A question of the day would be a great and fun way to be involved every day (thought I read that above).
As far as goals:
mine are to log in everything and stay in goal
excercise everyday (no time goal, no workout plan, just get moving to start off with)0 -
What about Teachers Aid's? Do we count?
If so, I'm a teachers aid for Special Needs and ESL for high school kids.. and it is a challenging job!
There is also always snacks everyone from someone bringing something in or celebrating something.. and it's really hard to not want to eat everything!0 -

Of course. I was a paraprofessional for two years and it is really a exasperating job. I did not like it at all. Nice to meet you!0 -
Hi!
Just curious as to what everybody exercise schedule will be like when school starts. I am trying to see if it will be better to work out in the morning or night? I see more downfalls of each one than anything else.0 -
Hi! I'm 26, my name's Meg.
I have B.A.s in International Relations and German Literature, but I'm an Engish (as a foreign language) teacher in Germany. I have TESOL, TEFL, and TESL certifications, and am thinking about doing a Masters in pedagogy. I teach all ages, from at a kindergarten once a week to business students at a private school.
We *always* have snacks in the teacher's room, and the hours are never the same so it can be hard to get in 3 healthy meals.
Wow! Germany. What is it like. What is typical schedule like there? Nice to meet you.0 -
Hi!
I'm a teacher too.
I teach cosmetology to 11th & 12th graders. Starting my 3rd year at this school, but was teaching at a community college for almost 8 years before that. I am already back at work, didn't get much of a summer, since my program relies on clock hours and the students have to clock so many hours each year. So much for enjoying the summer with my own kids, ages 11, 8, and 4. Bummer.
I've been trying to lose weight forever but got more serious about it in MArch....I've lost 25 pounds since then and some of my clothes are starting to actually fit or be a little loose, even my bras! I had to cut off part of the cups of one bra so the loose cups wouldn't poke out of the neckline of the fancy dress I bought, that I had to buy 2 sizes smaller than normal!!! YAY!!! I still have lots more to lose though and happy to have motivation!! I'm still not 100% clear on calories eaten vs exercise calories vs net calories, etc. but working on it.
I've tried to eliminate as many bread/rice/pasta things from my diet but do eat some carbs. I also quit drinking my 1-can-coke daily habit, which was hard....every now and then I am craving one!! But I really lack enough fruits and veggies....I'm not a fan of veggies, especially green ones, and the ones I like are the more carby veggies, like corn, potatoes, and sweet potatoes!! So anyone that looks at my food diary will see how poor my eating habits are. And some days, I definately don't drink enough water, but lots of decaf iced tea......
Thanks for reading my rambling.
The cosmetology class at the school where I work is the same way. They need a bunch of hours and even have to go one Saturday a month. Wow you have come a long way! Good luck on the rest of your journey!0 -
What a great idea! I teach 4th grade reading in a very small rural school in Texas. I've survived 7 years of teaching, and this will be my eighth Our school nurse challenged the school in a biggest loser contest. It's been fun seeing all my coworkers lose weight. It's also nice to be in a supportive environment.
Hey Amy! My company did a biggest loser competition last year right after the new year and there was a cash prize for the winner. So I put my 10 bucks in thinking this would help me be more motivated to lose weight since I was starting another grad class and that usually meant gaining more weight. I'm so looking forward to not only losing weight this semester, but also entering and winning the biggest loser competition if they have it at work again this year because MFP has really helped me focus and keep track of what I am doing to better my health and weight loss!
Wow we tried to have the same contest but everybody slowly died off and we just stop talking about it. lol0 -
I want to join! I am a preschool teacher. I have started back to work and I am looking forward to a more structured schedule. It seems I do better with my nutrition and exercise this way. I am getting married in December. Currently, I am 129 and would love to be 120 by the wedding or less!
Sounds like we are in the same struggle. How tall are you. I am 5"1 126 right now. I started at 130. Good luck!0 -
Part of me can't wait for school to start back, part of me worries about all the temptation. Doughnuts, baked godies and the such in the mornings. School lunches usually aren't that bad. On the good side we have a wonderful salad bar everyday at lunch. I am getting ready to start my 14th year in education. This year as principal, so i have to stay away from stress eating and eating just to eat. The biggest problem i will have this year is when the cooks make pepperoni rolls. They are absolutely the most wonderful creation to come out of a school cafeteria.
Hi,
Weird question but what type of fish is that? love fishing but couldn't make it out this summer. It's hard to get a 1 year old to sit still long enough to catch anything.0 -
Media Specialist here!! I've run school libraries and taught computer lab for 5 years now. Up til last school year it was always in elementary buildings, but last year and this year it's middle school (grades 6-8) I'm doing Atkins, have lost 10 pounds and counting and want to get to 140. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my job and am getting REALLY excited for the school year to start.
My goals as the year starts are to continue my focus on eating WHOLE foods: meats, cheeses, veggies, fruits, NOTHING from a box, and to move a little each day.I'm worried about the meal thing when I've got work and my kids football games and band practices to shuttle to and from, but I'm planning ahead now.
There is always TONS of food at my school. Donuts, luncheons, etc. The way I dodge is eat in my office or bring my own food. It's definitely not always easy.0 -
I teach transition skills to students in the 18-22 year age range who have moderate to severe disabilities. I've been teaching special education for 12 years. I love my job!
I have had weight issues all my life, starting with disordered eating before I was out of kindergarten. I currently need to lose 40 pounds and learn how to eat like a normal person.
Looking forward to more of the great support I've found on this site.

What about specialists?! I'm a Speech Pathologist in a high school collaborative setting. I'm 25 and live in Boston. I just finished my masters' in May and started working right away. My goals are to bring my lunch 4 days a week and get to the gym 4 school days and at least one weekend day. Oof, I'm so tired at the end of the day, it's not easy getting myself to the gym. A bunch of my friends make fun of me because I only work 7 hrs a day, but I'm certainly not sitting at a desk at a computer like other people! I literally run away for most of the day, and try to avoid getting punched by my autistic students the rest of the day. Yay education!0

Hi everyone, I think this is a great idea! I am a subsitute teacher, by choice, in Ohio. I sub in mostly primary and intermediate grades. Its interesting to sub in different grade levels and schools. The common thread with the schools I sub in is the teachers love to celebrate any occasion with unhealthy food. So of course I have to pretake not to offend anyone Ha Ha. So my challenge and goal is to refrain from these tempting treats. That's why I am so glad for my MFP family to help me to stay on track. As far as exercise... well this will be a challenge. My goal is to do it in the morning before work. Good luck with everyone!0

Hi!
Just curious as to what everybody exercise schedule will be like when school starts. I am trying to see if it will be better to work out in the morning or night? I see more downfalls of each one than anything else.
I personally workout at night.. Since I sub currently, they never call me until 6 or 7 in the morning anyway.
Plus I look at it as, I can work off the stress of my students... esp. if the kids decide to be absolute terrors that day0 -

I'm not a morning person so I generally work out at night. Since I'm still in school working for my teaching certificate, the days I'm actually teaching is at the zoo which is about two miles from my house. When I'm teaching at the zoo I generally don't go to the gym, but instead ride my bike there. Plus my program is really interactive so it's a pretty good work out in and of itself.0 -
I usually work out right after school. I work in 2 locations, so sometimes I get up and go to the gym at 5:30 on the days I'm at the closer location, but when I go to the further one, those 15 minutes are precious in the morning.0

I am right now working out after school, love the working off stress of the students, and since it's in a pool with the warm weather, I have a chance to play with my own two kids and give them a chance to cool down and destress as well. Not sure what I'll do once it starts to get cold. During lunch last year a coworker and I did a quick 15 minute walk at least a couple of times a week. One of my coworkers is talking about starting a P90X workout every Wednesday after school if we can find a classroom to fit the five of us that are interested. I hope we manage that, it would be great to see what the videos look like. Not to mention I workout better with motivation from others.0 -
Mary,
I am so glad to see your goals set up that way. It is very encouraging to me because I almost match you (I'm about 5 heavier though ). Keep going!0 -
This is a great idea last summer I lost almost 30 pounds only to gain 40 during the school year... We start back with planning days on Monday and the first thing on the agenda is Welcome Back breakfast and then for lunch it's a pot luck which helps since I can bring something healthy. Then we have the bi weekly Friday treat which tends to be cup cakes, ice cream sundays, etc. This is the norm for my school. It's super nice because I've taught at schools where they don't do anything but the calories pile on fast!
Almost forgot, I teacher intensive reading in high school. I am entering into my 10th year teaching and this is the 6 different subject/ program I have taught. Let me know what we are going to do!0 -
HI! My name's Cristy and I'm a middle school teacher. This year I'll be teaching Social Studies and Reading (my two favorite subjects, so I'm exited!)...until Monday, though, I was a Language Arts teacher. I found out Monday that I'd be changing grades, subjects and rooms... and we get kids this coming Monday! After two days of moving and setting up a new classroom (again!!) I'm exhausted -- my room is close enough to ready to have students show up -- now it's time to figure out what I'm going to do with them!! I finally was given a curriculum guide this morning....... okay, venting over, but I know as teachers you'll understand better than anybody what the last two days have been like!!!
This is my seventh year (5 in 5th grade, last year in 6th). I teach in a Title 1/Low Economic school where I'm Dept Chair, Core Mentor and Co-sponsor of Student Council. I'm also a wife and mom, with four kids in grades 7, 9, 12 and a college freshman. My stepsons are in college and grad school.
Like most, I've been having a great weight-loss and exercise summer, but I"m nervous about the new school year. If the last two days are any indication I'm gonna have a tough time getting my exercise in... I've been too tired to do much when I get home! Food won't be a big problem, as I usually bring my lunch and snacks (I'm scared of the cafeteria food!! LOL) I've worked this summer on making healthy choices that I can pack along. My goal this month -- EXERCISE!!!
Good luck to everyone on the start of a new school year!!!!0 -
Hi Is it too late to join this group of teachers?0
-
Hi! I think this is a great idea. My name is Laura and I teach Math Models and Algebra 2. I joined MFP in June and have been "really good". I was telling my husband the other day I wasn't sure about how I would do when school begins. We report back on Monday and the district is providing breakfast (donuts, kolaches, etc) and a district wide lunch (barbecue, beans, potato salad). See where I am headed? Each day this week of inservice they provide donuts in the morning and candy all day (to keep our energy up). Every faculty meeting there is a basket full of candy and chips on each table.
My goal is to get up early enough to be able to exercise before school because I am too tired in the evening and usually have stacks of papers to grade. I also plan to pack a healthy lunch to take.
Glad to see so many other teachers on this site.0 -

So glad to have found this thread. I'm wiped right now, but will check back soon.0

oooh, I need more teacher friends, so please add me. I teach in a very low socio-economic neighborhood. I've taught grades 6-8 for the past 11 years, but will be teaching grade 3 for the first time this year.
Climbingpanda, I've noticed I'm not hungry after workouts. Since we don't workout during school hours, it makes sense that you would be hungry then.0 -
Hi!
Just curious as to what everybody exercise schedule will be like when school starts. I am trying to see if it will be better to work out in the morning or night? I see more downfalls of each one than anything else.
My plan at this point is to exercise at night after my daughter is asleep. I think my goal is going to be a minimum of 4 nights a week including weekends. I've devoted two nights a week where I do absolutely NO school work and NO exercising and just be with my husband after the little one is down. Last year, I started setting an alarm on my phone and leaving work at that time and not doing school work until our daughter was in bed. While my husband was much happier with that arrangement (despite the small amount of sleep I tended to get), I could tell I was neglecting him. So now he has 2 nights all to himself. Right now my room is basically set up and we start inservice on Monday. I hope to stay on top of things and not be overly stressed this year. I'm pushing the exercise to help with that too. Main objective this year- maintain what I've lost over the summer and keep stress level's as down as possible.0 -
LOVE this topic!!! I will begin my 21st year as a teacher in 3 days!!! I've taught Kindergarten for all except 4 yrs when I taught 1st grade. Love my job, but dread getting back to bad habits and snacking. Hoping this year will be different though, thanks to MFP and a better lifestyle! I started this journey 7 weeks ago and have lost 14 lbs, but have gained a new attitude and friends to support me on the journey! My goal is to lose a total of around 60 lbs... wow, sounds like such a daunting task---but I'm in it for the long haul!!! I got this!!! Feel free to friend me for some extra support! ;-)0

I hope to go to the gym from school at least 3 days a week for an hour or so and then hit the gym at the weekend both days if I'm up to it.
I find having the gym as a goal for the day sometimes gets me through the day!!
I treat myself to a nice sweet sachet of coffee and a snack about half an hour before I finish partly to get me ready for the workout but also to make sure I stick to it - otherwise I don't have many calories left to eat in the evening.
Usually works :O)

Hi everyone, I am a Library/Media Clerk at an elementary school. I just started back to work, and really want to keep up the workouts and healthier eating that I have been doing all summer. I plan to pack my lunch instead of grabbing fast food, and to get up a bit earlier to exercise. This is a great topic!0

I was doing 30 DS at around midnight, but as I'm part time and my son will start full-time education this year, I hope to fit in C25K, along with running the 0.8 miles to school when necessary.0
