Just starting

Hi everyone, I’m a 65 year-old male who has never exercised since high school and had a sedentary lifestyle. I’m hoping I can change my health and turn it around so I can get off the pills. I’m on and reverse my diabetes 2

    Hello, and welcome!

I just wanted to say hi and say that I think you can turn your "hope" into a plan, and succeed with those goals.

I was able to lose weight at 59-60, eliminate high blood pressure and high cholesterol by doing so, needing no pills for those now, currently 69 and maintaining a healthy weight since loss. Others here do that at our age, too. I don't know why I didn't develop diabetes myself - probably should have - but I do see others here bring their A1C back from diabetic range to healthy range by losing weight, getting good nutrition, and becoming more active, too. That maybe sounds like a lot to do, but it can happen one manageable positive step at a time, and add up to surprising success over a period of time.

If you stick with it, making manageable positive changes and forming new habits, I'm confident you can do this, too.

I'm cheering for you to succeed: The quality of life improvements are more than worth the effort it takes!

Diabetes can definitely be managed by food and medicine. I can't say that you will be able to get off medication but you can definitely reduce the amount of medication you need to take. It depends on how strict you are with your diet (what you eat, not losing weight)

By limiting portions you can still eat just about any food. I removed high glycemic foods from my meal plan when I lost weight a few years ago and had to check my blood sugar before going to bed so I wouldn't over medicate. Now I eat high glycemic foods and still check my blood sugar. It's rare that I go low enough to skip part of my medicine but I'm 99.9% green morning and night.

As for exercising. Start slow and build up. Find something you enjoy doing.
