Hey! I wanted to know as hunting season is here....if there are any other hunters on MFP that would like to start a group....share stories....recipes....ideas....tips...etc..

But I'm hoping we could keep this forum fun and clean as I know hunting is a touchy subject for some.....I prefer to respect others as we hunters should be respected as well!

Soooo anyone?????

    Question,

Are you a real hunter? Or are you someone who baits deer (or w/e animal) year round and then shoots them at the corn pile/salt block on the first day of season?

I hunt deer. Deer camp is horrible for watching what you eat. Everyone brings a dish to share plus other snacks and goodies. The worst is the special K bars :grumble: With all the walking that we do, I need to be prepared with healthy snacks I can carry along. Any ideas welcome.

We hunt whitetail and hogs. Hubby just saw some AWESOME bucks on his trail camera. They were bedded down right in front of it. Sweet!!!!!!! We process our deer into steaks, hamburger meat, sausage and jerky mainly. I'd love to share recipes, info!!

I don't have any really amazing recipes as i prefer wild game to store bought meat anytime. I like rabbit or even squirrel cooked in fresh homemade spaghetti sauce! Venison roasts tend to dry out, so I will cook 1 pork roast, 1 beef roast and 1 venison roast all in the same pan and we can eat for quite some time. This summer, I've been doing a lot of smoking the fish that i've caught...mmm. Getting hungry!

I haven't hunted in ages...I used to go with my dad and uncles.

But now I don't eat meat, so I have no reason to. :D

We use food plots, corn, ect to attract the deer. It's still not as easy as your saying though. Hunters even those of years ago have always used food plots and any means necessary to hunt. The only form of hunting I don't agree with is hunting with dogs. Running the poor animal until they are so tired they literally fall at your feet is wrong, IMO.

My hubby can sit for days at the food plot he's planted or even a whole season and only see a few dear and most of which are not shootable. Yes, he goes for the big buck if possible, but the also goes for food!! Even with a food plot he doesn't just sit at the plot. He hunts all over the 100 acres he hunts. He spends days tracking the deer and finding the best spot. And just because you see a food plot it doesn't mean somone is "baitiing" the deer. Deer on our land (according to our pics from the trail cams) are eating/bedding at night, which is when you CAN'T hunt!!! It's work to get those deer to move into the line of fire during the day.

Do you hunt or are you just trying to start touble?!?!?!

I don't hunt, mainly b/c I find it boring. I have nothing against hunters though, except people like my father who do it illegally. I was just curious. A lot of people around where I live bait the hell out of deer year in/year out and year round.

I personally think it's tacky and lazy. But, I'm not a hunter, so you'll prolly disagree with me. I do however, get highly pissed at people who simply hunt for the rack, cut the head off and leave the body laying in the woods.

    I fish whenever I can.

I also take my camera with me and end up shooting lots of deer, well , if I am in the right spot, otherwise I just sit and curse squirrels...

Never thought about mixing the different types of roast. My mother in law can cook the most tender deer roast, but me..no luck!! I usually mix the sausage, especially when I make sausage balls, but I'll have to try mixing the roast now too!! Thanks for that tip!

The one doe I have under my belt wasn't baited.....I haven't sat at a bait pile for deer or moose....but have sat at a bait pile for bear.....and nothing came in.....

Whether baited or not....it is HARD to get them in....you make one little mistake with noise or smell or movement.,....they know you are there and won't come near you!! Doesn't matter if you have food or not!!

I don't trophy hunt just to get a trophy either.....If I get a trophy....I will mount it....but would NEVER shoot something unless I plan on eating it!!

I'm with you....I'm not for hunting illegally......as much as I wish I could hunt whenever I want....it is regulated for a reason....population control.....if we all hunted when we felt like it...there would be nothing to hunt!!

    I LOVE fishing too!!!!

My 8 year old just got his first compound bow last month for his birthday. He's sooo happy to be able to start practicing with it. Of course it's not a high enough poundage for him to hunt with, but he's a darn good shot so in a few years he'll be AWESOME!!! I just normally tag along and don't actually hunt, but the hubby has convinced me to try and start bow hunting. I do enjoy shooting his dad's bow!!

That's awesome....I'm dying to get a bow...my hubby has one...but I can't pull the draw weight he has it set to...I need a lighter one.

I agree. Wasting an animal's life is seriously immoral. I do spend much of the spring and summer planting food plots for the deer and turkey on my property. I do not bait deer, and I hunt for food. Because I hunt for food, I prefer a bigger animal (more food), but I am not in any way a trophy hunter, and I do hunt only in season.

I'm glad you clarified your stance, I largely agree with you.

I know plenty about it, I just have no desire to do it.

I believe we should be allowed to hunt humans, stupid people & murderers. Why can't we thin out that herd? lol (I'm sure someone will surely miss the sarcastic natures of this comment, so here is your disclaimer: I was kidding. Sorta).
