ubuntu's pretty cool cp. Not bad for a light system. Does a great job with vmware server. I have that with a windows server 2003 running my web environment, and it does a great job. You'd never know it was a virtual if you didn't look.

as for a gaming rig, for 2500 bucks I could build you a machine that would rule the world.

    I'd do this:

AMD Phenom X4 9850 CPU ( you can overclock it if you like, but it's already a mamoth CPU)
    ASUS M3A32-MVP Delux motherboard
    4 GB (2X 2GB) GSkill 1066 RAM
    Nasty Coolmaster heat synch
    Roswell 1000 W power
Some nasty $150 case with some extra fans
    2 750 GB SATA 3 HD's Mirrored
    DVD RW with lightscribe
if I have extra money (I will) Blue RAY player
Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer 7.1 Sound card
Dual Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX SLI video cards

    Total cost - 2400 bucks.

that's without a monitor. But you could skimp on a few things and get away under 2000 and get a $400 24 inch wide screen LCD monitor too.

    i work for ubisoft :P

You'll find my photo's ALL over a map in rainbowsix vegas two (in one of the casino's), they are like huge glowing stained glass pannels that line all the walls and they break when you shoot them.
I don't play so much though...after a day spent making them, i feel the need to do something else more...physical in the evening.

Ahahaa, that rocks so hard. I love some Vegas 2 (just got Warrant Officer), so I'm definately gonna have to look for your pics.

I used to be a huge AMD fan, but eventually I was seduced away by Intel. I love my new system though, good lord it's a beast.

LOL! That sounds pretty kickass. Hubby used to be into PC gaming, but he eventually got sick of rebuilding his system all the time and having conflicts when he upgraded parts.

I'm kind of anti-VMWare, though - the one time I had to run RHEL in a ESX environment I had a hella time getting it stable. But that was a couple years ago now. Just starting to play around with Xen - fun stuff.

The thing I've been meaning to do FOREVER is built a MythTV box for recording TV... I just never get around to figuring out what sort of parts I want to use!

I hear ya, the Quad cores were good. But the new Phenom is an *kitten* kicker, it will win you back if you check it out.

Haven't tried Xen, but I'm a big open source fan. I'm just curious about the driver set with it. You have to rely on ppl who wrote their own drivers, and today, with all the complex hardware out there, that can be a little scarey.

That would be quite a Machine Banks!

You like the AMD over the Pentium?

Have you looked at the Solid State HDs?

Well, the Athlons were getting a little long in the tooth, and for a while I liked the quad cores, but the Phenoms outperform them in every category, take less power, and run cooler, so yeah, I'm back with the AMD bandwagon.

Solid state's not big enough for me yet. good for the OS if you like that though. Faster at least, but lots of dough.

Dude, solid state is the freakin BOMB. Too bad they are 600 dollars more expensive than equivalent 10k raptor drives.

I LOVE the VMWare... for classrooms, servers, training, testing patches and HoneyPots! Before HoneyPots popular, I created a mousetraps for bad behavior on networks. I wanted to have an unpatched VM machine on the network that would catch viruses. I would monitor the traffic going to it with Ethereal (Wireshark). Each time the machine receive traffic other than ARP and other broadcasts, I knew I had a problem since it wasnt on the domain. Worked like a champ to catch machines that were infected and not part of the domain or were, but didnt get the GPO!

Were getting ready to buy SSD HDs for some of our VMWare Servers. I am excited to find out the side by side performance comparison. We use software to create fake traffic called MUTS - MultiUser Traffic System and will see how many more user a Dell 2950 can support with SSD vice 10K RPM HDs in RAID 5.

If only I had the time, with over 100 production servers, and about 200 more for back end and dev machines, I just can't monitor any. Especially with all the SQL stuff I take care of, people like to *kitten* with my SQL servers. One day I'm just gonna snap and start cyber bombing people who denormalize my DB servers!

Single SSD vs a RAID 5 with what? 4 drives? Probably pretty close for read, write will probably be faster with the SSD. But if you RAID 50 everything, it will be faster then a single SSD. Course you could always put it all on a ISCSI san and get even FASTER performance. Plus, if you're looking for speed, why not go with 15K RPM in RAID 50 that is even faster. But one question, DELL? for RAID? Yikes! that's painful. HP and IBM both have much better storage tech.
