Teachers or Future Teachers

Options
Hi,

I wanted to start a group for teachers for the 2011-2012 school year. School is getting ready to start and we all know how hard it is to stay away from the daily treats in the lounge or the greasy faculty lunch spread. I would like for this group to be all about motivation and support. It would be nice to share ideas, thoughts, or just general gripes with people who understand the profession. We can also start exercise programs together. If you would like to join, tell a little bit about yourself including general background, teaching background, area of expertise, weight loss goals, and what you would like to get out of this group. Thanks!

Hi there! I'm 28 years old, and I'm from Ontario, Canada. I teach gr. 5/6 (this will be my second year in this grade), and I LOVE it! Prior to this, I taught gr. 7/8 for a year, and gr. 6 for the year before that, and supply taught and had a gr. 2/3 LTO the year before THAT. So I guess I'm going into my fifth year of teaching! I can hardly believe it!

I work in a school that is located in an area with a very low socio-economic status, so it's a very challenging environment, and I LOVE it! I'm not in "back to school" mode yet, because for most of the month of July I took my health and phys. ed. specialist course, so I was busy going to class, and doing online assignments! I feel like I haven't had much of a holiday yet, so I'm happy that August is here!

This is an idea I love. When a new teacher is hired at my school, it is always joked that he/she will have to gain weight to fit in. There is always food (at meetings and such) and it is always cheap and usually fried! Sad, but true.

I am 39 and don't want to be fat at 40. This morning I weigh 260 (down 18). My goal is to get to around 150, although I have no memory of being below 180.

I teach electrical technology at a local community college. This coming school year will be my 13th. Before that I worked in industry as an electronics/automation technician.

I think that non-teachers don't realize the unique stress of teaching. Most think, it is an 8-3 job that we can leave at the office. NOT SO! So it will be nice to have other teachers to de-stress and/or celebrate victories with!

I am an elementary school teacher and literacy specialist. This year (and possibly next) I will be working as a master teacher; coaching, training, and modeling best-practices in literacy for a range of age-groups. Pretty cushy by teacher standards, but you should know that I am already itching to get back in my OWN classroom.

My long-term goal is to be able to cross my legs and leave them there without doing isometric exercises to hold them in place. I don't know what weight that will be, but I'll let you know when I get there. I lost some weight before joining MFP on 5/31/2011, but I'm hoping that by the New Year my MFP ticker will say more than 50 pounds lost.

I'm a UK maths teacher and my faculty room is a nightmare. There is ALWAYS biscuits in the jar and cakes or pastries on the side. My A-level students constantly bring in cakes and goodies to share with the class and it's always so hard to turn their kind offers down

It doesn't help that the other teachers in the faculty seem to be able to eat anything, do no exercise and yet still not put on a pound :0(

Dreading the thought that all my good work over the summer holidays is going to go down the drain. No working 12 hours at school then doing the hour drive home and collapsing. Must keep on working out!

Need some accountability for my actions to ensure that I keep this up!

PS: Can anyone tell me why I'm STARVING come 11am during term time, but in the holidays I can eat the same breakfast, do a three hour work out and not want to eat until lunchtime?!? Grrr

I think this is a fantastic idea! I work as a Pre K Counts teacher for the Community Action Partnership in my county. I'm certified in Elementary Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), and will obtain my Early Childhood Certification by the end of this year. I currently weight 175 pounds. My short term goals is to lose 5 lbs a month every month before my 31st birthday, by doing that I will 20 lbs lighter by my next birthday! Once I accomplish that goal I want to start working on getting back down to my ideal weight 125 or less (which I was was until a few years ago when married life took it's toll and then baby weight). I'm hoping this group will help keep me motivated when I feel like I have no time or energy to get a workout it (btwn working full time, being a single mommy, and taking my final grad class). I'm really looking forward to this group because I have some serious anxiety about losing control of my eating and motivation to workout once school start - I got back to work on Friday! AHHH!

I LOVE this idea! My name is Kimberly. I'm 30 years old and a high school English teacher. Next year will be my 6th year of teaching (hard to believe it's been that long). I have lost 14 lbs so far and I have another 50 or so to go. I'm a bit nervous about school starting back because I started MFP and my healthier lifestyle at the beginning of summer. This meant, of course, that I could exercise whenever I want in the middle of the day and that I have plenty energy. This won't be the case when I start back with school next week. It's going to take a lot more motivation, and energy to get up early to exercise and I will have to plan my meals. We can do this together, though! Feel free to add me, my fellow teachers :flowerforyou: . I am so excited about this group!

Hi guys! My name is Terrie. I am 23 years old and in my second year of teaching fifth grade. We have a couple teachers at my school who are doing weight watchers and they tried to have meetings start at our school, but there wasn't enough interest. It seems like the entire county I work in is overweight so there is a constant flow of unhealthy food being brought into the school. My goal this year is to STOP giving out candy as a prize and to encourage students to bring fruits to class celebrations. Good luck to all of you in the new school year.... I am slowly getting back into school mode. I am about to start on my Master's degree this fall while I am teaching... we'll see how that goes!

I want to join!! I am a 6th grade teacher in central Louisiana. This is my 10th year teaching and my 4th in sixth grade. I have also taught 5th and 2nd grades. I bring my lunch to school. But it seems like there are always snacks that get in my way!

My husband is deploying to Afghanistan for a year in 5 days so I want to shock him when he gets home!

Any tips on filling and satisfying snack would be great!

I guess I should tell about myself too. I am 27, married, with two kids age 6 and 1. I have a degree in Secondary English Education with a minor in Special Ed. Yesterday, was my first day starting my journey to pursue my Masters in Education-Reading and Literacy. I am currently a special ed resource teacher at a career and technical school for grades 11-12. School starts next week and needless to say I am not overly excited. I would really like to be teaching high school English but my summer job hunt was unsuccessful. It is extremely difficult to get teaching job in Illinois. So, if anybody has any tips, suggestions, or is an expert in resumes that would be great! My goal for the year is to bring my lunches to school and not go out and order out. I started MFP this summer so I am also concerned about finding time to exercise. Glad to have such great responses already! I will add you all as soon as I get to my computer.

Hi, I have taught high school math since 1985!!! Currently I teach AP Statistics and Geometry. I just joined MFP yesterday and I love this site.

I go back to work on Thursday. It's 103 degrees here and I just returned from a wonderful Northern California trip where it was 60-70 degrees each day. My motivation for exercising is ZERO!

Let's see.......on Thursday, there will be breakfast tacos and doughnuts and all 'the girls' will want to eat Mexican food for lunch.

I would like to be part of this group, but I don't see how to join. Do i have to be added?

What a great idea! I am teaching ESL at a university. It's pretty exciting to have students from all over the globe who've come to study here. This is my 3rd year teaching ESL. Before that, I taught English to freshman and sophomores at the same university for two years. This fall I'm starting my second masters degree. I already have one in English, and this one will be in TESL. My husband is a fulltime grad student and we have an 11 month old and a 3 year old. Needless to to say, keeping organized and finding time to workout can be a challenge! I've lost 30 lbs since Jan., 21 of them since starting MFP. About 15 lbs was "baby weight," but the rest was all me!

Anyway, I'm glad to see so many teachers here! Feel free to add me and put "teacher" in the message so I know how we know each other!

I think this is a great idea. I have been worried about school starting up. I have been doing really well over the summer. I think keeping up my exercise is really going to be a problem. I teach in a small Catholic school 5th thru 8th grade math and jr high science.
