Are we talking about the diary and reporting functions, or the community?

I'd pay for the community as it would cut down the derp by 75%.

No, I would accept pay from MFP though. Seems I'm doing most the work...

Hell No! I would just create my own site and app to replace it lol. If it ever came down to that.

I'm impressed. I have neither the time nor the ability to do this. If you do, I would suggest doing it, it is very lucrative.

I'd pay no more than $2.99 for the app. It's the best out of what I've used for tracking food.

if I could afford to pay to use a site to help me lose weight I'd join weight watchers or Jenny Craig. If MFP starts charging, I'll go back to using my book of foods and looking up my calories and set up my own database. I'm here for the friends and support not the convenience of having it calculated for me. I would give my email and website info to all my pals to keep in touch. I just hope MFP doesn't start charging.

    Edited for typos
  • That's a good point - I do wish there was some kind of vetting and cleanup of the entries.

That would be nice. I've seen some horrible entries. :(

no, I can count and add up my calories on my own, MFP just makes it easier and gives me a place to chat. I wouldn't pay for that.

All you people saying you wouldn't pay, you do realize that a small cost of $2.99 or whatever, saves hours of manual logging or searching for a reliable app?

    Amen to this
  • No. I'd use a notebook and pen, like I used to in the "old days".

Seeing that I am a student right now and creating a website for an assignment right now..I have no time lol.

I guess I would maybe pay a one time fee for it.... but I'd like a cost comparison of how much the profitability of users paying vs. advertisers paying works for the site first. Regarding why users paying would create a better site vs. advertisers paying.

Probably not. I start school soon and will only have an extra $56 a month in my budget. I would find a free alternative or just count calories on my own with a written food journal. It would be more time consuming though. :\

For people saying they'd pay to have an ad-free site: you can have an ad-free site right now if you install an ad blocking program. I use Ad Block Plus and have never seen an ad on here--for free!

I'd pay for the app to get rid of all the adverts

Firefox...ad block! I see no ads, ever.

Oh and I would gladly pay for MFP. It has been life changing for me.
  • This content has been removed.
  • I might if there were diet planning options, ad free app options, better moderated food entries, and personal data confidentiality agreements.

No. I switched to MFP from myfooddiary.com because I didn't want to pay anymore. I would pay for the app, though (assuming it was something in the $1-5 range).

Not in its current state, no.

  • No. I believe much of the allure of the site is in its seeming altruistic nature. I acknowledge (and tolerate/accept) the advertising under the assumption that a modest amount of bill paying is necessary.

But let us be perfectly honest, the TOOL is simply a facilitator for success... the hard working, determined members that volunteer their time constructing the database are the treasured asset.

I abhor the notion that an entity would seek to profit from uncompensated hard work of others.

That said, I have no problem with micro-transactions that would support OPTIONAL (and specific) feature enhancement (such as digital monitor integration). Keeping in mind that value is only returned for those that actually can leverage the optional (and specific) benefit. However, such micro-transactions should be one-off (non-recurring) expenditures.

I am on the fence concerning fee for advertising elimination. There is something inherently discomforting to the idea that one should pay for a less intrusive experience. I believe one begins to venture onto a slippery slope when one begins extorting serenity. I believe such behavior is a subtle erosion of the trust relationship between the consumer and the service provider.

There is a basket of suitable substitutes already in the marketplace. Further, the entry point for new/emerging competition is low based on the relatively mundane technology requirements and learning curve of development/support personnel.

I believe there are more and better monetizing opportunities through partnership agreements and community endorsements. Such opportunities are constructive and contributory (as opposed to extractive and demanding) on the community.

As a consequence, I'm almost inclined to reject the premise of this thread on the basis that there is an underlying flaw in the question. I am not opposed to monetizing efforts; although, I venture that one must reject "in-the-box" thinking or mutually-exclusive propositions.
