I want to lose more fat than muscle, so I eat lots of protein and include strength training in my exercise routine. One thing I have learned is that for morbidly obese people like myself have a lot of muscle under the fat. It takes a lot of muscle to move 300+ around.
And I really don't care where the fat is on my body, I just want it gone.0 -
That's it in a nutshell. Eat less that you burn.
You can't target where you lose it from though.
Care to qualify that statement? I'm not talking about what part of the body you loss fat from by the way.
Oh, you mean Fat vs. Muscle? Well of course, we all want to lose fat. So we exercise and eat enough protein.

When I was a burger away from 300 lbs, the only thing on my mind was reducing my weight. The notion of fat vs muscle loss was like trying to explain calculus to a pre-school child.
When I broke 200 lbs, I looked in the mirror and saw a deflated balloon with skin hanging down all over the place. It was only then that the serious work & effort started. It took me more time to get into shape after losing weight than it did to lose the weight!
Looking back, there are things I did that I should not have and things I did not do that I should have.
Will say that weight/resistance training should be part of every weight loss story. My route of a rapid change in calories, overall diet and intense cardio was not the best way to go. Resistance training may slow down the weight loss but the results are worth the effort and extra time.0 -
It's a curiosity, I've been following threads for bout a week and all I'm hearing people advise is eat less calories than you burn (with no other info or advise to go with it).
actually, it is often advised to maintain a reasonable deficit, get plenty of protein, and do resistance training of some sort to preserve muscle mass and maximize fat loss.0 -
At first my only consideration was losing weight because I was so big so I just reduced calories and upped exercise.
Now I am at point where I want to retain LBM so I strive to hit certain macros. For general health I also try to hit my micros as well.
Within those parameters I eat what I want.

When you lose weight, it's inevitable that a portion of the weight lost will be lean mass. Exercise is more effective for retaining lean mass than diet, the two in tandem reduce the likelihood of losing a significant portion of it. Only in cases of severe starvation or extremely restrictive nutrition will the body turn to needed skeletal muscle in order to fuel itself.
That's not entirely true. You don't have to starve yourself for the body to use muscle for fuel. The body doesn't care where it gets its energy from so if you are not giving it a reason to hang onto the muscle it will just as readily burn muscle as well as fat for fuel.
That's part of homeostasis within the body. If the body decides it doesn't "need" the extra muscle, because your not lifting weights to maintain it for instance, it will burn the extra muscle because it is actually a burden on the body to keep it if it is not needed. Muscles don't have to be being used to need energy to maintain themselves, so in a calorie deficit if your not using the muscles the body will burn it in an effort to reduce your energy requirement since it is not getting the energy by eating.0 -

This is exactly why you should not be trying to lose "weight". You should be trying to lose fat.
A lot of people don't care where the weight loss comes from, and I can understand that, but if you want a lean "fit" looking body you should be trying everything in your power to hold onto as much muscle as possible while losing weight. For this reason you should only use scale weight as a tool, along with body fat measurements, tape measurements, pictures, etc.
Some people just want to be thinner, and if they don't care about muscle then I guess it really doesn't matter where it comes from.
So to answer your question, I do care where it comes from. Muscle is hard to get so I want to keep every bit of it I have earned...

Started by purely counting calories and not exercising and it worked for weight loss. Its only through research, asking a lot of questions on these forums, getting great advice but sometimes challenging that advice that I have changed things around.
I track my weight but I use a lot of tools to track my progress, BMI is one of them, body measurements another and I do use a body fat analyser along with entering my measurements into various websites to try and track bf%
Being obese when I started it looks as though my body fat reduced nicely to start but then I followed advice and increased my protein intake and now I use weights at least 3 times per week
Hopefully since then I have been losing a larger % of bf compared to muscle0 -

Key word, needed muscle.
Your body will, absolutely, use its muscle mass for fuel. However, it won't use muscle mass you use on a continuous basis unless it absolutely has to.

Yep. I measure weight, BD%, measurements monthly and have done so for almost 3 years. I have been working out (cardio and weights), and have made adjustments over this time to try to maximize retention of LBM. For example:
* Jan 2013-June 2013 I lost 10 pounds of which 66% was fat.
I increased weight training in June, and again in Jan 2014 (increase in both time spent lifting and added heavy lifting compared to primarily circuit training).
* June 2013-Feb 2014 I lost 13 pounds, of which 97% was fat.
* Total weight loss 61pounds, of which 83% is fat (much of the loss is before I joined MFP).
I was using the handheld electronic device at the gym to measure BF%, so of course the BF% are estimates, but the change is significant enough to show statistical relevance. I am not trying to lose weight quickly, I would rather lose it wisely. I think this type of information is pretty widely noted in many of the threads.
ETA: also have made changes to my macros to increase protein consumption, which seems to make a difference in composition of loss.0 -

Agreed healthy weight lose shouldn't be about what you can't eat it should be about what you should eat most of.
My only reason for posting this thread is I don't think most people coming into weight lose for the first time understand the risks of loading lean mass (muscle, connective tissue, bone, sinew, organs).0 -
I'm trying to spot reduce bone, but only from my bulky ribcage. Do I just eat low calcium foods and do lots of foot exercises?0

I do and I dont. I am happy to lose weight from everywhere as I am wobbly everywhere lol. BUT I really want to lose some size from my mummy tummy and my thighs. Its all well and good getting smaller but then having thighs that look waaaay out of proportion0

With almost 200 lbs to lose altogether, right now i don't care much where the weight comes from. It just needs to be off. 70 pounds later, I am feeling better and moving more. I am now thinking about some toning, building a little muscle.0
