See I've been wondering about this. The machine does yell at me when I go above 130 bpm but OMG that is SO SLOW. I literally don't go above 2.0-3.0mph when I am in the "fat burning zone" according to the machine. I don't break a sweat or get out of breath at all, HOW is that working me out? 155 is supposed to be my "endurance training zone" which I've read means that I am burning more calories and 50% of them are fat calories, and even that is hard to stay under. I just hate feeling like I am not doing anything. I work out usually on an empty stomach, (right when I wake up) I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not? Honestly, if I am doing myself a disservice, I'd like to know so any info is great! Maybe I'll ask my trainer about it tomorrow as well.

You are right, it DOES feel slow, but it is MORE effective at burning fat. In the fat burn zone you are burning something like 85% fat. THAT is what you want to do, right? Lose fat? Well, that's MY goal anyway!! If you are in the cardio training zone you are burning something like 85% carbs, 5% fat... and whatever else. I don't know the EXACT percentages, but these are pretty close.

But if I were you, I would talk to your trainer about it. It will probably be explained better!!

Everyone has different goals and while I want to burn fat but I also want to improve cardiovascular endurance- this is very important for me and a low and slow work out is not going to do that as effectively thus I have a mix of workouts- on weekdays I have shorter, more intense workouts which are for cardiovascular enduranve (30-45 minutes at 80-85%)

on weekends 2 hour workouts with heart rate of 55-65%

also even in your more intense workouts you are still burning fat

    think of it this way

you work out 30 minutes walking 3mph and burn 219 cals (that's the calculation form me on MFP) 65% of those calories are from fat or 142 fat calories burned

or you work out 30 minutes walking 4.5 mph and burn 418 cals (again from MFP based on my weight) but in this case only 30% are from fat butthat's still 125 als from fat burned - plus cardiovascular endurance improvement and more overall calories and a higher metabolism for the next 5-6 hours afterwars (any exercise will temporarily boost your metabolism but higher intensities are supposed to boost it more)

thus the reason why I mix it up- I want to burn as much fat as possible but for cv endurance improvement an intense workout can't be beat

Putting ice on it 15 minutes every hour.. ugh.. and im on some meds.. hoping it heals fast.. I think my meds are kicking in.. yay.. :) Hoping the inflammation goes down soon..

April, I hope your knee heals quickly! I realized this week with my back/hip injury that it really sucks the life out of you when you can't move!!! Never thought about it before, but sitting around for three days really got me down! I was feeling better today, so I went to the gym and hit the treadmill. First mile was pretty good, so I picked up the pace. By the end of mile two I was a little sore, so I walked for a few minutes, then picked up the pace again. Finished that third mile and called it quits. Just wasn't comfortable and didn't want to aggravate the injury. So I stretched as good as I could and called it a day. Afterward I ran errands all day and felt fine, but I'm glad I didn't push too hard. I'm hoping by Saturday I'll be up to running another 6-7 miles, but if I have to stop I will. I think I'm not as young as I thought I was!!!!

Speaking of which... my boys had birthdays yesterday and today (three years and one day, I'm consistent!). Hubby got to be home with us tonight. My co-worker friend had her baby on Tuesday. A college friend had a baby on Monday. Those are my happies and my "holy moly I feel old"'s for the day.

    aprildauer, WTG rocking the workouts!

Nikstergirl, owies on the back/hip. I'm glad you decided to cut out on your workout early...even though you felt fine later, who knows what kind of pain you'd be in if you kept running.

My Thursday happy list: I made my first Lush Line glass tonight, my puppies have been on good behavior today, and I was a good girl and didn't do any online shopping like I was tempted to.

Ouch April! Is your knee swollen and bruised? Can you get into a doc/urgent care to make sure it isn't something more serious?

Its a little swollen.. I can get into one, but im affraid they will take me off work.. and i cant afford it financially right now.. im sure it will be back to normal in a day or so.. im going to take a bath in Epsom salt.

OK, but promise me that if your knee is still hurting in a few days that you go see a pro?

Ladybu, wow you have been busy! Sorry your daughter is having a rough time at school. Mean kids are just the worst. Hope your court date, and finding a new place to live, both go smoothly!

    My Wednesday dose of happy:
-it is a wonderfully rainy day again
-I got a sample package in the mail (tampons, pads, and deodorant...yeehaw! ). I love getting free samples!
-I'm doing virtual window shopping on two of my favorite sites and finding TONS of cute things (bravissimo.com - they have a new clothing line, and yandy.com - they just put a ton of lingerie and costumes on 50% off clearance...early Halloween costume shopping anyone?

April- I hope that knee is doing better - remember RICE (Rest Ice Compression and Elevation)

Ladybu- I hope things start settling down for you!

Pink- I love fee samples too though we don't get them much in Belgium- I used to belong to the website freesamples.com (this is around 2000-2001 so not sure if they still exist) - everyday they had different free sample offers, you can (could) choose one a day and they would send it to you along with coupons they also had links to other webistes - which is how I found Pogo- a games website- which is actually how I found my husband - as we met online at Pogo playing backgammon!- so you see I too LOVE free samples :flowerforyou:

Jen, what a great story about how you and your hubby met!!!

Pinky, great going on no online shopping. I've been really good about not caving myself. One of the sample sale sites I'm on (Rue La La) had a Spanx sale yesterday and I looked but didn't purchase. I have way too many Spanx items now.

Today's happy: it's Friday and the sun is out - even if it's only 30-some-odd degrees out and even if it's going to snow tomorrow. That's the beauty of nature. Have a great day!!

FINALLY I am seeing some results from my hard work! (Well, renewed results from renewed motivation and work, anyway.) Weigh in today showed me down to 231.2 - so that's the 7lbs I had gained PLUS another .8! YAY! This is very encouraging to me and now I can't wait to get back into the gym. I talked to my trainer about my work outs and heart rate, and she said that I am OK in the 165 range. What she wants me to do is focus on incline and resistance, so go about a level 4 or 5 for 5-10 minutes, then up it to 6 for another 5-10, then back down to 1-2 for another 5 minutes and concentrate on speed during that time. It's been fun to see myself push so hard and go so fast! Getting officially weighed and measured this afternoon with the trainer, we'll see how far I've come in the past 11 days.

I am SO looking forward to the weekend. It couldn't come fast enough!

April - I hope that knee is feeling better today!

I just figured that since I'm so far behind on the walking challenge, that I need to get in 1 hour a day 6 days a week at the pace I walk my dog in order to come close to it for the rest of the challenge....I'm so ready to do that....but that's a whole lotta walking....although tomorrow I plan on doing about 4 hours around the cottage life show at a slower pace...that should be okay. I'll probably still come back and walk the dogs for an hour. I can do this!!! Have you figured out how much more you have to do to meet the 100 mile challenge?

April - I'm glad you got your knee checked out. Are you feeling any better now?

Pink - I have NOT been abstaining from online shopping and I've been a bad girl! I bought some basics at old navy so I'd have some tank tops to layer, and then they had a cute trench coat on sale from $60 to $25...how could I resist? I have a bit of a thing for trench coats in the spring :)

Ashley - congratulations on your results! That hard work is paying off!

bjshooter - we all have bad days, and weeks, and it sounds like you're getting back on track. I'm sorry you have had a tough time lately and I hope things are looking up soon.

In my world, my little non-scale victory is that I managed to work out every day this week, despite a crazy work week and a more than usually demanding schedule. I feel pretty good about that!

Just do your best and you will succeed- those dogs are going to love those long walks!!!

I just walked a bit over 10k (10.45 k actually) I am very very very slow- but I did it- no off to eat a turkey sandwich and shower - have a great saturday everyone!

I'm back home from being gone all week. I was SO afraid to step on the scales. My moms a great cook. I tried to be very careful though.

I weighed this morning and was only up .4lbs, so I was quite happy. My official weigh in is Monday, so I hope to be at least down to where I was by then.

    Have a great weekend!!! :flowerforyou:

Hello ladies!!! I am so thankful that I took a couple days off this week to heal up, my back/hip is feeling tons better! I was able to do my seven miles run this morning!!!! Then I went shopping with a friend for two hours... which was awesome! I love fitting in a new size... what a great feeling.

    My happies for today are:
    1) My back is better and I can run again.
    2) I got to hold my friends brand new baby today for like a half hour!!!!
    3) All the clothes I bought today were a smaller size than I've ever bought before!!! Size medium feels REALLY amazing!!! I'm tossing all my XL's... seriously! Donation bin, here they come!

Just popping in to say hello :flowerforyou:
I am soooo busy right now, I am tracking my calories but having to cut back a lot on internet time.
My first half marathon is in 2 weeks time ........ yikes ....... then my first triathlon is 8 weeks after that
April, you put so much effort into the weekly challenges, I am sorry but the only one I have been following for the last 2 weeks is the 100 mile one. And I have just over 30 miles to go, woohoo!
My weight loss has stopped but I'm ok with that, I am losing inches so no worries!
    Hope everyone is doing ok,
    Casey

Casey, good luck on your race!! I know you'll do great with all the training you've been doing!!!

I had a pretty good weekend. Had a nice workout this afternoon at the gym, I think lots of people in my town agree that Sunday afternoons are great times to hit the gym... there were so many people there! But it was great, I did exactly what I wanted and never had to wait for a machine, so I'm a happy girl!

Hope you all had a nice weekend. I didn't see a big loss this week, but I'm ok with that. Getting closer all the time, and it's almost time to update my goal weight. I had it set for 140 just to see if I could get there, but now I'm thinking it really should be between 130-135 (I'm 5'2") to get my BMI where it should be... just not sure if I want to change that just yet because it looks nice to see "14 pounds to go" instead of "24 pounds to go!!" Just a mental thing at this point.

Hoping it warms up this week, I have a very busy week planned.. and need to run outside to relieve some stress!!!!

I changed mine last week, I went from 60 - 70lb, It actually made me more determined. I originally wanted to be 135, but I totally think I can make 125lb now.
