Just wanted to check and see if anyone of you all will be at the Hotter N' Hell 100 this weekend in Wichita Falls, TX?
Wish I could but about 8 states away. Best of luck though! Let us know how it goes.
Well, it was hotter than hell. I think it got up to 105 or something. It was 101 when I crossed the finish line. Finished the event in right around 5.5 hours for moving time. 6.5 actual time I think. 100.89 miles with a 17.9mph average. The goal was 18mph and I knew I didn't get it, but didn't think I was that close. Honestly thought I would be high 16s or low 17s because we had a 10-15 mph with 20-25mph gust for most of the last 30 miles. It was pretty brutal. Glad I did it though.
Wow. Congratulations!0 -

Amazing! Way to go Hornsby! That is a great time for some difficult circumstances. The wind is frequently my nemesis, so overcoming that headwind into the finish line is impressive.
I see some of you guys (implied guys and girls - no sexism here) putting up some incredible numbers (over 400 and up to 1k) in a month. How do you do that and not have muscle fatigue set in? I'm at 323 / 30 (miles riding / miles running) and find it pretty taxing with a 6 or 7 day a week schedule. Is it just a matter of diet and conditioning?
At any rate, I great to see so many people actually hanging in there regardless of the goal set. We are all at different places along the fitness scale.0 -

Sparkydog
I am retired, so I have all the time in the world to bike every day. When I started I increased my mileage by a few miles every day. Now my body is so conditioned to it, that forty miles feels like something I have to do in order to feel like I did some biking.
Unfortunately it is very hot where I live in summer, so I cannot bike longer due to the heat. I am trying to get faster, but am not very successful with it. I am faster in the cooler season though, just at 100 degree and more I do not feel like pushing it. I will probably never get close to those on these thread who are considerably younger, but I can get better.0 -

Congrats! That sounds like a great pace for such a long distance in the heat. Were you able to draft of friends/people or was it all solo riding like tri/time trials? How much climbing was there in the ride?0 -

I have tired riding everyday but found my legs were not able to recover between rides (even if some were slow/easy) so this month when I am trying to rack up lots of miles I am making sure to have a day or two between rides to recover and just go on longer rides when I do go out. I am also going at an easy(slow) pace. For me a fast 20 mile ride can be as tiring as a slow 60 mile ride.0 -

Average speed and climbing is approximate as my Garmin cyclometer started malfunctioning at mile 75 (within 2 miles of where my derailer broke last week) so I started running strava on my phone but the battery died before I made it home.

You were able to draft a bit for the first 50 or so miles. After that everyone was too scattered. You were lucky to find 3 or 4 people to pace with. Most didn't really know how to ride in groups. The last 30 into the wind on this one was 90% on my own, and the few groups I was in, I did most of the work anyway. This ride is known for being a flat, windy, hot ride out here. Not a lot of climbing. I think it was 1900 feet in total.
Here is the start line. 13,000 riders willing to do this to themselves.....lol.0 -
August goal: 300 miles
8-1: 2.80 miles - test ride near bike mechanic
8-2: 61.8 miles - first metric century!
8-3: 5.50 miles
8-5: 26.7 miles
8-6: 15.4 miles
8-7: 22.0 miles
8-11: 22.6 miles
8-16: 71.8 miles
8-19: 10.9 miles
8-20: 16.2 miles - with a nasty crash - out for a few days.
8-25: easy 5 miles with the wife
Total: 260.7 miles0 -
Goal for August will be 250 and I will go for it!
8/20 - 4.7
8/23 - 36.1
8/24 - 5.5
Total so far 46.3
Has been another bad biking month.0 -
Hornsby, great ride & thanx for posting the pic!0
