  • Not everyone can eat rice, it's not all about calories or allowing yourself to give into cravings.

    I'm a diabetic and rice does unfriendly things to me, no matter what kind, brown, black, red, you name it... except for wild rice and that, even in very small amounts. I prefer to keep my blood sugars in check by how I eat and activity and not by increasing insulin to compensate. It's about keeping that blood sugar steady and rice just doesn't work for me.

    There's absolutely nothing wrong with eating rice if you can and there's nothing wrong with substituting cauliflower either. Why would any one be 'offended' by the original poster asking for a recipe blows my mind. :huh:

    I apologize that my message is coming through so long after your original post. I just read through the responses and although I don't disagree with the posters that you can indulge every once in a while, I love having modified recipes that feel like indulgence even when healthy. I use the chopped cauliflower all the time as a "rice substitute" when making stir fry or fried rice. I try to do it as a half and half where it's a brown rice / cauliflower mix. Honestly I know it's in there, but I can't tell the difference in taste as there are so many other veggies ( I use broccoli, edamame, peas, carrots and occasionally water chestnuts in my fried rice) and enough seasonings that it all just blends. My daughter, who hates cauliflower, asks for seconds! And it's very filling!! :)

    Healthy for chinese food craving

    1 cup brown rice (best if 1 day old).. or quinoa in your case?
    2 tablespoons olive oil .. I like to use 1 tbsp sesame oil instead for better flavour
    1/2 cup cooked peas
    1/2 cup cooked chopped carrot
    1 cup broccoli floret
    3/4 cup sliced mushrooms
    1 egg, beaten
    soy sauce, to taste

    Directions:

    1 Heat 1 tbsp oil in pan and sauté mushrooms until browned.
    2 Remove from heat.
    3 Heat remaining oil in pan and add rice.
    4 Add egg and mix until rice is thoroughly coated with egg.
    5 Cook for 5-10 minutes on high, or until egg is lightly browned.
    6 Combine rice mixture and vegetables in large bowl and stir until vegetables are well mixed.
    7 Add soy sauce to taste and serve.

    I use Shirataki noodles to make LoMein. Thye are Tofu noodles. It's about $4 a pack, but worth it. Practically no carbs and high in fiber!

    Oh, there is also the frozen Healthy Choice Asian inspired steamers meals that run around 280-300cal sodium is 16% of daily intake. This is my substitute for Chinese food.. they have spicy tso chicken, sweet sesame chicken and a few others.

    My guess is it will taste just like fried shredded cauliflower, with whatever other ingredients you want to put in your fried cauliflower.

    Personally, I like stir fried cauliflower, but it doesn't taste anything like rice. Or potatoes.

    We eat fried rice fairly often. I put about 4 times the vegetables and about half the oil you get at most take out places.

    Make your own but use tons of vegetables, half the rice. Fry it up in a bit of oil, scramble an egg into it, and add some soy sauce.

    I make cauliflower fried "rice" all the time. Had some for dinner last night and leftovers today. I count carbs, not calories but making this at home is very low on both. I use a fresh head of cauliflower and grate it using my food processor. No it doesn't taste just like fried rice, because it's not rice. It's cauliflower. But I think it's a good low carb substitute if that's what your looking for.

    If you are looking for a low fat or low calorie alternative you might as well just go with steamed rice instead.

    Although a lot of Chinese takeaway food can be greasy, that's not true of all Chinese dishes. Try Ma Po Tofu

    You can reduce the amount of oil and substitute ground beef of turkey for the ground pork.

    Another non greasy stir fry is beef and tomato

    which is pretty similar to what my mom used to make.

    Also if you like Asian food you might want to try some lighter cuisines such as Korean, northern Thai, or Vietnamese that use less oil, in general.

    My dieting Chinese relatives substitute braised cabbage for plain rice, typically.
