Yesterday, I took a silly picture for my friend and was surprised to notice that my face is slimmer than it has been.
Also, I bought a Halloween costume off the rack the other day! I was worried because it said it was for sizes 12-16 and my last shopping trip I bought 20's (was close to 18, but not quite there), but it fit and was even a little baggy on me! My dad teased that by next year, I'll probably be in a Small16 -
dragged out my winter clothes last night, and put on a sweatshirt with a zipper that you can unzip from the bottom as well as the top. Used to be I would always unzip it before sitting, or it would be uncomfortably tight. Last night I didn't unzip it!19

Since it's getting cooler out here in New England, I found a nice jacket in my closet that I haven't been able to wear for the past year. Put it on today and had no problem zipping it up! Woo Hoo!16

OK, this is impossibly geeky, but it's an NSV for me: I've been screwing up too often rowing bow (i.e., being the steersperson) in my rowing boats, especially the quad (four rowers, two oars each). On Monday, I hit a bleepin' rock, on the bleepin' bank. That's *terrible*! I was feeling really mad at myself. But generally, no one else ever wants to take the responsibility of rowing in bow.
Today, one of my fellow rowers, knowing how grumpy I felt, volunteered to do it for her first time ever. But that's not the NSV.
Bowing takes a lot of mental bandwidth (we're traveling in a direction opposite to the one we're facing, so bow watches over her shoulder or in a tiny mirror, steers, calls commands to the boat, and more). Today, I got to focus on just my own personal rowing technique . . . and had what I think is an important insight about a technical issue that's been troubling me for multiple seasons. (It was turbulent puddles, pretty sure you don't want me to explain! 😆).
I now have a theory that I can test, and maybe improve that aspect of my technique, to get better power application . . . after puzzling about it for several years. Really happy! (. . . even though I'm sure this makes zero sense to anyone else . . . WTH, "turbulent puddles"??!?)24 -
I had gifted my mom a dress in April for her birthday which she didn't like. She told me the colour would suit me better and I should keep it and not return it. So I tried it on and I couldnt pull it below my shoulders and i tried it again this morning and I could pull it down but it's still tight around my arms!! Yay!! Gotta start lifting again regularly20

If rowing shells and skulls is like paddling canoes, there's never enough practice for the basic stroke. Even for a whitewater kayak, the structure of the stroke makes so much difference. Moving to flatwater, making it's perfect technique, not physical prowess, that gives you an advantage over the long haul. A clean entry with the blade, then just enough time to catch up to the speed of the water, then the catch, then the power portion, then easing off and letting the blade move through the water, de-flex, and give back stored energy. Then a clean exit, feather if necessary, then repeat.
I bet I'd love rowing a shell or a skull. The ergometer isn't that much fun. My raft sure is, but that's a whole other story.5 -
The other day I took my 3 year old to Urban Air kid's gym. I had dutifully hung out in the toddler section with her where she stayed for quite awhile. All of a sudden she makes a run for the older kids section. I chase her as she runs toward the ball pit marked for kids at least 42 inches. She fearlessly jumps in and I get there just in time to hear her scream "Mommy!" Without thinking I jump in to save my "drowning" child. There were no ladders to use to climb out. I was able to hoist myself out of there by myself after positioning my kid above the balls and then pulled her out of that scary ball pit. One of my goals was to be able keep up with my kid. I'm actively accomplishing that!33

The scale has not been my friend recently so I love coming to this thread for encouragement, motivation, and a reminder that there is more to this journey than the scale. And also I have recently been feeling extra insecure about certain parts of my body - my stomach and my arms. And when I measured recently my numbers hadn't changed a bit
So I want to celebrate that for the last few days I have been extra intentional about strength training, stretching, and getting lots of steps (either some really big chunks or little bits that have added up).23 -
My scale and I seem to be in a tug of war- I will lose 8 lbs and gain 6 back. I am not sure what is causing it. But I know my mind is feeling discouraged and I feel like I am letting everyone down (Even though I've lost over 250lbs since I started my journey 4.5 yrs ago). I came here to read some of the things that keep you all going when the scale becomes an enemy.
So I thought of 2 recent break throughs for me.
1. I was able to walk around the park without the use of my rollator. I would not have even attempted this a year ago. My knees buckle easily and once I've fallen, I need several people to safely help me back up.
2. I was going into the doctor's office and caught sight of someone in the shiny glass and had to back up, it was ME. I didn't recognize myself. (I avoid looking in mirrors, have done since I was a child unless it's simply a makeup mirror to do my hair).
That's all I've got for now. But it is enough. I can see the progress... but it's hard when you keep trying so hard but the weight just won't come off. Idk if I set my expectations too high, but my doctor wants me lose at least another 80lbs. And that seems so far away still. And I am going through menopause. Yeah, getting older is definitely not helping anything I guess.
Well, thanks for listening to my complaints and whining. I know I did this to myself but I am trying to take care of it myself too. I did not have bariatric surgery. I just felt if true change was going to happen, it needed to be on my own or I would think it a quick fix for bad choices I made all my life.40 -
Started back today after 14 months during which I gained 86#, mostly from stress eating. Just doing semi-well today is the only NSV I've had in over a year.

We are here to complain and whine and celebrate together, @ShatteredLady !! Thanks for sharing. you're doing amazing.
My scale is also being a jerk, though I have not come nearly so far as you have. I will gladly take the NSV of being able to run up the stairs and assist the CEO this morning when her key didn't work. Six months ago I would have had to go to a different part of the building to take the elevator to assist her!17 -
Kind of a scale victory but I have reached more than halfway now to my goal! Increased my elliptical today from 130 to 140 minutes. Got to 11 miles!22

Got my new pants in the mail today. They're size 34 and they fit! Going from a size 46 to 34 in a little less than a year just blows my mind. 😲42

I have actually started going back INTO grocery stores to do my shopping. I started the online/pick up a year ago and found it pretty helpful in keeping me away from impulse less than healthy purchases that I only wanted because they were there. And. the 'get what I want and get out' has stuck. Just with added label reading and looking for sale stickers.
That feels like a big win.28 -
My NSV today is that all of my clothes are far too big.
Everything down to my underwear 😁
It's getting expensive!
I don't want to spend a lot of money on a new wardrobe because I'm not at goal yet.
I might have a look around the charity shops this weekend to see if I can find some smaller bargains 😁

My nsv is that I caught myself using food and spending to comfort my anxiety. Focused on the positives in my life and the things that I can control like weighing and logging. This halts the weight gain and instills a sense of control and accomplishment. Read on here that obesity is considered a chronic, relapsing illness so do not want to slip into the mindset and habits that led to weight gain.18

Went to a work gathering today for happy hour (been working from home since March 2020). Although I was planning on only having one drink, I had two because it was so much fun catching up with everyone, I stayed longer than planned and it would have been rude to refuse. Although there were platters of yummy appetizers I didn't eat any and I still came in under my calorie goal for the day even with the second drink (yay for vodka & seltzer).23

I feel lighter on my feet. I walk a lot and yesterday I noticed that my feet and legs still felt good at the end of the day. I then focussed on on how my feet feel and realised that the soles of my feet didn’t feel as pressed into my shoes somehow - it’s hard to describe exactly, but I felt literally lighter on my feet 😂30

I developed a bit of a mobility issue with my left knee and IT band. Which I learned was due to lack of movement during lockdowns
As of last week I'm doing squats again. Yippee : )19 -
14 days in. My mom/carer noticed a difference when I took my sweater off for an injection in my arm. I thought she was lying. Didn't believe her at all.
A few hours later and right before I step into my shower, I look in the mirror (naked) to locate & take of the bandaid from the injection site. I turn to my side to see the place on my upper arm better, glance away from the bandaid as I take it off and 😳👀😱 there totally IS a difference. She wasn't being nice or lying. My upper back & shoulders look way more defined than before, less fat is there but you can see there's muscle development.
Naturally I talked myself into believing it was only bc my muscles where still sore and swollen from the workout I did that morning. So when I wake up in the morning I check again and omg. I can also see a difference in my jawline/second chin...
Didn't expect it at all but I'm so happy about having visual results already.28 -
Walked 4.2 miles today. Longest walk ever!30

Ssshhh literally was able ton got in my wife’s pants. I was like WTF!!! 🤣
Photos or it didn’t happen!
Seriously, best NSV I’ve seen and I’ve read every. last. one.
A year into maintenance, and I still have NSVs. I loved someone’s comment a week or so ago that it’s like being a baby and discovering your body!
My contributions:
1.) shaved under my arms and checked when I got out of the tub. I had “soul patches” under each. They sure are harder to get to, thinner!
2.) a lady stopped me after yoga yesterday and told
me “You have a beautiful practice”. That meant an awful lot to someone who couldn’t do many poses a couple years ago.
3.) walking home from yoga, some young dude leaned out a pickup passenger window and screamed “I love you!” Not sure how to take that, so I’ll enjoy it as a compliment.
4.) I’m trying to up my game dressing, outside my beloved crazy colored leggings, and as a result I’ve ordered smaller clothing even than what I’d been wearing. I’ve gotten dressed several times this week and been really pleased with what I saw in the mirror. I looked fashionable and unique, and everything fit like a glove. That hasn’t happened for many, many years.
I like me again, and I find myself walking around with a sloppy grin, and giving clerks and passerby’s the sunniest smiles I can.

I work in a factory as a sewing machine operator, and most of the people I work with are much smaller than I am. I've never been able to completely do up my work uniform as my hips were too wide, and it made me feel sloppy and less professional--but after 3 months of dieting I can do up all five snaps (and have them stay closed when I sit!) and it really makes me feel better. Now I'm looking forward to the day my uniform is too big!35

I bet that’s why the guy shouted ‘I Love You!’ to you. Your happiness is shining out and you are beautiful to behold 😊13 -
My NSV is that despite this month being a mess, with no time/motivation to workout or even track my calories...I am maintaining, not gaining!26
-
I did 151 minutes on my Elliptical today. Did an extra minute to achieve 12 miles!22

I noticed that I have lost enough weight that my stomach does not control how I walk anymore. I am still heavy and not even half way to my goal but I am nearly at 50# lost and I can feel it in how I walk and how I react to things that get in my way, or changes in direction etc.25

Forgot to wear a belt today to work and continually had to keep pulling my jeans up….luckily not a lot of people at the office soooo no one noticed BUT NSV for the win!!28

Kind of a scale victory: Went on vacation for a week. Traveled, no scale, did terrible at tracking calories due to eating out/ other people's cooking. Came home a pound lighter.
Victory #2: While on vacation, went on 4 mile walks with a relative most mornings, was able to keep up and continue being active the rest of the day.26 -

Interesting! I actually got jump started while on vacation this summer. Was in DC in August and used bikes to get around mostly. It was super hot and humid, and I was biking a lot. Got home and was 3 to 4 lbs lighter. Probably all water weight, but it felt good. I kept going and am 20 lbs down now. Funny how it can work out!17
