Addicted to food, really?

Imagine eating until you're nauseous and your stomach physically feels like it's going to burst, and still having the desire to eat more. That's food addiction.
This seems to be a good enough explanation of it. It's not fun to eat so much that it hurts and still feel compelled to eat more. People can believe what they want, but it is 100% not something that people can just stop by gaining more "willpower" or whatever.0 -
Yeah....heroin addicts aren't really addicted either. They just have no freaking willpower...those buggers!
You know, there's a reason that medical and mental health professionals refer to "addiction" in the case of heroin and not in the case of food.
Talk with some more doctors...many Believe in addiction to food.0 -

I counted sixteen hits on that search...I would not say this is a dead horse thread like "can't eat 1200" or "mfp is mean" ..
I have been seeing it mentioned in the threads a lot and wanted to post a topic on it to get some thoughts on the subject...0 -
my cousin is severely obese, but she has serious mental problems..so in her case her overeating is tied to her mental health/depression issues...
Your expert medical opinion?
thirty four years of experience and knowing her yes...as she has been in and out of therapy most of her life..her mom is the same way ..sad situation, really...
I'm sure your love, support, and lack of judgment is wonderful for them.
wow, I make a comment about how here mental health is tied to obesity and you come back with some BS like that? Get a freaking life....
or are you just an ahole troller?
You can call me an a-hole all you want. I just don't think you need to argue your point but publicly calling out family members' mental illness. I would consider that being an a-hole. To each their own. If someone needs a 12 step program to quit drinking, or if someone needs to 12 step program to put quitting eating 10,000 calories a day, so be it. Whether or not you want to call it an addiction is debatable and there are good arguments on both sides of the fence.0 -

Why is it that you ridicule her after YOU stated that you had not seen any other topics of the subject and she did what you obviously didn't do and showed you similar topics?0 -
I don't really know what I think about this subject anymore. I used to consider myself addicted to food. Now I think it's better to say I was an emotional eater. All I know is that I sat on my *kitten* and ate way too much and that I don't do that anymore.0
-
I am probably going to catch some major flack for this one, but oh well what the hell, I am used to it.
Reading through the threads I am reading a lot of "I can't eat carbs because it make me binge on more carbs", or "I can't eat sugary foods, because then I want more sugary foods and can't stop myself" or "I have to eat clean because I have a food addiction..." there are more but I think I have laid out the general thoughts that I have seen on the subject.
So I think back to when I was like 200# and totally out of shape...I was never "addicted to food" I mean I just ate way too much of foods that I liked and did zero exercise. It was not like I eat some pasta, and was like "oh, my god I have to have more pasta" I would just cook a crap ton of it and eat all of it. Now, I still eat pasta, ice cream etc on occasion, I just eat less of it and watch my calories and macros goals or the day. Its not like I make a serving of pasta and immediately want to make five more servings to eat. I have ice cream in the freezer right now, if I have a servicing I do not woof down the whole pint...
I do not think that anyone can be "addicted to food", it just seems like a strange concept to me. I mean if you do not have that food will you have withdrawals? I just think that it is an excuse that people use to tell themselves that they can't eat certain foods, or to just blame their obesity issue on something else, or to cover up an underlying mental health issue. I mean people binge, but to me that seems tied into more of a mental health issue or just bad relationship with food.
So I will toss it out to the MFP crowed..what do you all think ...food addictions yes, no, or total garbage..?????
I'm not going to go into a lot of psychological jargon here.
In a nut shell, yes I truly believe that people can be "food addicts." Food can cause "good" feelings in much the same way drugs and alcohol cause "good" feelings. People often turn to food in the same way they do drugs... to compensate for something else.
Just because you've never experienced a "food addiction" doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Do you believe in drug addiction? Surely, you do. It's a very similar concept.
IDK I do not get a "high" from eating, so I can't really see the connection to drug addiction. When you smoke weed, snort cocaine whatever you get a "high" that you then in turn crave more...
Maybe if I experienced that with food I could relate to what you are saying...
Bingo! And this is the difference between overeating vs. a food "addiction." I get a high from cookies, ice cream, cake, candy - basically anything sweet and the more high fructose corn syrup, the better. I also get heart palpitations from overeating those same foods. But during that brief time it takes me to eat it, I feel wonderful. Nothing else matters during that moment except the food. And then the feeling wears off and I want more. Is that an addiction? I don't know. There's definitely a mental component to it. But that's why I can't have a pint of ice cream in my freezer. I'm currently at a healthy weight and I STILL experience this.0 -
I guess I feel like I have seen this argued so much in threads and maybe your search hit sixteen, but with different words there were a TON.
You came in saying you expected flack...I hate these threads where it is intended to pit people against each other.
and as for tricks, sure....I know plenty.0 -

I expected flack because people on MFP threads tend to blow things out of proportion ...

I did not see it as "pitting people against each other" I simply posed a question that was on my mind and opened it up for discussion. Is that not what this forum is for?0 -
I think you should watch your words and not come on here and attack people for the way they feel.
I absolutely LOVE food, and that was why I weighed over 200lbs before I started. I am also an emotional eater. If I got sad, I'd reach for a snack. Stressed? Eat something else. Mad? Eat something else. It was what made me feel better.
I don't smoke, and I've never touched a cigarette nor plan to, so I guess that was my way of dealing with things.
I ALWAYS had to be eating something if I was bored, etc. I always made my own food and desserts and I was never satisfied with how much I had in the house, I always had to make MORE and I'd wind up eating it.
The first week of my diet I broke down crying because I wanted to go out and eat fast food and I knew I couldn't do it.
Am I that way now? No. Was it hard as HELL to not munch and eat all the time? Yes.
Going to restaurants for a while was complete torture to me. I hated watching all that food fly by me to other people's tables.
I'm healthy now, my BMI is in perfect range, and I no longer feel the need to eat all the time like I did - but it was a HARD road getting there, and I sympathize with people that felt like me.0 -

I have been seeing it mentioned in the threads a lot and wanted to post a topic on it to get some thoughts on the subject...
lol Ok...so did you get any new responses in this thread that were in any of those?
=p
The thing is....these threads ask for thoughts but many times when thoughts going against the grain are posted, people get high and mighty. You seem to have your mind made up on the subject so I guess I'm wondering why you care what anyone else thinks. What ends up happening often is people telling others who truly struggle that they have no self control and will power and many times gets pretty nasty...
Now unless everyone saying there is no such thing as addiction to food has seen a doctor and a psychiatrist FOR food addiction, I'm confused how the answer can be "nope, doesn't exist. No healthcare professional believes it" because that is simply not true. Are there people who throw around the the phrase "food addiction" to cover up their lack of giving a crap? Sure....as well as there are people who cheat and sleep around like rabbits and this and that cuz they are "addicted to sex' or people say they're addicted to the internet or gambling or whatever the vice may be.
. *shrugs* I may be way off and if so I apologize, but that's just how *I* perceived the thread.
Behavioral addictions are very real. If you are lucky enough to not have to deal with one, then count your blessings and move on... Support those that do, not try and prove that they may not...0 -

Maybe it is my interpretation, but calling someone's opinion total garbage does seem to me like you meant to start a fight...but I stated my opinion and I won't argue it any further...i just wanted to explain that it wasn't random on my part.0 -

pffff LOL who did I attack???? posing a question and then asking for opinions on it is attacking? Thats called discussion and debate...good lord you people are sensitive....0 -
I try to err on the side of compassion when it comes to struggles other people have. Alcohol, drugs, shopping, gambling, eating...people who do these things in excess with detrimental effect to their lives are generally unhappy with the situation and I don't think it's my place to call BS on something just because I haven't experienced it.0
