:bigsmile: Once again a new fresh page on the calendar and a new year as an extra bonus.
:bigsmile: I am happy to be in the company of women who share similar goals of health, fitness, and emotional balance.

How did you do with your goals and resolutions for December?
What goals and resolutions do you have planned for January?
:flowerforyou: I like to make resolutions that are things that I can reasonably expect to accomplish.
December Resolutions (with end of the month comments)
*maintain weight (weight has stayed in a two pound range)
*dance 20 minutes at home three days a week (not much at the beginning of the month, but more at the end)
*act the way I want to feel (had to work hard at this but it saved me from some bad times)
*don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good (going well)
*walk one dog at a time until my back is 120% better (I’m beginning to like walking one dog at a time and will continue for the foreseeable future)
*new resolution----play with Bernie, the cat, for five minutes each day (it’s a challenge to notice the rare times he’s awake during the day, but we’ve played with some great homemade toys…he seems to be learning some new ways to play and stay active)
January Resolutions
*dance at least three dances a day for extra practice
*yoga twice a week (three times would be better)
*play with Bernie the cat at least 5 minutes a day
*don’t take things personally

Sylvia - your body heals itself when you are sleeping, so get as much rest as your body is telling you that you need. The cherries on that cherry cheese pie thing were the Comstock pie filling (or something like Comstock). Like I said, I wasn't real crazy about it, but told her that I did. I did freeze some of mine and I thought it was sort-of decent frozen. Well, at least better than not frozen. When cherries are on sale (that is usually when they are in season) I pit them and then freeze them.
Heather - our tradition is to have pork on New Year, never fowl. The reason is because a pig uses his nose first when going forward, a chicken scratches backwards and you want to go forward into the new year, not backwards. I know that people here in the south have something green (like a salad or peas or green beans) with their dinner to represent money.
Did 50 minutes of Denise Austin's boot camp DVD. It just now (duh) dawned on me that the Y is closed tomorrow (at least closed with the classes) so I had to change my workouts for the week. An ad on MFP reminded me that I haven't done the hula hoop on the Wii in a LOOOONNNGGG time, so I'll do that tomorrow. I'll go to the water class on Friday and then Sat go to the Y by me and use the AMT. There's this "challenge" that I'm in at the Y. You are supposed to exercise something like 4 times/week (I do that, no problem) and you get your name in for a drawing for a $50 gas card. I'm doing it more for the gas card than anything else. It ends on the 4th so I do need to go there and update my sheet that shows that I've worked out.
Happy New Year everyone. I told Vince last night that I was going to take a nap this afternoon so that I could stay awake at least until midnight....lol

Just made a birthday cake for Diana. A key lime cake. Don't really understand why every time I use the bumdt cake pan, the cake seems to stick to the pan. I'm wondering if it's non-stick coating is wearing off. I did spray it with non-stick spray, first, tho, but it still stuck some. Now I'm making Bryan's birthday cake -- a whiskey cake. I'm also planning to make some of the zucchinitots for Diana (thank you, Heather, for turning me on to them) Update: his cake didn't stick. Don't know what the difference is
Renny - what a sweet dh you have there not wanting you to be tempted by those donuts. Can you possibly bake them?

Allison - a friend of ours made lemoncello, and you are so right, it packs one heck of a punch! 55 pounds in a year is very very good, that's over 4 pounds a month!
Took the zucchini tots out of the pan. I think I needed more binder. They have good flavor, tho.

Jane in CO - I one time lost something bery dear to me and what helped me thru that was something someone else told me. "The person who found it needed it more than you". That's probably the way it is with your FitBit. Wasn't it Cheryl who lost hers once? If memory servesd me (and I could be wrong) she contacted the company and they sent her a new one. The one minute oats are more refined than the steel cut. I believe with the steel cut you get more nutrients, etc. Thanks for telling me about the sale at Dillards.
Sylvia - good news for your steakhouse (and for you)
Joyce - your dog was quite inventive! Years ago Vince had a dog (when he was little) and every year for his birthday Vince's mom would make one of those Pepperidge Farm chocolate on chocolate cakes for him and give it to him. He lived to be quite old, too.

DH is already in his pj's and it is not even 8 p.m. He and our youngest son worked hard today. I on the other hand spent the rest of my day in the easy chair reading a book and napping. I will be spending the evening watching t.v. ; if I can stay away that is. DD just called that she had sliced the top of her thumb with a new knife. Ouch.
Michelle -the oliebollen dough is flour, yeast, sugar, egg. Don't want that mixture in my body either! The deep frying makes it worse, but baking would be a waste of ingredients. :bigsmile: :bigsmile:
I made a veggie stirfry for myself today. It was my lunch and dinner.
I will get back to this thread to write my goals for Jan when I can be on the pc. Typing on the tablet is not my forte.

How does this thread work? Do we check in every week to say how things are going? Or do we just check in at the end of the month? :huh:
Here goes - a few goals for me for January 2014:
To lose 6 lbs by January 31 (to be well on my way to my personal Goal #2 for March 31)
To exercise a minimum of one hour, three times per week under the guidance of a personal trainer (already hired)
To stick at closely as I can to the vegan diet I'm trying to follow for the month of January (finish reading the book, too)

December goal was to lose 5 pounds but I only lost 4. Not bad considering. Still counts.
January goals, lose 5 pounds. Get back to rehab 3 days a week.

Thank you so much for posting this new thread, Barbie. You make a lot of good things possible because you keep this wonderful opportunity open to us all. I hope your new year is filled with good health, happiness and friendship.:drinker:
We had dinner at a local restaurant and the food was excellent. We ran into several good friends and a few acquaintances while we were there. This is one of the good things about living in a small town. It is possible to get to know a bigger proportion of the people and run into friends nearly everywhere.
It is only 8:30 Pacific Time, we’re home again, and I feel like it has been a full day. We won't see the ball drop in Times Square, but that kind of crowd makes us uncomfortable, anyway. I was pleasantly surprised by getting Happy New Years texts from two cousins, and that made me feel good.
I already summarized my progress on goals for December, so here are my new goals. I hope I make progress on drinking the water in goal 3. I have more confidence in the other two. I did get 5 glasses of water in today. Yay! (But I still need my bedtime glass.)
January goals:
1. Log every bite and swallow
2. Focus on fitness: daily cardio plus strength training a minimum of twice a week.
3. Water: According to an article a friend posted on facebook, drinking water at certain times maximizes its effectiveness on the body. So I’ll try to follow these recommendations:
* 2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs
* 1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion
* 1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure
* 1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack

Hi again!
At Sylvia's request I'll tell you a bit about myself: I was married for 30 years but am recently divorced. I have two wonderful adult daughters who live together in their own place with a dog they've adopted from a shelter. I work full time in mental health on an outreach team as a Peer Specialist. We work with the most serious and persistently mentally ill who often face homelessness, addictions, trouble with the law, and other challenges.
My weight loss journey stalled last January 28, 2013 after I was rear-ended in a motor vehicle accident. I have had physio until September but then that finished without full resolution of the injuries. Since then I have been experiencing further aches and pains.
Just recently, in an effort to motivate myself and provide some accountability for my actions, I found a personal fitness coach. We have our first assessment on Friday evening and he is saying that he will want to see me a minimum of three times per week. I expect to see results!
I have been vegetarian essentially since 1980 when I got married. It has been the last ten years or so that I have been trying to adopt a vegan (plant-based) diet. I would really like to give it a strict three month trial to see if it lives up to its claims.

My goals are to continue what I started in December:
Workout HARD 2-3 hours a week (walking was not doing it for me)
Continue logging calories-netting about 1600 a day
Over 50 friends who want to be my friends and keep me accountable are welcome. You must have an open food diary.0 -
I'm starting over again and anticipate gastric bypass surgery (after my fifth! attempt due to financial constraints). To me, the most important thing is to gain control over my eating so that I do not sabotage myself if the surgery becomes a possibility. To all of you, I wish success in your goals, whether they concern weight or other personal goals.

May those good and great things be in store for you as you enter this year! So happy to be able to see another year and have another opportunity to accomplish some of the things I want.
Not a lot of time to elaborate on a lot of things at this time, but will do more tomorrow.
The biggest goal I have for this month is to prepare myself for the Daniel Fast that usually starts on the second Sunday of this month for most people in the nation.
Also I did not lose the six pounds that I aimed for in December. But I did lose four pounds!!! Not too bad for a Christmas month. Yeah!!

We had a lovely NYE. Caviar, fillet steak, asparagus, bottle of red wine between us, then poached fresh apricots with half fat creme fraiche. Midnight a glass or two of Islay malts. Watching Big Ben on the TV striking midnight and fabulous fireworks. Our tiny village also exploded into fireworks outside our window. Then we turned to a party on the TV and sang along and I did "sofa dancing" for about an hour. (My knee is troubling me at the moment) . I think I have only missed midnight once in my life. I just love the sound of Big Ben bonging in the New Year. It can bring tears to my eyes. DSIL was there in person, but impossible to see her in the huge crowd. :drinker:
I have done my January goals, but I will do them again.
Lose 1lb.
Achieve a 3 min 30 sec plank.
Research my New York flights for October (my 65th birthday)
Try a new recipe.

I am proud that I managed a full gym and strength workout this morning.:noway: I had to adapt it for my knee. Yesterday's tough yoga workout with my friend in my house has left my hamstrings a bit sore and my knee sensitive, but we really went at it for an hour. My friend is 70 and an example to us all.
Welcome all the new people. Come in often and share with us. You will learn so much, not the least patience with yourself.:laugh: You will gain support and find humour and understanding. Persistence is the key. Never surrender!
My new preoccupation is what to wear to my best friend's 60th birthday party on the 18th. She has a posh 50s style frock to wear. Some of her friends have bought dresses. Hmmmmmm ............... The dress I bought for DSIL's 60th this summer I have never worn again. I want to be able to dance in whatever I wear as it is a disco and we all get to choose a track. I am having "Jumping Jack Flash " by the Rolling Stones, my favourite party music!:bigsmile:
Must jump in the shower and get my memoir bag sorted! (My task for the day) Kedgeree tonight.

Hello everybody!
I'm Sue and I write on a very rainy and windy New Years Day! I'm in Shropshire, England which is a beautiful rural county, although until about 18 months ago I lived in London.
I live alone and work from home so my gym trips are not only good for me physically and mentally but are a social outlet too...
I started last year at the same weight I am now, which is about 245. My ambition had been to lose a pound a week - and I did fine for three months and then gradually re-gained. But I am much fitter and stronger and have recovered from a couple of injuries so there has been some progress.
This year I'm going to change the way I look at this journey and do it in stages. I'm going to keep working with my trainer, as eat sensibly and drink water!
Aims for January
Drink a glass of water before each meal and two extras a day. It might not be the full amount I need but I need to establish a habit.
Go to gym at least four times a week - two training sessions, a spin class and one or two aqua classes would be ideal
Get outside every day regardless of the weather
Pre plan food - for January I'll be on M&S healthy meals - I think they are the best and healthiest available in the UK. I normally cook from scratch, but the problem with that is it's too easy to cook too much and eat it....so I'm going to stay out of the kitchen for once!
Get better metrics when my trainer measures me at the end of the month - whether that's weight or fat % loss I don't mind.

My name is Mary and I am from S/W Ontario. I was on this site more then a year ago and lost 50 pounds and was doing great. Last January my daughter was diagnosed with cancer and my focused turned to her and what she needed and I lost focus on me and put 30 pounds back on.
Now that we have things with her somewhat under control, I need to focus back on getting this weight off.
My resolutions for 2014
1) stay focused on Kate to make sure she is progressing
2) never lose sight that if I am not healthy I cant do her any good
3) lose that 30 pounds that sneaked back into my life
4) be thankful for every day that I have to smile, laugh and cry with my daughter
5) walk each day small steps are better then no steps

I met my major goal of December which was to do something kind for someone everyday.
I did write out some goals for 2014 and have them in places I will review daily. I am going to pick one goal a month to concentrate on in this forum. My first goal is to limit my TV watching. I am going to try for an hour a day. I will make exceptions like when my DH asked me to join him to watch That's Entertainment last night. I am looking forward to seeing what I do with the extra time.

Hi, I'm Patty from Cincinnati, Ohio. I love this board and the idea of making these resolutions. I started on MFP a month or so back but fell off the wagon with the holidays and being on vacation. Today that changes.
RESOLUTIONS:
To lose 6-8 lbs a month
To strength train 2times a week
To participate in cycling and ab class 3 times a week
To act like I want to be
To not take things personally
I borrowed two of these from others, I hope you don't mind but they sure fit.
I sure look forward to working with you all. Today at noon we have a 11/2 hr "Bring in the New Year" cycling class.0
