please do not call me SKINNY...

when I hear that word, I think of a waif. I am not currently a walking stick. No offense to anyone who is, but I am not. I have curves and have worked really hard to get these curves. See, I USED to be skinny - all of my life. I've had issues trying to gain weight, therefore I never had a real shape, except straight down and even times when my ribs and hip bones poked out. (Not a pretty sight to see).

Then, I put on weight (purposely) to shape, then tone my body. Now, I am working to define muscles. Since I came from that background, I do find it offensive when I am referred to as "skinny." It also offends me when people tell me I am too small and need to put on some weight.

I am 5'5" and 130 pounds with curves and abs. I could never say that before, but now I can, proudly.

So, before you go lightly throwing that word around, please think how it might make others feel. That is all.

I'm Bry and I approve this message.

    You look awesome!

I come from the other side of the track, and LOVE hearing how skinny I am! (which I know I'm not, but some family members think that I am!)

I try to never comment on another's weight unless asked to. You never know what is the wrong thing to say, you know?

I'm just not gonna go into my history with the word "skinny."

Suffice to say, the overweight don't own the rights to be sensitive about weight and size. That's all I'll say.

Just like anorexic have a distorted vision of themselves so do some big people. They really do not see how big they really are and when they look at a normal sized person they think the fit person is to small because in their mind they are a healthy weight. Next time that happens grab their roll (or at least point it out) and then walk away.

I think you look amazing!! My grandmother who was always a naturally small person hated the work skinny. She thought "slender" was a bit better. However, I think in your case we can go with "fit". Congrats on all that muscle tone!

thanks. I've been told I should be force-fed sandwiches before. Uh, that's nice, thanks. Its not like I wasn't trying... Oh, and I wasn't fishing for compliments, just saying words can hurt us all.

    I completely understand.

It really bothers me when people call me skinny. It makes me feel like all the work I have put into my MUSCLES has no value. I may be smaller than I used to be, but I am not skinny.
  • You look fantastic! Great post by the way!

I am working very hard to think about what I actually say about ANYONE'S body. I recently realized that I used to say some pretty fu@ked up things about people (both overweight and thin), and I'm trying to make amends.

sorry, but I agree to disagree. In my eyes, that would be like me calling someone a cow. That's not nice or appreciated and I would never do that.

No, it isn't always. And you know it isn't when you hear it in a certain context. When someone is being told she should be force fed a sandwich it CERTAINLY isn't.

    Does Devilishly Curvy count?
  • Skinny sounds so negative :( I think thin is a more appropriate term, because you can still be THIN and have curves :)

She shouldn't have to try to take it as such. Especially if she doesn't find it to be a compliment.

Thin, slender, slim, fit.... I also like fierce and vicious.

I am 5'6" and about 136#. Wear a size 6. I work for this, I work really hard for this. My defenses go up, too, when I get called "skinny". I really want to tell them this,

"Look, I am pretty solid I'm not skinny. I'd like to punch you in the throat. But I won't, because you're not worth the effort."

Hi I've been at both ends of the weight spectrum (but mostly on the fat side!) - interestingly people only ever told me when they thought I was getting 'too thin' not ever when they thought I was getting 'too fat' but anyway what I really wanted to say is that a lot of people lack the correct vocabulary. When I was slim and younger, I used to get so upset because everyone would describe me as 'big' instead of tall - I'm 5 ft 9" and at the time was only 142 lbs and the use of that word was what hurled me into a life of yo-yo dieting. Enjoy your curves :D

Coming from a cow, I'd LOVE to be skinny again. And if I say it to someone else, it's both a compliment and a decent measure of jealousy.
