Surrounded by people with unfortunate hygiene issues...

I am fortunate that I have a job that allows me to work from home a few days a week. However, this has made the days in the office more painful because I am much more aware of how I am exposed to other human beings and their unfortunate hygiene issues.

This week alone I have witnessed:

-Numerous people coughing into their hands instead of a tissue or the crook of their elbow. I sure love having to use the same door knobs, handles on the fridge, elevator buttons, copy machine buttons, and drinking fountain handles with them.

-Numerous people walking directly out of the bathroom after coming out of the stall or stepping away from the urinal. I sure love having to use the same door knobs, handles on the fridge, elevator buttons, copy machine buttons, and drinking fountain handles with them.

-Numerous people working up a good sweat in the gym, going into the locker room, and then reappearing 5 minutes later dressed in work clothes without having showering. I get it if you do a short workout and don’t really work up a sweat, but if your hair and clothes are soaked, I think a shower is advisable.

As a pseudo- germaphobe, these kinds of hygiene breaches are distrurbing. I have two young kids at home that seem to get sick at the drop of a hat, so I spend my days in the office practically bathing in antibacterial hand sanitizer. I guess it is asking too much for people to keep their germs to themselves?

Even worse I have seen at my gym the same man who comes and runs on the treadmill in jeans and a polo and doesn't even go in to the locker room to change....he must then wear those same clothes to work.... UGH!!!

It really is rather deplorable ... I don't get it.

It's bad in my office, and I wash my hands religiously because of it. And have the dry skin to prove it, despite my attempts at slathering on lotion.

Yeah, pretty much. They're adults - they'll do what they want.

A bit of advice, though. Lay off the antibacterial hand sanitizer. It's not as effective as soap and it dries out your skin more than soap. Dried out skin can form micro-tears and admit germs more easily. Plus, as a microbiologist, I cringe when I hear about people using antibacterial agents more often than is needed. Use soap for normal washings, and use a tissue or similar as a barrier if touching buttons, etc, bothers you.

omg, we think alike! I feel the same way. I simply dont understand. People always laugh at me because I sanitize a lot. As if I am some paranoid germ freak. Excuse for me for not wanting to catch the flu and keep my office as clean as possible.
I eat out to lunch with coworkers & not one of them washes their hands. I mean, I get that I sanitize my hands more than the average person, BUT, its common sense to at least wash your hands before eating (or at least I thought)

Oh man, I hear ya. My office is located in the same building as my company's gym and the stuff I see and the things I smell.....*shudders* We have sanitizer for them to use, at the bare minimum, and I haven't had to replace the bottles in like 2 years!! 2 years!! What the heck?!?

I'm soooo not a germaphobe. I wash my hands after using the restroom but that's pretty much it. I don't use sanitizer etc. I never get sick. You just never know.

Latest studies say we are too clean and our resistence to disease is weak--especially our kids. I grew up on a farm and we were exposed to worse and were rarely sick. Studies show kids that have dogs are healthier because they get more germs. Alergies are also on the rise--less germ resistance. So, all you scientists out there--what do you say? Are the things I'm reading true?

OP should invest in disposable gloves if touching other peoples' germs is this big of an issue. Also, might want to expose your kids to more germs so they can build up a tolerance/antibodies and probably not be sick so much.

I'm not a germaphobe, but I can't stand it when people don't wipe down machines at the gym after using them. I hate having to get on a treadmill where there's sweat droplets over the console. The gym I go to has signs posted asking people to wipe down machines. They provide the wipes too, but there are always a few who don't wipe.

I'm not a germaphobe but I'm a big fan of personal hygiene and making sure mine doesn't offend someone else's nose.

Or get a hospital grade hand sanitizer. More effective than how people generally wash hands and moisturizing too. If I washed my hands as often as I sanatize they'd be cracked and bleeding by the end of the work day.

Yeah, that's good advice, but practically impossible for me to carry out! I have to go through 2 doors to get to our bathroom (one has a door code, so it is virtually impossible to use a paper towel to reenter), so even when I'm able to wash up properly, by the time I return to my desk, I am in need of hand gel.

People are gross. They're going to continue to be gross whether you notice it more or not.

After working out in the evening I put my clothes back on, since they're going to get washed, and go home to shower. I certainly prefer a short drive smelly to getting athlete's foot from a gym shower.

I open the bathroom door with a paper towel and carry it to my desk, where it's dropped in the trashcan. Adapt and overcome.

I am not a germaphobe. Builds immunity and all that stuff.

And since when was sweat anti-hygienic?

If you ever saw tests of common objects for fecal matter, semen, and blood, you'd never leave the house.

I never touch sanitizers. I'll wash after leaving the restroom. If I shower or not after a workout it's no one's business.

    And I never get sick.

Your body needs to build an immunity. You can't avoid germs, no matter how hard you try. May as well be able to fight them off.

Whether your showering habits are the business of others or not isn’t the issue. It is matter of consideration and civility in not exposing others to your stink. Yeah, I know, no one ever thinks that they stink; think again!

Also, it isn’t solely a matter of whether getting exposed to someone else’s phlegm, poop, or urine makes you sick; this is a vile experience without even considering the germs. I almost never get sick either, not because I build immunities by exposing myself to to other people’s bodily fluids, but because I wash my hands a lot, sanitize my hands, and try to avoid touching my nose or mouth between hand washings.

Haha, no doubt, but if I can influence even one person to change his/her gross ways, I feel like I have accomplished something! Perhaps it was a lack of parental guidance ?

I'm not sure if you've ever heard of this but some people think excessive sanitizing and things make one MORE prone to illness because they don't get to build up antibodies or immunities or something.

I think it's the reason the first year kids go to school is so rough with sicknesses. Once they've been there a bit they become the walking petri dishes the rest of the kids are and become hardy enough to do all the gross things kids do at school without suffering too many ilnesses.

I don't know if this theory is true but it seems to play out at schools.

This guy might be behind the theory.

If you ever saw tests of common objects for fecal matter, semen, and blood, you'd never leave the house.

LoL. Didn't they recently test some library copies of Fifty Shades of Grey and they tested positive for herpes or some other wonderful VD? Can't recall the specifics, but it was funny and gross.
    :noway:

    Edit. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv-movies/fifty-shades-grey-book-found-traces-herpes-cocaine-article-1.1520974

    Herpes and cocaine. Yep.

  • Hey, I'm on the same page with you guy!

I am grateful that I work from home now. I used to have a desk job and folks would walk out of the restrooms without washing their hands. I know they did this!! I worked in a library and back in tech services you must keep your hands clean. I eat out very little because I used to work for a restaurant as the hostess way back when. I had to jump on people's back sides because they were in food prep and did not wash their hands!!!! Crazy.

Going to work when you are coughing up what sounds like small turtles is another thing I hated. I rarely get sick now.

Ugh that's gross. There's a man in my office who wears the same shirt for a week and I swear, only bathes on a Sunday. The smell on a Friday is unbearable. He has a habit of leering over you while you're sitting at your desk and I feel like I'm trapped in a stink prison - the amount of times I've nearly died from holding my breath is too many to count. I'm sure I'm running out of lives.

I'm soooo not a germaphobe. I wash my hands after using the restroom but that's pretty much it. I don't use sanitizer etc. I never get sick. You just never know.

Pretty much the same. I will also wash my hands before cooking and after walking the dog but not always before eating. I also don't always wash my fruit!

I don't like using hand sanitizer unless I absolutely have to - like after using a port-o-let while racing. Washing with warm soap and water feels like it gets my hands so much cleaner and doesn't leave any residue.
  • I won't even go into the guy working on one of his pimples in a little clip on mirror at the checkout register in a grocery chain store. He was the cashier!

Sorry I messed up lunch for you.:smooched:

I'm not sure if you've ever heard of this but some people think excessive sanitizing and things make one MORE prone to illness because they don't get to build up antibodies or immunities or something.

I think it's the reason the first year kids go to school is so rough with sicknesses. Once they've been there a bit they become the walking petri dishes the rest of the kids are and become hardy enough to do all the gross things kids do at school without suffering too many ilnesses.

I don't know if this theory is true but it seems to play out at schools.

Nah, there were several people with the flu this year in my office. Never did I get the flu or even cold. Sanitizing works for me. I think its a combination of your own immune system and sanitizing. Who knows, maybe my mother let me play in the dirt when I was a kid, boosting my immune system, lol. Lucky me! Thanks mom
