...for that special kind of body-shaming that MFP does so well.
Off topic - but when that cat goes ninja on them, there will be no survivors.
If I know Jof, his reaction will be similar, which is why I take comfort in knowing that I was all-state on my high school's hide and seek team.
LOL I saw it. you win.

Why are people celebrating a girl purely because she has a less conditioned physique in a competition where the physique is a major criteria?
It's insane. It'd be like congratulating a bodybuilder for coming in soft because the insecure guys out there can more easily relate. Sure, these pageants are also about other things besides the body...but these people are not ever mentioning those attributes so it's an irrelevant point.0 -

all agree that this is just another ridiculous example of the exploitation of the female form?
Oops. Reality check.
I don't know if they'll all agree, but I do.
But alas. Here's some science. What a wet blanket.
"When it comes to sexuality and mating, evolutionary psychologists say, men and women often are as different psychologically as they are physically. Scientists have long known that people typically choose mates who closely resemble themselves in terms of weight, height, intelligence and even earlobe length. But a survey of more than 10,000 people in 37 cultures on six continents, conducted by University of Michigan psychologist David Buss, reveals that men consistently value physical attractiveness and youth in a mate more than women do; women. equally as consistently are more concerned than men with a prospective mate’s ambition, status and resources. If such preferences were merely arbitrary products of culture, says Buss, one might expect to find at least one society somewhere where men’s and women’s mating preferences were reversed; the fact that attitudes are uniform across cultures suggests they are a fundamental part of human psychology."
The above is from an article entitled Your Cave or Mine? By William F. Allman (San Francisco Chronicle THIS WORLD section, July 25, 1993, p. 8-10)
Sit back and listen to this crazy, radical plan of mine.
How about we start honoring women for something besides looking attractive to men?
What if we started holding pageants that rewarded real achievement? What's her talent? She's a chemist, and one of the best in the country. So no, she never really took the time to learn baton twirling.
What if there was no bikini competition? Because you had a group of smart women with self-respect who wanted no part of being judged solely for their looks, and paraded out like sides of beef.
What if we treated women...like people?
(and you thought you were the wet blanket)

Yup, as suspected, they all look "normal" to me.
None of these ladies looks like "a bag of bones" to me. They all look beautiful.0 -
she looks good of course, but ya definitely not 119 pounds, she looks like she has some muscle. I'm 5'6" and at 119 I looked smaller than her and was smaller than a size 4.0

yes. I am barely 25. Just look old, thanks to my balding genes and too much sun0 -

You are the worst troll on this site. my age changes when I have a birthday, of which I've had two since I first came to MFP0 -

I also see his point. I do think she is beautiful and that the standards for these contests are completely absurd, but she did consent to this physical scrutiny knowing full well that this could happen.0 -
OMG THIS THIS THIS THIS. THIS!0 -
First of all she's gorgeous I wish I was "normal" like her. I heard a report that she is 5'8" 132 size 4 but the average (normal??) American woman is 5'5" 165 and a size 14. This is one screwed up view on our bodies no wonder we have body issues.0

In a nutshell, Mekayla Diehl didn't win, but she's getting a lot of attention because she's not exactly your typical super-thin Miss USA contestant.
Well, I think that's great that they had a girl up there that isn't a "bag of bones" and I think she looks great, but the thing that got me was the article's claim that Mekayla has a BMI of 18, making her far from "normal" or "average." As the article says, she's 5'8", meaning that she'd have to be about 119 lbs to have a BMI of 18. They say she wears a size 4, which I believe because my body doesn't look all that different from hers and I wear a size 4 (sometimes), but she's definitely not 119 lbs.
Thoughts?
She weighs 135lbs0 -

It's funny how being very attractive seems to upset people far more than being very intelligent. Here's to awarding Nobel Prizes to "normal" people with "real" brains rather than all the Smarty McSmarty Pants. Seriously, let people compete with what they have.0 -

not because you're a favourite but I have to agree with you on here... she does have a fuller physique were clearly aesthetics are important...0 -
imagine if I made that statement though? hahahah0
-
They act like they've never seen a woman with abs before.0
-
I don't think she is 119 lbs if she is really 5'8". More like 130-140 lbs, but she looks really good!! She looks like she is at a good weight for her height.0
-
I am pretty sure that these contests are just demeaning in general and shouldn't happen. They make women compare themselves to other women and cause people to just hate themselves.0

I agree with that SonofaBeach.
There is great power in beauty.
It is so demonized in the name of politics.
It is a feminine mystery, and opens doors that wouldn't have otherwise opened, both metaphorically and literally.0 -

Don't forget, those girls were born with those bodies.
I'm sure each and every one of them have committed countless hours and effort into a stunning physical display.
It shows that they can commit long-term and practice self-control.0 -
She is absolutely stunning but far from "normal". She is still thin in the grand scheme of things. The "normal" (average) American woman is 5'3", 150ish lbs, and a size 10-14. She is 5'8", size 4, and about 18-20 BMI. No norm here (Woody, however...).0

Does she have eyeballs?
I don't see no eyeballs.0
