Sometimes I struggle to even even get up after sitting on the floor. My mind still thinks I'm 20 and tries to bounce up but the bod says nope. I've tried epsom salts, hot baths etc doesn't work. I think Advil is my friend on some days. I do have some osteo and gouty arthritis most joints thanks to decades of physical exuberance thanks to martial arts and army fitness craziness.
@quilteryoyo I think my sleepiness and stumbling during runs is related to low blood pressure and low sugar levels. It's funny because I have hypertension and am T2 diabetic so sugar is usually high but have lost a bunch of weight since.
@Mari33a so sorry for your loss
@WarmJellyfish I'm not a big fan of supplements, as so many of them promise you the world, but they don't always deliver. That being said, I DO try different supplements, and when I find ones that work for ME, I keep using them. For my bones, joints, and muscles, I currently take Glucosamine HCl with MSM, turmeric, and a combined magnesium-calcium supplement. I've been taking them for many years, and the pain in my knees have all but gone away, and I rarely get muscle cramps (which I used to get in my sleep).4 -
@SwimBikeRunRepeat thanks for the recommend! Unfortunately I seem to be allergic to the Costco one I took. I need to find a hypoallergenic version.3
-
@WarmJellyfish I too am in the over 60 category, and (knock on wood) I have been fortunate to not have many chronic aches and pains due to age. But I do have seemingly chronic lower leg aches of one type or another due to running. I do take a few supplements including Glucosamine/MSM, fish oil, vitamin E, and Super B Complex. I think they help in general.8

@ContraryMaryMary lovely holiday photos, looks like everyone is having a great time
@tarun_yadavA good that you had less pain running today, new shoes might help
I did my long easy run today, following week 1 of the plan. I started feeling a little pain in my knee after 3 miles, hopefully it is a new shoes situation too. It was dark early but ok with my lights and cold (the road had a few icy spots) What are your thoughts on running gloves?
8/1 6.5 km in 51 minutes. I have been trying to keep my heart rate around 150 and Garmin put this run in the low aerobic category so I was pleased with that
12.9 km done, 47.1 to go6 -
Hi everyone!
@tarun_yadava and @Scott6255 I hope your pains go away quickly!!!
The weather here today was icy and genuinely not easy for running, as the parts I had to run on asphalt were like running on a skating rink . I luckily only had about 1.5 km on really really slick surfaces. The trails offered more grip and for the segments with lots of ice I could opt to run on the shoulders or on grassy parts. I still ran 11.6km. I picked the best route I could think of for the weather.
Tomorrow it is supposed to rain/snow quite a lot all day. I was hoping to do a longer run but I will have to see how it is out there first.
68/280km for January.6 -
Well, I finally got out for my first run of the year… the dark, cold, wet days so far have not exactly been encouraging! On Wednesday mornings I do yoga before work and rush back to log on, so today I was still in my kit at lunchtime: I didn’t allow myself time to think about it so I was outside and on an easy 30min run before I had time to chicken out. I hardly need to add that I really enjoyed it, do I?
Wk1 - 0/3 runs, 0 miles
Wk2 - 1/3 runs, 2.25mi@HR target 1318 -
@ContraryMaryMary Great running. Love all the pictures. It looks like you have a lovely family and that's a fantastic holiday house. Enjoy the rest of your stay.
Sorry you are still having pain in your foot/ankle @daria0919 . Be careful out there on that ice.
Nice cold run @kgirlhart .
I hope changing shoes helps @tarun_yadavA . I was looking forward to some good shoe porn though.
@Mari33a Nice run. I'm glad you finished before the hail storm hit.
@WarmJellyfish Losing weight probably has helped with those issues. Have you been to the doctor since you have dropped the weight? They may want to change your medicine. As for the aches and pains, I am blessed to not have much most days. The heating pad is my friend at night.
Welcome @SwimBikeRunRepeat . This is a great group. I sent you a Strava follow request. I'm Vicky R.
Nice run @Emilienewme . I'm no help when it comes to running gloves. Since I normally run on a treadmill when it's cold out, I don't have any. My hands do freeze though, so on the rare occasions that I run in the cold, I just use regular gloves. I have heard that mittens are better at keeping you warm.
You are braver than I am, running on ice @Laurz9191 .
Nice run @AmunahSki . Glad you enjoyed it.3 -

18.75/80.00 miles
I got up early this morning so I could get in a long run before taking mom to her eye doctor appointment. I ran 4 miles for my open heart surgery-iversary (ascending aortic aneurysm repair, for those who don't know).... 4 years ago today.
I did the run as a run/walk for 3/1 min at 5.0/4.0 mph for the first thirty minutes. Then, I thought about switching to running 2, walking one or two, but, instead did a run/walk for 1/2/1 min at 6.0/5.0/4.0 mph. It's amazing how slow 5.0 mph feels after running at 6.0 mph for a minute. I was pleased with how it felt. Avg pace was 12:23 min/mile. Avg HR was 126 with a max of 153 bpm.6 -

Thanks, @quilteryoyo! I sent a follow-back request! Happy 4th anniversary!2 -
Just followed you on Strava @swimbikerun_repeat.
@WarmJellyfish, I take magnesium, which is great for muscles - I’m not too sure about joints but I find my joint pain is directly related to tight muscles. I also do (try to do) at least 15 minutes of yoga daily. This does help hugely. In the morning, it’ll set you up for the day, at night it helps you fall asleep.5 -

I have some cheap ones I bought on Amazon. They are enough to keep my fingers from freezing until I get the blood pumping. I usually take them off after a couple of miles anyway.

Jan total 30.5/110 miles
YTD: 30.5 miles
1/1: 5.9 miles
1/3: 4.4 miles
1/4: 10.4 miles
1/6: 5.4 miles

Pre-work run in the dark. It was about 30F and crisp. It was enjoyable. I am loving the cold. I know some of my fellow Texans are over it.
I also went to Pilates yesterday. Working on the consistency.6 -

I've never lifted weights before, and I'm trying that out. Pretty fun so far.

I tried adding this group on Strava, but I kept getting error messages. Perhaps I signed-up for too many groups in one day when I set-up my new account, so Strava might have put me on double-secret probation. I'll try again, soon. I also followed/sent friend requests to some of ye on there. I use the same default photo on Strava as I do, here, on MFP. Thanks to those of you who have already added me. 🤗5

I used a thin pair, and after the halfway mark only my left index finger was still frozen, the rest were fine! I think I suffer a very mild form of Reynaud’s syndrome, as my right middle finger will briefly turn white when I’m driving for no apparent reason - and yet I’m the only person I know who keeps a pair of gloves in the car’s glove compartment…7 -
Nice crisp run @martaindale ! Great job on the Pilates.
I hope your foot is better by Monday and you don't have to go to the doctor @tarun_yadavA .
Hahaha @AmunahSki . You probably are one of the few who actually keeps gloves in the glove compartment.

@chris_in_cal My main running goal for the remainder of January is to build my base (walking to running, consistent routine). My distance/time goals are based on the Strava challenges that I have already entered: 365 minutes walking/running, 100K (62.1 miles) in distance. I'll also post my runs here.
P.S.--I'm just up Interstate 5 from you. 🍻3 -
I didn't run yesterday. The weather wasn't bad, just cold, but I was feeling a little under the weather so I decided to take a rest day. I think it is just a bit of a cold. No fever and I tested negative for Covid, so I went to work. I am swamped and luckily I can shut myself in my office and avoid people pretty easily. Today it is snowing. It was sleeting when I got up. I really wasn't planning to run today anyway. I just don't want to take a chance on icy roads. We usually get rain that freezes before it starts snowing. @martaindale I am definitely one of the Texans who is over the cold. But my husband loves it and he is very excited about the snow. I guess it is pretty. Here is the view from my office window.

@ContraryMaryMary thanks!
@martaindale there is something nice when running in those kind of cold temps. Feels like one can go forever
@tarun_yadavA hope your foot gets better soon
@AmunahSki, I have gloves, toque, balaclava, mittens, puffy jacket even winter boots in the car 24/7, around here those are essentials lol
@chris_in_cal weights can be addictive...
Just followed some folks on Strava.

Hi everyone!
I’m glad you got out for a heart surgerversery run @quilteryoyo !
@Emilienewme I often use gloves while running. I have some cheap lightweight gloves that I just keep on until I warm up and they are so small I can stuff them in any pocket. If it would be significantly below freezing I would need warmer ones, but for “just” freezing or slightly above they are great. I wouldn’t want to run with hot hands. The cold bothers me much more to not have a headband or hat on than to not be wearing gloves after a few km.
@chris_in_cal I hope the fires are far enough away from you that you and the winds die down soon!3 -
01.01 1.5km 12min 7:59/km - storm
02.01 2.0km 16min 8:08/km
07.01 1.4km 12min 8:19/km
09.01 3.0km 25min 8:23/km - snow, lots of it!
7.94km
It snowed all day. Temperature is just above freezing, thus it won't last and running involved small stretches of salted roads, deeper snow or mush. Not fun, but it was great to be out.2 -
I was planning on doing half of my run outside and half on the treadmill, but there was icy rain out and I just didn’t want to be so wet and chilled. This weather was worse for me than yesterday’s icy slip and slide. So, I went to the gym intending to run a 10km. At around 10km, I had just finished my audio book and switched to music and thought, why don’t I do another km, an 11k would be nice. Then, I did that km and thought, I am just 5km away from 10 miles (distance runner math). Then, after I got to 10 miles I thought why stop now, I need to get a long run in anyway. It was like treadmill magic. Normally I am so bored and can’t wait to get off, but I guess my body was just so grateful not to have to brave winter for a change . I ran 19.1km.
I think I only did it because it was not really planned and I just went with the flow. It was special run.
87.1/280km for January6 -

1/6: 5.4 miles
1/8: 4.4 miles
1/9: 6.5 miles
Interval workout today. 7 x 3:00. It was cold and a little windy. The first 2 were into a headwind so they felt harder and were a tad slower than target but the last several were spot on once the wind wasn't an issue.
My arms and lats are sore from Pilates. Signs that I'm building those muscles back up.

@kgirlhart That snow is pretty. I'm glad you didn't have CoVID and hope you feel better tomorrow. Not running on icy roads is smart.
Thanks @Laurz9191 . I, too, need to keep my head warm in the cold. I get like an ice cream headache if my temples get too cold.
Great workout @martaindale .
