It's like you don't sit next to someone on the bus where there are free benches. Just no. Give people space if you can.

I just don't want anyone to think I would like to chat. If I put space in between, there is no chance some random person will want to chat at the gym. I am there to workout, not talk.

I go to the gym at work, so I have to work with most of the people I see at the gym. Mostly men. Okay - all men. I go to the gym and get a good workout. If I'm on the treadmill, I'm sweaty. I don't want the dude I have to tell his database design sux to saddle-up next to me while trying to maintain an 85% Max HR.

I also know they all creep me when I'm there. I don't care. Enjoy the commando under my running tights and sports bra.

    I'll kick their a$$es.

I built a gym in my home. I won't even get on the Elliptical if there is someone in the house.

I go to the gym to TRAIN not to pick up a date. I got a good woman at home so that category is filled. I go for one reason and that is to improve my physique

so why do you care? Doesn't this contradict your original post?

    Nothing like female paranoia..

Be friendly with a woman or it seems even get next to them on a treadmill and they think you have an ulterior motive !!!

Me , I just wish i had a $ for every time thats not the case and another $ for everytime they ve thought they ve read the signals right and got angry at me when they realise I dont fancy them and am just being friendly.
They get angry?! What in the world happened to being polite :grumble: :noway:

put it this way, i learned a long time ago to recognise the emotionally crippled, insecure and inadequate women who are so uptight the mere use of a running belt at the side of them by a man is enough to trigger resentment, never mind those that cant cope with friendly conversation without recognising it for just that - and it never ceases to amaze me how far up their own butts women can be and there s little wonder they get angry and resentful when rejected if they think the mere presence of or conversation with a male signifies a play for them.

If i chose to run next to a woman its usually to nose at her callories burned distance and time left and marvel at the fact she doesnt look half as fit as i do, but is obviously so as there s no way i'll keep up !!!!

I just have social anxiety. I'm afraid that if someone takes the machine next to me they'll want to talk... they usually do start chatting, and it gets awkward really fast. For most women I know it's because they are insecure about their bodies ... they generally just buy a few machines for the house and skip the gym scene. :P

On the other hand though... I wish I had a dollar for every time I just being nice to a man and he took it the wrong way.

No, I don't get angry. But the way some guys behave when they realize they won't get sex from a woman is pretty disgusting. So, many women are suspicious for good reasons.

Because I want to be in my own world. This isn't my social hour, this is my de-stress time. This is about me and what I need. The rest of the day is about everyone else...

Have to distance themselves? I mean I like to walk on the elliptical next to someone, it makes me feel better having someone near. Like we are a team?

I like to get next to people and ask them if they want to race, or I just start racing them even if they dont know it!

I'd hop on the one next to you, after all it is a race.

I think of the gym the same way I do public transportation. Don't go stand right next to someone if there's another spot open. Also, don't play your music without headphones.

So can you smile at women in the gym without them going all crazy?

I see a lot of regulars at the gym, so if they look at me, I just smile and nod.

I will talk to some of the guys there, but don't typically talk to the women.....unless like I said, they are regulars, and they happen to walk past me.

I personally just like my own space when I'm in the gym, although I don't mind when someone is there cos sometimes we can run in sync ;)

I sympathise with women as men can be jerks, but dont you forget women can be far worse when they exact revenge when they realise much the same and quickly use others to exact their revenge...

    playing devils advocate ...

Are we to assume women need 3 tread mills , one to use and one either side kept free whilst running !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do ask, and they still expect you to "just know"
  • I'm only speaking for myself here but I have very low self esteem so when a man comes close, I panic. I'm scared he's there to make fun of me or that I'm going to do something stupid (i.e. fall off the treadmill). If he strikes conversation, it makes it that much worse for me. Very self conscious.

I've been going to the same gym for almost 4 years. I't's only since a year ago that there's smiling, nodding and saying "hellos" to the regulars. I love the regulars!! The men and women, I've made friends with both!

Only if the gym is crowded will I get on any cardio machine next to someone. I always feel like I'm invading "their" space, men or women. I would LOVE to run next to some of the regulars though, but I never have the courage to hop on next to them. I don't know, it's weird
