Tattoos...Almost got one this week

  • I have 4. Got my first one about 12 years ago, then got 3 in a year, (oct 6th 2012-oct 5th 2013). I love them and have a few more planned. I would just like to change the shape of my body before I finish decorating it. Also, I did put thought into what I'm planning to get. I don't plan on getting flash art, but also don't think any is stupid that does. Just my .02

Tattoos are nasty looking. Please don't follow the trend, and get one.

Tattoos are not a trend. Yes, some people get them for the sake of fashion, and that's dumb as heck, but tattoos are an ancient and beautiful art form. Perhaps you should keep your negativity to yourself and not insult a lot of people with your narrow-minded view.

Tattoos are not art, they look nasty on skin. Art is what you find in museums.

    Skip it.

You don't put a bumper sticker on a Farrari.

    sweetest. comment. ever!

No? I did, and it's awesome. It's not for everyone and if someone "overlooks" me because I have one...whatever makes them happy. If you don't like tats, don't get one. I totally respect that--just as much as I respect the choice to get one.

hmm from what ive noticed some tats can really augment a nice physique...while others detract from it

something to consider as far as tat placement

Placement was my biggest consideration...it's key

No it's not. Please stop using the word ''art'' so loosely.

Thank you, for this. Centuries of debate on the topic of what defines art, and you've got it down to "art is what you find in museums"

Did you come on this thread to just be confrontational? If you don't like tattoos, that's no big deal - I wouldn't get one either, for my own reasons. But why come on a thread about tattoos if you don't like them?

Oh, oops. You want attention. That I'm now giving to you.

And how come you get to decide what is art and what isn't?

You think the Mona Lisa would be famous if it was first discovered on someone's skin? Or if Mona Lisa had a chest tattoo? I think not.

@eblake This is the 4th thread I've seen that is about tattoos. There is another one just a few pages back, that I held my tongue on. I'm sick of it, and I'm just throwing my two cents.

Exactly! What makes you an expert on art. Even pieces hung in a museum can be questionable as art. Some of it is crap, yet it's still called art. Don't be so close minded.

i love all my ink. while i haven't drawn them myself, the meaning behind them is no less significant.

currently, i have a cover up in progress on my right shoulder. it's an eagle, and the artist doing it is using a very very thick gauge needle to get the authentic american traditional look. and yes, even the cover-up has significance. i'm covering up my first tattoo that i was a little impatient getting. it's a reminder that you can always fix things, no matter how permanent they may seem.

    Don't need. Don't want.
But I'm cool with others getting them.
  • I like em, have em and want more. Everything I have is something a drew myself. Cannot pick something off the wall that someone else already has.

Abstract art to me is something a child could do yet they hang on museum walls. Art is subjective and can be debated all day. If I like something for my home or my body and its pleasing to my eye, nobody else's opinion comes in to play at all. I've walked through many museums and wouldn't take half the stuff if they gave it to me yet it's famous. It's not offensive to me, that's the great thing about us...we get to like all different kinds of things.

you are simple minded...don't like it...dont comment. really simple it is.

I think that if they can fit your lifestyle ( job etc) they shouldnt be a problem if you want them. I know people from Doctors to lawyers and all walks of life in between that have them...some have alot of them. However , i think they should be something you want to live with for the rest of your life when you decide which one you get.

It can definately be a form of art. Just like when you put pictures on your walls or even the jewelry you wear. I have seen some that are beautiful and some that just make a person look hideous but, thats up to them....it is their body to do with what they choose...its not up to me to like it.

My first tattoo was on my upper thigh and it barely hurt. Think of a cat's claw scratching in the same spot over and over. I FELT it, but it wasn't bad. Then a couple of years later, I got a bigger colorful butterfly on the back of my ankle. OMG. My leg was twitching on its own. The artist was soooo good. I don't know HOW all of the lines and whatnot turned out. It's a beautiful tattoo.

I plan to get another one but I haven't come up with exactly what I want yet. The tattoo on my upper thigh has faded quite a bit. It was a simple little dragonfly and I'm thinking of covering that up with something new (and way more meaningful).

For ME, I'd like to have tattoos that are not really "in your face". The upper thigh is a good spot because even shorts can hide it. The tattoo on the back of my left ankle is about 2 inches wide and 1.5 inches high. Having it on the back means it isn't really even visible when you glance at the side of my leg.

I have sixteen hours of ink on me. I've never done flash though - I think about what I want and what it means to me, then I go and talk to the artist. I've found one I like a lot who has done most of my work at this point. We make a consult, I bring her or e-mail her some pictures that are close to what I had in mind, then talk to her about the placement, size, color or not, what's important to me, etc. Then we make an appointment 3-4 weeks later and she'll draw something before then. The day of our appointment we make any changes I want, then get started.

This is my most recent one -

and this is my biggest -

    Beautiful!

I just got my first one on Wednesday, and taking the bandage off the next morning hurt worse than actually getting it done lol

Walked by a local polynesian tattoo shop and stopped inside.... found a really cool tat that I liked

Ive never liked any tattoo before

Thought about it, then realized Im not polynesian so it may look stupid

And one dude it there getting one looked like he was going to die

    So I left

    Discuss your own almost experiences

    FIFY

I almost hooked up with Dennis Rodman in OC at a house party of his on my way out. I was handing out free kisses to anyone on my way out, (frenchers) and he zoomed up headed to his car witnessing the nonsense but by then my friends were already in OMGshe's too drunk lock down mode for my lips so he just got a chuckle off it.....NEXT!

I have a few. Once you get one you'll be hooked.

Make it memorable, personal, unique - not something off the wall!!!!! Tattoo artist are just that - ARTISTS. Use the pictures on the wall/internet to get an idea of what you want, then have the artist design something special for you.

If you don't like what they draw out, go to someone else. My last guy was going to improvise a background, but then got tired so he said to come back another day. Yet it cost the full amount of the tattoo budget to get the incomplete tattoo.

Go off word-of-mouth, awards, or something. If you see someone with a high-quality tattoo, ask who did it. Walking into a random place where the guys have nothing to show for it - you're taking a risk. Unless you want something REALLY simple, then you might as well get it done for less. But if it's prominent or complicated, find an artist with a good reputation.

And don't ever get one while drunk. Unless you planned it out while you were sober.

No tats, but I have one I'd love to get in my mind's eye. Since I have squat for artistic ability I'd have a particular artist design and do it. He lives several states away, but if/when I can get a tattoo I'll make that trip because that stuff is permanent so a crappy job just isn't gonna happen. I say "if/when" because the one barrier to getting a tattoo is my status as a blood donor. A tat would place me on the deferred list for a year. Blood donation is too important to me to stop for a year just for a selfish reason. That would be 3/4 of a gallon that would not be available in the system.

If I ever get a long term deferral for another reason though, it's ON!
