwife Holiday special), the treadmill was tortious for me!
So sorry for the loss of your mother-in-law @Mari33a. And on her birthday. Glad all the family could be with her.
@daria0919 glad your power stayed on. I think all your prep work was the key! We have a gas fireplace and a larger propane tank (larger than we will ever need) as back up heat in case the electricity goes out. Unfortunately, the fan on the fireplace won't work without electricity but it does a pretty good job nonetheless. We also have a generator but the way my husband has it set up is a mystery to me (don't get me started on that ) so he has to be here to get it going. It's not big enough to power the entire house but we can charge up the refrigerator, freezers and run the well pump long enough to get water for showers.
(Note to self, do not plan a visit to London in January... My current boss lived in London for 11 years before moving to California and now...Tennessee)5 -
Trust everyone is staying safe with the icy and snowy storms.
We have something called Chinooks here (aka Fohne winds). Last week was averaging -15c daytime and this week, thanks to the Chinook, we might get up to +10c on Wednesday! Nice weather break but its skating rink time when the slush freezes overnight. Lots of people get a migraine when a Chinook happens but fortunately I don't.
I think I'm overdoing the runs. I felt sleepy during a run, for the whole thing. Loosing motivation plus all my bio-chemical shenanigans acting up. I'm permanently anemic amongst things. So I decided to take a break. Did nothing for runs on sunday. Used to push through stuff like this but I'm not getting any younger so have to adapt.
This month is going to suck for mileage as I'll be flying and travelling some going back to my hometown. One flight leg is 16hrs and 40mins crazy laps on a plane is coming. Home is going to be hot hot hot, going from -15c to +35c with 100% humidity. Have to bring extra clothes as I'll be sweating buckets and need to change out each time I go for any walk outdoors... Of course there are plans to do runs and lots of outdoor walking. Free outdoor sauna. Might be crispier than bacon on a hot plate.
21k of 150km so far.
@Scott6255 lol, once I was in Miami during Christmas, I was walking around in a tee and shorts, and the locals were all bundled up in puffy jackets.

@Mari33a sorry to hear about your Mother in law. RIP1

@Mari33a Sorry for your loss! I am glad you could all be with her!
After the snow yesterday morning it rained all afternoon and it rained quite a bit on my run this morning (but it was warm rain at least- not icy rain). I was pretty unmotivated for my run. It was so grey and dreary and unpleasant out with the rain and strong winds. I still ran 10.2km. Hopefully tomorrow will be more pleasant. I need to start getting long runs in now that the kids are back in school again and that is my tentative plan for tomorrow.
47.8/280km.4 -
We're still getting "East Winds," that's usually an autumn thing. So it's a dry head.
6 -
I've run three times this month.
1.97M at 17"20
1.63M at 19"01
2.24M at 16"46
A very big change, after evangelizing Garmin for the last 15 years, as a holiday gift I got a Pixel Watch 3.
For this new "3" version, they deeply invested in running and running metrics. I've been using it about a week now and am taking my time to try and figure out how it works and play around with all of the new features. Generally I want a smaller dodad on my wrist. This watch has two sizes and I bought their larger version. It feels enormous I hope to get used to it. I'm a dedicated podcast listener and with this new watch, if it works out, I can cancel my monthly Spotify Premium bill (always nice.)
@Mari33a - Thinking of you and your family during this tough time. I'm sorry for your loss.7 -
Glad you still had power this morning @daria0919 . I hope you still do.
@Mari33a Great job with the short runs. You're doing great. I've never run in the hail. It doesn't sound fun at all.
@Teresa502 I'm glad you had the option to work from home. My guess is that it is going to really slick in the morning, if all of that slush freezes overnight. Great workout.
Great job listening to your body and adapting @WarmJellyfish . Where is your hometown? That sounds like pretty miserable conditions. Enjoy. If you do crazy laps on the plane, we need a video.
Great rainy run @Laurz9191 .
I would love those temps right about now @chris_in_cal . So jealous. You're doing great getting back into running. I hope you like your new watch.

I did my treadmill run after work and taking care of the animals. Boy, was that a cold job today! Burrr!
I did a run/walk of 2/2 min at 5.0 -5.3/4.0 (twice at each level) 1/1/1 min at 5.4/6.0 mph. Something like that. Avg pace was 12:52 min/mile. Avg HR was 128 with a max of 154 bpm.
We didn't get any snow or really bad weather here...just some rain and now it's cold and windy. I'll take it over ice any day.4 -
January Goal: 125 miles
1/1: 6.25 miles
1/2: 6.02 miles
1/3: 4.02 miles
1/4: 10.02 miles
1/6: 3.15 miles
29.46/125 miles completed for January
I did not want to go outside this morning. It was 21° F feels like 11°. But I got dressed and went out and ran 3.15 miles. It was pretty tough and I don't know if I could have gone much further. I may just have to run some shorter runs this week. We may get snow on Thursday. My husband is hoping we do, and I am hoping we do not.

@quilteryoyo it's Singapore. Lovely place but stupidly hot most days. I moved to Canada for the free air-conditioning. Do not miss the tropical creepy crawlies. I rather take on a bear....6

Morning all.
Got in 5.0M at >11"30 pace.
Think I may be carrying an injury. Arch on left foot has a shooting pain. Ascis are on 430+... So I have retired them (usually go to 450-475, but will do these earlier than usual. [Also did take these to Costa Rica and used them as walking shoes on hikes and trails - so maybe they're at that number anyways!])
I do wear orthotic insoles.
I don't know let's see.
New shoes tomorrow. Will continue to run at an easy pace. And keep it around the 3.75M-5M mark.6 -

Oh no @tarun_yadavA . I hope the new shoes make everything all better.

@WarmJellyfish definitely want to see videos of crazy laps on plane 😆
Sorry to hear about your arch pain @tarun_yadavA - hopefully the new shoes will do the trick.
Glad you didn’t end up with bad weather @quilteryoyo!
We ended up with about 2 more inches of snow last night for the last stretch of the storm. Sun is coming out today, high of 37F which should begin a thaw. Lows for next few days will be in the teens and today’s going to be the warmest day of the week. I’m hoping can get to the Y later this afternoon for a treadmill wun assuming I can get out of my uphill driveway and the gravel roads to the main road.

AlphaHowls 'What do you hope to'
Change? I would like to improve my energy levels. I never wake up feeling refreshed or energized. I think this is caused by work stress so definitely some changes to be made there.
Keep? I would like to keep doing my regular exercise routine, Yoga - Run - Bike. I don't think I can fit in any more than I am doing but would like to run faster and longer.
Accomplish? I would love to run a half marathon. I had my mileage up to 4-5 miles before I hurt my foot so will keep working on that. Losing around 15 lbs would help with this too.
What do you hope to I hope to end this year as a much less stressed and anxious person.

quilteryoyo wrote: »Great long run @martaindale . What plan are you using? Would it mess things up to throw in your own race pace runs?
I'm doing a Garmin plan, coach Amy. It's 5 days a week already so I'd either have to ignore her plan for a day or add a 6th. I don't think a 6th day is in the cards. My work schedule has changed so 5 days is about all I can manage.
@mari333a Condolences. I hope your family is doing ok.
@tarun_yadavA Sounds like a good idea to retire the shoes. Like you said, you're probably at the mileage life with all the hiking. Hope that does the trick.3 -
Jan total 26.1/110 miles
YTD: 26.1 miles
1/1: 5.9 miles
1/3: 4.4 miles
1/4: 10.4 miles
1/6: 5.4 miles
Forgot to post this yesterday. We also got the cold front but no snow or ice so far and not nearly as cold as most of you. We will have lows around 30 and highs in the 40's for most of this week, which is cold enough for folks from Houston. The lack of rain is a blessing. Our roads ice so fast as we are a sprawling city of freeways and overpasses, and ice totally shuts us down. Our fragile power grid also seems to do better if it's cold but not cold and wet. I think people don't feel the cold as much if it's dry and the sun is bright during the day.
@WarmJellyfish Your description of puffy coats in Miami when you were in shorts is exactly what happens here as well. Puffy coats come out at the slightest drop in temps. This level of cold is full winter getup for most (gloves, beanie, BIG coat) even if they are just walking from their car into a building. You'd think people were walking miles to work or climbing a mountain the way they are bundled up. I like the cold and don't like to carry around all the clothes so I'm more of a fleecy north face jacket and put my hands in my pockets person unless I'm outside for a while.6 -
01.01 1.5km 12min 7:59/km - storm
02.01 2.0km 16min 8:08/km
07.01 1.4km 12min 8:19/km
4.94km
Starting yet again. I got super sick. If you ever want to figure out what happens when you make a 'shake' with mostly guar gum and flavourings, and probably no protein powder: don't! Super upset tummy and inner tubing. Plus did you know it's possible to bind your whole stomach content into a solid and puke it out? It's seriously odd! So: nope. 1/5 stars for the unique experience. Will not do again.5 -
Hi everyone!
I was hoping for a long run, but at least I got in a run today. I was not feeling it energy-wise so I delayed running to the afternoon. I was still planning on a longish run but then about 4km into my run the sky turned black, the wind picked up, and it started hailing hard in my face. I took that as a sign to turn back . I ran 8.6 km. Here’s to hoping that tomorrow is a bit more pleasant.
56.4/280km for January.4 -
@mari333a sorry for your loss
@daria0919 thanks for sharing your photos, it looks so pretty with the snow
@Laurz9191 that is not great running conditions! Hope your next run will be nicer
I have just started a new 10k training plan with my Garmin, so I don't have much to show this week but I am still running. Next run is tomorrow
4/1 5 km parkrun in 34:54 minutes
6/1 1.4 km benchmark run
6.4 km done, 53.6 to go
23.1 km walk done5 -
@tarun_yadavA Yeah, I'll bet new shoes will help you out since you are already using custom orthotics. Fingers crossed. Or maybe the orthotics are worn out?
@yirara yuck 🤮 no thank you. Hope you feel better.
@Laurz9191 dang that sounds painful! Glad you turned back.
I think the pain behind my knee is actually upper calf tightness (strain)? After a few weeks of dealing with it, I decided to put a heating pad at the top of my calf for a few minutes and it made the pain disappear (for a while). So I am going to take it easier and apply heat regularly to try to get rid of this. So just did a short 3mi TM run today.3 -
Pretty pictures @daria0919 . I love it when the sun comes out with ice on the trees. You have a great yard/property with the lake and creek. My driveway is steep too, so I usually just stay home when we get slick conditions. I'm surprised you were warmer today than us - our high was 31F (-.5C).
Nice run @Mari33a . I hope you can figure out how to reduce your stress levels.
Nice running @martaindale . I'm with you as far as dressing as lightly as possible unless I'm going to be out for an extended period of time.
That sounds awful @yirara . I'm glad you are feeling better.
@Laurz9191 Don't you just hate it when you procrastinate too long and the weather turns bad. I would have cut it short when the hail started too.
Nice running so far @Emilienewme . I hope you like your running plan.
@Scott6255 Glad you were able to figure out what is wrong with your leg and hope heat and taking it easy gets you back to normal soon.

I spent most of the day cleaning house today. I have a plumber scheduled to be here on Thursday to fix a few things I've been putting off and can't do myself. My house was a mess, so I felt I really needed to do some cleaning before he comes. Esp. needed to make sure the bathrooms were clean - where the leaks/issues are. It really looks a lot better. I didn't have the energy to run, so did a walk instead - after taking Esther for a walk.2 -
Grrrr. Lost my post.
Your photos are gorgeous @daria0919.
@yirara, that sounds absolutely awful. I hope you’ve fully recovered.
Take it easy @tarun_yadavA, just be sure it isn’t a stress fracture. If it doesn’t come right with new shoes you might want to get it checked out.
I’m currently sitting in a waterpark in Fiji, watching my daughters go down some ridiculous slides. They are having an absolute whale of a time. I personally couldn’t think of anything worse.
Did five very steamy kilometres this morning. It’s 28° (82f) overcast and very, very still so it was a bit like running in a sauna. Oddly, running here in these temps are not as bad as I expected - perhaps because it’s summer at home and so I’m a little acclimatized to the heat. Whereas when I was running in the islands in the middle of winter there was a huge leap from the temperature at home to the temperature on the island, and I really struggled.
Our friends have a really lovely holiday house here and a fab boat so there’s been a lot of swimming, snorkeling and island hopping. Oh, and a lot of cocktails!
A few pics:1 -
1/1 1.1 miles
1/3 2.0 miles
1/7 1.0 mile
4.1/25 intentional miles for January.
18.7/80 total miles for January.
I’m behind in my miles. I’m still having pain issues in my left foot/ankle. I walked one mile on my walking pad, but the pain told me not to continue.
I had decided not to try to go to the Y today. It turns out when my husband came home from work (he used our pick up truck to get there), he tried to drive the Tesla up our steep driveway and it wouldn’t budge - it was “glued” to the ice in the driveway.
I think I’m home bound again tomorrow. I’ll have to work on that ice tomorrow so that I can get to work Thursday morning.1 -
January Goal: 125 miles
1/1: 6.25 miles
1/2: 6.02 miles
1/3: 4.02 miles
1/4: 10.02 miles
1/6: 3.15 miles
1/7: 3.25 miles
32.68/125 miles completed for January
It was another really cold morning. I ran 3.25 miles, but just didn't have the gumption to go any longer. I may just take a rest day tomorrow. I am tired of the cold. 🥶
