20 bottles of water in the fridge? Why, exactly?
  • I used to be very similar, and it wasn't for lack of trying from my parents. When I was a little kid mom would literally force feed vegetables to me but stopped when I started vomiting all over her. Great childhood memories...

For most of my life the only veggies I'd touch were potatoes and corn.

Now I'm 26 and I'm eating a lot more fruits and vegetables but that is mainly because I decided to cut meat out of my diet and had to eat SOMETHING. lol. So I started fighting my way through my aversions and introducing vegetables that I had never been forced to eat while growing up. Greens other than iceburg lettuce (I love baby spinach now), fresh and frozen veggies instead of canned (mom always bought the canned because we were poor), and figuring out ways to eat vegetables that I didn't like (I hated celery with peanut butter but I find I like it with a ranch dressing flavored dip). I still don't like a fair number of vegetables but the important thing is that now there are a variety of veggies that I can eat and my diet is much more diverse now than it has ever been. So I encourage you to try to eat some veggies! I know it can be scary because I've been there but just take it slow and see what you can do.

curry is amazing. feel free to add some extra veggies to it... figure out which ones go good with the curry flavor (carrots, peppers, peas, string beans, onion, spinach, leek, shrooms, whatever)

you don't have to avoid snacks, just start learning which ones are healthy and give you proper nutrients and which ones are wasted, empty calories. count your cals, and eat when you're hungry, even if it means a snack. you don't want to restrict yourself so much you binge or give up :)

breakfast is good.. things like eggs can be just as quick to make as stopping in a shoppe is (like, 5 minutes to make an omelette), but do whatever's sustainable for you. ~*~
  • Because cold water tastes better than water from the tap.
and I drink a lot of water.

    Do you like fruits?

Try fruit smoothies, and throw in a handful of fresh spinach leaves or whatever into each one. As long as you put in more fruit than veggies, you won't taste the veggies in it, and you'll be getting in the nutrients you need. Plus, smoothies are delicious!

My favorite is frozen grapes, strawberries, mango, and pineapple chunks and a fresh banana, then I add in whatever vegetable I want. Buying large amounts of fruit when they're in season and freezing therm in chunks keeps the costs down.

Keep in mind though, that smoothies can really get up there in calories if you're not watching it, which will completely negate the goal of losing weight and getting healthier.
  • Same here mate.

I've been trying quite a bit my mom has never eaten veg either.
Which is why I've never really had any.

When I visit my dad though I've been trying quite a few new foods and I've enjoyed quite a bit I also tried salad and ended up having an allergic reaction but was glad I tried something new.

I enjoy carrots, peppers(but only when they are cut fine) and I enjoy peas.

And yeah curry is nice :P
  • I like bananas and oranges haven't tried much fruit. Hate apples.

You can lose weight without vegies but you can't be properly healthy. Like everyone else is saying, experiment with what you CAN eat. Sneak grated courgette and carrot etc into meat sauces. Eat fruit. If you're not eating something fresh every day you're fueling your body on old fuel.

I dont get why I sound young? lol
    I eat peas also.
    Peppers.

    no spinach or cauliflower

I eat omelettes and scrambled egg

what you eat while you loose weight = no difference
    > weightloss comes down to how much you eat. caloric deficit = weightloss.

what you eat = your health
    > you need to get your vitamins and fibre. you should add a multivitamin, and if you are having issues with constipation, get a fibre supplement.

a lot of vegetables are only good for fibre. a lot of people don't think about nutrient density....

    Exhibit A

    iLirbyLl.jpg

in the fruit world, kiwifruit is king. if you are eating fruit for the nutrients, this shows that some fruits are actually kind of pointless. for example, 50g of apple vs 50g of kiwifruit, kiwifruit has 5 times the nutrients. 50g of kiwifruit = 250g of apple in terms of nutrient density. so eating apples for nutrients, once you have this knowledge is kind of pointless. if you like apples and don't mind eating 5 times the calories, go for it.

however, overall, fruits have a lower nutrient density than vegetables.

    nutrient-density-chart.jpg

so armed with this knowledge, you should definitey get a multivitamin, and if you can, eat a bit more vegetables / fruit.

QFT. Smoothies are a really good way to get your nutrients, and its true, you can put a lot of spinach into a fruit smoothie and you cant taste it.

    I usually have

    2 frozen bananas
    150ml of strawberry yogurt
    frozen berries
    1tbsp of coconut cream

you can add like, anything, but I usually add from time to time

    protein powder
cocoa powder for a chocolate taste
    spinach
    kiwifruit

I used to be the same way, except I didn't have any real allergic reactions to vegetables, I just didn't like them. For vegetables you can tolerate, look up some new recipes. I didn't start liking vegetables until I found new dishes that I loved making and that were healthy. Buy a healthy, low-calorie cookbook or find recipes online. Go food shopping with your mom and try and stay away from pre-packaged foods.

Curry is probably my favorite food.

Buy some of the Medium S&B curry from Waitrose or a japanese supermarket. Makes a great beef curry in about 30mins.
Really nice, really easy to make, I put carrot and potato in mine. Serve up with a little wholegrain rice and you're done.

Personally, no. I have water bottles, fill with ice, fill with water, drink, repeat. Saves money and waste.

Keep trying all the vegetables. Try them raw, try them steamed, try them stir fried, try them roasted, try them with sauces or lemon juice, just keep trying. Your tastes change over time, and you find ways of preparing vegetables that suit your tastes. I well remember being forced to eat asparagus when I was a child, and never being forced again because I did throw up on my mom. I had the same reaction to cooked greens. I eat and enjoy all of these things now, because I learned to add some lemon juice or vinegar at the end of cooking. It will be a lot easier for you to meet your goals if you include veggies in your diet.
Good luck, and good for you for thinking about your health now!
  • Instead of trying to change all of the types of foods you eat. Why not utilize MFP to track your macro nutrients and caloric intake. While my personal "opinion" is that people should eat a variety of foods but mainly they should eat a variety of foods they enjoy. Just track your current caloric intake and macro ratio and then utilize the nice features of MFP to set up a weight loss goal. This person asked for advice on how to reduce her BMI not get lectured on how she needs to change her entire eating habits and continue to eat foods that make her feel sick and do not taste good to her. To me that would be an unhealthy habit and certainly not sustainable. Macro nutrient ratio and caloric intake are pretty much it. Move more eat less ensure adequate protein and fat intake.

Try grating vegies and adding them to your curries/pasta sauces. They pretty much dissolve and you can't taste them but you get the nutrients.

Glad to hear you're giving sweet potato a try. A meal with lean chicken, sweet potato and carrots/peas is fine.
  • Yeah I have 20 or so bottles that I drink and then refill from the tap.
    I don't add ice though.

Thanks for the suggestion joshky9 just a heads up though lol I'm a guy.

But yeah Ive had a look at their calorie counter...
I'm looking to start insanity tomorrow hopefully... If not tomorrow Ill have to start next week as I want to start on a monday to utilize the chart fully.

Lately I have been eating processed foods but I have been trying to cut down on portion sizes a lot...
Before I would eat snacks in between meals such as crisps etc because I get hungry quite quick...

But I've actually stopped drinking fizzy pop and started drinking water and I feel fuller a lot quicker.

Because I'm a student I'm out most of the day and I tend to eat out at subway for lunch... But I'm going to start preparing tuna sandwiches and use 50/50 bread or try my hand at wholewheat/wholegrain.

This week I've basically just eaten:

A tuna baguette in the morning with no mayonaise

A meatball marinara sub 6inch for lunch

And for my dinner I've just had mash and chicken drummers with peas....

^ This is really good for me as I used to drink about 2 bottles of dr pepper a day (Litre bottles)

I used to have fast food or just eat a ton of chicken noodles

and I'd have snacks in between such as chocolate crisps etc

It will probably take me time to start eating as healthy as some of you...
But like shaun T says... It isn't about dieting, its about the lifestyle.

I'm going to start working out...

Eat two or so weetabix for breakfast (Was told they are good for fibre) (Also with semi skimmed milk)

Have a tuna sandwich for lunch

And then for dinner have mash and chicken with carrots and peas or something...

Will definitely try a few more healthy foods.

I know it isn't 100% healthy but its a lot better than I was before.
  • Btw I forgot your username but instead of buying the crates of water from costco because I heard they add stuff to the bottled water also...

Just get the bottles from your crates and fill them up with water. Place the water in the fridge... Drink it and then when its empty fill it back up and repeat.

You will save a ton of money and you get better quality water :P since nothing is added to the tap water.

You may want to buy a filter for your tap though

Your new plan sounds pretty decent for a start. Carrots and peas are a good start - peas are a great vegetable for protein. Mash is not actually unhealthy if you don't put a huge amount of butter/cream/salt (for you - due to your blood pressure) in it. If you try sweet potatoes and don't care for them, try transitioning by instead just putting one sweet potato in with your white potatoes. Also, if you can tolerate it, leave the skins on the potatoes and just cut them small -- a lot of the nutrition is in there. Plus it's less work. :) Tuna's another good source of protein - if you get bored you can also do chicken sandwiches.
  • I will try that with adding one sweet potatoe in
I can't eat the skins it just doesn't taste right to me lol

I don't put a huge amount of butter in my potatoes anyway... I do add a bit of semi skimmed milk though and I don't add any salt.

I am looking to lose about 5 stone and get down to about 13 stone.
I used to be 12 stone but was underweight which is when the doctor told me I needed to put on weight which Is why I'm here as I just kept putting it on.

Insanity is supposed to be a great workout and my friend lost 7lbs in one week
I'm going to keep doing that but until I can start it Ill start jogging in my room on the spot etc

I also have asthma which makes moving around a lot harder.
I may also get myself a heavy duty punch bag and start training in thai boxing again.

What about fruit, do you like fruit? And have you tried putting cheese on your veggies?
  • I like bananas but was told to avoid them due to them containing high amounts of potassium.
Apparently they aren't very good for blood pressure.

Huh? Did your doctor tell you that? or who?

High potassium can help counteract the effects of high sodium. Bananas are great unless you have some sort of potassium metabolizing disorder.
  • My doctor told me yes.
I thought they were good for me

I've been told by my doctor that I'm allergic to a few things (Cant actually remember which veg this was) But I've tried a ton of veg I also tried lettuce and came out in a rash
I don't mind carrots though and can eat them.
    I'm allergic to nuts.

The reason they make me vomit though is just that I hate the taste...
    I'm a very fussy eater.

I've been trying to cut down on portion sizes... Since I've always been a pretty big eater lol
    And I haven't snacked.

I also cut out fizzy pop altogether and have been drinking water constantly.

I used to do thai boxing and was fine at that point but had to quit due to money issues.
    (It was £50 a month)

    I'm starting insanity hopefully.

But yeah I live with my mom atm and she always does the food shopping and just buys pre prepared foods such as fish fingers battered cod and chicken.

So I don't really know where to start with the food side of things.

You'll grow out of it. My sister-in-law was the same. SO fussy with food & definitely didn't eat any vegetables/salad. Then one day, she went to a dietician & amazingly she now eats a whole variety of things. I guess the starchy potatoes & processed chicken wasn't doing it for her any more.

Good luck finding a diet that works for you & that you are happy with

One of my co-workers is on medication for high blood pressure and has been told to definitely stay away from bananas. It is something to do with the potassium. Best to avoid, if that's what the doctor says to do. No point gambling with that kind of thing.

What's your stance on pulses, OP? Do you like baked beans, etc? Beans are an excellent addition to your diet if you're keen on them. Whack a tin of lentils into your spag bog and you won't even notice them. Try falafel or hummus, both are very verstaile foods (and easy to make at home if you do like them). You can even mash some tinned butter beans into your mashed spuds and I doubt you'd ever notice them. Good for fibre and all sorts of nutrients

You know what, I used to haaaaaaaaaaaate some vegies, and now I absolutely rate them as some of my favourites. Mushrooms, zucchini and avocado were all on my hate list, and now I eat them almost every day. My tastes changed after going vegetarian. Possibly just coincidence though as this happened in my early 20s and I know tastes change as we mature.

Anyway best of luck, OP  I am impressed by your willingness to try new things. Some people are too afraid to do even that, but you're embracing the challenge. Enjoy your culinary adventures!
  • Just went out and bought some weetabix
