Type 2 Diabetics

Just before Christmas my bodywork came back and I'm type 2 diabetic. I was looking to find others with it and learn about better meal ideas, tips, or advice!

I was pre-diabetic and removed most of the carbs in my diet, leaving mostly vegetables. Without carbs there is no diabetes, period. I was not going to use medication so I played around with other opinions for a few years, literally, with just ending up being very frustrated, your results may vary. good luck and make this a priority imo.

    your body still needs carbs.
I am a type 2 diabetic. I just focus on protein and fiber in my diet. I don't count carbs or fat. And for the most part it keeps the sugar low too.
for breakfast i eat 1/4 cup of cottage cheese, 1 tbsp chia seeds and 2 eggs. 325 calories carbs 4, protein 28, fiber 4, sugar 4
for lunch i usually do a salad with 1 serving of protein and 1 serving of cheese. lettuce, spinach, cucumber, zucchini, onion and bell pepper with a zero calorie dressing and a side of mixed vegs. It takes a high volume of food to get 350-400 calories carbs 36, protein 38, fiber 12, sugar 13
for supper I usually go for rice, cheese, protein and 2 servings of vegetables. rice is a high glycemic food but if you are sticking to 1 serving it is perfectly acceptable. tonight i added chia seeds to finish out my calorie requirement. 500 calories carbs 33, protein 47, fiber 14, sugar 6 (note protein in this is 1.3 servings so it's a bit higher than normal)
i've only been doing this around 9 days. so i don't think i have control of my blood sugar yet but my numbers are better mornings between 115 - 146 and night 124 - 138

Actually, that's not true, the body needs glucose not carbs, which the body produces in the exact amount the body requires which is around 130g's a day through a process called gluconeogenesis (gluco-neo-genesis) and basic to human physiology and why dietary carbs are not essential. We produce glucose from non-carb sources like amino acids, glycerol which is the backbone to which fat is connected to and lactate. Most people consume carbs including myself but just wanted to point out this fact. We as a species wouldn't have thrived or evolved without it and it's very basic to our survival and to pretty much every animal on the planet. :)

while you can eat whatever you want. what you eat affects how you feel. carbs are good as starting energy. protein for sustained energy. you don't have to eliminate carbs because you have diabetes. they have a function or humans wouldn't be omnivores. you actually NEED fiber to have a healthy digestive system and regulate blood sugar. fiber is carbs.

    BrittnichOle,

Congratulations on your diagnosis. I know, it sounds weird to congratulate someone who just found out they have Type 2 diabetes. It could be worse. Well, I found out in Sept 2024 that I have full-blown uncontrolled diabetes. The next day I found this app. I've been working with it ever since to not just track my food and exercise, but to educate myself.

Through months of research, I have found that I need to watch 4 areas of my nutrition plan in order to achieve my 3 month, 6 month and 1 year goals.
    1. I need to control my intake of carbohydrates and keep carbs in my "safe" zone.
    2. I need to control my Sugars, all sugars. Glucose, fructose, lactose, sucrose, Geez I never new there were so many different types of sugars.
    3. Sodium, because I also have high blood pressure.
    4. Fats, because I also have very high cholesterol.

I changed not only what I ate, but how much I ate, in order to stay within my daily limits. It took a lot of experimenting with not just what I ate, but how I combined foods into meals.

I would suggest this, find a nutritionist or dietician to help you build a nutrition plan.

    Good Luck!

I’ve been a diagnosed diabetic since 2012. I’ve been able to manage so far without meds. I’m trying to get myself back on track at the moment. The best way to manage my numbers has been to keep the weight off. So that’s one of the reasons I use MFP.

After looking at more complicated ways to track my diet and make sure I get certain nutrients in, I’ve decided the plate method is easiest to maintain. A quarter carbs, a quarter lean meat, a half a plate of non-starchy veggies, and a dairy item. I’m careful with my fruit choices. Berries work best with diabetes. If you want a potsto, I find red potatoes work best
  • I was diagnosed January 3, 2025. I’ve been reading every evening about nutrition and tracking my foods every day.

My doctor called me on a Saturday morning and I feel there are so many unknown things not addressed. For example, she didn’t prescribe strips or a glucose machine. Should I be checking my sugars? Should I wait 3 weeks for my in person follow up or call sooner? She did prescribe me Mounjora that I’ve been in for 1 week. My weight has been a rising issue the last 3 years. as a 50 something menopause women the things I used to do to loose weight were not making a difference. I’m happy to get some medical help to get on track with my weight but I’m discouraged it took the reality of Diabetes to get me there.

Christy I’ve heard that from way too many people, that their doctor didn’t do anything but put them on meds. So glad my doctor was different.

Got a prescription for a meter, and he sent me to a diabetic educator nutritionist.

See if your doc can send you to a nutritionist. And you can get a cheap meter at Walmart that most reviews say is a good one. Relion is the brand I think
