Regarding constipation … about the only time I have had to deal with constipation is when I have been actively and consciously losing weight. Otherwise I'm usually at the other end of scale - maybe not full-on diarrhoea, but definitely at that end of the scale.
I have been diagnosed with slow digestion in the duodenum, also known as delayed gastric emptying or gastroparesis. Idiopathic gastroparesis.
In my case, gastroparesis causes:
regurgitating (spitting up) whole pieces of undigested food - I cannot overeat or I'm going to be bring it up.
significant bloating - I have to wear stretchy clothes because the bloating can cause me to go up a size or two in clothing very quickly.
upper abdominal pain similar to gall bladder pain.
Most of the time gastroparesis causes constipation in most people, but it can also be the underlying cause of diarrhoea, such as in my situation. Especially when combined by a fairly long list of food (cream, milk, nuts, peanuts, red meat, citrus fruit, etc.)
But when I am deliberately cutting back on my food intake fairly significantly I experience constipation - probably because I cut out higher calorie foods like dairy products, nuts, and red meat.
In 2015, I lost 15 kg in the first 15 weeks, and then went on to lose another 11 kg.
During that time, my digestive situation slowed right down to a crawl.
I discovered a few methods of getting things going at least once or twice a week:
I would have pizza with lots of cheese on Saturdays.
I would eat a handful of mixed nuts (no peanuts), drink a tall glass of water, and go for a 5 km walk.
I would eat 2 or 3 mandarin oranges a day.
And in general I would try to drink a lot of water.
Ginger pieces and sometimes the tablets too, chewable vitamin C tablets, and magnesium tablets can also get me going. I have to be very careful with them … very sure that I'm prepared for the results.
Anyway, maybe some of these tips might help with food reduction constipation.

happyyyyy bdayyyyyyyyyyyy Kim!!!!!

Allie - hope you are feeling better. 🤩 Does SMiles still go to daycare?
Ginny - when you said "Happy Hour" I immediately thought of "The Thursday Murder Club" - if you haven't read the series, I'd recommend putting it on your list. Folks getting into trouble in a retirement community. I'm with Michele - what's Happy Hour like there?
Kay - I just put "The Frozen River" on my hold list at the library. Will probably be a month or two wait.
Flea - crossing fingers your kidney numbers are better.
Michele - glad things are working out meal-wise with J & C. How long are they planning to stay with you? Hope the deck project goes well, you've been waiting quite a while.
Kim - Happy Birthday! Hope you are doing well! 🤩
Started shop clean-up yesterday. Something I was going to tackle earlier in the year but never got around to it. Someone spilled chicken feed out there and left a bunch of empty buckets all over the place for starters. 🤨 I'll give DH's old shop vacuum a work-out.
Also, weatherman has changed his tune again - hot weather Sunday and Monday and into Tuesday in my area, we'll be seeing the 90'sF after all. That should get some tomatoes ripening.😁

Hey, guys… just popped in real quick between today's chores… and petting Egg, of course, plus, of course, it's International Cat Day! Yay! 😉🐈🐈⬛😹
So, the blood tests showed what I thought they would, which is that my thyroid numbers are high, which means I'm going more hypothyroid. That combination doesn't make a lot of intuitive sense, but I get it. My thyroid numbers are high because it's working harder to produce the hormone that I need, so the number gets high when I'm not producing enough. Clear as mud. But part of life with a ginky thyroid.
I assume the doc got those numbers yesterday, and I should be getting a call either to schedule an appointment to get a new scrip or just getting an email that a new scrip is on the way. It's a relief to know that it's not all in my head—and it's never a quick change… Just gradually getting more and more tired.
Looking forward to getting back to my usual Energizer bunny self.
Anyway… other than that, I'm just about to tackle the tomatoes, get them roasting, and after that, I got some beautiful ginger for just $3.50 a pound at 10Box that I have to get cut up and in the dehydrator.
A couple of them are budding, and I might just put those out in my containers, see if I can get some ginger going by next year. Don't want to put them in Corey's raised beds, as the rhizomes that you get in the stores grow sideways, so could take over some of his pretty limited space. Plus, they're not cold hardy, so they'll have to live inside for the winter.
That's all the excitement for today…
Corey's only tiny tomato that was ready this morning:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KIM!!!!!! 😍💞🙂
We've had Edie here, painting, playing cricket, and choosing Crocs as a present from us for her birthday. I will have to get her size from her mum.
I miss her already.
Hoping I haven't got a return of the UTI. Drinking loads of water.

Somehow, I missed a couple of days. Oh, well, I wasn't feeling well since Sunday, but much better today. Some kind of virus, I think.
Happy Birthday Kim!
Thoughts for today:
- A wife says to her husband, “There’s something wrong with the car; there’s water in the fuel injectors.”
The husband replies, “That’s ridiculous, you don’t even know what fuel injectors are. Let me go see, where is the car?”
Says the wife, “In the pool.”

All I want in exchange is your husband’s soul, your children’s souls, the souls of your parents, grandparents, and the souls of all your friends and law partners.”
The lawyer ponders this for a moment, then finally asks, “So, what’s the catch?”

Allie - Nobody is as tired as you are without a good reason - I just hope they can find some solutions. I know you're exhausted with all the medical stuff, kid, but keep hanging in. Glad Miles can bring a smile to your day.

RITA ~ I don't always get the jokes you end your posts with every day but today's are great! 😊
Went to the dermatologist today and had around 20 places iced off of my hands and arms! That's because I spent years and years laying in the sun and getting burned. 😓

Happy Friday, or whatever day it is for you, ladies! I have learned a lot through this little mini health deal. I won't call it a crisis, because in the scheme of things it was just a hiccup. Its amazing how our body works to process the foods we take in, how it communicates with us and how we need to listen, and be patient. I have taken a step back in my OCD impeccable logging and my need to make the pretty percentages on the pie charts that our food diary has. My plan this week is to just eat more instinctively, more intuitively. Listen more to what my body is telling me. Realize that my bowel movements will be less, because I am eating less. Plus the fact that I am eating more cleaner so my body is using more of it for fuel, so less waste. Its weird to not log after doing it since May. But along this journey, I must trust myself and the decisions I make. Thanks for all your input regarding my hiccup.💖👍🏼
Today I fixed an omelet with 2 eggs and a handful of defrosted Jimmy Deans breakfast sausage bits, and some cheddar cheese. It took me a whole program to eat it, but it was yummy! We have been watching a Frontier series, where there are 3 families trying to make it in the 1800's. Its an annoying thing, as they are clueless. One Mom making butter, using a butter churn. She was limp handed, I am yelling at the tv, "just grab the handle like you're grabbing a d_ _ _! I know, not very lady like....🙃😂😂. Another Mom decided it was great to drive the price up on purpose during the auction where they were able to buy livestock. Oooh the other family won't talk to them anymore. They saw it as good strategy, but it will bite them in the butt later on! You wait! There is a gay couple, which is fine, you have to be all inclusive nowadays. But they call each other " husband" which is annoying. I refer to my husband using his name, not a audible declaration that he is husband saying "hey husband". I don't know. The one husband is kind of a whiner, " oh so hard to hang laundry". Just hang the laundry! I primarily watch shows like these to pick it a part to be honest.
I think because we have done Renaissance (SCA) camping that we would he fine, if we were on a show like that. As long as I had someone to kill bugs. We camped once for 2 weeks and it got so routine I did not want to go home. There was a creek we went and dunked the boys in daily. Fields to run thru, and because the event was held on this high elevation area, nightly all the campers would go to this overlook and toast the day. We'd bring our goblets, share our wine or whatever and sit and watch the sun go down. It was really great.💖

Rebecca - So glad your hiccup is past - and I'm glad you're taking a break from checking every molecule for a bit. Logging has its place, and is a great training ground for how to balance those macros. I do not in anyway diminish that, but by taking the numbers off it, I've still been able to steady my weight and take an enormous amount of stress out of my life. Including taking off my Fitbit. I don't miss it. Haven't gained any weight without it, either! 😉😂
Talked to my doctor's office - they're going to ooch me up on the levothyroxine, but not much. I appreciate the caution - pushing me into hyperthyroid would not be useful or pleasant. And it also worsens osteoporosis, among many other things. They'll check me again in two months to see if it's corrected the issue. AND did all this without an appointment. The VA is getting so much better about some things.

No public transportation available where I grew up- well, not out where we were. There wasn't even any in the town just Greyhound that you could take from our town to the town two towns away. I rode it once with a friend. I don't remember why we were going to Santa Rosa. That is the only time I have ever ridden on a bus, except for school bus. When I was in high school, we were the first ones off and the last ones off. Just over an hour each way. We lived 10 miles from town but the bus went to the next town first then up to where the high school was. Coming home was just the opposite.
Junior high was in the second town so riding the bus wasn't as long.4 -
Well see the transplant Clinic Wednesday, Mamo on Friday and Shrink on Thursday after service call at dealership bloodwork on Monday.
Busy.glad I rested this week

I agree with Margaret- I eat/drink a LOT of ginger. I keep ginger chews in my zumba bag, keep a bag or two at the house, ginger crystals for tea ,candied ginger and use a lot in my cooking for my stomach plus I love the taste of it. It really helps and does it pretty fast

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly, and I think, (well I hope) that my previous months have given me a solid ground of choosing my foods wisely. We shall see!

Rebecca, so very sorry to hear about the painful cramping. I had awful cramping and diarrhea Wednesday night, the only relief came from sipping tiny sips of ginger ale from a glass full of ice. Glad the IBGard worked for you. Fage: the 32 container of 0% plain is more economical, 0.22/oz vs 0.24 sale/0.32 regular at Freddie’s (6.99/32 oz). Even better when Grocery Outlet has for $5.99. After scooping out my breakfast serving I put a sheet of plastic wrap on the surface before snapping on the top. Keeps well for at least a week. Don’t know if you can freeze it, but might be worth a try to use in smoothies… good luck! … and send my dog home, ok? :}
Allie hope you can get into the clinic and feel better soon!
Debbie I’m with you about line dried jeans and towels, too stiff and scratchy. Love my clothes drier!
Tracey I’ll try uploading a short video to YouTube and posting link here. Whoops, looks like it shows at the bottom of this post.
Mo, alas I have not yet gotten back on the 10 mins of BB&B/PT wagon. Line dancing IS fun and chair yoga is a great substitute for coach Ken’s BB&B class. She even has us doing an aerobic section, working with bands, balls, straps a different prop every time. You are so right that sitting too long makes everything worse, hurt more. Ugh.
Heather, just added “The Shape of Water to my library wish list, thanks for the Inspector Montalbano recommendation. So sorry to hear about John’s daughter’s village. Has she been evacuated? The pictures are distressingly reminiscent of the Paradise fire a few years ago and last year’s Los Angeles widlfires. ((hugs))
Machka yup, silver amalgam in all the molars. Thanks for understanding. I’m going to ask the DDS Monday if we shouldn’t just skip the endodontist and go straight to the oral surgeon for the extraction, saving the $455 endodontist evaluation…
Lisa thankful that Corey made you add the dizziness to the care team email. Sure hope testing points to a quick and easy fix, vertigo is so hard! “so relieved” when friend had to cancel… I resemble that remark! Do you think adjusting the thyroid med will help ease the vertigo?
Lanette I’ve tried making hummus 3 times, once with dried garbanzo beans, once with canned, and once with garbanzo flour. Used blender and bullet. All three were time consuming, messy and a total flop both texture- and taste-wise. Imho, nothing beats Sabra.
Michele, what Tracey, Machka, Barbie, Rebecca and Flea said. ;} Good for them to learn how to shop/feed/cleanup after themselves, AND you really don't need the stress. Please tell me that J and C are sharing the cost of groceries with you and Vince?
Barbie books, heating pad, glasses to charity shop? Bravissima!
Beth “dreading the whole process” just about sums it up!
Margaret, “…l ess leg cramping at night. Less trips to bathroom in middle of night. Better sleep.” And fewer bruises. Bravissima!
Ginny, when our neighbors visited our happy hour started at 3:30, but it lasted way more than an hour. . . ;}
Flea fingers X’d your food choice changes will be reflected in improved kidney numbers.
Carol 20 places iced off? Oww (gentle hugs)
And yes, the very happiest of birthdays to you, dear Kim!
Action for happiness
6-Encouraged newbie at line dance class but what is her name? Thought it was Phyllis but she’s answering to Carol ;}
7-Give time to a project, oops? Will count tomorrow’s fellowship prep and Sunday’s serving…
8-Ditto. Marinated green bean and cucumber salad.
10-Check in with nephew in the morning.OMG room progress – recycled galoshes packing materials, filed all incoming except two notes needing reply. Keyboard still clear!
Later, lighter, lovelies!
Barbara, the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMODAugust focus: 5 minutes just looking and thinking about the OMG room. Really.
2025: Chose NOW: to move more than yesterday (see action plan), fuel better than yesterday (hold that after dinner sweet down to two pieces of dark chocolate max), open heart and mind before mouth7 -
Happy, happy birthday Kim! Hope things are going well.
Things are warm again today after a nice rain and a cool cloudy day. Lanette, we didn't hear anything about funnel clouds in our area.
I went to the Mill Creek YM this week instead of my usual one and did chair yoga followed by water exercise 2 days this week. I was really tired afterwards. I much prefer them on separate days but they cancelled chair yoga for the whole month of August at the Y I usually go to.
Michelle, I hope the dinner situation works itself out for you. We have my grandson coming this month to stay with us for a while until he gets settled. He is a super picky eater and I am wondering how the dinner situation will work out here. He has a job already but don't know what his hours will be.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA
