It's a good thing you don't have little kids literally sneezing in your face at work. When they are holding a violin and they don't know it's coming...watch out! You get bathed in little kid spittle.

I dare ya to complain to HR. LOL

I mean seriously, can you even IMAGINE how awful it is for a manager/supervisor to bring up hygiene issues. And you're complaining about something which I consider pretty trivial. What would you like your boss to do? Can you imagine the conversation "Yea, Bill, I've received some complaints and would appreciate it if you showered after you worked out"? Really? LMAO!!!!

I mean if you're THAT concerned about it - offer to give a safety presentation on washing your hands during the flu season. Or SOMETHING. It's like you're not even looking for a solution.

I would start opening every door with a paper towel. Regardless of how many doors you have to go thru, where there's a will, there's a way.

Also, I have heard on more than one occasion that hand sanitizers can do more damage than good. So be careful with that.

I have brought the issue up to our wellness committee and my management. Why would you assume otherwise?

Soooo do your kids wash their elbows when they wash their hands? The germs don't go safely away or are stowed for disposal later JUST because they coughed into their elbow.

LOL Sorry, this whole thread is just funny and ridiculous.

My kids do not eat or open door with the crooks of their elbows. That’s the point of coughing into that area, right?
If you are so worried about poop, who changed your kids diapers?

I did. Then I washed my hands. I’m not sure what your point is!

I actually just had a conversation with a coworker that management should encourage people who are sick to stay home. Had a coworker coughing up a lung and all I could think about was how gross the door knob, fridge door, etc would be. I also take public transit so I think it's made me a bit of a germophobe.

People are gross, the best thing you can do is just keep your hands clean.

I work from home too and had to go into the office one day this week. Holy not indoor voices, Batman and just people not respecting personal spaces. Drove me nuts!

I am fortunate that I have a job that allows me to work from home a few days a week. However, this has made the days in the office more painful because I am much more aware of how I am exposed to other human beings and their unfortunate hygiene issues.

This week alone I have witnessed:

-Numerous people coughing into their hands instead of a tissue or the crook of their elbow. I sure love having to use the same door knobs, handles on the fridge, elevator buttons, copy machine buttons, and drinking fountain handles with them.

-Numerous people walking directly out of the bathroom after coming out of the stall or stepping away from the urinal. I sure love having to use the same door knobs, handles on the fridge, elevator buttons, copy machine buttons, and drinking fountain handles with them.

-Numerous people working up a good sweat in the gym, going into the locker room, and then reappearing 5 minutes later dressed in work clothes without having showering. I get it if you do a short workout and don’t really work up a sweat, but if your hair and clothes are soaked, I think a shower is advisable.

As a pseudo- germaphobe, these kinds of hygiene breaches are distrurbing. I have two young kids at home that seem to get sick at the drop of a hat, so I spend my days in the office practically bathing in antibacterial hand sanitizer. I guess it is asking too much for people to keep their germs to themselves?
Exposure to germ builds immunity. Lack of exposure makes it much easier to get ill and for some seriously ill. To keep it to a minimum the best thing you can do is wash your hands and keep them as clean as possible.
Working in the environment that I do, I personally haven't been sick in almost 4 years now. That's with all the exposure to situations that you've mentioned.

I'm soooo not a germaphobe. I wash my hands after using the restroom but that's pretty much it. I don't use sanitizer etc. I never get sick. You just never know.
THIS. Good immunity gets built through exposure. That's why we get vaccinations in the first place.

Latest studies say we are too clean and our resistence to disease is weak--especially our kids. I grew up on a farm and we were exposed to worse and were rarely sick. Studies show kids that have dogs are healthier because they get more germs. Alergies are also on the rise--less germ resistance. So, all you scientists out there--what do you say? Are the things I'm reading true?
TRUE. IMO, the only place sanitizer should be needed is if one is going to eat and can't wash their hands.

I'm not sure if you've ever heard of this but some people think excessive sanitizing and things make one MORE prone to illness because they don't get to build up antibodies or immunities or something.

I think it's the reason the first year kids go to school is so rough with sicknesses. Once they've been there a bit they become the walking petri dishes the rest of the kids are and become hardy enough to do all the gross things kids do at school without suffering too many ilnesses.

I don't know if this theory is true but it seems to play out at schools.

This guy might be behind the theory.

My DD hasn't missed a day of school for almost 3 years now. I KNOW she's not keeping her hands as clean as I would like and probably always touching her face, eyes and nose a lot as well. But in the beginning when she started school, she had to stay home quite a few times because of being ill.

Nah, there were several people with the flu this year in my office. Never did I get the flu or even cold. Sanitizing works for me. I think its a combination of your own immune system and sanitizing. Who knows, maybe my mother let me play in the dirt when I was a kid, boosting my immune system, lol. Lucky me! Thanks mom
10 second rule exists in my home. I do keep the home clean, but I'm not sanitizing everything. We don't wear shoes in the house so that helps keep some of the unwanted crap down to a minimum and most of my home is hardwood. So if a chip hit the floor...........10 second rule.

I think there could be a correlation in there somewhere. That's been my (limited experience) through my work as a Swimming Teacher - the kids with the most obsessively neat parents where the ones that got sick often.

I use it after being on public transportation as well, unless I can wash my hands. I just don't want to know what's sitting on those seat backs, railings etc. :noway:

omg, we think alike! I feel the same way. I simply dont understand. People always laugh at me because I sanitize a lot. As if I am some paranoid germ freak. Excuse for me for not wanting to catch the flu and keep my office as clean as possible.
I eat out to lunch with coworkers & not one of them washes their hands. I mean, I get that I sanitize my hands more than the average person, BUT, its common sense to at least wash your hands before eating (or at least I thought)

When my kids started school and they ate lunch there, the teachers never had them wash their hands first. I'm guessing not enough time or sinks to cycle them all through?

People have the right idea that good immunity is brought through exposure, but some older people with weaker immune systems cannot handle more exposure. You also have to be careful with young children. There are also some diseases that mutate often and are so nasty that you aren't going to become immune to them.

Wash your hands and don't touch your face a lot during the day and you'll be mostly OK.

I've seen reports stating that personal cell phones are actually worse for germ contamination than the handle of a urinal. Now THAT'S scary.

You should see what people do on the subway in D.C. They lean up against poles and rub their buttcracks ALL over the surface. Talk about a "eeeeeek" moment. :noway:

I'm soooo not a germaphobe. I wash my hands after using the restroom but that's pretty much it. I don't use sanitizer etc. I never get sick. You just never know.

Right there with you. I mean I do it after going to the bathroom and after school but that's really it.

Here’s one for you. My co-worker doesn’t wash her hands after using the restroom, she likes to each chips & licks her fingers after then touches her keyboard & everything else. She also has a plastic spoon in her pen holder that she licks & reuses for her coffee & greek yogurt everyday all day. In addition to the finger licking she sometimes sticks her fingers in her mouth to dislodge something & you here this loud smack as she pulls her fingers out of her mouth. She also talks w/her mouth full. It is so disgusting. I am constantly washing my hands & using Purell. I work really hard on trying to keep a neutral expression when she is talking to me & when she comes over to my desk to view something on my computer I just cringe & lean far far away from her. It’s just so gross.

Unfortunately I have a strong sense of smell and I regularly have to cope with the following:

    - bad breath.....each puff of your stinky, stale breath floats my way when you are on the treadmill next to me huffing and puffing.....gross!
    - unclean workout clothes....a lot of people have a mildew smell on their gym stuff for some reason....throw a capful of bleach in your washing machine, problem solved
    - *kitten* sweat on the seat you didn't clean, or the mat you failed to wipe down
    - men or women who drown themselves in cologne before hitting the gym.....

I don't mind the smell of sweat, honestly. That can smell sexy sometimes, or at least natural. But the other things are quite unpleasant. And the folks who stroll out of the bathroom without washing their hands......gross, gross, gross.

    Corrected my typos:

Here’s one for you. My co-worker doesn’t wash her hands after using the restroom, she likes to eat chips & licks her fingers after then touches her keyboard & everything else. She also has a plastic spoon in her pen holder that she licks & reuses for her coffee & greek yogurt everyday all day. In addition to the finger licking she sometimes sticks her fingers in her mouth to dislodge something & you hear this loud smack as she pulls her fingers out of her mouth. She also talks w/her mouth full. It is so disgusting. I am constantly washing my hands & using Purell. Oh yeah, if we're going up the food alley: during meetings one of my coworkers takes a cookie or whatever from the plate, breaks a piece off and puts the rest back. Nobody's going to eat that s***. We don't know where those hands have been. :noway:
