    Oh, I love to hike!!!

I live in CO and do 99% of my hiking in the Rocky Mountains.

Please let me know if you get a hiking group started here.

If you are interested in a hiking group from the Denver/burbs area, let me know! We have a social group that goes a out a lot during the summer and every once in awhile during the winter.

I love to hike anywhere! But since I live in Colorado, it's Rocky Mountains for me. I'm all about the 14ers, though, I got HOOKED on them last summer. I did 2, and have plans to hopefully at least double that this summer.

(Poll) Have you ever hiked in the snow?
Thought I was going to tomorrow, but not w/ this thaw in the NE. It's so warm I half expect to hear the ice cream trucks out!

I know!! It was 58 this morning. Granted it's dropping back down throughout the day to the 30s....but still. Wanted to put on a skirt and flip flops then play hookie.

The ice cream trucks were out here last weekend. It was such a nice sound to hear while I was actually getting to sit outside and read. It has been a perfect week here, supposed to be 71 today!

I love photographing landscapes, plants, buildings, animals, and kids. I would really like to learn how to photograph birds in the wild. So far I just manage to scare them off with my big clumsy footsteps. There's a beautiful Great Blue Heron living in a field near me and he is NOT cool with me coming anywhere near him.

PirateNinja - Birds are really fun aren't they? But, yes, difficult at times. I work at a fish hatchery on a wildlife refuge. We have a small half acre fishing pond that birds flock to, especially in the winter. This morning there were 2 trumpeter swans and a ton of ducks (bufflehead, goldeneye, etc). We have several Great Blues that like to eat our fish :explode:. We also have bald eagles, golden eagles, osprey, redtail hawks, marsh hawks, sandhill cranes and the occasional owl that screeches at night. I've really gotten into birding since moving here! I don't really mind all the big game around either. Moose are my favorite

Knew I started this thread for a reason. Love abandoned buildings, particularly the old wood ones that have the greying wood. Will have to keep my eyes open and my camera handy. Never know when/where you may see one.

Would like to go Hike Zion nation park and the Narrows in Utah !!

One of my favorite places in Utah is The Canyonlands (south). You can really get back in there, and the photography options are endless if you like reflections, red rock, desert plants, etc.

It's so funny, I was never into bird watching before I moved to our current home and started hiking. The hawks are what really got me interested, though. Herons are pretty incredible, too.

Your refuge sound AMAZING! I would love to see eagles and moose in the wild. I actually just started thinking about going on a trip to Glacier National Park in Montana...or to Alaska. Do you have any places you think would be good to visit? I want to do a lot of hiking, bird watching, kayaking, painting, and of course taking pictures.

We call it spring mountaineering here since the snow up high sticks around until July. Slap on some crampons, grab an ice axe and head up the mountain. We attempted to summit the Middle Teton a few summers ago, and even though we started at 5am we were only at the saddle between the Middle and South by 11am. So we stopped for lunch and my husband proposed! He dropped on one knee still wearing crampons on his boots! I have a picture of the spot somewhere. I don't know how to post pictures on threads? Anyone? The best part about hiking in snow is that if it's steep enough you get to slide down on your behind!

I haven't been to Glacier since I was little, but you can certainly do all of those things here in Jackson Hole! It's quite amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed my Alaska trip as well. They are all beautiful.

Think one of my favorite (and scariest parts) of when I was in Alaska is you can pretty much go out anywhere and see at least 3 different uncommon (although common in AK) animals.

A few of my hikes I saw moose, foxes, and bears. One time we were hiking at the nature center and came across two bear cubs... I was scared to death. Didn't know where the mom was and mama bears are VICIOUS when they thing something threatens their cubs.

Looking back though, ALMOST wish I had my camera and the balls to hang around to take a pic.

DJH - That reminds me of a backpacking trip when we had a little yearling black bear wander towards our site while we were eating dinner. We put the food away but he kept coming, so we pulled out knives and bear spray. We wanted to chase him away, so my friend walked towards the trees with bear spray in one hand and his camera in the other!

Decided to go for it and buy a digital SLR with either my tax money or a bonus I'm getting in March, whichever comes first.   I can't wait! I've been putting it off for years because I just haven't been taking many pictures at all, but I seem to have found a renewed love for photography (thanks, D) and I can't wait to really get back into it.

I know you are all photo buffs, but just in case you haven't seen Abelardo Morell's kickass work:

    http://www.abelardomorell.net/photography/cameraobsc_01/cameraobsc_24.html

He set up room-scaled camera obscura!

Edited: 'room-scaled camera obscura!' is redundant  meant to say 'room-sized pinhole camera'!!

Wow loopy. Those are beautiful. I had to make a pinhole camera in high school and then again in art school. It's such a fun way to play around with photography.

Going on my second hike with my group this coming weekend. Think it's only going to be a 4 or 5 miler, but it'll still be nice to get outside for a bit in new surroundings.

Be more fun when you get your new camera.

As soon as the weather warms up I'll be hiking feather falls again... maybe this time with my new camera. Debating on taking my oldest out with me again or not. Was killer on my knees last time. Definately need to invest in some decent hiking boots this time.

I live in the Northern Shenandoah Valley (VA) so hiking is at my finger tips at all times, but I love the trails in GW National Forest the best - free with beautiful overlooks. I also love Harpers Ferry WV.

*jealous* I have to drive over an hour to get minimal hills at best. Lol. I want to do some overnight trips soon down to Monongahela and Seneca rocks/Spruce Knob in WV.
