I don't go to the gym to smell pretty. I'm not exposing anyone to any bodily fluids anymore than the normal tiny particles that no one can escape that are everywhere around us.

Your phobias are not my problem.

You may not go to the gym to smell pretty – but what about work? I was referencing not showering after using the work gym and then returning to work, which has nothing to do with using the work gym and then going home or using a commercial gym on your own time. If you think it is okay to be sweaty and stink in an office environment, you have an entirely different definition of professionalism than I do.
  • so you avoid germs like mad....

    and are a germaphobe...

yet your kids get sick at the drop of a hat...

    how's that working for you?

seems they have a compromised immunity....

Even worse I have seen at my gym the same man who comes and runs on the treadmill in jeans and a polo and doesn't even go in to the locker room to change....he must then wear those same clothes to work.... UGH!!!

Oooooh. I bet he smells fabulous!

Perhaps he wants to smell like Ron Burgundy's Sex Panther... the natural way

There are people with poor hygiene in all walks of life. Some of these people work in restaurants.

Ugh that's gross. There's a man in my office who wears the same shirt for a week and I swear, only bathes on a Sunday. The smell on a Friday is unbearable. He has a habit of leering over you while you're sitting at your desk and I feel like I'm trapped in a stink prison - the amount of times I've nearly died from holding my breath is too many to count. I'm sure I'm running out of lives.

Keep Febreeze on your desk and give him a courtesy spray when he looms?

My dearly departed granny always said kids need to eat a peck {1/2 bushel} of dirt when they were crawling. While that might be overstating it, playing in the dirt, and eating a little of it builds kids' immune system. I never met a mud puddle I didn't want to play in when I was little, {and even after I grew up if you count dirt bikes} yet I have managed to live this long, mostly without ever getting sick.

You know it's funny, it's almost like my life has absolutely nothing to do with you... probably why I never consulted you as to any of the choices I make.

Read the original post - It is crystal clear that I was only talking about the work environment. Are you just here looking for some random, off topic back and forth today?

What about sneezing??? I'm not a germaphobe, but when someone sneezes I just picture myself walking through that mist and I shiver.

Gross. I've just made my stomach hurt.

so what you are saying is you are hooped...

    why even kvetch and complain?

my daughter (I am not a germaphobe BTW) went to preschool and daycare....got sick...twice...

her cousin's mom IS a germaphobe and actually had to pull him out of daycare and preschool because he kept getting sick if someone looked at him wrong. She insisted it was the building quality towards the end.

finally a doctor said to her "why don't you just let him get dirty once and a while."

you make your own misery....the funny part is...you want to spread it to the rest of us with negative complaining word germs such as this post.

I pay good money to play in mud as a grown up.

i was expecting to hear about co-workers who have bad BO, stinky breath or picking their nose and eating it or pissing into the office waste bin or something....

Too much germophobia is counterproductive as your immune system needs exposure to germs to be able to build up immunity to them. I went through a germophobic phase, and it caused me to get a lot of minor stomach upsets, which didn't happen in the rest of my life when I wasn't sterilising everything. When I learned how the immune system works (I was at uni at the time) I changed my germophobic ways, and stopped getting ill so often. what's important is knowing when there's a real risk of a serious infection, and when to just leave germs be. The vast majority of germs are totally harmless. Even some of the ones that will make you ill you can't really avoid. But exposure helps... I find that if I go somewhere new, the first few months i get ill a lot then after that I rarely get ill because I've built up resistance to all the local bugs.

It’s an odd day when one gets criticized for wanting to avoid other people’s snot and poop. Seriously? Haha, alright then…

Kids get sick in preschool and daycare from other sick kids. Their teachers constantly complain that parents dump their sick kids on them, when they should stay home to get better and not infect everyone else.

My kids aren’t raised to be germaphobes at all. When they come in from the outside, they wash their hands. When they sneeze or cough, they do it into their elbows, not their hands. That’s it. If that is over the top, I shudder to think what your standards of hygiene are.

I never touch sanitizers. I'll wash after leaving the restroom. If I shower or not after a workout it's no one's business.

    And I never get sick.

Your body needs to build an immunity. You can't avoid germs, no matter how hard you try. May as well be able to fight them off.

Whether your showering habits are the business of others or not isn’t the issue. It is matter of consideration and civility in not exposing others to your stink. Yeah, I know, no one ever thinks that they stink; think again!

Also, it isn’t solely a matter of whether getting exposed to someone else’s phlegm, poop, or urine makes you sick; this is a vile experience without even considering the germs. I almost never get sick either, not because I build immunities by exposing myself to to other people’s bodily fluids, but because I wash my hands a lot, sanitize my hands, and try to avoid touching my nose or mouth between hand washings.

I dare ya to complain to HR. LOL

I mean seriously, can you even IMAGINE how awful it is for a manager/supervisor to bring up hygiene issues. And you're complaining about something which I consider pretty trivial. What would you like your boss to do? Can you imagine the conversation "Yea, Bill, I've received some complaints and would appreciate it if you showered after you worked out"? Really? LMAO!!!!

I mean if you're THAT concerned about it - offer to give a safety presentation on washing your hands during the flu season. Or SOMETHING. It's like you're not even looking for a solution.

I would start opening every door with a paper towel. Regardless of how many doors you have to go thru, where there's a will, there's a way.

Also, I have heard on more than one occasion that hand sanitizers can do more damage than good. So be careful with that.

Soooo do your kids wash their elbows when they wash their hands? The germs don't go safely away or are stowed for disposal later JUST because they coughed into their elbow.

LOL Sorry, this whole thread is just funny and ridiculous.

I'm soooo not a germaphobe. I wash my hands after using the restroom but that's pretty much it. I don't use sanitizer etc. I never get sick. You just never know.
I don't know how we survived before the world of sanitizing and being germaphobes. When we were growing up we didn't think about this stuff and I don't think we were any less healthy. I wash my hands regularly but everything we touch is gonna have cooties on it. The door into a store, the pen you use to sign receipts, the gas pump.... There are millions of ways to get germs and you can make yourself crazy trying to avoid them.

As for the stinky people at the gym,oh well it's a reflection on them, if they want to be dirty than that is their problem, not mine.

Numerous people working up a good sweat in the gym, going into the locker room, and then reappearing 5 minutes later dressed in work clothes without having showering. I get it if you do a short workout and don’t really work up a sweat, but if your hair and clothes are soaked, I think a shower is advisable.

After working out in the evening I put my clothes back on, since they're going to get washed, and go home to shower. I certainly prefer a short drive smelly to getting athlete's foot from a gym shower.

And the one about the dude in jeans and a polo. How do you know he's GOING to work?

There's no way I'm using a gym shower. I'll work out in my work clothes after I'm off, then go HOME and shower.

I go home to shower, too. Using either the car or the bike, so no one would be able to smell me. :-)
Aside from that, I agree with the germ thing. My pet peeve is people who come to work sick, or go to a family get-together when they're sick. OK, maybe some people HAVE to work (no sick days??), but going to social things when you're full of snot? Antisocial.

The not washing hands after using a public bathroom gets me every time. I get paranoid that someone outside of the bathroom is not going to hear the water running in the sink and think I didn't wash my hands. How do people not feel shame about not washing their hands when someone actually is present to witness their not doing it?

I used to work with (and share a single, unisex bathroom with) a middle-aged man who still hadn't learned to urinate into the toilet bowl, not on the sides of the bowl, the floor, etc. He was the big boss, too. Imagine how much I respected him.

-Numerous people walking directly out of the bathroom after coming out of the stall or stepping away from the urinal. I sure love having to use the same door knobs, handles on the fridge, elevator buttons, copy machine buttons, and drinking fountain handles with them.

lol my son wore hoodies to school every day for this exact reason!

This world is becoming so anti-germ to the point where we are becoming afraid of each other. I think people who worry about it, tend to get sick more. Wash your hands often and get over it? I hate sharing the world with others too, but its time you learn to accept it.

I'm definitely not a germ-a-phobe and I can;t remember the last time I was sick. Maybe when I was a child...

Our immune systems are reactive and only develop in the presence of pathogens. Trying to avoid them at all costs will only make you sicker in the long run.

If everyone only knew the sheer amount of germs, bacteria, viruses and pathogens in general, are around and on you every second of everyday, you'd probably go make yourself live in a bubble full of bleach.

    Get used to it.

How about the guy that sweats all over the machines in the gym but doesn't spray them off when he moves to the next machine! I spend 1/2 my time cleaning machines!

Just wash your hands and DON'T TOUCH YOUR FACE!

If you ever saw tests of common objects for fecal matter, semen, and blood, you'd never leave the house.

LoL. Didn't they recently test some library copies of Fifty Shades of Grey and they tested positive for herpes or some other wonderful VD? Can't recall the specifics, but it was funny and gross.
    :noway:

    Edit. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv-movies/fifty-shades-grey-book-found-traces-herpes-cocaine-article-1.1520974

    Herpes and cocaine. Yep.

Little off topic, but the mention of cocaine and germs made it come to mind... 9 out of 10 baby change stations (in the UK) have traces of cocaine on them!
