No because 5 yr olds don't have the behavioral or cognitive ability to "deal with it". You might as well ask her to solve calculus equations. Here's another plan: How about asking the 5 yr old bullies and their parents to "deal with it"? Why do they get a pass?

    :flowerforyou:

I think one of the things people don't understand about bullying is that it doesn't actually "toughen up" the kid being bullied. It just affects their self-esteem negatively. Even if they do stand up for themselves, that causes a new set of problems. It's exacerbated when it starts at such a young age, before a child has had a chance to develop his/her self-image. A 15-year-old who has never had self-esteem problems can learn to stand up for himself, no problem -- but he's probably not getting picked on in the first place because he's not an easy target. A 5-year-old doesn't have the same emotional skills, and isn't developmentally capable of learning them yet. I'd love for my daughter to stand up for herself, but it's not part of her skill set right now. So we have to approach the problem in other ways rather than asking a child to just suck it up and deal.
This is good stuff. The problem is that even though your point is excellent, we rarely spend the time or effort to address the real problems. As others have pointed out, we want to slap band-aids on symptoms, quick and fast. Addressing real underlying issues takes time, energy, patience and some skill. We'd rather ban movies.

I totally agree. Parenting takes too much work for most people. "Oh, look at Johnny beating up on that little kid. Boys will be boys! Tee hee!" But then they get all mad over the Hot Coffee mode in GTA or movies like Rudolph that aren't actually causing the problem. If people would be real parents, we'd have a lot fewer problems.

My mom is a elementary school teacher and there are schoold in her district where kids can't RUN on the playground!!! Seriously? NO RUNNING?!?!?

Yes and they wonder why kids are getting so fat.

And the school where my sister sends my nephew has a no touching policy. Kids are not allowed to touch one another for any reason.

No HUGS?? sick! Looks like we're raising kids to be a bunch of emotionally dysfunctional douches.

Hearing these stories makes me so glad I live where I live. Kids can play with balls and run on the playground. They can touch each other. The whole school system is very active in dealing with bullying. Plus, they play the PC game much less than others. Teachers can tell their students Merry Christmas. My daughter's class has a nativity scene in it. Yes, I'm sure if someone complained, they'd have it removed, but no one around here complains about that kind of stuff. Feeling blessed right now!

At the rate that things are going (politically correct) pretty soon we are going to have to own the following:

pacifier ( prevents us from speaking)
sleep mask (prevent us from seeing anything)
ear plugs (to prevent us from speaking)

Then maybe the world will be a happier place when we are all blind, deaf, and mute outside of our own homes!!!!!!!!

Or people could just be polite and respectful--you know, Golden Rule and all that. Not too hard, really.
