Shirley's Scribblings - My Fall 5% Challenge Blog

October 19, 2025, This is the end of the first week of my 2025 Fall 5% Challenge on the Rain Dancers team. I weighed in today at 185.6 which is a 0.6 pound loss.

This was my beginning impact statement:

I will be so glad I stayed on track losing at least 1 lb. a week.

I will have a new attitude towards exercise after staying steady at 30 minutes a day.

I will have made freggies a priority in my day.

Eliminate: Being driven by the to-do list of living in an over 100 yr old house.

Eliminate: Not having meals planned and prepared before I take off for a shopping day.

Eliminate: 3 cups of morning regular coffee. My heart can't handle it any more.

Capture: The motivation of a good start here.

Capture: The motivation of great friends, a great family and a great team.

Capture:  Relaxing and enjoying being part of a planned experience.

Maximize: Having my own treadmill. It stays in good shape because it hasn't been used a lot.

Maximize: Having grocery delivery service. Shopping may be good exercise, but it exhausts me. I will use my time to do planned strength training and treadmill.

Maximize: My sister is making needed diet changes. I will get on board with her.

October 26, 2025. This is the end of week two of the Fall 5% Challenge. I weighed in at 183.6. Hooray! Our focus this past week has been on meal planning.

I began this challenge thinking we would follow a Mediterranean diet plan. Midweek my sister wanted to go back to an old plan we used for diabetic meal planning. Okay. Easy enough, but each day brought challenges. Yesterday she slept very late because she had been up late checking blood sugar readings. She got up and said, Do you want to have lunch.

Okay, I had already made the tuna salad for the lunch plan and was starting the layered salad for dinner which needed refrigeration for several hours. So I started putting lunch trays together. She got a call and came back. "I forgot this was the day I was supposed to go to lunch with Angie who's here from Nebraska. She hasn't eaten and said tuna salad was fine. Can you make more?" Okay, no problem.

Then, "She's coming from Columbia City and won't be here till 2 or 2:30. Can you wait?" Okay. I grabbed a piece of toast.

Then, "Could you make blueberry muffins?" Okay. The recipe says 15 minutes prep and 25 minutes baking time. I don't know why it takes me so much longer, but I finished them on time. The muffins were out, and I just finished the tuna salad when Angie arrived.

After meeting her friend and a couple hours good visit, I finished making the layered salad and got it in the frig. I needed to go pick up a med. Our Kroger pharmacy is only 4 miles away, but the bridge to Waynedale is one lane while they build a new one, so the drive is longer. I picked up the med, grabbed a Healthy Choices Chicken lo Mein bowl from the freezer and was home by 6:30, very hungry. Phyllis heated the lo Mein and we split it, with a side of delicious black grapes.

So, I say menu planning helps but be prepared for surprises.
