Venison roast is better if you cook it in the crockpot with spices, onions and carrots and a box of beef stock. It keeps it from getting too dry. I do the same with Moose.

Not a hunter myself, but I can definitely appreciate those that do. They're helping with population control, and basically eating off the land. There are sooo many things you can do with deer meat, make it into sausage, steak, jerky, etc. I think it's quite respectable. I am so against hunting PURELY for sport though, like when you shoot something you don't plan on eating just to have a trophy. It gets me so unbelievably angry!!! There is a really nice gun shop not too far from here, and I love the guns there but I HATE going there because they have so many animal heads mounted that they've shot themselves, and did NOT eat, just left. It's unnecessary.

There really is no such thing as "sport" hunting anymore. When people go over to africa and other places, they may not take the meat to eat themselves, but every bit of that animal is used to feed the local villagers. (in many places it's the law that you can't bring the meat back into the country) Here in the states, it is illegal to just shoot things and leave them lay. If something is shot and left, it's poached and should in NO WAY ever be confused with legitimate hunting.

I would like to get back into hunting but I don't really know how to get started. There is lots of public land around here near Huntsville, Alabama, but I don't really know where to go.

Also I don't want to pay for processing so I'd have to learn how to butcher a deer.

I don't mind baiting or otherwise "canned" hunts. I've been on them with my Dad when I was younger - we got invited to this "managed game preserve" where they had cut crossroads through their land and stationed guntowers at each intersection. I shot 2 dear that trip.

It definitely is not "hunting", it is more like "waiting for your food to show up". But it is still far more humane than any slaughterhouse/meat processing commercial facility.

I do believe you should eat what you kill. Killing for the pleasure of killing is wrong.

Check with your local Game and Fish Dept to get ideas of where to go, and what the newest laws are. Here in AZ, the game officers know where all the good spots are.

My husband and 15 year old are in the Alaska bush right now, hunting moose. They will be gone for five days, and while I'm looking forward to eating some moose (here's hoping), I am NOT looking forward to butchering.

I was nosey one time and watched "tried" to stay around the hubby while he and his bros cleaned a deer....OMG I almost become a vegetarian!! never again!!! We were at the processer once and I kept my eyes covered while waiting in the car, but heard a huge boom sound and looked up. It was the hubby knocking over a barrel to get my attention just as the guy beside him gutted a deer. Rreally it wouldn't take much at all to make me never eat meat again...LOL!!!!

LOL. Even at home I have to do all the meat portion diviying up. My wife hates it.

I think people ought to be more intimate with their food to have a better appreciation of where it comes from and what it costs.

My husband and i hunt deer, hog, squirrel and coon and Fish all year round. We will not buy meat from the store unless were all out of wild meat. I dont like meat from the store. I agree with someone earlier, it makes me very angry to see someone hunt for the trophy. Its pathetic!! My favorite food is the chicken fried backstrap! mm mm good!!

Down here in texas they dont care what you do shoot and lay or shoot and eat as long as you getting rid of the hogs that are running rampant around here. I dont personally agree with shoot and lay. IF YOUR GONNA SHOOT IT YOU BEST BE EATING IT!!

Early doe on private land opened today in Michigan today! I'm so excited - going out this weekend to tackle some squirrel population issues in one area and hopefully put some venison in the freezer from another! And then bow opens Oct 1st! Can't wait for it this year.

Hey! I wanted to know as hunting season is here....if there are any other hunters on MFP that would like to start a group....share stories....recipes....ideas....tips...etc..

But I'm hoping we could keep this forum fun and clean as I know hunting is a touchy subject for some.....I prefer to respect others as we hunters should be respected as well!

For the most part I think we kept to what the OP wanted except for the tangents about what is and isn't correct as far as baiting, etc. Think we could drop the "My opinion is right and yours is wrong" and get back to what the OP was looking for?

    It's tourist season, already?

I'm envious of you hog-hunters. Thankfully, we have almost none up here in the northwest. I would love to do my fair share of ridding the continent of that pestilence.

Hey all......just wanted to make a note......if you live in the city....please do not try and hand feed squirrels....because others will not know if they are sick or just being friendly....I am currently going through this with a squirrel infront of my house and don't know what to do about it.....It has jumped on my neighbour more than once.....and has tried to get to me and others....so what to do...in the country you would get rid of it...but in the city you get charged criminally for killing it.....sooooooo

Please do not try and domesticate wild animals.........It sucks because I have young children that play in front of my my house.....so what to do.....

It is a discussion forum. Seems like as long as it is kept respectful, differing opinions make good discussion. As for baiting and trophy only hunting, it's my understanding that none of that is legal in Colorado yet. We have a pretty purist approach to hunting here, and I have experienced ample effort by the authorities to monitor and enforce this over the years. Even the use of radios for aiding someone in locating game is illegal.

We allowed to bait here.....and I have sat on a bait pile before..I don't always bait....but I don't find anything wrong with it is still hard to get an animal out where I am. However I don't trophy hunt....I hunt what I will eat....however if what I hunt is worth mounting then I will......however.....I will don't hunt based on trophy....I also don't hunt based on quantity....I won't hunt more than what my family and I can consume.....as I don't believe in putting meat in the freezer and letting it go to waste. We actually have to buy tags for hunting here in Canada....and I abide by the strict rules the Canadian laws have....I don't believe in poaching.

I meant more trophy hunting, and just because it's illegal doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

You need a trap- the kind that is used for racoons, possums, feral cats, etc. You can find them at feed stores (if you have one near you) or order online. After you trap it, release it far, far away from your house :)

I have a trap...LOL however it is illegal here...you have to have a trappers license and have to have rights to the trap line....Its soooo stupid.....And the last thing I need it to get reported by a neighbor...and get charged. Some guy this summer got charged for taking care of racoons .

I think the kids are in the clear..I haven't seen the squirrel in a day ...I think its gone......I'm pretty sure someone else is going to kill it!

Guess you guys don't have supermarkets and shops...why else would you need to go out and kill things in the wild? It's not like you NEED to.

No of course we don't NEED to kill things out in the wild.....we just prefer to. Natural meat with no preservatives and steroids and whatever else they put in the meat these days.

Don't get me wrong....I still get my chicken, beef and pork from the grocery store....but I like having variety...and enjoy the taste of game meat....I also like to eat the fish I catch!! Just personal preference I guess!

You could always call your local animal control and explain the issue with the squirrel coming after people. They usually can come out and trap the animal for relocation for you. My mom has had to do this before in the past.

I realize that you're trying to start a fight here, but you should be educated. Hunting is actually essential in areas where the wildlife population has grown to the rate that the animals cannot thrive because there are too many of them and not enough food. Yes, we could let them starve to death, but the government agrees that hunting them to thin out the population is a better way of handling it. If you read some of the earlier pages this was already discussed. So, in some cases, we do NEED to hunt certain animals. Using them for food is the only responsible thing to do if you are going to participate in hunting them.

This argument has never held much water for me. If you aren't eating what you kill yourself, then you're just killing for the pleasure of killing, and to me, that's wrong. To say that you gave the meat away to some African village sounds noble and all, but if you really wanted to feed the villagers you would have done far better to just mail them the cost of your safari trip and would likely have fed them for a year or even built a school.
Guess you guys don't have supermarkets and shops...why else would you need to go out and kill things in the wild? It's not like you NEED to.

I can tell you for a fact that the animals I killed were far, far, far more humanely killed by me than any animal slaughtered in a slaughterhouse and sold in a supermarket.

The deer I shot were enjoying their natural habitat right up until the last second when they went, "Huh? BANG!" and it was over.

Animals slaughtered for supermarkets are transported in tractor trailers, unloaded into corrals, forced down the loading ramps amid the smells and sounds of death to their slaughter. I don't have a problem with that, either, but let's not hate on hunting because the truth is it is far more humane than just about any meat you buy at the grocery store.

    Steve
