Style/Clothing changes since losing weight

Have you found that your wardrobe has changed a lot since losing weight? Do you wear different types of clothing, or find different styles more (or less) flattering than in the past?

I have definitely found this to be the case for me. Some of my go-to styles do not work for me anymore. For years, I was a big fan of cardigans (for example) but now find that they have to be a very specific type of fit to flatter my figure or I just look frumpy and larger than my size.

My shirts seem to graze the top of my hip now rather than the bottom. I have to be extra careful about necklines -- this is particularly true when I shop the smaller plus sizes as 90% of the time 1X shirts will have such a large or low cut V neckline that they show my entire bra, and therefore are totally out! XL is usually less of a problem, so that's good now that I am in L/XL.

Surprisingly I've embraced "skinny jeans", and find myself being slightly more casual than in the past (also partly due to buying new clothes while working in a business casual environment rather than professional dress required). Although I am very careful not to dress too young since I'm in my 30's, I do like to try a lot of trendier, younger styles than I may have gone for in the past. But never anything revealing or blatantly "teen"!

I still do not like heels! I don't think I ever will.

How has your style/wardrobe changed?

aw man...no responses? I am really interested in hearing how this stuff has changed for other women, whether a huge loss or just a couple of sizes.

If you are looking for responses from just the ladies then I apologize in advance, but I will weigh in. I used to wear XL shirts and could not tuck them in to satisfy my tastes, hated the large bulky shirts but it hid my belly. Now that my stomach is flat and I have lost 3 pant sizes, I wear pants that actually fit, my shirts are a medium now. I like how the sleeves fit my arms and chest, my wife has favored purchasing me v-neck shirts and form fitting button ups. My belt buckle sticks out past my stomach now instead of the reverse, LOL. It is also satisfying now that I dont have to pull a bunch of shirt out of my pants to feel comfortable, I can tuck my shirt in and nothing hangs over my beltline that I have to hide. Confidence and self image are much improved. I am also wearing more stylish jeans that flatter "things" as it were. Besides, I enjoy driving my wife crazy. :)
  • Not a woman, but I'll give you a response.

I hate..........hate men's shorts. They're too long. They have evolved to where they're more like pants that have shrunk rather than shorts. I like shorts that are short. When I was much heavier than I am now, I avoided shorts, now I look for and wear the shortest ones I can find. I've been told I have good looking legs, so.............why not?

    Ditto the above comments.

I used to wear polo shirts because the butttons would pucker on my button down shirts. Not any more. My button down shirts are TOO big so I'm getting smaller ones.

Oh no this is TOTALLY open to men too!! Thanks for responding :-)

My husband has lost weight too in the past several years and enjoys some of the same things you mentioned. Most of all, he has enjoyed dressing his age or younger. When he wore Big & Tall, he had to get a lot of business casual clothes in those stores and now he's free to wear whatever, including sports & skate brands that are a lot more current & modern looking for casual wear.

My wardrobe has definitely changed, and for the better! I tend to lean toward a modern 1950's style...if that makes sense...cigarette/slim leg pants, flirty skirts, TONS of heels. I also wear dresses all the damn time. I still find myself grabbing larger sizes and having to put them back in favor of something that *actually* fits. I am learning to appreciate the art of balancing proportions and having a lot of fun experimenting with different trends while trying to stay pretty and put-together.

That is kind of funny about the men's shorts! My husband is pretty tall and likes the current shorts lengths but I can definitely understand wanting shorter ones.

Although I'm female, I understand about the button down shirts. That is still kind of a difficult thing for me though...as soon as I find a button down shirt that fits me well, it gets too baggy and I'm off to find another.
  • I wear fewer suits since I find that the cuts rarely flatter me (broad shoulders and barrel chests do not look good in a suit unless its really really specifically tailored)

I wear more "fitted" or "slim fit" shirts. Ive also stopped wearing pants

I also wear brighter colors and find that I can get away with more patterns since Im not trying to "slim" my frame

The style you describe sounds VERY cute!! I'm imagining something like a modern Audrey Hepburn meets pinup girl.

I do the same thing with larger sizes, I think when you get used to always buying a certain size it is hard to get it through your head when that has changed!

pants = underwear? Sorry just trying to get it straight, maybe a language difference there!

I have to admit that I never followed "rules" about colors and patterns, even when I was much much larger. I just wore whatever I liked, lol. But that's good you're enjoying the variety more now!
  • lol.................underwear??? Something I stopped wearing beacuse of my weight. Much more comfortable sans undies. Now I rarely wear underwear.

I wear pretty much the same jeans and t shirts I always wore but I did invest in nicer lingerie. :)
I might wear more form fitting tops and shorter skirts more often but for the most part it's just what's under the clothes that have changed.

Yes! Forgot to mention that the lingerie has gotten an upgrade, too.

LOVING skinny jeans now..................! Before, stuck to mostly boot-cut....................

As far as shoes - I'm now a sneaker-hoarder...............! In the past two months I've bought 2 pairs of work-out sneakers - I'm talking top-of-the-line NICE work-out shoes.............!

    I'm spending more on work-out gear - I guess since I'm working out more - I want nicer/more 'stuff'.................!

I have only lost some of the weight but I already notice I wear less sweatshirts. My go-to has always been sweatshirts and jeans because of my huge spare tire. Now I feel more normal shaped and actually wear tshirts alone. I can't wait to lose the rest and see what I can wear!

Fashion is a big reason why I want to lose weight. For example, I wear only dresses or maybe skirts. Never pants. I feel there's just no way to make pants look okay on someone my size, while an A-line dress is the bee's knees if you will. Granted, I love retro/midcentury fashions, so once I lose the weight my style won't change. But I'll have so many more options! Like pants! :D

That being said, if anyone needs some good retro fashion advice, I am here to pass on my knowledge gained through wayyyyy too many paychecks sent off to eshakti, modcloth, rowena, pin up girl clothing ... and so many others.

Two of the biggest for me are I tuck in my shirts and wear short or sleeveless tops, something I didn't do before. I'm wearing the same type of jeans just 4 sizes smaller, cause I have them in all sizes LOL. I did buy a pair of size 8 skinny jeans that fit but not comfortable enough to wear all day. The other day I actually went into a store in my danskin exercise capris and my 14 year old remarked she was shocked LOL Now if I can find shorts I like, seems they are either to the knee or too short. I'm in my 50s so too short doesn't cut it for me.

seltzermint - BTW 30s is young, I see you comment quite a bit that you are "older", honey that isn't even middle age, let alone "older" :flowerforyou:

I've bought a couple of pairs of skinny jeans and am not scared to wear them.
I tuck in my shirts now - before I would never do that!

I switched from wearing things a little oversized to wearing things that actually fit me. I have never been huge, but as I guy, I get that really big protruding gut being just a couple pounds over. So just an oversized T-shirt or such could cover it for the most part.

Now that it's mostly gone, I wanna show everyone that I'm not that big. Sadly, that means I had to raid my kids' closet for pants... and I need new shirts. I am being conservative though because I'd still like to lose a little more.

My goal used to be to camouflage my flaws to the best of my ability. This meant leggings under dresses, a cardigan over everything, and a shapewear tank under all my shirts.

The biggest thing I noticed is that now I dress in a single layer. Just a tee-shirt will do, where before it was a tank, a tee-shirt and a cardigan.

This year (I'm 4 years into this) I will even wear belly baring styles when appropriate. Feels good!

I used to wear more feminine styles, like skirts that fit on your hips and then flare out, about mid-calf length. Now I have hips like a 12-year-old boy, so they just look odd! But I wear a lot of stretchy fine-knit wool dresses in the winter, no problem with clingy clothes at all now.

Absolutely! First, nothing fit me for ages so my teenage daughter (19) brought down jeans, yoga pants and shirts for me to wear. I just went shopping for some summer clothes for myself and all my shorts were much shorter than I would normally go for and my tops are form fitting now. Oh, and I'm finally brave enough to wear a bikini!!

When I went from fat to skinny, I was totally into skinny jeans and slim-fitting shirts, etc.

Now that I'm going from skinny to fit, I find that nothing fits my thighs and butt appropriately. So it's skirts and dresses most of the time now.

I would love to have a stylist work with me to determine what looks good on my new frame. Maybe one-a these days...come on, Lotto!

My style hasn't changed too dramatically but I am trying to dress things up a bit more. Before I mostly wore knit tops (if you ever shopped Fashion Bug you know what I'm talking about) and now I mix it up with more prints, shorter sleeves, cute little embellishments like scallops and lace and such. The rest of my wardrobe is still mostly jeans, t-shirts and sneakers.

Shorts still feel weird to me (capris are more my thing) but I did manage to buy a jean skirt that I plan to wear this summer so that's a step in the right direction. :)

Oh and I don't like heels either - at least not tall spindly ones - I can manage a 1-2 inch heel as long as it's chunky. I'm so looking forward to showing off colorful toes in my cute sandels as soon as it warms up a bit more!

P.S. I also used to love me those boot cuts and now have mostly skinny jeans in my collection.

Definitely had a style change. I feel a lot more adventurous! Today I'm wearing printed pants that are just so fun. I never would have considered them before because they draw all sorts of attention to my lower half, which I was always so embarrassed by. Now I'm more evenly proportioned so it doesn't matter. Plus I have recently decided to stop hating my legs, they'll never be "perfect" but they're the only legs I got and they can do amazing things now :) So because of that I'm more willing to wear shorts and dresses. Life is just too short to not wear fun stuff!

My clothing choices have definitely changed. I was a size 22/24 and 5'4 so it was sometimes pretty challenging to find anything that would actually fit me at all. Now I can walk into a petites section in almost any store and find stuff to wear. I'm not using clothing to hide my body anymore either.
I used to wear lots of black, loose-fitting clothing. Now I wear brightly colored tops, polka dots, stripes, and skinny jeans. I love dresses now, especially halter style ones.
I avoid loose fitting tops, mostly because I spent most of my life hiding in them.

Big time style changes. I went from very neutral to colorful, from long skirts and baggy jeans to dresses, a dab of lipstick to full makeup occasionally including false eye lashes. Even shoes, nails and handbags have had style changes.
