    Try Bulgarian squats.

I hate BSes but I just do them anyway. They scare me because if your balance isn't perfect, it's easy to fall over and have a whole gym point and laugh at you.

I was doing Single Leg frog jump burpees- this requires going down the long open corridore from the front of the gym toward the bathrooms... and I was half way through like my second set I think- and I pretty much just fell over at one point- I landed- and was too deep and just sat flat down on my *kitten*.

no on laughed. And that was literally the middle of the gym.

I don't think people laugh at people- and if they gawk or laugh do it's for doing something so insanely wrong they are more likely to fail and or hurt themselves- or it's just 100% ineffective. (guy on the cell phone doing single arm assisted pull ups- I think he was just doing them to keep himself busy while on the phone.

But someone trying to do a legitmate thing and just has a hard time- nah- people don't laugh at that.

    ^Truth.^

When I faceplanted (and I literally ended up nose and mouth first on the floor, so that's not an exaggeration) my first time on the stability ball, no one laughed. 12 people all rushed over to make sure I was okay, and several people all stuck around to spot me until I got the hang of it, but there was no laughter (at least not in front of me).

Even so, if I faceplant mid-Bulgarian squat and someone's been videoing me, I want a cut of the profit when the video goes viral on YouTube!

Man, I am not a fan of lunges either.....
Doing legs is bad enough....but lunges as well......ugh.

Sadly I have toothpicks for legs, so I have to do legs as much as possible.

I LOVE lunges and squats. I now feel a little sad for lunges because it seems everyone hates them lol. I do have a great love for them because I want a plumper, solid butt. Mine is flat and the only way to pump it up is to work it!

I HATE riding the bike. Oh goodness do I hate it. I think it's uncomfortable, boring, and I feel like I work so hard to burn calories on there. I would much rather run 20 miles than bike for the same amount of time.

I, therefore, typically avoid it. Right now I am limited to movement so am doing a lot of biking and I am bringing a book or magazine to see me through....and the I complain about it still the whole way to and from the gym

Worthwhile videoing and uploading then. If you fail, at least you'll make money from it. :D

  • I hate lunges too. I feel so awkward doing them and it just seems like I am doing them wrong. I have been focusing on different types of squats and added weight with them. I am gong to try lunges again this week since I feel stronger from all the squatting.

I don't bother with any exercises I hate, because there are thousands of exercises that work the same muscle groups. For instance, you said you love squats. Lunges and squats work the same muscle groups, so there's no real need to do both. Skip the lunges and do more squats.

I don't really agree with this statement - I've been doing squats for months and bb lunges for a few weeks yet doing jumping lunges the other day produced DOMS which the others did not, likewise when I added the bb lunges - so there's obviously a slight difference (I definitely think my butt gets a bit more involved in the lunges, for example).

I do agree that there's no point doing something you don't enjoy, although a lot of the time you do come to love them.
DOMS has absolutely nothing to do with whether an exercise is more or less effective than any other exercise. A lunge is just a split squat with your rear foot on the floor instead of on a bench, and emphasizes the quad more than anything. Works the same muscle groups. Can be useful if you have a left/right muscle imbalance, as you can isolate one side or the other, but since most people just do them exactly the same for both legs, there's really no extra benefit to lunging rather than squatting. It's personal preference.

Sorry, you misunderstand me - not more effective, just different :)

By different, did you maybe mean irrelevant?

Try step ups instead? Or split squats?

I hate cycling, its too efficient so very low exercise benefit unless you do 50 miles+. Sadly though, I have to do it every weekday as its how I get to work and back!

I so agree with you. Unfortunately my favorite class has a gabillion of them. I think they knew I had decided to work on my lunges. I'm gradually getting better at them, though my hips and thighs are killing me.

Hate them all you want, but lunges makes a butt nice, perky and round ;)
  • I hate lunges..I have awful balance...
    BUT
my trainer recommended to use a yoga block..
to hold onto it close to the chest whilst attempting to do a lunge...I thought he was trying make the exercise harder for me -but it actually made it easier...holding onto the block makes you having to activate your core and therefore helps with balance...give it a try!

Burpees are my absolute least favorite.

I curse them while I'm doing them, but they're an awesome exercise so I would have to say that I like them.

Which variation do you do? I.e. no jump, jump, press up and jump? (the British Army calls the press up and jump ones 'Ba$tards' lol)
  • I hate squats!! Just feels unstable and when you drop down low I am going to fall backwards.

Must be a form thing, but I would do lunges over squats any day of the week.

How do I over come this... do box squats. once a week..

I I hate burpees! And one-legged romanian deadlifts. The deadlifts because I fall over, the burpees because they are torture. I still do them because burpees get my heart rate up and I think the deadlifts will eventually help my balance.

I hate deadlifts !! I dont even do them. They dont make me feel comfortable and they are a pain in the *kitten*. Unless i am made to do them they will never be in my rotation lol

I have found that what shoe i wear when doing lunges makes a huge difference in my balance doing lunges. I need a flat shoe with no ridges and that keeps my stable.

I've got great balance. It's just that when you're holding two 40kg DBs things get bloody tricky!

So I find that doing lunges and moving my back foot is better than doing them to the front. I kinda liked those! KINDA....LOL
