I stand corrected. But my argument still stands. Why do I "have" to eat if I'm not hungry?

    Put simply....you don't.

How do you define "being hungry"? A lot of us are disconnected from our physical hunger signals. We eat by the clock, by the mere sight of food, because of people eating around us, and for emotional reasons. In other words, we don’t always eat just because we are hungry. Hunger is one of the primal forces of life. Babies cry when they’re hungry, and caretakers respond with food. This is the beginning of our personal relationship with hunger and satiety. Eating to satisfy hunger is a learned behavior. But, what if something interferes with this learning? A parent can misread signals. A baby may be fed when not hungry, but fussy or crying for other reasons. Food may be offered to a child to relieve him when he’s hurt or upset. When food is used as a distraction or reward, the child becomes confused about why we feed him. The process of learning to eat in response to physical hunger becomes interrupted. Research shows you’re actually trained how to eat by your family. Taste, smell and texture preferences are culturally learned. Being taught to use food for reward or comfort in childhood is one of the strongest shapers of adult eating behavior. While there is a genetic component to chronic dieting and overeating, it has a smaller effect than the food environment in which you grew up.

Eating behavior specialists refer to three types of hunger:

1.Physiological is triggered by signs, like stomach growling and headache
2.Mouth is triggered by the sight, smell, taste, and memory of food
3.Psychological is triggered by emotions, like anxiety, anger and sadness

Not trying to be rude..but if you don't think it's harmful, then try it. What's the point in asking people about it. the way you presented it sounds like you have your mind made up. How is anybody going to change your mind about it?
    I agree!

I don't listen to my body, it listens to me. If it knew what was best I would never gained 40 pounds. I eat my calories properly and feel great, if I am under I eat a snack.

My body doesn't like running or exercise, not listening to that either.

Your body will follow your mind.

I watched my mom lose her hair going under, I like my hair.

I checked my bmr on this site and it was under 1200. I don't think there is anything wrong with consuming only 1000 cals a day I do it often but thats because I am not hungry and I am not going to force feed myself to meet a standard created in a country full of fat people. No offense to anyone but I would have to be stupid to take diet and fitness advice from a sea of people who can't get their own weight under control. I wonder if the calorie minimum is different in other countries where obesity isn't such a problem. Does anyone know?

I guess my question is... for those on here looking to lose weight saying that they can't possibly eat more than 1200 calories a day, how did you end up with extra weight to lose in the first place?

Maybe i'm the only one... but I certainly didn't gain this extra 20 lbs by "eating only when I'm hungry"
Ok I am bored and I lied. That wasn't the end. This is a good question. Maybe I should stop playing both sides of the fence.

Ok in simple terms... your body needs at least 1200 calories to keep your organs working properly. When you are not giving your body enough calories or a huge caloric deficit, your body is going to "think" it's starving and start retaining everything you eat in order to protect you from starvation.

The HCG is ONLY approved as a fertility drug NOT as a weight loss supplement. There is no magic trick to weight loss, so just stick to creating a proper deficit.

If you are not feeling hungry try to exercise more so your metabolism runs faster.

This ^^^^ hits the nail on the head!

You are programmed as an being to respond to your environment and behaviour... this programming is done in a variety of ways but a large factor is your endocrine system (hormones). If you do little exercise and eat little energy rich food (calories), your endocrine system will respond by storing energy as fat and slowing your metabolism right down so you need less energy (calories) to survive. Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) will be low and you will gain fat (weight) quickly.

The opposite will be true if you eat a lot of energy rich foods and do plenty of cardio exercise (not strength exercise). Your endocrine system will respond by burning fat stores and turning energy foods you eat (calories) into glycogen and glucose. Hence you will tend to lose fat stores, feel more energized and have a high BMR... and gain weight slowly.

    *simples*

Do you suspect that scientists would recommend a minimum calorie intake that would make people overweight? :noway:

I'm just jealous I eat 1500 calories a day and I get hungry I wish I had to force myself to eat lol, maybe you should consult your doctor or a nutritionist, check with a real expert on this.

I'm no expert on this, but I think getting at least 1,200 calories in daily is ensuring that your body receives the proper nutrition it needs. I'm not sure you'd be able to meet the daily requirements needed to fuel your body if your eating less than this. Especially if you're keeping up with a proper exercise regime.

If you're having trouble meeting your 1200 cals/day, I would suggest using different types of healthy items to get you to that mark. Peanut butter is a great way to up your cals for the day, as well as healthy oils/fats like olive oil, almonds, avocados, etc.

If you just don't want to eat 1,200 cals, then thats your call to make- no one else's. BUT, I can't help but say that you would just be mistreating your body in the long-run?

If u have your mind made up we can'rt change. That's all I am saying.

This is true. But, since she's asking advice, her mind probably isn't made up.

^^Exactly what I was going to post after I finished reading comments. Clearly if my mind was made up, I wouldnt care what others thought about it.

Totally, I am only allowed 1200 calories and I am always starving, always. I always want more calories then that...which is why I have extra weight on me I guess. Those who struggle to eat that much??? How were you eating before joining??

I guess it depends on your goals.

Generally speaking, on average the body burns about 50 calories an hour just to function on the regular course of a day. That is where the 1200 cals minimum comes from (24*50-1,200). Now add to that various factors like body compositiion, activity level, health/medical conditions, age, pregnancy, breast feeding, etc and that number changes. If you are not hungry then as a general rule don't eat. But if you have certain goals like losing a certain amount of weight or gaining a certain amount of weight or building muscle mass, then you do need to feed your body accordingly-sometimes even if you aren't hungry- like some athletes or bodybuilders, etc. (and those should be quality calories derived from healthy sources as so many others have stated- lean protein, fruits, veggies, complex carbs, etc.).

I think bogging down into the details of the numbers can become frustrating. Wild animals aren't counting calories!!! Lions know when it's time to eat, fish know when it's time to eat, birds know when it's time to eat. Once people learn their bodies and the signals I think they should follow them as it WORKS BEST FOR THEM. Somedays you may only eat 800 cals and some 1500. As long as your approach to food is a healthy one and you are not ignoring those cues/signals, you should be good.

This is an international site, the goals do not change based on your locale. If you consider this to be a sea of people who can't get their own weight under control, you are seriously ignorant.

You are assuming that every person on this site is overweight and is having no success at changing that?
